“Lance Cpl. Hunter Clark, the U.S. Marine seen in viral footage pulling a baby over the wall outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan, is being investigated after he appeared alongside former President Trump at a rally in Georgia.
“The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) has initiated a command investigation regarding LCpl Hunter Clark’s attendance at the event last weekend to determine if any DoD policies were violated,” said spokesman Capt. Kelton J Cochran. “Any details pertaining to this incident are not releasable while the investigation is being conducted.”
Cochran did not specify what policies that Clark may have violated, but the Defense Department does not allow active-duty troops to “speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.” (Task & Purpose)
While it was a Save America rally, Clark, who was not in uniform, was invited on stage by the 45th president “as part of a public show of support for U.S. troops,” according to Task & Purpose.
“We’re also honored to be joined by one of the Marines who bravely served in Kabul during the withdrawal and helped evacuate children over the airport and over the airport wall,” Trump said at the Sept. 25 rally. “You saw him, he did a great job, Lance Cpl. Hunter Ian Clark. Lance corporal get up here!”
Clark called the moment he rescued the baby “probably one of the greatest things I’ve done in my entire life.”
“I just want to thank all the support from all y’all. It really means a lot and I’m glad to be home now,” Clark added.”

“These realities make clear how much we need treatments as well as preventative measures. And we need them as quickly and cheaply as possible. One route to getting there is by investing in repurposing drugs.
Although the world needs new treatments now, drug development is typically neither quick nor cheap. To be sure, the first Covid-19 vaccines were created in under 12 months, but that time frame was unprecedented and rested on years of underlying research.
On average, it costs around $2.6 billion to create a single new drug, and the failure rate is high, with only 12% of experimental medicines making it from the first stage of clinical trials through to FDA approval. The average timeline for a new medicine to reach the marketplace is around 10 years.
This traditional development route is too slow and costly to deal with an ongoing pandemic.
That’s where the more than 20,000 FDA-approved drug products in our medicinal arsenal become key. Some common medications created for one indication are now used for another. Minoxidil, the drug in Rogaine, was developed to treat high blood pressure. Ketamine, now approved to treat major depression, was invented decades earlier as an anesthetic. The list goes on.
Repurposing drugs has immense benefits for both developers and consumers. Risks are greatly reduced, as the drugs have not only gone through safety trials but have been widely used. The availability of safety data shortens the timeline to approval. The need for fewer trials over less time translates into lower development costs.
In fact, repurposed drugs cost 50% to 60% less to develop than new drugs and are generally approved between three and 12 years sooner. Because these medicines have already been vetted as safe, the FDA greenlights about 30% of repurposed drugs seeking approval, almost three times more than new drug applications.
How do companies identify which drugs can potentially be repurposed? In some cases, they learn that doctors have been achieving success by prescribing treatments off-label for a condition other than the one for which the FDA approved the drug. The practice is surprisingly common, accounting for about one-fifth of all prescriptions. It’s most typical when the conditions are relatively similar — such as using a therapy approved for stomach cancer to treat colon cancer. Sometimes, though, the conditions are very different. For instance, modafinil is approved to treat sleep disorders, but some doctors have found it effective for depression as well.
In other cases, companies approach drug repurposing by looking through the lab and clinical trial data on their medicines to see if any of the “side effects” could be beneficial in treating other diseases. That’s what happened with sildenafil, better known as Viagra. It was originally designed as treatment for heart-related chest pain but its other attributes, shall we say, became readily apparent in the clinical trials.
Some companies are even doing virtual repurposing: analyzing massive amounts of data in search of links between diseases that, based on symptoms, would seem to have nothing in common.
Companies typically still need to submit all the normal clinical trial data to secure FDA approval on a repurposed drug. No shortcuts are taken. But the process is quicker and cheaper because, in many cases, at least part of the necessary data already exist — it’s simply a matter of repackaging.
Repurposing drugs has already saved many lives during the pandemic. Veklury (the brand name for remdesivir) was originally developed to fight Ebola but turns out to help people with severe Covid-19. The FDA approved it for this new use last year. The agency has granted emergency use authorization for Olumiant (baricitinib), first developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, as a tool against Covid-19.
There are hundreds of promising drug repurposing projects in the pipeline for approval. Tavalisse (fostamatinib), currently used to treat a bleeding disorder, has shown positive results in treating Covid-19. Phase 2 trial data, newly published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, indicated that fostamatinib improved outcomes — including mortality, time to sustained recovery, and number of days on oxygen — for hospitalized Covid-19 patients. Phase 3 trials are underway and expected to be completed by this year’s end.
Meanwhile, studies show that another rheumatoid arthritis drug, Actemra (tocilizumab), may reduce the death rate from Covid-19.”

