  2. Hi Chas. Good morning from Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital in Kerrville, TX. I’ve been up since 4:30 when they came to check my mom’s vitals….she had a rough night–lots of moaning–but is sleeping well now after a fentanyl shot a couple of hours ago. I’ve already been to Starbucks –they open at 5:30 and am waiting to speak with the case manager. My brother, the anaesthesiologist, wants a neuro-consult on her. He saw her have a TIA last time he was in town — a week or so before she fell…..

    Had quite the rollicking earthquake this afternoon. Out in a remote area of PNG, it was a 6.9
    Lasted quite a while and I remembered the article I read about Japan and the fellow said that the longer they lasted the greater the magnitude.
    Just feeling the house shake here though.

  5. Ann, did she refuse to go to the doctor after her TIA? I was in the room when my father-in-law had one, one Father’s Day I think. He was talking but he wasn’t making sense, and my mother-in-law calmly patted his knee and said, “We’re going to get you to the doctor.”

    If anyone wants a good movie to set the atmosphere for Halloween, we just watched the three part series of Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None. Quite a fascinating movie and book which is much darker than her other works, but is probably her bestselling work of all time. I highly recommend it, but not for the whole family.

  8. Ann, I am glad you are there with your mom. I know it’s tiresome being at the hospital, but it means a lot to people to have someone outside of staff to help with their little needs. I am glad she is able to get in some good sleep with help from that med. Prayers for you all.

    Love that squirrel — he escaped the monster hanging in tree.

    I’ll have you know we actually had RAIN — not heavy, but stead, all night long!!!! We’re ecstatic. What joy for us in drought-land. The little free tree the city gave me was looking pretty withered in the past couple days (the city is supposed to care for and water them, but I headed out there a couple times with a bucket of water — captured from my leaky tub drain — to try to revive it. I’m sure the rain will help it immensely).

    Most conservatives, I being one, believe that not only will God bring Israel to their promised land, which He has done, but will protect and deliver them. The Bible is full of it.

    Woe to the nation that tries to change that.
    There is a theory among some called “Replacement theory”. That is, “all of the promises god made to Israel accrue to the church.” I don’t believe that.

  14. The new kitty has a name. It’s Gemma. 🙂

    She has some unusual habits. She has decided that Cheryl is her mommy now, and pretty much lives on top of my wife, in differing locations. Funny stuff. 🙂

    And I have some pics too.

    She is now interacting with the bigger cats. Nosey keeps coming over to Cheryl for some attention, and then is shocked when Gemma moves and she notices her. Then she hisses and leaves, all indignant like.

    Mouse has a lamp on a table that she likes to sit under. This morning Gemma noticed her, flew across the couch unto the table…. and got whacked. Mouse bounced her head off the tissue box. And then hissed. But mostly Mouse just sits and watches the little one, as if she still isn’t sure about her. Or she’s plotting her demise. It’s one of those…. 😆

  16. Our camp has a leadership and discipleship program where the full time staff and the senior staff meet weekly for about 45 minutes with a younger staff member in a One-on-One program. This summer I was given 2 young ladies to meet with. We are given questions that we can ask our one-on-one to help guide us through the summer, but I really struggled with using those questions as a lot of them were actually irrelevant to the girls I was mentoring. I often felt rushed to get out of the office for our scheduled times and almost forgot to pray for and with them before rushing back to my office work several times.

    All that to ask: does anyone here know of or recommend a good study program on how to be a good mentor/discipler? One that I could either do online or a book? I’m thinking Michelle might already have a blog about this… I’ve gone to some web sites and found some useful information but I’m not sure how to prep myself and get into the right mindset for God to work. I know He can use even me but I need to do my part and I want to be more prepared for the coming summer.

    Lots of transformer explosions throughout LA last night due to the rain (dry palm and other debris sets those off, especially the first rain when everything is so dry), so many people are without power today.

  19. We watched ” I am Not a Serial Killer”, which was on Netflix. We don’t have that, but my daughter does. I was wanting to see this movie, because it was filmed locally and we know some of the extras. The city was made to look very depressed and dark. It was fun to watch for that reason, but I was also pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was. It is quite dark. Christopher Lloyd was one of the actors.

  21. It’s a holdover, Linda. When I was working, I got up every morning at 5:20. On the beltway by 6:00. In Saturday and Sunday I slept in. Not s much on Sunday, we attended the 8:30 service, but still not so early.
    Monday was always a shock.

  22. Today is the day that all of the new folks fly up from the POC (Pacific Orientation Course) in Madang. It is about a half hour flight, but they go from the hot and humid coast to the cool highlands at 5,000feet. I will have someone next door to me, we use the same outside door to a small entryway. The funny part is that there is really no wall between our bedrooms, just cupboards. So when you open a cupboard drawer it sounds like someone is in your room. There is also a small crack between the cupboards and the closet where I can see her light if I look just right.
    I will also be getting a new student, perhaps Thursday or Friday.
    Then this week I am doing the book order, Scholastic Australia, with a friend for the whole school. I do all of the reconciling of the order and figuring out the numbers. Last year it involved several thousands of dollars and lots of work.

    It’s shaping up to be a productive week which is good — I already have stories lined up for every day. That makes the editors happy.

    The bathroom (cute) hexagon floor tile was delivered today, found it in 5 boxes stacked on the front porch when I got home tonight at 7 p,m. It’s now stacked on the patio with the boxes of the tub-shower tile and other items.

    The bathroom double-hung window I ordered Saturday may end up being the final (and potentially lengthy) delay, but oh well. Hoping the bathroom is finished by Thanksgiving, at least, but who knows.

    Once the holiday season hits, I’ll probably have to just hold off on the other jobs (painting, mainly) until next year.

    I’m watching Usual Suspects tonight, a movie I’ve missed somehow — it was mostly filmed in our port town and so I’ve wanted to see it for a while now, just never got to it. It’s on one of the cable channels.
