It’s Friday, so please remember to pray for Mumsee, Mike, and the Nestlings.
Anyone else?
Psalm 149
1 Praise the Lord.
Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.
2 Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King. 3 Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. 5 Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.
6 May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, 7 to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, 8 to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with shackles of iron, 9 to carry out the sentence written against them— this is the glory of all his faithful people.
Will someone please let me know what is going on with KBells. I have been wrapped up in my life, and that of my friend M for the last two months and think I may have missed some really important news about her. Reading the prayer requests last night made me think I didn’t know how she is doing now.
Talked to a neighbor the other night — he and his wife live half a block away in an old 1920s 4-plex, they have rented the bottom right unit for 18 years, nearly as long as I’ve lived in this neighborhood. He said their building was bought recently by a new owner who’s on the path to “remodel” and raise everyone’s rent. Neighbor said they pay $1200 which isn’t cheap but that the empty unit next to them that’s been redone will be listed for $1600 and the owner has been giving them a hard time about various things, including how much $ they’re paying extra to keep their little dog.
The tenant told me he got a letter from a doctor to say the dog was needed for ‘assistance’ (emotional) as the man has diabetes and his going through some medical procedures now on his foot that keeps him from working his regular job down at the cruise terminal (not a well-paying position at all). So hopefully that will close that issue for them.
So many people are struggling with our high rents in Southern California and moving is beyond difficult. The new owner offered him and his wife $2,000 to leave, but that would never get them into another place. They just want to stay put at this point (they’re probably in their 50s).
I know people struggle with rentals going up here, also, and we are way below what you have in California. That is one of the cons of renting. Sad for this tenant. Subsidized housing is more available. It is unsubsidized that is difficult to find for those who do not want to take advantage of the subsidized and yet have a difficult time paying the rent.
We do have rent control in LA and these people are under that, thankfully. I’m not sure how that works exactly, though rents can still be raised (but maybe only by so much?). Still, $12000-$1600 a month is a hefty amount for many/most households that are middle class or lower.
Kevin, I just saw your prayer request on yesterday’s prayer thread. It looks like Bill was a close friend, and I am sorry for your loss and that of his family.

Kim – I think the last update was that the cancer has spread to her liver, which I think you saw.

And if you’re a grad student . . . yikes, here’s another reason they’re in so much debt by the time they graduate. 😦