“Japan became the latest country to accept that COVID-19 is endemic and return itself back to normalcy.
Japan’s government announced Tuesday that the coronavirus state of emergency will end this week to help rejuvenate the economy as infections slow.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the emergency will end Thursday and virus restrictions will be eased gradually “in order to resume daily lives despite the presence of the virus.” He said the government will create more temporary COVID-19 treatment facilities and continue vaccinations to prepare for any future resurgence.
“Our fight against the coronavirus is now entering a new phase,” Suga said. “Finally, we can see social and economic activities starting to normalize.”
Japanese officials are weighing the use of vaccine passports and virus tests.
Japan’s current state of emergency, declared in April, was repeatedly extended and expanded. Despite public weariness and frustration over the measures, Japan has managed to avoid the more restrictive lockdowns imposed elsewhere while recording about 1.69 million cases and 17,500 deaths from COVID-19.
The emergency and other measures in all 27 prefectures expire at the end of September. Some experts want the state of emergency in 19 areas to be eased to a quasi-emergency first to ensure infections don’t quickly rebound, and the government is reportedly considering the strategy.
The emergency has mainly been in the form of requests for restaurants and bars to open for shorter hours and not serve alcohol. Governors in Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto have said they plan to keep those requests in place while closely monitoring the virus situations.
The country is also loosening quarantine restrictions for people entering the country who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, shortening the required period for self-isolating at home from 14 days to 10 days.”
“There’s always press coverage about Republican mismanagement or Republicans getting into trouble governing as ideologues, but you don’t hear much about the reverse. There’s a lot to critique about Republicans, but for mismanagement and for blindly putting ideology above all else, President Joe Biden may be the all-time champ.
Biden campaigned as a pragmatist who could bring stability and national unification. His inaugural address was all about these themes. America needs some level of national healing more than anything else. Americans can’t go on at each other’s throats. The country is falling apart.
Biden deserved praise for starting his presidency with a message of healing. I did an entire column to compliment him for it.
Since taking office, however, Biden has not made any effort to back up his pledge. He has governed not just as a wild-eyed ideologue but as an incompetent one, too. America is paying the price. If any Republican president tried to implement such an extremist agenda, the press would hammer it daily. The press likes Biden’s left-wing policies, so they downplay the radical nature of what we are going through and cover the incompetence with a light touch, if at all.
On Afghanistan, pretty much all of America wanted out. What most Americans wanted, though, was a safe exit that considered America’s long-term security needs. Biden’s agenda was driven by the desire to have everything finished by the 20-year anniversary of 9/11. It’s hard to imagine that symbolism drove the entire agenda for such an important matter, but looking at the facts, that’s all you can conclude. Biden risked countless American lives and harmed long-term security, essentially for a photo op.
In the wake of the catastrophe, and after innocent Americans lost their lives, Biden said he was following his military leadership’s advice. This week, his military leaders testified to Congress. For very good reasons, they aren’t allowed to say it directly, but the clear message of the testimony is that the president is lying about what advice he received. Military leaders wanted to leave more troops behind to secure a safe exit. Military leaders would have secured the Bagram Air Base we fought so hard to build up and defend. Of course they would have. Abandoning Bagram and having no one at all to keep track of the terrorists on the ground is moronic. But that’s just what the president ordered.
The second completely self-generated Biden crisis is immigration. As with many other issues, it’s now apparent that more than anything else, Biden’s goal was to undo what former President Donald Trump had done on immigration. The dominant far-left activist wing of his party had campaigned on open borders. This is not a concept that sane people find comforting. Countries need borders. Biden claims to understand this, but his actions to date have destroyed the border security measures in place when he took office.
To recap, when Trump first took office, the southern border was in crisis. Human smugglers and left-wing activists realized there was no need to sneak across our border; if a migrant showed up and claimed political asylum and a fear of persecution in their home country, we would release them to an American community until a hearing could be held. The vast majority would then never show up for the hearing. Our goodwill was abused by those seeking to game our system.
Trump responded to this crisis with a few policies that worked. Most prominent is the “Remain in Mexico” program, launched in January 2019, which required that asylum-seekers wait in Mexico for the entire duration of their immigration court proceedings. This policy eliminated the possibility of “catch and release,” where migrants are able to escape into the interior of our country after claiming asylum. After implementing “Remain in Mexico” and a few other innovative policies, border enforcement operations dropped over 70% from their peak of 144,000 in May 2019. It wasn’t perfect, but some form of order was restored at our southern border.
Biden came in and rescinded all these Trump policies. He did so on purely ideological grounds. That’s his right as president, but he did it with no plan in place of his own. The results have been a complete mess. After dropping to a low of 17,000 monthly encounters under Trump, Border Patrol is back up to a record 200,000-plus border encounters per month under Biden.”

“Special Counsel John Durham, the attorney tapped by the Trump administration to audit the Russia investigation, has reportedly handed down a new set of subpoenas, including to a law firm with ties to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
The grand jury subpoenas for documents were issued earlier this month, according to CNN, after Durham charged Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann for allegedly knowingly making a false statement to the FBI.
Investigators from the special counsel’s office are seeking additional documents from Sussmann’s former law firm, Perkins Coie, an indication that Durham may be looking to add to Sussmann’s charges or to bring cases against other defendants.
Durham was reportedly investigating whether Sussmann lied to the FBI regarding who — if anyone — he was representing when he told the Bureau about communications between the Trump Organization and the Kremlin-connected Russian bank Alfa Bank.
The indictment against Sussmann states that the former federal prosecutor lied to top FBI lawyer James Baker in a meeting on September 19, 2016. At that time, Sussmann presented data and analysis from cybersecurity researchers who suspected the Trump Organization was using a secret server to communicate with Alfa Bank.
The secret server theory was ultimately dismissed and never appeared in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report.
Durham uncovered discrepancies between Sussmann’s congressional testimony and his September interview with Baker. Before Congress, Sussmann testified that he was working on the Alfa Bank project for an unnamed cybersecurity expert, a contradiction of his claims to Baker that he wasn’t working for any specific client.
Meanwhile, Perkins Coie’s internal billing records obtained by Durham show that Sussmann billed hours spent on the Alfa Bank project to Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
The law firm’s clients at the time included the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Perkins Coie also hired, on behalf of the campaign, a research company that commissioned the dossier from former British spy Christopher Steele that claimed former President Trump was compromised by Russia.”

