  1. Good morning.
Update on my mom: She is continuing to improve. She walked 200 feet yesterday in physical therapy! They are planning to discharge her this Friday…..not sure if she’ll go home or to a long term skilled nursing facility.

  2. Hello, y’all! That was spoken with a Southern drawl, of course.

It is still cold here, but global warming will hit this afternoon to warm us up.

Have a great Tuesday. I hear a siren so I know someone is NOT having a great Tuesday 😦

  3. Good morning Ann and Janice and Aj and anyone else who might be looking.
Good night Jo. It’s after nine there. Almost time for bed.
I got a nice e-mail I would like to pass on. It’s called “remedy for today’s news” and is about people helping people. A barber giving homeless people haircuts, A guy missed his train while helping an old lady with her bags, etc.

  4. Morning Chas. Just got back from my Bible study/fellowship group. Lots of rain here. The totals say we are getting twice what we normally do in October. Praising God for my car so I don’t have to walk these muddy roads. School has covered, paved walkways. In a heavy rain even those can be covered with water and mud.

  5. Donna, from yesterday. Yes, for a brief time there were “Lady Lions” , but it didn’t work out. Now women can be lions same as men. We have no women in our club here, but we only have about 25 mostly old men. Hendersonville had 72 members when I left. About a third were women. They have had women presidents. They contribute a lot to the club.
    Lions do good things.

  6. While rambling around the internet, I ran across a Yahoo link, “12 Lies Evangelicals Believe” I didn’t look at all of them closely but the survey said 77% believed the first one. I don’t know how they define “evangelicals”. I suspect it is self identified . The survey was taken by “Lifeway Research”. Sounds like a SBC organization: The survey.’

11 Homosexual behavior is no longer a sin.
12 “Prosperity Gospel” (They went into long discussions about this which I didn’t read carefully. Seems the poor believe this more than the prosperous.)

I don’t believe any of this, BTW, as I suppose you guessed. But if the survey is reliable.=– As I said, it looks like a SBC survey,–we are in big trouble.

  7. Good Morning….that is a most beautiful photo…the swirling colors of the water seem almost unreal…great shot!
Off to catch up with a dear friend over breakfast…no rain in sight for us…this is a most unusual October!!

  8. If I were a pastor, I would closely inspect that survey for reliability, etc. and preach a series of sermons on it. I suspect our young people have been drugged by the popular media and lack of attention by their religious leaders.
I think there are extremes on both sides that need to be avoided. As I told you before, my dad was saved three times. He had a weakness for cigars and he would quit, but start again. He thought those cigars would send him to hell.

You read it one way, I read it mine. Paul and Peter have been outdated.
    Things are different now.

  11. Chas’s SBC like survey. There are a lot of people who think they are believers who think those things. They may be, I don’t know. However, my Bible tells me those are not what Jesus teaches.

Looking forward to Chas’s remedy on here.

Lions. Son served Lions burgers before the football game this past Saturday. The Seniors rented the Lions burger truck as a money making effort. The boys sold before the game, the girls sold during the game. That is because the boys were playing the game and the girls were not.

  12. Michelle, then I would encourage her to take melatonin and try to improve her sleep. Remember what daughter in law went through about eight years ago. She ended up in a psych ward for a few days as she was panicked that somebody was trying to kill her children or husband. The doc told her it was melatonin imbalance and she and I have been spreading the word at every opportunity. Nobody wants to endure what she and my son did.

  13. That sleep hormone is what helps us deal with all of those other stresses but it gets depleted when the care of a newborn interferes with sleep on a regular basis. Or too much night time computer time would probably do it. Or worrying about money, or grieving.

  14. All the service clubs took in women at around the same time, as I recall — in the 1990s sometime? I think the Elks were among the final holdouts in our area. One of my early jobs in newspapers, in the 1980s, was to compile what our paper called the ‘fraternal beat,’ the weekly listing of all those club meetings and activities.

Well, I have my teeth cleaning this morning, I almost canceled it but they’re getting so booked up these days that you can’t just put it off for a couple weeks, it usually means waiting 2-3 more months. So I’ll bite bullet (or floss) and go get it done. 😦

The hygienist I used to see there retired in the past couple years (I loved her) and I’m not overly fond of the new one. She’s friendly and chirpy enough, but tends to be lecture-y about flossing, very intense, focuses on what you’re not doing right rather than any improvements she’s seeing (even when I’ve been flossing daily). The fact that I floss *most* of the time and get in there every 6 months for the cleanings I feel puts me probably ahead of most population. 🙂 It’s never enough …

But I guess the other hygienist is even worse. 🙂

Oh well, good thing the appointment is in the morning I suppose, gets it behind me right away.

Doing a story today about a local guy who’s been a lifelong Cubs fan (he was born in Chicago) so his family and friends got together and raised enough money to send him off to see the world series.

On theology: There was a recent survey about what Americans believe that was rather eye opening, too (and it may be the same survey Chas is referring to). I know people who were raised in the church and consider themselves ‘saved’ or spiritual, even though they’ve not been to church (or read the Bible) in ages.

I’m not surprised by any of it — even many churches with and without crosses on the front of the buildings do not preach the gospel so popular misunderstandings abound.

  15. I got an e-mail with logically silly questions. One, thought not yet settled in the courts, says”

Churches are now required to officiate gay marriages.
When do we have one in a mosque?

I do wonder how they’re going to deal with that.

  16. Easier & faster teeth cleaning in many ways — for one, there’s a new hygienist I got, she’s from South America and I really liked her. No lectures, just some helpful tips. She said I had really nice teeth.

And she used this new thing, it’s an electronic gizmo that breaks up all the plaque first so the manual picking and scraping is much easier in a lot less time. And she used a temporary numbing gel around the gum line which also made things more comfortable.

