  1. AJ posted an interesting item yesterday about the Trump/Ryan dispute leading to a breakup of the Republican Party. If that happens, Trump gets his primary voters: the lower educated, the lower income, the irreligious, the lower class. Ryan gets the college educated, the church-goers, the upper class. It is all in Charles Murray’s book: Coming Apart.

If you take social issues out of the equation (and that is quickly happening), the parties could realign. One of the magazines had an article about this recently. The two new parties would realign along income/class lines. One party would essentially be made up of the 47% who pay income taxes. The other would be made up of the rest of the people. Before you conclude which party would be which, please note that Trump is killing Hillary among whites without a college degree, but is struggling among the college educated.

  3. AJ, Do you understand that Trump’s language is not the biggest problem in the tape? He bragged about committing multiple sexual assaults. Sexual assaults are actions, not words. Trump supporters seem to recognize sexual assaults as crimes when committed by Bill Clinton and covered up by Hillary. However, they will not admit that Trump admitted, even bragged, that he committed the same crime on multiple occasions.

  4. Ricky,

I’m a church goer, my wife is college educated, and neither of us would vote for Ryan. I know plenty of college educated, religious voters who are gonna vote Trump. They feel the same about Ryan and the establishment, and how they use us for votes but do nothing for us once elected. People are sick of Republican leaders like Ryan. That’s why Trump won the primaries.

As for Ryan, he’s Obama’s best friend and has stood by while Obama’s agenda has been shoved down our throats. He does nothing for the average person, only his big money, open borders handlers. Those “upper-class” and their money are the only ones he cares about.

As for the “religious”, he, like most of the establishment wing of the party only use religious voters for their own gain, yet do nothing to address our concerns once elected. Name a couple of things he has done for those voters. What protections has he fought for for them? What legislation has he pushed thru to help/benefit us? He, like most, is all talk but doesn’t deliver. He and those like him are what has allowed Trump to rise.

    He’s a fraud.

“A Democratic official was caught on camera admitting his knowledge of voter fraud in New York City, according to a video released Tuesday.

Alan Schulkin, serves as a Democratic Election Commissioner in New York City, the New York Post reported. James O’Keefe’s group Project Veritas released the video early Tuesday morning, saying it was shot at a United Federation of Teachers holiday party in December 2015.

Schulkin was caught saying, “people don’t realize certain neighborhoods in particular, they bus people around to vote.” When asked for clarification, Schulkin says, “They put them in a bus and go from poll site to poll site.”
The woman in the video asks “Oh like minority neighborhoods, like black neighborhoods and Hispanic neighborhoods?” to which Schulkin nods and responds “Yeah. And Chinese too.”

When asked why minority voters are being bussed around, Schulkin responded, “For votes. More votes for themselves. They’re all running for office.””

  6. Read Coming Apart. Review who voted for Trump in the primaries. Trumpkins are largely lower class Republicans and Democrats. The lower class increasingly don’t work, don’t go to church, have kids out of wedlock and commit crimes. That group isn’t going to go with Ryan.

Educated conservative young people understand that the US is heading for a fiscal cliff. Chas has talked about this. I have spoken to a number of these young people who are outraged that neither the buffoon Trump nor Clinton has even mentioned this in two debates.

Among our national leaders, it was Ryan who:
    1. Proposed a detailed plan leading to a balanced budget.
    2. Proposed a Medicare Reform plan to plug the biggest black hole in the budget.

Trump and the ignorant Trumpkins want protectionism as favored by Bernie Sanders and practiced by Hugo Chavez. Ryan and the intelligent wing of the Republican Party realize that would lead to economic ruin.

We get it, you hate the man, it’s obvious. But do you have evidence that proves Trump has done what you allege? There are accusations, all in lawsuits looking for money, but no charges have ever been filed against him. While hanging with a scumbag like Epstein is concerning, it’s not proof he’s done anything wrong. Accusations are not evidence.