True to form, even Network made a pile of money and won four Oscars.

Back then, a few networks dominated, and the trend was the One Big Lie: the Missile Gap, the Domino Theory, 4 out of 5 dentists recommend Trident. What could be worse? The only thing darker than Network’s dystopian future with television as the national religion is the world we’ve got: two religions.
The last week has been typical of life in the news-as-doctrinal-squabble era. On Sunday, September 19, a freelance photographer named Paul Ratje based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, shot pictures of U.S. Border Patrol Agents chasing Haitian migrants trying to cross the border. In several photos, the agents appeared to be carrying lengths of leather cord. The next day, a former aide to onetime presidential candidate Julian Castro named Sawyer Hackett tweeted, “Border patrol is mounted on horseback rounding up Haitian refugees with whips,” and “This is unfathomable cruelty towards people fleeing disaster and political ruin.”
In reality, as poor Ratje would later point out to local news interviewers, there were no whips, just reins, and “I’ve never seen them whip anyone.” But by then, the story was a viral sensation that had gone all the way to the top of American society.
On that same Monday, September 20th that Sawyer Hackett tweeted about “rounding up refugees with whips,” a reporter asked White House spokesperson Jen Psaki if the administration viewed “border agents on horseback using what appeared to be whips on Haitian migrants” as an “appropriate tactic.” Psaki said no, it was “obviously horrific,” but this apparently wasn’t a good enough answer for the faithful. MSNBC/NBC contributor and proud Moral Majoritarian Yamiche Alcindor demanded to know if action would be taken on a double-conditional: “if this is true,” if anyone would be disciplined for “using what seems to be whips on migrants.” When Psaki finally suggested waiting to comment until she actually knew something about the incident, Alcindor pressed: “Why won’t you say fired?”
In a flash, the word “whip” was in headlines across media and social media, and the idea that Border Patrol agents had hit Haitian refugees with actual whips was ubiquitous. (To my embarrassment, even I screwed this one up, making a joke about it on the Useful Idiots podcast).
Look, this happens in media, and the only thing you can do is a) try to avoid it, and b) own up to it when it happens. However, that’s where this story got weird. Well after it became clear there were no whips in the story, a parade of politicians lined up to double down, with Kamala Harris saying the pictures evoked images of “slavery,” Representative Maxine Waters saying the pictures were “worse than what we witnessed in slavery,” and even President Biden himself promising his own agents would “pay” for “strapping” refugees. An investigation was ordered and some employees were removed to administrative duties.
Even the New York Times, five days after the photograph was taken, reported that Border Agents were “in some cases using reins to strike at running migrants.” They almost immediately issued a correction, saying they’d “overstated what is known” about the Agents’ behavior. Meanwhile, the Fox/OAN wing of the press put out a string of stories about the “whips” mistake, going after everyone from Brian Stelter to CNN’s Victor Blackwell to Axios (which deleted a tweet using the word “whipping’) to Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler to a host of others.
Larger questions, like what happened to the 15,000 migrants who were removed from an encampment — some were flown back to Haiti right away, others will likely be flown back later, with the Biden administration essentially continuing Trump-era policy — faded into the coverage background. Most people following the news emerged knowing a tiny bit about the relevant border-tightening policies like Trump’s Title 42, and a lot about a single, apparently misinterpreted image that became the latest moronic proxy for a culture war debate.
A more significant media screwup was exposed via the release of a book called “The Bidens” by Politico correspondent Ben Schreckinger. Schreckinger showed the New York Post’s Hunter Biden expose was not, as widely reported last year, Russian disinformation, with many of the more controversial emails involving the president’s son now proved authentic. This too was also roundly ignored by a press corps more worried about a big picture message, i.e. that Biden is less awful than Trump. Even NPR kept mum about Schreckinger’s new information, despite having insisted cheekily at the time that it non-covered the story because it didn’t want to “waste its time” on things that are “not really stories.”
News in America used to be fun to talk about, fun to joke about, interesting to think about. Now it’s an interminable bummer, because the press business has taken on characteristics of that other institution where talking, joking, and thinking aren’t allowed: church. We have two denominations, both as fact-averse as real churches, as is shown in polls about, say, pandemic attitudes, where Americans across the board consistently show they know less than they think.
Surveys found a third of Republicans think the asymptomatic don’t transmit Covid-19, or that the disease kills fewer people than the flu or car crashes. But Democrats also test out atrociously, with 41% thinking Covid-19 patients end up hospitalized over half the time — the real number is 1%-5% — while also wildly overestimating dangers to children, the percentage of Covid deaths under the age of 65, the efficacy of masks, and other issues.
This is the result of narrative-driven coverage that focuses huge amounts of resources on the wrongness of the rival faith. Blue audiences love stories about the deathbed recantations of red-state Covid deniers, some of which are real, some more dubious. A typical Fox story, meanwhile, might involve a woman who passed out and crashed into a telephone pole while wearing a mask alone in her car. Tales of each other’s stupidity are the new national religion, and especially among erstwhile liberals, we take them more seriously than any religion has been taken in the smart set in a long, long time.”
“The Biden border crisis has reached the point where even some of the cable news networks have felt compelled to talk about it. For many, it seems as if the coverage of the debacle at Del Rio was the final straw. The President’s approval rating for his handling of the border situation is approaching single digits in some areas. Surely Joe Biden has directed the Department of Homeland Security to take steps to get things under control, right? You bet he has. A new memo issued by DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas this week sets forth new guidelines for the arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal aliens crossing the border into the United States. The solution they’ve come up with is certainly unique. Since there are more people crossing the borders now than they can possibly arrest and detain, we’re just going to stop doing that for most of them and let them go on their way. (NY Post)
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ordered authorities Thursday to prioritize illegal immigrants for deportation who “pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security” — claiming that the government does not have the resources to apprehend every person who has entered the US unlawfully.
“The fact an individual is a removable noncitizen … should not alone be the basis of an enforcement action against them,” reads the seven-page memo from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “We will use our discretion and focus our enforcement resources in a more targeted way. Justice and our country’s well-being require it.” …
Authorities would also be prohibited from arresting and seeking to deport someone in retaliation for exercising First Amendment rights, such as joining a protest or taking part in union activities, Mayorkas wrote.
That’s a pretty staggering admission from the Biden administration, isn’t it? The United States “does not have the resources to apprehend every person who has entered the US unlawfully.”
So who will be getting a free pass? First of all, pretty much anyone that they can’t find a criminal record on. They will be interviewed and released. But the list doesn’t stop there. An illegal alien’s status will not be determined “according to bright lines,” according to Mayorkas. His memo goes on to say that there can be “mitigating factors” that would prevent the deportation of illegal aliens known to have committed crimes. Those factors will include “advanced or tender age” and “lengthy presence in the United States.” Also, any potential “impact on family members in the United States” caused by their deportation must be taken into consideration.
So criminal illegal aliens can be given a pass if they are too young or too old. Also, if they have been in the country for a long time. How long? The memo specifically instructs border agents to focus their efforts on migrants who arrived in the country “after Nov. 1, 2020.” That’s eleven months. If you’ve managed to avoid being caught or arrested for eleven months you’re pretty much good to go. Are they serious?”
“A global trial of the pill enrolled 775 people with mild or moderate covid-19. Participants had at least one risk factor for severe covid-19, such as obesity or advanced age. They had to start the drug regimen within five days of symptom onset and be unvaccinated.”

