  1. Good morning everyone.

Do any of the rest of you get your spam filter loaded with posts form “Dr. Oz fat filter” and from “Dr. Whittaker” and some others?

I have to clean it out several times a day.
In addition to the Asian and Russian women who want to meet me.

  3. Another busy day ahead but progress is being made and that is a good thing. Soon the raised beds will be ready for planting of summer things and that will be fun. Spinach and kale are about done for now. Cabbage and carrots are doing well. Tomatoes and strawberries, blackberries are flowering, raspberries and blueberries are ripening. It is so fun to watch and see how God has made such a variety of edibles.

  4. Bunny!

I tried to sleep in since tonight will be such a long one for me (election night shift that’ll go until at least 1 a.m.). But no luck, I was awake at 6 and now I’m “up.” Sorta.

So I have two races I have to cover results for tonight, a state senate seat and the LA County board of supes seat in our area. The latter will probably involve calls to the winner(s) (presuming it’ll be a runoff between the most prominent two candidates). When we get in we try to pre-write the stories with any background that should go in, putting the framework (with blanks for the results) in place so when results start rolling in and we’re under pressure to post asap online we can be as fast as possible.

Election night shifts are typically long hours of waiting with not a lot to do followed by a whirlwind of pressure. And when you get home in the wee hours you can never just “go to bed” right away.

Wednesday is miserable, trying to work on just a few hours of sleep.

  5. And I thought–“Gee, I went to the Smokies and all I saw was bears!”

Jammed my little toe against a box yesterday and despite being iced for a long time immediately afterwards, it throbbed all night. I decided dancing for an hour probably wasn’t a good idea at least for this morning, so slept in.

But, I need to exercise . . . I wonder if I an even get a shoe on!

  6. That bunny was just a little tyke. It was at a hard angle from which to get photos (not straight on through the window, but sideways at an angle through the window, which often blurs the resulting photos), but he was so cute I had to get some. It isn’t necessarily clear in these photos, but the grass was wet, and apparently he didn’t like the feel of wet grass on his little paws, so he was staying on the walk (which is also wet, of course). Periodically he’d lean way out and grab a mouthful of browse, but he kept his feet on the walk when he did. He was so round as he hunkered down and his ears so small that I thought him adorable. The last photo is because he was sitting directly across from my husband’s desk, so I suggested my husband look out the (closed) blinds to see the tiny rabbit. The moment my husband looked through the blinds, the rabbit saw movement. He turned, paused for a second or two to figure out what to do, and then he was gone. He’d been sitting there with no concern in the world for several minutes until then, and even his “escape” shows none of the hasty retreat a more mature rabbit would show.

The birds are tree swallows. I think it was the day after AJ posted tree swallow photos, or maybe that same day. I commented that I’d only once seen the species, or at least only once seen them and been able to identify what sort of swallows they were. Well, I was out walking to check a field near my home and see what wildflowers and wildlife I could find. Turning back home, almost to my yard this male (the blue one) flew across my path, practically in my face. I thought he wasn’t looking where he was going (swallows can get pretty distracted with chasing insects), but then he landed right across the street from me at eye level on that sign (it’s a country road, a car every few minutes but not a heavily traveled road). Even when cars drove right by him, on his side of the street, he stayed on the sign. I took quite a few photos of what is a lovely bird, with exquisite, unusual wings for the aerial maneuvers it takes to chase an insect and catch it midair. But it didn’t occur to me why he was sitting there until a female flew in and he chased her. Then I realized he was waiting until I left so he could go to his nest! He didn’t want me to see it, so he was patiently waiting until I left, grooming himself and looking unconcerned but probably getting mad at me for wasting his time. When the female came, he was afraid he didn’t know about my presence, so he chased her to keep her from the nest. Anyway, I backed off a few feet, and then they both went to the nest (which turned out to be in a metal nest box on the back of the electric pole). Other swallows were flying around, too, by that time, so I suspected they had some young in the nest and some that had fledged. But I was happy when both of them landed briefly on the sign and let me get one picture of them together that shows both their faces.

  7. Michelle, the swallows were the day we left for the Smokies, I think, and the baby rabbit was a couple weeks before that, but they’re both taken from within my yard (though the swallows were across the street from me). I posted the link to the Smokies book, but I didn’t yet choose which photos to send to AJ since I already posted the link to the book and AJ had too many photos from me waiting to post. But I’ll send him a few at some point.

  8. I will probably watch it later. I am interested in coyotes and your coyote stuff.

As to rabbits, we let half of ours out a couple of months ago. We normally have a couple of them free but they look so happy and content that I could not resist letting more out. We also have lots of wild rabbits. The wild ones will usually let us walk right past them as long as we don’t look at them. The tame ones will let us step over them and will come hopping up to us. Though they all will also race off at a moment’s notice when they are feeling rabbity. I had also heard that having rabbits around would dissuade the gophers and mice and voles and it appears to be working. No new signs of activity at the gopher and mouse holes. Of course, the snakes are also hard at work.

  9. When Lee was finally able to sell his bread route last year, I felt sorry for Mike, the young man who bought it, knowing what a very tough route it is. Lee was very honest with Mike, even if it meant he could have lost the sale. Even so, I worried about how he would do with the route.

Lee said Mike didn’t tell his wife about it until after he’d bought it. That’s not a good sign to begin with. As the months have gone on, Lee has learned that the route lost its Walmart stores, & one brand that sold quite well is now delivering their own products. Those two losses were a huge financial hit to the route.