  9. In the old days, conservatives read books, newspapers and magazines like National Review and Human Events. These sources contained detailed articles about important subjects such as the budget, foreign policy, and domestic programs. Those conservatives nominated Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Today, too many people get their news from FoxNews (which was created by the Trumpkin and sexual predator Roger Ailes) or a similar site. They know the name of a girl killed by an illegal alien, but little about spending, healthcare, foreign policy or tax policy. It’s not going to get better.

Do you mean this budget, the one even conservatives opposed?

    http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/03/15/Paul-Ryan-Taking-30-Billion-Gamble-GOP-s-Budget

“House Speaker Paul Ryan is making what might be the biggest gamble of his career to date, forging ahead with a fiscal year 2017 budget even though fiscal conservatives say they will oppose it.

Ryan’s blueprint, which the House Budget Committee could begin marking up as soon as Wednesday, sticks to the $1.07 trillion agreed upon spending level in the two-year budget deal struck by the White House and congressional leaders. He’s ignoring demands from the far-right House Freedom Caucus to shave $30 billion off the topline.”

“Ryan and House Budget Chair Tom Price (R-GA) previously floated budget proposals to the 40-odd Freedom Caucus members at least twice. The plans were rejected. By moving forward with a budget now, Ryan is hoping enough Republicans stay on the reservation to get it approved and not test his previous claims that he’s okay with introducing legislation that dies on the House floor.”

“In a sign of how tough the road ahead is for Ryan, a leading conservative think-tank panned the budget proposal. “This budget is not a serious effort to tackle our mounting debt caused by wasteful spending,” Paul Winfree, director of the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation, said in a statement. “Once again Congress promises future spending cuts in return for higher spending today. That’s no longer acceptable. The future cuts never come.””

Ryan’s plans always involves one constant. Hide the numbers.

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/06/paul-ryan-plan-for-everything-hide-the-numbers.html

“Before Donald Trump started baying at the moon, and before Ted Cruz launched pointless shutdowns, the state of the art in Republican ideological extremism was Paul Ryan and his Ayn Rand–inspired vision of government. Because Ryan is a practical extremist rather than an impractical one, and because he avoids displays of racism and misogyny, he has been cast as his party’s sensible alternative. Ryan has built his party’s agenda, which Republicans have rolled out in stages, achieving mostly adulatory coverage. USA Today’s lead earlier this month struck the typical tone: “Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday started rolling out policy prescriptions that he says are part of a positive Republican vision that will show Americans what the party is for, rather than focusing on what it’s against.” But all Ryan’s agenda would actually do is radically redistribute income upward on a historic and unprecedented scale.

House Republicans have released their plan in stages, and today they release their proposal to slash taxes. It contains all of the traditional elements of supply-side economics: The top tax rate would be cut to 33 percent, lower than it was under George W. Bush; taxes on capital gains and dividends would fall; and tax on estates — which currently applies only to inheritances of more than $10 million per couple — would be abolished. However, it is impossible to quantify just how enormous of a boon this would provide to the most affluent. Republicans have omitted enough key details to prevent a full measurement of the proposal’s effects. “The plan isn’t detailed enough for a complete nonpartisan congressional analysis to verify the impact on the budget and on households,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The same holds true of the House Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. As with taxes, the overall direction of the policy is clear: It would strip away insurance from tens of millions of people, impose higher costs on people who are poor and sick, and provide lower costs for the affluent and healthy. But just how much cannot be calculated, because Republicans have, again, omitted the key details. “House Republicans have estimates from the Congressional Budget Office on how their health care plan, released Wednesday, would affect the federal deficit,” reports Caitlin Owens. “They’re just not releasing them.” Hard numbers, once again, would reveal all of the painful trade-offs in the Republican plan.”

More on the myth that is Paul Ryan.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-myth-of-paul-ryan/2016/07/05/06d0fbb6-4251-11e6-8856-f26de2537a9d_story.html?utm_term=.0213c1e14494

“You know it’s a peculiar election year when Mitt Romney and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) can agree that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is a “fraud.” But that label shouldn’t be reserved for Donald Trump alone. It’s also an apt description of the man Trump supplanted as the de facto leader of the party — Romney’s running mate in 2012, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis).