“The problem of domestic terrorism has been metastasizing across the country for a long time now, and it’s not going away anytime soon.”
Since he became director in 2017, said Wray, FBI domestic terrorism investigations had doubled in number to more than 2,000, and FBI investigations of white supremacists had tripled.
Listening to Wray, one came away with the impression that right-wing terrorism was our foremost internal security issue, that the Jan. 6 riot was a manifestation of that terrorism, and that white supremacists top the list of dangerous enemies inside our own country.
The vast turnout of police and press for the Sept. 18 protest on the Mall to demand fairness for the Jan. 6 “patriots” suggested that our elites shared Wray’s alarm.
All seemed disappointed when the brownshirts failed to show up.
Yet, with this week’s release of FBI statistics on violent crime in America, showing a record 30% surge in homicides in 2020 over 2019, questions arise.
What caused the number of U.S. victims of murder and manslaughter to explode by almost 5,000 last year to reach a total of 21,500? Why are homicides rising another 10% this year? Why are murders and manslaughters rising so dramatically in the USA?
For that number of killings, 21,500 in 2021, is three times the number of U.S. soldiers dead in 20 years of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The New York Times and Washington Post both made the FBI figures front-page news. And the Times gave some insight as to who the victims of homicide in this country were and are.
Here is the relevant passage in the Times story:
“The (FBI) report … breaks down last year’s homicide victims by race, ethnicity and sex, although not all law enforcement agencies provided such data. Of the people killed in 2020, at least 9,913 were Black, 7,029 were white, 497 were from other races and 315 were of unknown race. There were at least 14,146 men killed and 3,573 women.”
The startling number here: There were nearly 3,000 more Black victims who wound up dead in America from criminal violence than there were white victims, though Blacks, at 12-13% of the U.S. population, are only one-fifth the size of the white population.
Translation: Black Americans are being shot, stabbed and beaten to death at a rate six to seven times that of whites. And by the end of this year, well over 10,000 Blacks will have been made the victims of homicide in America.
That figure breaks down to roughly 200 Black folks dead every single week in this country from gunshot wounds and other criminal violence — a weekly death toll that rivals U.S. losses in Vietnam at the height of the war.
The question unanswered and unasked in the Times’ and Post’s stories is: Who is doing this? Who is killing all these Black people?”

