  1. Happy Birthday to Liz! Purple is my favorite color, and the birthday girl wears it well. 🙂

Yes and yikes on the lightning strike so soon after! Glad you’re all OK.

Wish Liz a blessed day for me.

  2. Which is not doubt why I limit my reading to the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series. If I ever get a chance to pick it up and read, I have not forgotten what I am reading because I have read it so many times!

  3. Happy Birthday to Elizabeth!

AJ – She prefers Elizabeth to Liz, doesn’t she? Or has she changed her mind on that? I knew a girl who was Elizabeth for many years, then changed to Liz. Another friend is generally known as Liz, but prefers Lizzie. She loves that I call her that.

  4. I need to start my real work now, but so far today has been taken up with my second (unpaid) job, wildlife photographer. I’m not complaining! Let’s see . . .

I woke up just a bit before 7:00, briefly wondered if I could go back to sleep but realized it was a good time to get out and get some photos. (I haven’t been down to my pond for three or four days. My husband and I walked elsewhere Monday.) I expected to go to the trail, but I was out about two-and-a-half hours, took more than 1,000 photos (!)–that’s a record even for a day, let alone for less than three hours–and never got beyond the pond.

Two great blue herons were down there, one of them maybe just 20 feet from me and in exquisite lighting. They can be quite shy, but they weren’t bothered at all by my presence, and one takes advantage of such chances, not knowing when (if ever) they will come again! There were also at least two green herons, but they were farther away and they’re smaller birds anyway, so I didn’t pay much attention to them, except that I got several shots when one of the green herons caught a frog. The great blue closest to me caught at least four things while I watched, though between its movement and getting behind grasses when it moved much, I only managed to get one of those “catches” (a fish) in focus. I also got some decently good shots when the near heron flew up and into a tree.

Since then I’ve been deleting photos and choosing the best 20%, from which I will narrow further. (I just moved all the good, sharp photos into a folder–the grass was blowing, and birds often turn their heads or otherwise move into a bad position just when you get a shot.) Anyway, spending a morning photographing wildlife, and then going through the photos, really is “work,” but mostly it’s pleasant work. And 30 years ago I would never have believed I could be that close to a heron for so long, and with a camera good enough to get good shots.

  5. We have a daughter who responds with crossed arms and stomped foot and a strong, “that’s not my name” whenever we try something different. We call her that sometimes.

  6. Me to Heidi, who is sticking close to me because she is scared of the thunderstorm:

“It’s okay, Heidi. Mommy makes everything better.

    I think.

    Or is that cheese?”

  7. Some interesting musical interludes lately: The drive back from OC today included Christmas music that somehow was triggered to play via bluetooth from my phone to the radio. The Nutcracker, The Messiah, Joy to the World’s wonderful line “far as the curse is found” — Christmas music is never out of place, not even while navigating traffic on a California freeway on a warm summer’s day.

Walking the dogs last night I heard the strains of Taps coming from the Air Force housing by the waterfront. I stopped on the corner to listen to it play out. It plays at 9 p.m. nightly.

Sometimes while working at home lately I’ve also heard Revelry and the Star Spangled Banner, played at 4:30 p.m.

  8. Today, here, it is July 31. But for this particular instance, I am going with the International Date line. Where daughter lives, where Jo lives, it is August. You may not fully comprehend just how much I have looked forward to this month, especially in regard with son. We have no say in his life, but full responsibility until his birthday. And then, the mantle of responsibility is all his.
So, it is August. I am celebrating August.

  9. Why, thank you, Cheryl. As you know, we are already celebrating here. August, 2019 is a very good month.

If you had an extra several minutes, you could of course go to the Idaho youth challenge academy site and go to their fb posts and find the video of the candidates eating their meal. Son shows up in the Scouts group, looking quite squared away and using the correct words in acclimation time so he won’t have to do pushups for incorrectly addressing Staff.

  10. It’s August for everybody now.
I think AJ means for us to continue on this because:
    1. It’s Thursday and he sleeps in on Thursday.
    2. It’s Elizabeth’s BD and they have other plans that don’t include us.

But Good morning everyone but Jo.
    Good evening Jo.’
On TV this morning, they are talking about who won the debate. I have it on mute so I don’t know what they’re saying. But yesterday it was about universal health care and open borders. I didn’t watch the debates, but if that’s so. I think Trump won.

  11. I can be tired at this time, so you can too.
Another busy day in kinder. They had computer lab on regular computers. The teacher had a game up with the cursor flashing at the top and told them to type in their names. How does a five year old know how to do that?? I think the teacher is learning. Some had used devices and tried touching the screen.