Indeed, years before Trump sold Republican primary voters on the myth of his own great success, Ryan sold a credulous Washington establishment on the notion that he was a serious thinker overflowing with political courage — a policy wonk uniquely willing to tackle tough issues such as entitlement reform. In the past month, however, it has become more obvious than ever that Ryan’s reputation is worth about as much as a degree from Trump University.”

“Ryan put forward a health-care proposal that was hyped as the long-awaited Republican alternative to the Affordable Care Act, but the “plan” consisted largely of well-worn talking points instead of actual legislation. In a withering editorial titled “Paul Ryan’s flimsy health plan,” The Post’s editorial board described it as “less detailed in a variety of crucial ways than previous conservative health reform proposals,” while adding, “The outlines that the speaker did provide suggest that it would be hard on the poor, old and sick.”

He also released a tax reform proposal that, according to the Wall Street Journal, “isn’t detailed enough for a complete nonpartisan congressional analysis to verify the effect on the budget and on households.” The limited details he did provide, however, do not paint a pretty picture. It’s not just that Ryan proposes to slash rates for the rich and corporations. He also wants to create a new loophole for “pass-through” income, which is a feature of Trump’s proposal and the disastrous plan implemented by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) that has wrecked his state’s finances.

And perhaps most significantly, given his disavowal of his past “makers and takers” rhetoric, Ryan introduced an “anti-poverty” plan that would severely weaken the safety net for those living in poverty. The plan, according to Politico, is mostly “repackaged GOP proposals,” including cuts to unemployment assistance, Head Start and federal Pell Grants. With Ryan’s blue-collar home town of Janesville already suffering the consequences of corporate trade deals and other Ryan-backed economic policies that have eviscerated the city’s manufacturing base, TalkPoverty editor Greg Kaufmann writes that Ryan’s latest proposal demonstrates “his enduring disconnect from the people struggling in his own district and across America.””

  17. And I’d be skewered in many circles for even suggesting this, but young, attractive women who are seeking the limelight in a career in entertainment are too often willing participants in mens’ bad and idiotic behavior. They wield a lot of power over men (and they know it).

Men are still responsible for behaving morally and not being jerks. But women have also been known to use their sexuality (and thus power over men, especially older men) for their own benefit, as well. They are often flattered that someone so rich and famous takes a liking to them and calculate that they, also, may get something out of the pact.

Often these dalliances are seen in a far different light years later — are the women victims? I’d say yes, even if they were participating in the sin for their own gain somehow (fame, money, advancement, whatever). But these incidents weren’t always as black and white then as they may seem years later in a clearer light.

  18. And I’m not suggesting that’s somehow always the case — women are often cowed by rich and famous men (look at the sad tales of Bill Cosby) and are afraid to resist or object or press charges later, they just fade way and try to forget it (which I’m sure they never can).

So this is Trump’s defense to the charge of being a sexual predator:

It is true Trump claimed on tape to be a sexual predator and that claim fits with everything we know about him including allegations in lawsuits and a growing number of press reports.

However, we all know that Trump is an even bigger liar than he is a sexual deviant. Therefore, it is barely possible that the specifics details of his confession may be false.

Dj, Maybe the Trumpkins should put out a press release to that effect to clarify things.

I suppose I’d always caution on presuming we *know* everything about a person’s motives and character. Trump’s character, based on what we know, appears to be poor. The Clintons, also, by their words and actions, aren’t admirable characters.

I’m just saying we can’t go further than what we actually know publicly about some of these people. We can take a good guess (which may or may not be accurate). But as Christians we really shouldn’t go beyond that.

If his talk reflects reality, I suppose I’m (mildly) surprised that we haven’t heard rape or assault claims from women surfacing since he’s been running for president over the past year. I don’t know what that means. It could mean his sexual bark is louder than the reality.