The government has fully approved the COVID-19 vaccine for individuals ages 16 and older, meaning all upper-class high school students will need to be fully vaccinated to attend both public and private schools.
Only an emergency authorization has been granted for anyone 12 to 15. When the FDA approves the vaccine for that age group, students in seventh grade and up also be required to get vaccinated. The requirement is foreseen to be implemented in the next term, either Jan. 1 or July 1 of 2022.”

“Lance Cpl. Hunter Clark, the U.S. Marine seen in viral footage pulling a baby over the wall outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan, is being investigated after he appeared alongside former President Trump at a rally in Georgia.
“The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) has initiated a command investigation regarding LCpl Hunter Clark’s attendance at the event last weekend to determine if any DoD policies were violated,” said spokesman Capt. Kelton J Cochran. “Any details pertaining to this incident are not releasable while the investigation is being conducted.”
Cochran did not specify what policies that Clark may have violated, but the Defense Department does not allow active-duty troops to “speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate, or cause.” (Task & Purpose)
While it was a Save America rally, Clark, who was not in uniform, was invited on stage by the 45th president “as part of a public show of support for U.S. troops,” according to Task & Purpose.

“These realities make clear how much we need treatments as well as preventative measures. And we need them as quickly and cheaply as possible. One route to getting there is by investing in repurposing drugs.
Although the world needs new treatments now, drug development is typically neither quick nor cheap. To be sure, the first Covid-19 vaccines were created in under 12 months, but that time frame was unprecedented and rested on years of underlying research.
On average, it costs around $2.6 billion to create a single new drug, and the failure rate is high, with only 12% of experimental medicines making it from the first stage of clinical trials through to FDA approval. The average timeline for a new medicine to reach the marketplace is around 10 years.
This traditional development route is too slow and costly to deal with an ongoing pandemic.
That’s where the more than 20,000 FDA-approved drug products in our medicinal arsenal become key. Some common medications created for one indication are now used for another. Minoxidil, the drug in Rogaine, was developed to treat high blood pressure. Ketamine, now approved to treat major depression, was invented decades earlier as an anesthetic. The list goes on.
Repurposing drugs has immense benefits for both developers and consumers. Risks are greatly reduced, as the drugs have not only gone through safety trials but have been widely used. The availability of safety data shortens the timeline to approval. The need for fewer trials over less time translates into lower development costs.
In fact, repurposed drugs cost 50% to 60% less to develop than new drugs and are generally approved between three and 12 years sooner. Because these medicines have already been vetted as safe, the FDA greenlights about 30% of repurposed drugs seeking approval, almost three times more than new drug applications.
How do companies identify which drugs can potentially be repurposed? In some cases, they learn that doctors have been achieving success by prescribing treatments off-label for a condition other than the one for which the FDA approved the drug. The practice is surprisingly common, accounting for about one-fifth of all prescriptions. It’s most typical when the conditions are relatively similar — such as using a therapy approved for stomach cancer to treat colon cancer. Sometimes, though, the conditions are very different. For instance, modafinil is approved to treat sleep disorders, but some doctors have found it effective for depression as well.
In other cases, companies approach drug repurposing by looking through the lab and clinical trial data on their medicines to see if any of the “side effects” could be beneficial in treating other diseases. That’s what happened with sildenafil, better known as Viagra. It was originally designed as treatment for heart-related chest pain but its other attributes, shall we say, became readily apparent in the clinical trials.
Some companies are even doing virtual repurposing: analyzing massive amounts of data in search of links between diseases that, based on symptoms, would seem to have nothing in common.
Companies typically still need to submit all the normal clinical trial data to secure FDA approval on a repurposed drug. No shortcuts are taken. But the process is quicker and cheaper because, in many cases, at least part of the necessary data already exist — it’s simply a matter of repackaging.
Repurposing drugs has already saved many lives during the pandemic. Veklury (the brand name for remdesivir) was originally developed to fight Ebola but turns out to help people with severe Covid-19. The FDA approved it for this new use last year. The agency has granted emergency use authorization for Olumiant (baricitinib), first developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, as a tool against Covid-19.
There are hundreds of promising drug repurposing projects in the pipeline for approval. Tavalisse (fostamatinib), currently used to treat a bleeding disorder, has shown positive results in treating Covid-19. Phase 2 trial data, newly published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, indicated that fostamatinib improved outcomes — including mortality, time to sustained recovery, and number of days on oxygen — for hospitalized Covid-19 patients. Phase 3 trials are underway and expected to be completed by this year’s end.
Meanwhile, studies show that another rheumatoid arthritis drug, Actemra (tocilizumab), may reduce the death rate from Covid-19.”

