I need to prepare a SS lesson on Acts 8 for tomorrow.
Tomorrow I will have taught my 1200 th SS lesson. I taught my first early in 1964, don’t have the exact date.
That amounts to 23 52/week years. I took a couple off years off to go to Purdue and the Naval War College
I taught 1137 at Boulevard BC in Falls Church. 63 in the 16 years I’ve been here.
I am buying a house in Greensboro that I have never seen. Except on the internet.
Location, location.
Chuck & Linda selected it.
Lots of downsizing for us.
We do need it.
No. We don’t want to move.
There comes a time.
We did that for my father. I filled it with his life and he was happy there and safe. We didn’t worry so much about him after that and my brothers and their families visited regularly. It worked well for us.
I so wish my folks had downsized before me dad died. My mom had to do so at that time. She could not do it, so it was done for her. There is still hurt and pain from that for the adult children left with the task. I am happy my dad got to be able to do so much until he died. OTOH, it would have been so much better for them to have given more away to those they really wanted to have it. It is so difficult to know when the time is right to do this. It will, no doubt, be a bittersweet move for you, Chas and Elvera. You will be surrounded by prayer.
🙂 Last weekend being able to spend time with our daughter and her family. We enjoyed two identical church services since our granddaughter was in a program and had to perform at both. Watched our grandson run a 5k. Watched the newest little one dance in the womb. Well, we saw the affects of that. 🙂
😦 Anxiety. Paperwork that just cannot seem to be reconciled, but must be. 😦
🙂 Mr P’s Baby Boy (he won’t admit it but it is obvious this is his favorite child) is coming over to spend the afternoon with him and the night with us.
😉 So I guess it was a good thing That Darn Cat threw up on the bed. Now Baby Boy will have fresh sheets.
I am the only child of a pack rat. I had so much stuff to sort through when my father died that I am sure I got rid of some things, that if I could remember what they were, I would regret. My advice to anyone getting older is to get rid of things they no longer want or love. Ask your children if it has special meaning and if they want it. If they do, they need to come get it. If they don’t come get it; it goes to charity. The less cluttered your life is, the easier it will be.
Of course once again, I am talking a good game. I am currently married to a pack rat who will not get rid of some of his mother’s cookware and some mismatched dishes, an old alarm clock and clothes he has had in his closet since the 1980’s and a pair of too narrow boots that he bought in San Antonio in 1984. He is saving it in case we need it or in case one of the children needs it.
1. Oldest son is married and neither he nor his wife want or need any of what we have.
2. Middle son has been in the Marine Corps for 7 or so years and has what he needs and wants.
3. Youngest son is renting a house and will only take things away from here if I beg him. We have an agreement. If I offer it, he takes it and drops it off to charity if he doesn’t want it. (We Southern Women are sneaky like that)
4. BG doesn’t need or want any of it because when she moves out and sets up housekeeping I am going to go through my things again and send them with her.
I took a pickup truck loaded with junk to the recycle place.
Than we had lunch at Appleby’s.
A minor thing it might seem.
But I told you I had a hard time getting her to drink?
She drank all of her tea and made the straw gurgle with the last bit.
I was delighted to hear that.
🙂 Fun night Friday watching one of our very talented church “kids” perform in one of the lead roles in “Into the Woods” at the local community college. Very talented group of young people.
🙂 Also interviewed a group of teen girls for a story earlier in the day. So when did our young girls get so unbelievably, radically skinny? Not thin, but skinny-skinny? Tooth-pick legged-skinny?
😦 It was a long performance, 3 hours, so after a long day at work I was beat when I finally got home at after 11 p.m. Theater chairs were padded but not all that comfy. My butt was numb!
🙂 Slept in until almost 9 a.m.!
🙂 Cool weather here, with lots of marine layer action rolling in from the sea, in and around and over us.
🙂 😦 Chas, I’m glad you’ll be moving — but not glad, too. I understand your conflicted feelings, it’s a lot of big changes all at once for both of you. You’ll feel better once it’s over and you’re all re-settled. Praying it goes smoothly and you’ll have a lot of help.