I decided after the initial time when attorneys were hired that I would handle it myself. I found a way to deal with it using humor and and (the word I want to use begins with ball but is rather vulgar).
Once I told a co-worker he was making me uncomfortable and he apologized saying he had stepped over the line. I deserve some responsibility in that because I had joked around with him about other things. Once Guy said something and I told him “Ewwwww, you know you are like a brother to me and that is just a picture I will never be able to erase from my mind”. (He wasn’t making a pass at me, he said something else inappropriate about someone else). Once I had to tell him that a prospective buyer had crossed the line with me. He hit the ceiling, wanted the guys number and told me not to answer any more calls from him. A few minutes later he called me back to let me know the guy bought a hunting camp instead of a condo at the beach.

I have never been in a position of losing my job if I spoke up. I don’t know that since Anita Hill any woman has been in that position, so if you let a man get away with doing or saying the things Trump has done or said then you ….I don’t want to say bear some of the responsibility…but you should have said or done something.

Many years ago on WMB I wrote that very few men were allowed to hug me. Since then I have met at least 2 of the men from this blog and a couple or more of the husbands. I am now a hugger. I mean nothing by it and it is actually a sign of recovery and becoming “comfortable in my skin”. I trust that none of you or your husbands were copping a cheap thrill by hugging me back 😉

I have even laughed that at my advanced age it has been so long since I was sexually harassed that it would be flattery now…just like having to show ID to buy alcohol.
So if any of you are being sexually harassed email me and I will give you some KBells worthy come backs to put them in their place.

Granted you have to be under a certain age to inform a man that “if I want to go out with an OLD man, I can go out with my Daddy and not have to put out” but feel free to share it with your daughters. I am sure their fathers will appreciate it.

  28. Thirty years ago, I was working at a fast-food restaurant that was one of the test markets for two-window drive-thrus, and a man came to the first window showing parts of himself I didn’t want to see. I alerted the management before he went to the second window, and so it was a male manager who gave him his order. Later I talked to a female boss about what had happened, and while we were talking a male manager came over, and she told him, and both of them laughed about something related to what had happened. As a discreet Christian teenager, it was all extremely awkward, and I wished I hadn’t said anything to her. (I was glad I had the courage to alert management initially, because I didn’t want another girl in the other booth having to deal with it.)

I have no idea whether Trump actually did the actions he bragged about, but it wouldn’t be terribly shocking if he simply got away with it. He would only go after the very young and the very pretty, and it’s likely some of them were dressed in a way that emphasized their sexuality, and all in all some might have been flattered, some dismayed but they told themselves or other people told them that they asked for it, and anyone who might have wanted to protest would have been told he’s rich and famous and you’ll embarrass yourself more if you go after him. At 18 I wasn’t his type–but if he had abused me, no way I would have wanted the publicity or the embarrassment of saying anything. And who would be believed anyway–the young naive girl or the multi-millionaire she accuses?

Don’t be shocked in this election if the combination of a woman candidate on one hand and a truly caddish man on the other combine to make this an extremely lopsided vote among women. Women voting for Donald would be like black people voting for admitted KKK members. I doubt many will be willing to do it, completely apart from other matters that make him an unfit candidate.

  29. The last line of the link as to why Christians should not vote for Donald Trump…”it’s not time for Donald Trump”….I would ask “so it’s time for Hillary Clinton”??? Like it or not it is a race between 2 candidates….one of them will be president….my vote will be for Mike Pence…yes, he is connected to Trump…but he still gets my vote…..

  30. Given the evangelical support for Trump, I think we need to cleanse the palate of our minds and review what we’re actually contemplating. Listen again to the Trump tapes. We answer to God about who we vote for. We honestly think he expects us to *support and ally ourselves* with such a man as Trump? I just can’t figure it. I’m convinced it’s a boiling from scenario; otherwise, we’d recoil at the thought. We don’t HAVE TO vote for president. There are other ways to be politically and socially active.

  31. A 30 year old allegation? Really? And an unwanted kiss on the mouth from a decade ago. That’s the best they got?

Again, why now and not 30 or 10 years ago?