Japan’s government announced Tuesday that the coronavirus state of emergency will end this week to help rejuvenate the economy as infections slow.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the emergency will end Thursday and virus restrictions will be eased gradually “in order to resume daily lives despite the presence of the virus.” He said the government will create more temporary COVID-19 treatment facilities and continue vaccinations to prepare for any future resurgence.
“Our fight against the coronavirus is now entering a new phase,” Suga said. “Finally, we can see social and economic activities starting to normalize.”
Japanese officials are weighing the use of vaccine passports and virus tests.
Japan’s current state of emergency, declared in April, was repeatedly extended and expanded. Despite public weariness and frustration over the measures, Japan has managed to avoid the more restrictive lockdowns imposed elsewhere while recording about 1.69 million cases and 17,500 deaths from COVID-19.
The emergency and other measures in all 27 prefectures expire at the end of September. Some experts want the state of emergency in 19 areas to be eased to a quasi-emergency first to ensure infections don’t quickly rebound, and the government is reportedly considering the strategy.
The emergency has mainly been in the form of requests for restaurants and bars to open for shorter hours and not serve alcohol. Governors in Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto have said they plan to keep those requests in place while closely monitoring the virus situations.
The country is also loosening quarantine restrictions for people entering the country who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, shortening the required period for self-isolating at home from 14 days to 10 days.”

“There’s always press coverage about Republican mismanagement or Republicans getting into trouble governing as ideologues, but you don’t hear much about the reverse. There’s a lot to critique about Republicans, but for mismanagement and for blindly putting ideology above all else, President Joe Biden may be the all-time champ.
Biden campaigned as a pragmatist who could bring stability and national unification. His inaugural address was all about these themes. America needs some level of national healing more than anything else. Americans can’t go on at each other’s throats. The country is falling apart.
Biden deserved praise for starting his presidency with a message of healing. I did an entire column to compliment him for it.
Since taking office, however, Biden has not made any effort to back up his pledge. He has governed not just as a wild-eyed ideologue but as an incompetent one, too. America is paying the price. If any Republican president tried to implement such an extremist agenda, the press would hammer it daily. The press likes Biden’s left-wing policies, so they downplay the radical nature of what we are going through and cover the incompetence with a light touch, if at all.
On Afghanistan, pretty much all of America wanted out. What most Americans wanted, though, was a safe exit that considered America’s long-term security needs. Biden’s agenda was driven by the desire to have everything finished by the 20-year anniversary of 9/11. It’s hard to imagine that symbolism drove the entire agenda for such an important matter, but looking at the facts, that’s all you can conclude. Biden risked countless American lives and harmed long-term security, essentially for a photo op.
In the wake of the catastrophe, and after innocent Americans lost their lives, Biden said he was following his military leadership’s advice. This week, his military leaders testified to Congress. For very good reasons, they aren’t allowed to say it directly, but the clear message of the testimony is that the president is lying about what advice he received. Military leaders wanted to leave more troops behind to secure a safe exit. Military leaders would have secured the Bagram Air Base we fought so hard to build up and defend. Of course they would have. Abandoning Bagram and having no one at all to keep track of the terrorists on the ground is moronic. But that’s just what the president ordered.
The second completely self-generated Biden crisis is immigration. As with many other issues, it’s now apparent that more than anything else, Biden’s goal was to undo what former President Donald Trump had done on immigration. The dominant far-left activist wing of his party had campaigned on open borders. This is not a concept that sane people find comforting. Countries need borders. Biden claims to understand this, but his actions to date have destroyed the border security measures in place when he took office.
To recap, when Trump first took office, the southern border was in crisis. Human smugglers and left-wing activists realized there was no need to sneak across our border; if a migrant showed up and claimed political asylum and a fear of persecution in their home country, we would release them to an American community until a hearing could be held. The vast majority would then never show up for the hearing. Our goodwill was abused by those seeking to game our system.
Trump responded to this crisis with a few policies that worked. Most prominent is the “Remain in Mexico” program, launched in January 2019, which required that asylum-seekers wait in Mexico for the entire duration of their immigration court proceedings. This policy eliminated the possibility of “catch and release,” where migrants are able to escape into the interior of our country after claiming asylum. After implementing “Remain in Mexico” and a few other innovative policies, border enforcement operations dropped over 70% from their peak of 144,000 in May 2019. It wasn’t perfect, but some form of order was restored at our southern border.
Biden came in and rescinded all these Trump policies. He did so on purely ideological grounds. That’s his right as president, but he did it with no plan in place of his own. The results have been a complete mess. After dropping to a low of 17,000 monthly encounters under Trump, Border Patrol is back up to a record 200,000-plus border encounters per month under Biden.”

The grand jury subpoenas for documents were issued earlier this month, according to CNN, after Durham charged Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann for allegedly knowingly making a false statement to the FBI.
Investigators from the special counsel’s office are seeking additional documents from Sussmann’s former law firm, Perkins Coie, an indication that Durham may be looking to add to Sussmann’s charges or to bring cases against other defendants.
Durham was reportedly investigating whether Sussmann lied to the FBI regarding who — if anyone — he was representing when he told the Bureau about communications between the Trump Organization and the Kremlin-connected Russian bank Alfa Bank.
The indictment against Sussmann states that the former federal prosecutor lied to top FBI lawyer James Baker in a meeting on September 19, 2016. At that time, Sussmann presented data and analysis from cybersecurity researchers who suspected the Trump Organization was using a secret server to communicate with Alfa Bank.
The secret server theory was ultimately dismissed and never appeared in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report.
Durham uncovered discrepancies between Sussmann’s congressional testimony and his September interview with Baker. Before Congress, Sussmann testified that he was working on the Alfa Bank project for an unnamed cybersecurity expert, a contradiction of his claims to Baker that he wasn’t working for any specific client.
Meanwhile, Perkins Coie’s internal billing records obtained by Durham show that Sussmann billed hours spent on the Alfa Bank project to Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
The law firm’s clients at the time included the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Perkins Coie also hired, on behalf of the campaign, a research company that commissioned the dossier from former British spy Christopher Steele that claimed former President Trump was compromised by Russia.”