Today, Lee ran into a guy that owns one of those routes, Bob. Bob said that it appears that Mike has walked away from his route. He didn’t try to sell it, he just stopped coming in & running it, so it reverts to the company. Although that was not the proper way to handle it, I do feel so bad for the guy.

Mike is a fellow believer. I’m praying that he will be open to learning a lesson about this from God, & that he will not let bitterness take over.

  10. A lady in the Moebius Syndrome Facebook group posted a picture she saw that she found quite offensive. Someone came across a photo of a young woman with Moebius, with slightly crossed eyes, & her lips not being able to close, & put words to it to the effect that she is inbred. (Something about “Uncle/Daddy” & “Sister/Mommy”. 😦

When I was about eight or nine, there were a couple cousins in my dance class. Their moms told them that I was “retarded”, & of course, they felt they needed to tell me. My mom was furious!

  11. Donna, excellent video and well balanced showing several views. And the pictures were good as well. I enjoyed it. But who am I to say? That is by far the longest video I have watched in a very long time.

  12. Karen 😦 People.

Took the dogs to the dog park — a couple regular guys (from weekends) were there but there also was a guy I hadn’t seen in years, Tom (whose dog is named Tom).

Tom (the person) was very excited about voting for Hillary today. I did my well-honed “oh, uh-huh,” noncommittal head nod in reaction. 🙂 I’ve learned this from years of living in a dark blue city & state.

  13. Glad you felt the same way about the video, mumsee — I thought it was very even-handed, something you don’t see too often on that subject matter. People are either one one extreme or the other.

It reminded me, too, that when coyotes were attacking the grazing goat herd on one of our large development properties a few years ago, the herder got a Llama which pretty much solved the problem (along with a fence reinforcement).

I wonder if the city would allow us to all keep Llamas? Annie’s personal security guard.

(Although I also recall that Llamas are prone to stomping dogs, so maybe not, on second thought.)

  14. Donna, Georgia is a red state outside of Atlanta. Here you get two for one!

The weather has cooled a bit. This is the longest I’ve gone in years without turning on the air conditioning. And with Art’s office without a working cooling system until a few days ago, well, our two electric bills should be almost a joy to pay.

Sorry to hear about that guy losing the route, Karen. That is tough.

I want to go back and watch that video on the coyotes.

  15. Donna, a llama or a donkey. Only there may be complaints about inter-animal cruelty when the donkey kicks the coyotes into the middle of next week or the llama stomps them into a throw rug. You can’t please all of the animal rights activists all of the time.

  16. I will never forget my sister in law’s aghast expression when she let her not so well controlled dog run loose on our last place. The donkeys had that poor basset straddled in no time and ran him out of the pasture, his ears flying as much as theirs! They were being nice. They were fine with our dogs, but let another trespass? not happening.

  17. Mumsee, the only bunny I ever held (that I remember, anyway) didn’t yet have its eyes open, and it wasn’t picky about how I held it.

See, one night when I wanted to call Misten inside, she pretended she didn’t hear me, since she was too busy sniffing something interesting. So I went out to check on it, and a nest of some kind was built right against the brick of my home, buried in the grass. I interrupted her sensory experience and took her in, but the next morning I pulled out the grass to see what kind of critter was inside. (I was thinking mice.) It wasn’t immediately obvious what they were, and Misten thought we needed a closer look. Before I could stop her, she put her long nose into the nest and pulled one out and put it on the grass for a better sniff. At that point I could see rabbity back legs and it was obvious what the creatures were. There were three of them in the nest. Gently I picked it up, took a couple photos of it, and then put it back in the nest and put the nesting material back in place. Until they left the nest (which I think they did prematurely, since it turns out my hose was sending some water into their nest where it attached to the spigot), I kept Misten out of the yard unless I went out there with her. When we got another rabbit nest a few weeks later, I went out with her once or twice, told her “no” when she sniffed at the nest, and since she seemed to understand she was to leave it alone, after that I only watched her out the window and she indeed ignored the nest. (Collies aren’t predators, and some are known for bringing injured animals to their owners for care.)

  18. Well I totally humiliated myself at the polls today, had to vote 3 times because I kept voting twice for senator (because it flipped over to 2 pages, there were so many candidates). I finally required a tutoring session with a poll worker who tried to talk very s-l-o-w-l-y to me as I was clearly a dense person. Argh.

So I voted. As often as I could.

  19. I thought we were so far beyond this. Somebody stuffed stuff down the bathroom sink and tub in the boys’ bathroom. Only two prospects and one is more likely. I will see when I get it apart and find out what all is down there.

  20. Unfortunately, her phone’s battery died, so we can’t call it.

On the post of that picture I mentioned earlier, a couple people with Moebius commented about how cruel it was, & explained a bit about Moebius. At first, some of the other commenters put them down for “whining”. But eventually, the man who had posted it deleted it.

  21. Glad he deleted it. I hope he will develop a bit more empathy.

Karen, that is too bad about the young man who bought the business. It clearly was more than he could handle. I hope he learned something worth learning and is not too damaged by the financial problems that can be there. 😦 It is good the Leon was honest about it.

Still praying that all is working out at the JH ranch for K and BG, and that home disagreements will be resolved. In Jesus’s name, Amen

  25. Saw a giant raccoon lumbering along the sidewalk as I drove up to my house. Better than a coyote.

(Also saw a cat dash across the street, right next to the ravine where coyotes are; I wonder how they manage to survive as long as they have.)

Annie’s safely locked indoors for now, which I’m sorry about (she does get some limited outdoor time in the backyard when I’m home and can keep an eye on her) … I’d never get a cat now if I didn’t have one — or a small dog for that matter.