And I don’t buy the too scared to speak up line either. So we are to believe that she was too afraid 30 yrs. ago to speak up when he was a nobody, but she’s not now when he’s even more powerful and intimidating? Not really buyin’ it.

And Gloria Allred is a lying publicity hound who makes unfounded accusations and files bogus suits all the time looking for payoffs Her word is as useless as Clinton’s. And as a Democrat, she’s pulled this stuff on Republican presidential candidate before. Does Herman Cain ring a bell? She’s also the one who attempted to drag Romney thru the mud for his testimony in a divorce case.

If there’s a famous man and money to be had, she’s all over it. Even without money she’ll involve her self if it fits her “sexual harassment is everywhere!” agenda.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-07-19/why-they-all-want-gloria-allred

“She’s been involved in many serious civil rights cases, such as the 2004 lawsuit that led to the California Supreme Court ruling allowing same-sex couples to marry. But Allred is more commonly associated with her tabloid cases. She represented Sharon Bialek, the big-boned blonde who publicly accused Herman Cain of sexual harassment and helped put an end to his presidential campaign; at least two alleged Tiger Woods mistresses, whose revelations helped push the golf great into a two-year professional slump; and actress Jodie Fisher, whose accusations of sexual harassment against Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd led to his swift and undignified departure from the company and a confidential settlement. Allred can be counted on to surface even in instances where there’s no obvious legal issue at play, simply because someone in the news wants to “speak out”—one of Allred’s favorite terms—and a dozen media outlets want to listen. In almost every situation, the pressure Allred brings to bear is the same: She has the power to summon the television satellite trucks.

One executive who worked on the opposing side of one of Allred’s cases says that he marvels at her business model. What’s most effective about it, says the executive, who did not wish to be identified because it could jeopardize future cases, is that boards of directors, executives, and celebrities will pay whatever it takes to make her go away. Even those sympathetic to Allred’s larger fight for equal rights find her polarizing: “She’s such a publicity hound, and people don’t think of her as a real working lawyer,” says Deborah Kelly, a partner with the law firm Dickstein Shapiro who specializes in employment law and who debated Allred over one of her cases. “I think it makes people cynical and trivializes the plight of the real victims of discrimination.””

  32. Aj and others;

There are at least three accusations of rape or sexual assault prior to this election; his ex wife, a former business associate and a 13 old girl. As the spotlight increases more will come forward in the same manner as the dam broke when one person came forward on Bill Cosby. In addition, the Howard Stern tapes reveal Trump bragging he purposely walked around backstage when contestants were changing; essentially he admitted to voyeurism. Now past contestants are being interviewed and are confirming this interview — going as far as to say he was “the creepy uncle”. The voyeurism alone is enough to get him on the sex offenders registry in some jurisdictions. Not mere words — but an admission of past assaults and voyeurism.

The truly depressing news for me is two maps published by Nate Silver — one showing an overwhelming victory for Clinton if only women voted (like Reagan over Mondale) and the other showing a somewhat smaller landslide for Trump if only men voted. Trump supporters respond with the hashtag #repealthe19th. If I believed in collective responsibility I would be embarrassed to be a male.

  33. An ordinary person would mumble an apology, resign and go quietly into the night. The fact he hasn’t demonstrates his narcissism and idea of entitlement. Not someone with the right temperament etc to be a leader.

  34. It is truly unbelievable. HRW and Roscuro, I am curious what you think would happen if a candidate for Prime Minister of Canada had said and done the things Trump has said and done. Are we further down the road to Gomorrah than you are?

  35. Ricky,

    From your link….

“The woman’s original lawsuit, which she filed without a lawyer, was tossed by a judge in California last May.

Her new lawyer, Thomas Meagher, has said the dismissal was because she cited laws that didn’t apply to the case.

Alan Garten, general counsel for Trump, doubled down his position the lawsuit is flimsy — and politically motivated.

