Good morning, all. A beautiful day here. Husband will be taking the children to help the elderly couple again, finishing the job for now. Then it is the Labor Day barbecue down in Kamiah. Free meal for all. They enjoy that, and the parade which the VFW is involved in so they attend. They did Saturday morning clean up last night to free up today.
The auto repair shop found nothing wrong with my car. As I drove it home, the tire indicator light was on. I had been unable to get the car during store hours so now I will take it back after the holiday. I missed PT because my car was in the shop. I knew they were swamped when I left it. They could not even find my car in their system. I have been going there for years, since Wes was in Scouts. Mysteries abound in ife these days!
For our efforts, we did get a very nice takeout meal from Mathews. I had catfish, mac and cheese, and fried okra. That took my mind off the car issues.😀
Morning! Another warm one around here.
The area is buzzing with activity from parents weekend at the Academy, the Balloon fest in the Springs and the Art fest in Manitou…we’re staying home!
Janice I had to chuckle at what you had for take out….we don’t have that around here!! And I don’t believe I have ever had catfish but my nephew certainly enjoys fishing for it!
I’m battling a (2nd) jury summons that now has me scheduled 6 days after my first cataract surgery which I think will be a little too close. This is the most cumbersome system to use when requesting/filing for delays and I will probably just have to take more time off to physically go to the courthouse on Tuesday (following the pre-op visit to my GP) and talk to someone in person.
From Alistair Begg in an email that went out today regarding his new book, “The Christian Manifesto”:
~ I found myself facing a real challenge being searched by the Sermon on the Plain. I likened the experience to standing on a rake and being hit on the nose by the handle. There is a particular timeliness to the content.
I have in mind the presidential election, which, although it is more than a year away, calls for our attention. As Christians, we take seriously the privileges of our democracy and seek to be wise and judicious in our judgments. I find it helpful and very important to remind myself that I am a citizen first of heaven and then of the USA. I am living for another world while living in this one. My political inclinations and associations are secondary to my allegiance to Jesus, our King.
It is when the Church is different from the world that it makes an impact. Please think and pray with me about how we can manifest the principles and patterns laid down by Jesus for His followers. No doubt there will be more to say as autumn yields its leaves to winter and we huddle up to stay warm. (Remember, I am writing from Cleveland!) “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience …. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Col. 3:12, 14). ~
I got warmed up from eating a bowl full ofbeef and mushroom noodle soup. And I had a cat in my lap. The combo made me feel a bit too toasty.
I went outside to get the mail. The cool breeze almost gave me a chill! Fall is in the air. Miss Bosley even got in her kitchen box while I cooked. It’s been vacant for a few months.
Dj 2:31….thanks for sharing and amen… I appreciate Alistair so much…and his wisdom and sensitivity regarding scripture
We cannot say squirrel in this house.. the two resident canines know what it means. We now refer to those bushy tailed critters as “vermin”!!! 🐿️ …I have no doubt they will soon catch on though!
Looking down on the front side of my house today I saw a squirrel. Watching it, I rather think that it was a ground squirrel, which I have recently heard bad things about. But I can’t remember what was said
Our neighbor is having a party. The weather is great for people to be out on the deck. I just walked outside and enjoyed getting after sunset photos of the beauriful sky. Again I listened to Amazing Grace and heard how much Wilberforce loved God’s creation and walking in nature while reciting Psalms. He even knew all of Psalm 119!
Dj, I have thought occasionally about how easy it would be for something to jam up a washing machine like that. I have marveled at it not happening more often. I have been conditioned to think of such things by the many years of office work and paper jams in copiers and scanners. I hope it is easily fixed.
I am having mixed feelings about the Braves and Dodgers. I fell asleep on the couch, again, while Art watched all ten innings. I did not envision what is happening there and I feel as sad as happy. I think of all the fans in the stadium and their disappointments. I have too much empathy to be a devoted fan!
I haven’t watched the games so have been a bit more emotionally detached, but they’re both good teams.
And I also feel empathy for the fans (and the players) whenever a team loses (even when mine is the winner). I think that’s a sign of spiritual health. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep for those who weep — even when it’s “just” sports. Good training for us.
God has his lessons for us in all spheres.
As for the washing machine … I will have to call in a repair person. Sigh.
Interesting Facebook post from my cousin in FL:
“Few peoples lives impact our lives in such a way that it seems to last forever. Much less do we ever get to meet them. I met Jimmy Buffett in the Turks and Caicos Islands in April of 1977. Jimmy had just finished a tour where he opened for the Eagles. He had invited Glen Frey of the Eagles to come sailing with him. We sat and had drinks in the Kittina Hotel. I gave him a cooler of ice the next day to get them to HaIti.
Twenty-one years later I met him again at Cape Canaveral. He had come to wright an article for Rolling Stone Magazine on John Glenn’s return to Space.
