  6. I love geese and there are tons of them around here in the spring and summer. It’s not unusual to see a family of them walking across a field. I mentioned last year seeing seven families in a field along the rail trail (and not having my phone to get a pic). Oh how I miss riding the trail during the winter! Come on, spring!

  10. My daughter took first semester medical school classes last fall as the finish for her Master’s degree. Yesterday over the phone she successfully diagnosed what my issue really is.

    The good news: it has NOT been my back.

    The weird news: it’s a tiny muscle in the buttocks that when inflamed rubs against the sciatic nerve. Corollary–what could have caused that?

    The bad news: it’s a few inches long and protected by bigger and stronger muscles and is very tricky to stretch to help ease.

    The good news: I found a couple exercises online that seemed to do the stretching. Standing up and walking are easy. Even sitting here in my computer chair is almost normal.

    The awful news: lying down exacerbates it all over again. What a miserable night!

    The good news: There’s always hope that today I’ll find the exact correct stretching exercise and that maybe taking the awful muscle relaxant med this afternoon when I’m done driving will do the trick.

    Getting old is a challenge and having stupid physical problems (remember the weird vertigo at Thanksgiving?) doesn’t help.

    But I find myself wondering, why now, why this? The only conclusion I’ve come up with is God didn’t want me in the gym for three weeks. Who knows why? But I’ve been obedient. Ha!

  11. Good brunch time, all. It had warmed up, but now feels seasonally cool. A sunny day always helps the spirits.

    I was asked to be on the New Directions team ballot at church. The vote will be Sunday. I said yes but that I am not available during tax season. I have never been on a ballot at church. Either chosen or unchosen is fine with me. May the ones who suit God’s purposes best be chosen.

  12. As for work, the person who had surgery last year will not be with us this year. The lady who turns 90 this year changed her mind and will once again be back as a part-time preparer. It will be a rough season. And another person who helps will do her work at home. Office help is getting down to me. As of yesterday, my brother left his retail job. He will be part-time preparer/helper.

Michelle, my mother gets trouble with sciatica on top of her other pain [I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but in addition to the inflammatory arthritis, she has a disease of the bones called Paget’s disease in her skull and hip (https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/334607-overview), where the bone is constantly being broken down and then remodeled into a weaker structure- it runs in her family, as her mother had it and her grandfather, who went from being six feet tall to about five feet tall due to the Paget’s in his spine]. Anyway, a chiropractor told her that either going up and down stairs or walking backwards for about twenty minutes would help stretch those gluteal muscles that compressed the sciatic nerve. She used to walk backwards around her dining room table, but now that her knees have become so destabilized by the arthritis, she isn’t very well able to do it anymore.

  16. Received the second house painting (external) estimate, almost $10,000.

    I had a feeling he’d be way too rich for my blood. 🙂 Real Estate Guy is still in a coughing spasm after I sent it to him, I’m quite sure.

    First guy was right around $5,000, much closer to what’s doable for me.

    Michelle, that sounds rather complicated to address, hope you can find something that helps and hope this will just be one of those things that ‘flares up’ every now and again and is not chronic.

  21. Crock pot cooking is easy Chas….I am making broccoli cheddar soup in the crock pot for dinner tonight….cut it up dump it in and let it do it’s thing 😊
    Hi Jo….hoping your internet rights itself…it is frustrating not to be able to connect….sometimes I feel as though I am spoiled with technology….remember when we had to make long distance phone calls (after 11 because the charges when down then)…or we would even have to wait for a letter in the mail!! ✉️

  22. NancyJ. I did make a crockpot stew last week. I did it the way we made Hunter’s Stew in the Scouts. Potatoes, Tomatoes and almost everything else. Cook it until it’s a big mess.
    But it’s really good. I added stew beef to the concoction.

  27. DJ – Oh yeah, I was crying – at the show and at the preview for the next one. I am guessing that Jack went back in to rescue Kate’s dog, and then didn’t make it out.

    This show would have me in tears anyway, but I think it moves me even more so in my current situation.

    I’m done with the homeless assignment, long day — I ran into one of our long-ago former photographers who now works for the LA Times, they’ve been through their own misery. At least we have a lot of folks we can commiserate with in journalism these days.

Jo, I’ve often thought about what a different world missionaries live in today than the ones my parents were when they went to the mission field 65-70 years ago, going by ship with the only communication home being telegrams and slow and expensive airmail. I can’t even imagine being that cut off from loved ones.

  31. Thanks, it has been off and on. When we have internet it is much faster than it was a year ago. I love living here, it is very beautiful and the work is meaningful. It is just harder when I can’t connect with family and friends. I supposed I got spoiled while I was home with the easy and fast internet.

  32. Jo, I am awake for a few minutes and thought of you. You are in a special place, and I can understand how frustrating it is when you desire to connect and can’t because of a variety of obstacles. I don’t have the same obstacles as you have, but I am so limited now in times to connect, and my devices need replacement or repair and I have not found time to do that, etc. Anyways, all that said to say that I am glad you are here talking to me tonight from way over there. I thought of you at the same minute you posted. That is the God connection.