“These are allegations that are completely unfounded but are alleged to have occurred more than 20 years ago by someone who refuses to give their name,” Garten told the Daily News.”

It seems like yet another rehashing of baseless claims for political benefit. Most of what I’ve read seems to be much the same. But with so many coming out, who knows. We’ll see. But you can bet the press would much rather give face time and print to any women who wants to tell a story, as long as Trump is the villain. That way they conveniently don’t have to talk about Hillary’s many scandals. They’ve gone full on National Inquirer with this, that’s for sure.

  36. It’s the culture.

Personally, it’s been kind of refreshing to have bowed out of this race a while ago. So I’m watching from the sidelines with sadness but also fascination (sorry, can’t help it, it’s the political science/journalism major in me that’s still very much alive and well).

  37. I decided months ago I would vote for neither Hillary or Trump. After Trump had his post-RNC meltdown, I really thought he was more dangerous than her. However, I started to “root” for him as he closed the gap in September after Kellyanne the Trump-whisperer was hired as campaign manager. She tamed his worst behavior. I would look at 538 every morning and he would have inched closer. I wanted him to win because I figured the two were really similar and I wanted all the Trumpkins to see him turn out to be as bad or worse (my prediction) than Obama.

Then he had that horrible unprepared first debate and 7 days fighting with Miss Universe and then the unbelievable tape! Last Friday night I knew he was mortally wounded. But poor Paul Ryan and others must be careful. Trump is still dangerous as he thrashes around like a dying Godzilla.

  38. I don’t think it has anything to do with Gomorrah (some would say we our further down that road). Our parliamentary party system makes it difficult for an outsider to obtain power. And our lack of nationalism makes it difficult for a right wing populist to win enough votes — Harper and Conservatives did try to use nationalism, nativism and anti-immigrant sentiment but it made things worse for them electorally.

  39. HRW,

“An ordinary person would mumble an apology, resign and go quietly into the night.”

Sure, just like Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, any male Kennedy, and every Democrat ever tied, however weakly, to a sex scandal, right?

Oh wait, that’s right, when it’s a Dem that never happens……….. not ever.

    Talk about a double standard.

And yes, I’d take Trump over the socialist boy wonder you Canadians fell for too. 🙂

  40. By my count it did take 3 wooden stakes to the heart to rid us of Weiner.

The Double Standard has always been there. In the 1980s Republican Congressmen molested girl pages and were defeated in primaries. Democrat Congressman molested boy pages and were returned to Congress time after time.

It is difficult to compare Weiner and Trump. Weiner was like a 100 yard dash man. He only had one event: obscene texting or tweeting. Trump is a decathlete of slime: molesting, ogling, cursing, racist attacks, demagoguery, gross ignorance, adultery, pimping his mistress to Playboy, running a strip club in a casino, and sexually comparing a spouse and mistress in the press.

  41. I can’t imagine either Trudeau or Harper saying anything similar to Trump. However, the late Rob Ford (a right wing populist similar to Trump) did say similar things, was accused of groping women, was an alcoholic and did smoke crack — he refused to resign as mayor of Toronto but the city council almost unanimously (Conservatives, Liberals, and socialists) agreed to strip him of any power and put the deputy mayor in charge. He remained as a figure head until he resign due to cancer. His brother ran as mayor in the next election but lost badly.

Other examples: A senator was suspended after being charged with domestic assault. A cabinet minister resigned after being caught in a German strip joint instead of a NATO meeting. Another cabinet minister resigned after he left papers at his girlfriends place who was a known associate of Hells Angels. Generally there’s a low tolerance for this type of behaviour, especially domestic abuse, assault etc,

AJ — Trudeau is a boy wonder but he’s no socialist, he’s a liberal– I didn’t vote for him and I always vote socialist. In my city he’s considered too conservative.

I think the Democrats disowned Weiner after the second incident but the third one put him away. I do think any political party shouldn’t play the “well the other side did this” game. It lowers the bar and lacks principle. And Ricky is right, Trump is miles above (or more accurately below) Weiner.