Those of us who lived in the islands listen to his music like an addiction. If I’m near the ocean I draw on his memory. “Mother Mother Ocean, I have heard you call”.
RIP Jimmy Buffett”
Coincidental to read that the day after my dog-walking friend had asked me what I thought about Jimmy Buffet’s death considering he was all happy go lucky, good times, and partying. She was pondering his soul situation and if he had become a Christian. I had no answer.
I was sorry to hear about Jimmy Buffet. Never saw him perform and didn’t follow him much, but his songs were ones we all knew and liked.
I also have no idea of his spiritual state but he seemed to have a good head on his shoulders, generally, from what I’ve read. He had a guest spot last year on “Blue Bloods.”
_________
Looking at Charlie Brown (the original, #1) today in front, I found myself tipping my head in the same slight direction in which he leans … But he’s very tall and full, is doing well.
___________
Good day at church and I was thrilled to hear one of our original couples — who left for Texas 6 years ago — are coming back. Loved those two, they’re my age, no kids, and they were with this church since before it was Presbyterian, mainstays, he was an elder. I was in their home group for a while back in the day. The wife is gregarious, hilarious, and a fellow redhead; he’s a successful (retired) insurance agent, they have done financial quite well and have several houses and time-shares in Maui (where they rode out the Covid pandemic). Wisely, they also kept their townhome in Seal Beach, 2 beaches over from where they lived near me. They had a grand house here, sold it, and I remember I’d dubbed it “Downton Abby.” But they’re glad they kept the townhouse so they could “go home again.”
They couldn’t tolerate the humidity, heat in Texas, realized they missed everyone they knew for so long, although they found a good ‘Presby’ church there were our pastor visits occasionally (one of his daughters is in the area, I believe). Nice, also, to hear her calling out a strong ‘AMEN’ during the sermons again. 🙂
Anyway, really lifted my mood when they told me after church they were returning for good. (They visit still occasionally.) Yay. So good to have them back.
On the question of Buffet’s faith, found this, for what it’s worth:
____________
~ Was Jimmy Buffett Christian or Jewish? Jimmy Buffett had a strong religious foundation in his life, and his Catholicism served as a source of inspiration and fortitude.
Despite his easygoing demeanor and carefree lifestyle, Buffett frequently spoke about the significance of his Catholic faith in grounding him and giving him a sense of purpose.
He attributed the ideals instilled in him by his family, the church, and his upbringing to molding his character and impacting his music.
Buffett’s faith can be heard in his songs as he frequently explored themes of thankfulness, atonement, and finding peace despite the chaos of life. … ~
__________
DJ – Thanks for that excerpt about Jimmy Buffett’s faith. I had a feeling that he may have been a Christian, but I did not remember where I got that impression. Of course, he may or may not have had true, saving faith, but that seems to indicate that perhaps he did. We can hope so.
From what I have read about him, he was a down-to-earth guy. He and his wife had been married for 46 years.
Kizzie, interesting about the 46-year-long marriage, good for him.
And while it sounded like he enjoyed life, had a whole-lot-of fun with the “beach bum” life that brought us all smiles, made happy music centered on it (that we also all loved and enjoyed) — but that he wasn’t himself caught up in the lifestyle in a harmful way (sounds like he had a pretty disciplined life with his career and businesses and marriage)?
And if he did have a prodigal younger life, he didn’t stay in that. But he did manage to still keep his happy-go-lucky attitude, it seemed?
I heard a story on the news from a friend of his who recalled how Buffett spotted a rather drunk & confused person on a street corner on Key West early one morning after “closing time,” stopped, gave him a ride and made sure he got home safely; guy later realized who had picked him up.
And he apparently was a wise businessman, was worth something like $1 billion at his death.
As to the state of his soul, God only knows — but I was glad to read he had an upbringing that included those teachings. It would be nice to have him as one of God’s many “surprises” in heaven, wouldn’t it?

I put this on the news thread but thought it deserved mention here too.
You will probably remember the shocking story, yet the new details may be even more shocking.
Read the whole thing.

Aw, cats do love boxes. Annie would always crawl into an empty one around here.
Abby chased another squirrel through the backyard this morning, squirrel dashed up the huge tree on the back of the property chattering away.

So, a sheet is stuck under the bottom “plate” rim of the agitator in my Maytag washing machine.
I looked it up online and, weirdly, this seems to happen with Maytag washers.

Church then home…the thunderstorm , causing the sky to be dark to the west of us, is moving due north…we shall see none of the rains….
Dj I thought those washers only ate one sock of a pair…you have a very special heavy duty washer eating sheets!!

Nj @4:08, haha. Yes, full sheets devoured! Amazing capacity, this washing machine has.
Actually, the “sheet” looks smallish so it may have been one of the pillow cases. Of course, I can’t see all of it, so? Who knows.

There is no reason for us to think the worst about where he is♡ I knew very luttle about him except for hearing his music on the radio.
We did go to Key West once for a conference but saw nothing other than the hotel.