Moving is always a headache and is much complicated emotionally when it’s a forced move. I had to give up my all-time favorite little 1920s apartment by the ocean in the wake of my mom’s death (to rent a house so I could keep her 2 dogs — no one else would take them and I really did try to find new homes).
I remember crying and feeling just so sad the last time I took a look around the near-empy place — I’d only been there 4+ years or so, but it was such a tumultuous time in my life. And I really, really didn’t want to move. At all. 😦 But it turned out good for me on the other side of it all.
I found it too, Jo! I’ve never been to NC but husband lived there for a short time as a teenager.
🙂 I forgot to mention that my garden has been tilled already – that usually doesn’t happen for another 3 weeks! Wonderful neighbour stopped by with his tractor, but husband had already rototilled
🙂 Our family had a wonderful afternoon in Arden, Delaware watching HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan. The singing was beautiful and the expressions on the singers faces brought out the humor of the opera.
🙂 I called my mom’s 2nd (3rd?) cousin today (at long last). Kept the conversation to 90 minutes, which is pretty good for her. 🙂 But nice to talk with her, she turns 93 in June, is now confined to a wheelchair, has macular degeneration so can’t really see — but God has brought some faithful friends and caretakers to provide for her needs, including one male nurse from the Congo who is apparently always quoting Scripture to her 🙂
She lost her husband in 1999 (he was 92) after 49 years of marriage, they were very close, he was a high school “shop” teacher; and her stepson died just a few months ago as did her beloved little dog, Jo-Jo. And she and my mom were very close (though she lives in Salinas) so she still misses her a lot.
Anyway, good to provide a listening ear and I really will call her more often from now on. I’m an awful relative. .. 😦
We are trying to get to church this morning.
I’m helping her get dressed.
🙂 I discovered that the panties she was wearing were over the panties she had on already.
Yes! Two pair.
That’s the way it is. But she is appropriately dressed now.
Greensboro is 3.5 hours from here.
Everyone at Friendly Avenue BC knows me because I’m “Chuck’s dad”. Chuck and a Son in law are deacons and daughter, Becky is children’s ministry.
So they all know me. But I don’t know them.
They are good folks. It will work out. FABC is not nearly as large as FBCHNC.
That house is gorgeous, charming. Sweet. And still bigger than mine 🙂 And way cheaper than California prices.
Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll love it. Kind of fun to start fresh, too, with a brand new neighborhood to explore. Is there a Lions club you can join there?
I’m sure the church will draft you quickly into duty.
My parents are 83 and 79. We are their closest relatives at a five hour car ride. My brother has invited them to move to a one story on his street. They have no interest, but are beginning to need help. It’s a hard situation.
Chas, that is a lovely house. New HAVC in 2012, should last 10-15 years; maybe longer because of your climate. New roof in 2015, should last 20+/- years. Nicely updated, the granite in the kitchen will be easy to care for and you won’t have to worry if you put a hot dish on it. It won’t scorch. Hardwood, even in the bedrooms, will make it seem louder but I wouldn’t recommend any rugs because of the tripping hazard. There are other things you can do to absorb any noise. It looks very homey. I hope it is near to where Chuck and Linda live.
The yard looks nice and flat so that will make maintenance a little easier on you. Your “other” real estate agent highly approves.
I wouldn’t totally nix the idea of a small dog. It might be good companionship for Elvera, and I promise when I talk to Amos he understands me like no one else. When I was single and no body loved me and I was feeling down, my dog loved me. A dog might be a good friend to you too. You may consider rescuing a dog from a rescue organization or shelter rather than deal with Puppyhood.
And as Kim mentioned, animals can be a special blessing when life is a little rocky. They provide a new focus to take your mind off of the sadness and the difficulty. Our first dog (my dad had ruled out a dog for years until this little stray came along one day) had that effect on our household when my dad was diagnosed with cancer.
Our little black, scruffy puppy was a welcome diversion on many occasions during those difficult years to come.

Husband is home!
Rain is making everything green and beautiful.
I got most of the mowing done before the rain so it won’t be quite so overwhelming later.
The hollyhocks are filling in their bed nicely. And everything around….

So how far away is that from your current home, Chas? You’d be going to that large Baptist church you attend when you visit the kiddos?
