  2. We had an enjoyable meal last night at Outback. We were given gift cards for there by the parents of the young lady our son helped to get safely to their home before he came home. That was very thoughtful of them. 🙂

    I just called Hendersonville Heating. Something isn’t working. I have the thermostat set on 74 degrees. It’s 65. Furnace must run some because it’s 24 outside.
    We aren’t freezing. We have gas firelogs in the living room.
    But it isn’t comfortable..

  7. Another option, when a post disappears, sometimes you can hit “undo” or “control z” and get it back. (I haven’t tried control z on here, but on other places it has worked.)

  8. We just had our first ever (as far as we know) pileated woodpecker on a suet feeder! Now that she knows where it is, hopefully she will return. (My husband wasn’t home, but I called him to tell him, since that is one of two species we haven’t gotten on our feeders but would like to get–the other is indigo buntings.) It’s only the second time I’ve even seen the species in our yard. I didn’t dare go close enough to the window to take a photo, since the birds tend to be shy until they’re used to our presence, and it’s more important that she learn this is a place with good food than that I get a photo, but I got a photo from the kitchen doorway (and thus through the screen on the bottom half of the window), so at least I have photo evidence she came by.

  9. Good Morning…sun shiny and above freezing in the Forest!
    Oh Cheryl, we took our feeders down just to rid ourselves of pesky woodpeckers! 😛
    Lulah has decided that chewing on the door frame at the back door is quite fun….but after tasting the sour apple spray, she had decided perhaps it’s not such a good idea…..

  10. Spent the morning trying to get a handle on the bookkeeping work that needs to be done. We do have a firm doing some of it now, but I have to figure out which is my work and which theirs. The two missionaries who were left here didnt know much about the finances so it would have been a real challenge if they hadn’t hired the accounting firm. I will be supervising the firm’s work and doing the parts of it that we didn’t want outsiders doing. It should be much less than I was doing before once I get it figured out.

    Stopped work early to attend a baby naming ceremony. Well, I just went briefly to the party. The ceremony part was this morning and that is a men’s thing.

    Have not slept two of the last three nights. Vacation must be over. 😦

    Off to show the movie War Room to my Bible study ladies, launching a 12 week study on prayer. We’re using an IVPress book that studies 12 specific prayers straight from Scripture. Should be interesting.

    El Nino has arrived!

    Rain, glorious rain, steady, strong rain in the first of what is supposed to be a full-on rainy week (or more). Storms lined up off the coast.

    Pray for my roof.

    But otherwise, we are all very happy in Southern California right now.

  22. When a post seems to disappear, I have found oftentimes I can touch the comment box on my phone and the post reappears. I think they get partially on the way to posting and get stuck somewhere. I was so happy to realize I could “resurrect” what I thought was lost forever. Not sure if it would work on a laptop or desktop computer. Let me know if anyone wants to test it out when you think a post has been lost.

  29. Art went to work today. Son is in his room working on lesson plans and a syllabus, while brother is in the
    bathroom fixing plumbing, and I am sitting on the love seat with Miss Bosley sitting in my lap making up for lost cuddle time last week. I am indulging in a form of
    bon-bons, Snickers baking bites that are too big to use as chocolate chips since they are small chunks. Cookie’s loss is my gain (#s and all).

  37. We are using a John Ortberg video /book for our new January Sunday evening study at church. I took Wesley along with me and I think he enjoyed being there even though it is all much older people. I told him they all pray for him and Art.

  38. Michelle, I think the content of your book is such that it needs to be in print on paper. But if you were able to do something with a novella or short story even that you offer to subscribers or maybe even in colaboration with an O C website, then it might get you some new looks at your major work.

    You’ve had great success with fiction compilations. Has anyone done a compilation of fictional stories based on the lives of well known devotional writers? Just brainstorming!

  44. Peter! No one would believe that I was 29! You have to be somewhat realistic when you lie about your age. I admit to having an 18 year old daughter and I admit to going through 5 years of infertility to have her so I have to admit to at least 40, but that might be a “trashy” so lets admit to 42. 😉

    I, of all people, should know better . . .

    All good ideas, Janice, but I’ve decided to listen to my agent on this and am waiting. I have all my OC blog posts collected into an ebook but I needed permission from OC’s publishers to share it and I was told no. (They did give me permission for all the OC quotes in Poppy, so I’m grateful for that).

    Ladies adored War Room. It was a great way to start. They got very serious however, when I told them they’d all be jumping Double Dutch by the end of the study.

    “That will sure take a lot of prayer,” called someone from the back and we all laughed.

  46. So my friend G’s stepfather, Papa J’s funeral was yesterday. I had known Papa J had a Jewish background. He was born in Holland in 1945 and lost most of his family during the Holocaust. He was born with hemophilia and eventually developed some kidney and orthopaedic problems.
    At some point in his life he became a Christian. His first wife brought two children to their marriage, and they had two children. G’s mother, his second wife brought G. They were ALL Papa J’s children and were honored as such at his funeral.
    Several friends spoke of what a wonderful man, businessman, friend, and mentor he was. They all said he was their best friend. It was also mentioned that his wife of 30+ years was his “princess”. That would be G’s mother.
    It turns out the minister is of Jewish heritage but become a Christian and a minister. He said Papa J was one of his best councelors and where else in South Alabama was he going to find another Christian Jew? He said he broke down crying last Sunday when he got the call.
    Through everything, losing his family, having hemophilia, etc, he was the most positive person any of these people knew. He lived life to the fullest—knowing he may end up in the hospital from waverunning, diving, fishing, or any of the things he did.
    His Jewish heritage was honored in some prayers that were said, rocks being placed on the casket, and everyone having the opportunity to throw a shovelful of dirt in the grave.
    His was a life well lived.

  47. National Bird Day, huh? Well, they’ve been cooperating here. Four kinds of woodpeckers on the feeders (and we are surrounded by trees, so woodpeckers aren’t a bad thing here, and they are sure lovely and interesting): pileated, red-bellied, northern flicker, and downy. (No hairy yet today, as far as I know.) We’ve also had a male cardinal, blue jays, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, pine siskins, and goldfinches. Below the feeders, mourning dove and American tree sparrow and I think a few juncos. Also house finches and house sparrows.

    And to top it all off, an adult Cooper’s hawk or a sharp-shinned hawk (two virtually identical species) came in and selected a nice plump sunflower-seed-fattened house sparrow as its choice of the bird feeders’ offerings. And it ate it on the grass in a decent location for photos.

  48. Michelle, I missed most of the discussion on your book yesterday. I love to read historical fiction. Could you take your knowledge of Oswald and Biddy and write a fictional story based on them? Perhaps have them serving in another area?
    I don’t know. I am sure your editors will steer you in the right direction. That’s why you have them, correct?

  60. Safely home with all my luggage and no extra fees. The first security guard in Auckland was laughing at me. He asked why would I have a bathroom faucet in my carryon??? I told him that I was just spreading around the weight.