“After a few days away from the news I watched Network, a movie about a mad prophet whose prophesies come true. Anchorman Howard Beale’s seminal speech described how America could commoditize anything, even the awful truth that its mass media had raised an illiterate populace that followed The Tube as the word of God. “Turn them off!” Beale screamed, just before collapsing in religious fervor, but one eye peeked out to see how his revelation was selling. True to form, even Network made a pile of money and won four Oscars.
Forty-five years later, the film’s predictions still look right, but too optimistic. Back then, a few networks dominated, and the trend was the One Big Lie: the Missile Gap, the Domino Theory, 4 out of 5 dentists recommend Trident. What could be worse? Ambrose Bierce once said there were only two things more horrible than a clarinet — two clarinets. The only thing darker than Network’s dystopian future with television as the national religion is the world we’ve got: two religions.
The last week has been typical of life in the news-as-doctrinal-squabble era. On Sunday, September 19, a freelance photographer named Paul Ratje based in Las Cruces, New Mexico, shot pictures of U.S. Border Patrol Agents chasing Haitian migrants trying to cross the border. In several photos, the agents appeared to be carrying lengths of leather cord. The next day, a former aide to onetime presidential candidate Julian Castro named Sawyer Hackett tweeted, “Border patrol is mounted on horseback rounding up Haitian refugees with whips,” and “This is unfathomable cruelty towards people fleeing disaster and political ruin.”
In reality, as poor Ratje would later point out to local news interviewers, there were no whips, just reins, and “I’ve never seen them whip anyone.” But by then, the story was a viral sensation that had gone all the way to the top of American society.
On that same Monday, September 20th that Sawyer Hackett tweeted about “rounding up refugees with whips,” a reporter asked White House spokesperson Jen Psaki if the administration viewed “border agents on horseback using what appeared to be whips on Haitian migrants” as an “appropriate tactic.” Psaki said no, it was “obviously horrific,” but this apparently wasn’t a good enough answer for the faithful. MSNBC/NBC contributor and proud Moral Majoritarian Yamiche Alcindor demanded to know if action would be taken on a double-conditional: “if this is true,” if anyone would be disciplined for “using what seems to be whips on migrants.” When Psaki finally suggested waiting to comment until she actually knew something about the incident, Alcindor pressed: “Why won’t you say fired?”
In a flash, the word “whip” was in headlines across media and social media, and the idea that Border Patrol agents had hit Haitian refugees with actual whips was ubiquitous. (To my embarrassment, even I screwed this one up, making a joke about it on the Useful Idiots podcast).
Look, this happens in media, and the only thing you can do is a) try to avoid it, and b) own up to it when it happens. However, that’s where this story got weird. Well after it became clear there were no whips in the story, a parade of politicians lined up to double down, with Kamala Harris saying the pictures evoked images of “slavery,” Representative Maxine Waters saying the pictures were “worse than what we witnessed in slavery,” and even President Biden himself promising his own agents would “pay” for “strapping” refugees. An investigation was ordered and some employees were removed to administrative duties.
Even the New York Times, five days after the photograph was taken, reported that Border Agents were “in some cases using reins to strike at running migrants.” They almost immediately issued a correction, saying they’d “overstated what is known” about the Agents’ behavior. Meanwhile, the Fox/OAN wing of the press put out a string of stories about the “whips” mistake, going after everyone from Brian Stelter to CNN’s Victor Blackwell to Axios (which deleted a tweet using the word “whipping’) to Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler to a host of others.
Larger questions, like what happened to the 15,000 migrants who were removed from an encampment — some were flown back to Haiti right away, others will likely be flown back later, with the Biden administration essentially continuing Trump-era policy — faded into the coverage background. Most people following the news emerged knowing a tiny bit about the relevant border-tightening policies like Trump’s Title 42, and a lot about a single, apparently misinterpreted image that became the latest moronic proxy for a culture war debate.
A more significant media screwup was exposed via the release of a book called “The Bidens” by Politico correspondent Ben Schreckinger. Schreckinger showed the New York Post’s Hunter Biden expose was not, as widely reported last year, Russian disinformation, with many of the more controversial emails involving the president’s son now proved authentic. This too was also roundly ignored by a press corps more worried about a big picture message, i.e. that Biden is less awful than Trump. Even NPR kept mum about Schreckinger’s new information, despite having insisted cheekily at the time that it non-covered the story because it didn’t want to “waste its time” on things that are “not really stories.”
News in America used to be fun to talk about, fun to joke about, interesting to think about. Now it’s an interminable bummer, because the press business has taken on characteristics of that other institution where talking, joking, and thinking aren’t allowed: church. We have two denominations, both as fact-averse as real churches, as is shown in polls about, say, pandemic attitudes, where Americans across the board consistently show they know less than they think.
Surveys found a third of Republicans think the asymptomatic don’t transmit Covid-19, or that the disease kills fewer people than the flu or car crashes. But Democrats also test out atrociously, with 41% thinking Covid-19 patients end up hospitalized over half the time — the real number is 1%-5% — while also wildly overestimating dangers to children, the percentage of Covid deaths under the age of 65, the efficacy of masks, and other issues.
This is the result of narrative-driven coverage that focuses huge amounts of resources on the wrongness of the rival faith. Blue audiences love stories about the deathbed recantations of red-state Covid deniers, some of which are real, some more dubious. A typical Fox story, meanwhile, might involve a woman who passed out and crashed into a telephone pole while wearing a mask alone in her car. Tales of each other’s stupidity are the new national religion, and especially among erstwhile liberals, we take them more seriously than any religion has been taken in the smart set in a long, long time.”

