We had a humdinger of a storm move through last night. Talk about lightening…better than any man made fireworks display!!! The rains fell fast and furious accompanied with slushy hail for us. Others just a mile west of us saw large hail … weirdest summer ever around here. But we thank the Lord for the moisture…
Good morning, all. It has been a beautiful morning here. I have been out and about, poking around here and there, enjoying the Lord ‘s work and participating in my little way.
It is soggy and cool here with overcast skies that are trying to brighten.
I have a pile of mushrooms in a pan to cook to put on some pizzas I will later prepare to freeze. I have never done the frozen pizzas so I hope they work out. I am also trying some new crusts I found in the bread area at Sprouts. I hope they are as good as my usual brands.
We’re getting a heat break from the way it feels, last night I was able to turn off one of the bedroom fans and turned the ceiling fan down notch. This morning feels cool.
My girlfriend in north LA, inland, said they’re in the “low 100s,” ugh, (though that’s not atypical for them in the summer).
I assume that is girlfriend in the sense of my childhood, Dj.
I love the picture. Our cone flowers just started blooming. They are always beautiful. We have so many beautiful ones blooming right now. The flowers put into a new planter after the old one was hit, are taking off again. A couple didn’t make it.
We took our two youngest grandchildren blueberry picking. They were much better at it, than some have been. We never had to worry about any bears sneaking up on us, either, as they seldom stopped talking. There were not a whole lot of berries left. Here they were not as good, while a woman who lives north of us, told me in her 60 yrs. living on the property they have never been this good.
Portland family arrived at 6:30 this morning after driving all night. I was praying for their drive and I’m exhausted. Now going to a family party with my 92 year old stepmom
There is so much to pray for these days. I was awakened by what sounded like loud arguing next door or at a house behind us. I never caught enough to really know what was going on. Maybe someone was drunk. It was an unusual happening so I felt upset about it, mosyly for whoever was involved. I began praying God’s peace over it. Before long all was quiet again. Just really odd to hear anything like that as there was not a party anywhere around here last night when things might be louder than usual.
I just made my old blueberry coffeecake recipe. It called for low fat cream cheese but I only had regular so it has lots of calories. I will freeze if for when son is home.
DJ – I know that you use the word “girlfriend” for “friend”, and I remember when that used to be a more common usage. But these days, someone reading your comment would think that you are referring to a romantic involvement. 🙂
Spanish makes it easier to distinguish between friend and lover. Amigo/amiga = friend; novio/novia = sweetheart (also fiance or groom/bride); amante = lover (used for out-of-marriage romances).
I refer to my close friends as girlfriends still. If they are not or have not been close to me I refer to them as a friend or acquaintance.
I still recall Chas remarking about how we ladies would refer to our close friends as girlfriends but a fella would never refer to their buddy as a boyfriend!
~ Whatever circumstances we may encounter in life, whatever difficulties may befall us, whatever suffering we may have to pass through, we can have the highest confidence that none of it has come apart from the knowledge and the will of God. As the Catechism says, God “watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.” This truth must have been on De Witt Talmage’s mind when he preached these precious words many years ago…
You may ask me a hundred questions I cannot answer, but I shall until the day of my death believe that I am under the unerring care of God.
The heavens may fall and the world may burn and the judgment may thunder and eternal ages may roll, but not a hair shall fall from my head, not a shadow shall drop on my path, not a sorrow shall transfix my heart without being divinely arranged—arranged by a loving, sympathetic Father.
He bottles our tears, he catches our sorrows. To the orphan he will be a father and to the widow he will be a husband and to the outcast he will be a home and to the most miserable wretch who crawls up out of the ditch in his abomination crying for mercy, he will be an all-pardoning God.
The rocks shall turn gray with age and the forests shall be unmoored in the last hurricane, and the sun shall shut its fiery eyelid and the stars shall drop like blasted figs and the continents shall go down like anchors in the deep and the ocean shall heave its last groan and lash itself with expiring agony and the world shall wrap itself in winding sheets of flame and leap on the funeral pyre of the Judgment Day…
…but God’s love shall not die. It will kindle its suns after all other lights have gone out. It will be a billowing sea after the last ocean has wept itself away. It will warm itself by the fire of a consuming world. It will sing while the archangel’s trumpet is pealing forth and the air is filled with the crash of broken sepulchres and the rush of the wings of the rising dead! ~
We’re hitting 75 degrees today, but it still feels “warm” out there. Just turned the ceiling fans on.
This has been a weekend mostly dedicated to cleaning, organizing — or prepping to organize, with online trip to Amazon & actual trip to the Container Store yesterday.
But it’s back to (paid) work tomorrow … Never enough time, it seems.
Found myself again (last night, calling her in from the backyard) sputtering, “Cowboy, I mean Tess … I mean ABBY.” Whatever your name is … Time to come in.
Around here, ATL, we used “girlfriend” in grammar school and later used “best friend” for “that” friend and “friend” for others. I am not sure why we stopped saying “girlfriend” except perhaps that was exclusive to “boyfriend and girlfriend” relationships.
My Sunday school teacher joked about naming his soon expected son Jerubabal. I said they could call him Bubba for short.
One problem I could see would be that someone who knows a little but not a lot about a person could think that she is a Christian and a lesbian, and think that the person’s faith is okay with that. I know that we shouldn’t always care about what others think of us, but we also don’t want to give an impression that would cause someone to have such a misunderstanding.
It does depend, of course, on what the general culture in an area is like. If using “girlfriend” for “friend” is understood to have that meaning, then that’s not a problem. But in some areas, people could get the wrong impression.
Kind of like the word “partner” these days. That has come to often mean a same-sex partner. But there are still business partners, or other kinds of non-romantic partners, and there are also opposite sex couples who refer to each other as their “partner”.
There was a funny scene in the TV show “ER” in which a woman was surprised when a certain man asked her out on a date. She thought he was gay because she had heard him refer to his partner. He laughed, and said that he was referring to his business partner. (And this was back in the 1990s.)
I think here that “partner” would still be used instead of “gitlfriend” for a female same-sex couple if not “married.” Then, I think but don’t know for sure, that they each would refer to the other as “wife.”
Morning! Beautiful photo!

Some here use girlfriend for good friend who is a girl and we really don’t care what others think.
