Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2016-Week 2

It’s week 2 in college football, so most of the top teams are playing “pushovers” (i.e.- smaller schools) this week, like Nevada at Notre Dame or Nichols State at Georgia. The small colleges do that knowing they are going to lose, but it gains them revenue. So the picks this week are mostly games of relative equals. We’ll start with the military schools and go from there. A few cross-state rivals play this week, mainly because they are not in the same conferences, so don’t play each other at the end of the season.

Kbells won it last week, so she chose the tie breaker game. Get your predictions in by 12:00 Noon Eastern Daylight Time (that’s 11:00 am Central, 10:00 am Mountain Time and 9:00 am Pacific). Those overseas adjust for your time zone.

1. Georgia State @ Air Force: Can Georgia Southern survive the high altitude in Colorado?

2. UConn @  Navy: Huskies and Midshipmen. Can the dogs sink them?

3. Rice @  Army: Owls and Knights. Interesting. A nocturnal bird against a team with the word “night” in its name.

4. Wake Forest @  Duke: Demon Deacons vs Blue Devils. Is the winner the greater of two evils?

5. Iowa State @   Iowa: Cyclones and Hawkeyes. Have you heard about the prof at Iowa that thinks the mascot is too agressive? Yeah, Iowa City is the Liberal capitol of the state.

6. BYU @  Utah: Can the Cougars go 2-0 against the PAC-12?

7. Washington State @  Boise State: I know what one of you is going to say, so I’ll leave it to her.

8. Penn State @  Pittsburgh: A cat fight in the city of steel.

9. Maine @  Toledo: Just because I don’t think I have ever put in a game with Maine in it.

10. Tie Breaker–  NC State @  Eastern Carolina: It was kbells’ to choose, but you choose the winner and the final score.

  1. Chas,

So East Carolina isn’t gonna score at all? 🙂

And you skipped the Navy game. You might wanna re-post your picks, then I’ll delete the first one.

  4. Well, AJ, and here I thought it was my old email provider that blocked the images. Now no one can see the Purple Pirates’ logo that kbells like so much. So here it is, for those who care: http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/teamlogos/ncaa/500/151.png&h=150&w=150

    And here are my picks-
Air Force: I grew up one mile from the entrance to an air force base
Navy: Anchors aweigh! Huskies are good with sleds, not ships.
    Army: No reason.
    Duke: Same.
Iowa: Hawkeyes usually win this one, especially at home.
Utah: Utes can bet on it.
    Boise State: Go Boise.
    Penn State: Lions beat Panthers.
    Maine: Just because.
Eastern Carolina 35-27: They are better than you think.

  6. So the only way I can win is if Ibutnotof and I tie for first and East Carolina wins. Oops. That was my only emotional pick. Did I mention I like purple pirates? Hubby worked a couple of East Carolina games and brought back some fun SWAG.

  7. 62/28
That’s what the computer says was the score. I saw about five minutes of the game. Took half an hour to see it.
Louisville had 21 points before Syracuse had a first down. Then Syracuse scored on a bomb of it’s own. Then Louisville scored again. 28/7 and only about five minutes off the game clock.
The touchdowns were all long passes downfield.
    I went to bed.

  8. Football is a stupid sport. Just a bunch of huge guys bumping into each other and trying to grab a silly looking ball.
Cincinnati beat Purdue and Mississippi State beat South Carolina, BTW.

  9. Unofficially? Looks like kbells outsmarted me and several others…sooner or later East Carolina will fall to an ACC team again! Not sure but it looks like Mumsee was in second?

  10. You’re correct, IBNO. Mumsee and kbells tied with 9 correct each, but kbells was only 4 off on the tie breaker, whereas mumsee was 21. You know it was a tough week when getting 7 correct is below average (7.3 correct).

The results (number of us who got it right):
Air Force 48 Georgia State 14 (all 11)
    Navy 28 UConn 24 (10)
    Army 31 Rice 14 (10)
    Wake Forest 24 Duke 14 (4)
    Iowa 42 Iowa State 3 (11)
    Utah 20 BYU 19 (6)
    Boise State 31 Washington State 28 (10)
    Pittsburgh 42 Penn State 39 (7)
    Toledo 45 Maine 3 (7)
Tie Breaker– Eastern Carolina 33 NC State 30 (4)

    Our results:
    kbells, mumsee 9
    Travis, Tychicus & IBNO 8
    Janice, Ricky, Kim, me 7
    AJ 6
    Chas 4

So, kbells, Congratulations on another spectacular win. What’ll it be next week for the tie breaker?