A new memo issued by DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas this week sets forth new guidelines for the arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal aliens crossing the border into the United States. The solution they’ve come up with is certainly unique. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ordered authorities Thursday to prioritize illegal immigrants for deportation who “pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security” — claiming that the government does not have the resources to apprehend every person who has entered the US unlawfully.
“The fact an individual is a removable noncitizen … should not alone be the basis of an enforcement action against them,” reads the seven-page memo from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “We will use our discretion and focus our enforcement resources in a more targeted way. Justice and our country’s well-being require it.” …
Authorities would also be prohibited from arresting and seeking to deport someone in retaliation for exercising First Amendment rights, such as joining a protest or taking part in union activities, Mayorkas wrote.
That’s a pretty staggering admission from the Biden administration, isn’t it? The United States “does not have the resources to apprehend every person who has entered the US unlawfully.”
So who will be getting a free pass? First of all, pretty much anyone that they can’t find a criminal record on. They will be interviewed and released. But the list doesn’t stop there. An illegal alien’s status will not be determined “according to bright lines,” according to Mayorkas. His memo goes on to say that there can be “mitigating factors” that would prevent the deportation of illegal aliens known to have committed crimes. Those factors will include “advanced or tender age” and “lengthy presence in the United States.” Also, any potential “impact on family members in the United States” caused by their deportation must be taken into consideration.
So criminal illegal aliens can be given a pass if they are too young or too old. Also, if they have been in the country for a long time. How long? The memo specifically instructs border agents to focus their efforts on migrants who arrived in the country “after Nov. 1, 2020.” That’s eleven months. If you’ve managed to avoid being caught or arrested for eleven months you’re pretty much good to go. Are they serious?”

“”Unfortunately, Jan. 6 was not an isolated event,” warned FBI Director Christopher Wray last winter:
“The problem of domestic terrorism has been metastasizing across the country for a long time now, and it’s not going away anytime soon.”
Since he became director in 2017, said Wray, FBI domestic terrorism investigations had doubled in number to more than 2,000, and FBI investigations of white supremacists had tripled.
Listening to Wray, one came away with the impression that right-wing terrorism was our foremost internal security issue, that the Jan. 6 riot was a manifestation of that terrorism, and that white supremacists top the list of dangerous enemies inside our own country.
The vast turnout of police and press for the Sept. 18 protest on the Mall to demand fairness for the Jan. 6 “patriots” suggested that our elites shared Wray’s alarm.
All seemed disappointed when the brownshirts failed to show up.
Yet, with this week’s release of FBI statistics on violent crime in America, showing a record 30% surge in homicides in 2020 over 2019, questions arise.
What caused the number of U.S. victims of murder and manslaughter to explode by almost 5,000 last year to reach a total of 21,500? Why are homicides rising another 10% this year? Why are murders and manslaughters rising so dramatically in the USA?
For that number of killings, 21,500 in 2021, is three times the number of U.S. soldiers dead in 20 years of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The New York Times and Washington Post both made the FBI figures front-page news. And the Times gave some insight as to who the victims of homicide in this country were and are.
Here is the relevant passage in the Times story:
“The (FBI) report … breaks down last year’s homicide victims by race, ethnicity and sex, although not all law enforcement agencies provided such data. Of the people killed in 2020, at least 9,913 were Black, 7,029 were white, 497 were from other races and 315 were of unknown race. There were at least 14,146 men killed and 3,573 women.”
The startling number here: There were nearly 3,000 more Black victims who wound up dead in America from criminal violence than there were white victims, though Blacks, at 12-13% of the U.S. population, are only one-fifth the size of the white population.
Translation: Black Americans are being shot, stabbed and beaten to death at a rate six to seven times that of whites. And by the end of this year, well over 10,000 Blacks will have been made the victims of homicide in America.
That figure breaks down to roughly 200 Black folks dead every single week in this country from gunshot wounds and other criminal violence — a weekly death toll that rivals U.S. losses in Vietnam at the height of the war.
The question unanswered and unasked in the Times’ and Post’s stories is: Who is doing this? Who is killing all these Black people?”