Glad I didn’t cancel now, I was very tempted — now I don’t go back until May. I asked to have her again. 🙂

  17. But it’s free, right? 🙂

I am going to call the insurance person in my GPs office to see if she can give me some direction on our health insurance through work — the premiums actually went down, and preventative things are fully covered (I think), but everything else, including prescriptions, you pay out of pocket for until you hit the deductible. I don’t know what the means for the 3 prescriptions I’m on, but one (eye drops for dry eyes) is not available in a generic and I have a feeling it might cost a lot without an insurance break (with the break I have now it’s $30 a month, the other 2 are $10 each a month).

  18. DJ, I have found that sometimes the insurance price is higher than the cash price. The co-pay on BG’s thyroid medicine is $12 for a 30 day supply. If the pharmacist runs it without insurance I get 90 days for $10. It doesn’t make sense but it is true.

  19. QoD. How is it that two people who have spent their entire lives in public service end up with a net worth over $200 million?

Kim. It makes sense. When you pay cash, the pharmacist gets money. With insurance he has to deal with an insurance company which will eventually pay him.
It’s that simple. Imagine you are selling a house and a guy comes wanting to buy it.
He writes a check for it. So much for them, so much for you, deal closed.

  20. I just spoke with Karen and she is back home. I am so thankful. She has a much longer incision than Art had so she will need to be extra careful.

Art saw Dr. Murphy earlier. The incision drainage is okay by Dr. Murphy who said it is like the wound spitting out the dissolving internal sutures. Art will use hydrogen peroxide and a covering of gauze twice daily. Dr. Murphy has his arm in a sling with something wrong with His shoulder. He said all his patients had to be rescheduled. That is tough for a surgeon of His calibre.

  22. Donna, dental work isn’t covered by the provincial health insurance plan, at least not here – each province differs somewhat in what they choose to cover.

I did some necessary shopping on the weekend. In a clothing store which caters more to teenagers, the very young salesperson asked me, “Is there anything I can help you with, ma’am?” I suddenly felt very old.

  23. Donna,we joined the Walgreens prescription club. It was cheaper for my hubby’s metformin than when we had it on the insurance. It is like $78 without the Rx club, and $15 with it. We pay $20 a year for the membership and it is well worth it. We used to pay $20 for a copay with insurance.

  24. Dj, my dentist recommended getting one of those Sonicare brushes. I found one at Costco for a reasonable price. I waited until I got here to use it, then forgot it. Finally after a year and a half I got around to using it. It really takes away the plaque buildup. Amazing.

  25. Mumsee and Michelle, the 5htp I am taking has melatonin in it and it boosts the serotonin levels. It is making a difference for me. Also, it is over the counter, I got mine at Costco.

  28. By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers
A new classified Ministry of Defense (MoD) report circulating in the Kremlin today states that for the second time in two years, “advanced” Federation “electronic warfare defences” have crippled the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG-75)—and when Baltic Fleet “special forces elements” offered assistance to tow them back to their Polish port, the Americans refused to respond
According to this report, in April, 2014, the USS Donald Cook, while performing a mission in the Black Sea, substantially violated Federation “territorial integrity” causing President Putin to authorize an “electronic warfare defense” attack against it that was so devastating this top-line warship was left adrift—and once towed back to its Romanian port, its American sailors were so demoralized 27 of them filed immediate letters of resignation from the US Navy.

In March 2015 too, this report notes, Federation submarine naval forces attacked with their “advanced” electronic weapons the American aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) causing it to flee to the coast of Britain where it remained for weeks to the amazement of the public until it was repaired and able to get under sail again—and as we had told about in our report titled Terrified US Aircraft Carrier Flees From Russian Subs To UK Safety

I found this by Googling “USS Donald Cook”

  29. Thanks for all the insurance tips. I’ll still sign up for our dental and vision insurance through work, just don’t know yet about the medical (I qualify for Medicare so it depends on how that would compare). I called the insurance person in my GP’s office today, left a message for her to call, I’m thinking she can help!

I’ve used a Sonicare brush (on the dentist’s suggestion) for several years now, they are great, worth the high cost (although plaque still happens).

Long day, I was asked to do an obituary on a somewhat well-known (in aviation circles) pilot in our area who died today at the age of 94. Amazing story, but a whole lot to write about and try to catch up on since I’d just never heard of the guy before.

Then I hung out to listen to a live stream debate between the 2 county supervisor candidates in the race I’m covering, that ended around 8 p.m. Long day, but I wound up making up the dental time so I don’t have to claim that as sick pay.

Looks like the bathroom could launch very soon now …

Had to turn Carol down for a requested shopping (to the 99cent store) visit this Saturday. I just still have work to do in the house to prepare of all of this.

Got the bathroom ceiling light delivered today, it’s bigger than I thought it would be, but it
ll look nice — flush, bronze base with a frosted white glass shade.

One more box to add to the pile in the living room … It’s all definitely going to look even worse than this before it looks better.

  30. I also ran into a retired editor from our paper at the port the other day (he works part-time helping load and unload the cruise ships, journalists can never really “retire” 🙂 ) — anyway, he passed on the info of a medicare consultant he and his wife used who was a big help also.

I have time to sort it all out, although the sign-ups for the work insurance are in November so I kind of have to figure out that part of it pretty soon I guess.

Co-workers are scrambling, one rescheduled a foot surgery before the end of the year so he’ll get more coverage on this year’s plan — another co-worker was literally in tears, she’s in her early 50s, was diagnosed a few years back with diabetes, which requires a lot of doctor visits & meds. She doesn’t know what she’ll do with the new work plans that require so much out of pocket expenses …
