  3. Good morning. I thought that was a Kim photo.

    We went last night to help future son-in-law choose and cut a tree. (Well, he cut it himself.) We couldn’t go until he got off work, and then it was chilly and raining a bit. When we got to the tree lot, the lady suggested, “Surely you’re here to choose a pre-cut tree?” and he wasn’t. So she loaned us some flashlights, and we were off to find a tree. Somehow we found a perfect one anyway. (I shouldn’t say “we,” since my husband and I stood by the first good one they found in case they wanted it–it might be hard for them to locate it again without a marker–but the young people found a tree.)

    Then he took us to his apartment (also the future home of our daughter) and cooked us steak dinners (with her help). He has a nice place, only with a decidedly masculine feel to it. (Wall art consists of a poster of muscle cars and a poster of mustaches–the latter a gift from a friend, presumably a friend with a mustache since he doesn’t have one.) The bedroom has a walk-in closet (I’ve only ever lived one place that had such a feature) but the bathroom has an appalling shortage of places to put stuff, just one drawer and a small counter.

    We got to look at old yearbooks, finding photos of both daughters, the young man, and other people we know. (All of them attended a small private school near our home.) And the food was excellent. And I’m not sure that every 25-year-old young man would comfortably host his future in-laws and cook a steak dinner (with asparagus, home fries, and rice, and several beverage choices).

  4. Greetings! We’re having a good time at D1’s house. We’ll celebrate a three-year-old’s birthday later. Ds 2&3, along with a niece are coming to set up the tree. Then the ladies are going wedding dress shopping. I’m not sure what we men folk are going to do. I suppose we’ll sit around and inform the son-in-law to be of his future. Not really. He knows what he’s getting into as he knows my son and son-in-law.

  5. My, everyone is getting Christmas trees so early.

    I had to get the trash & recycles out this morning, trash day was pushed back for Thanksgiving so it’s Saturday this week. Had a restless night with an odd nightmare that got me up (and all the lights on!) at around 2 but I managed to fall back asleep 90 minutes later, after sitting up in the living room a while and then reading in bed where it was warmer.

    But I may go back to bed for a little while, it’s still only 7 a.m. here and it is a Saturday …

  7. Enjoying listening to the small folk cook their breakfast. Nine year old has finally stopped squeezing the eggs open and is now cracking them as well as little sister. They fed the rabbits, chicks, chickens, turkeys, guineas, goats, goats, and other goats and walked and fed the dogs. They made sure everybody had plenty of water. And perhaps most important, they remembered to dress for the weather. It was ten out when they started.

  8. Chas, I had an interesting conversation with my brother. When I told him I was planning to have London broil for Thanksgiving, he asked if I said we were having aluminum foil. 🙂

    My brother is at our house and we’ve been buying snakes at Ace along with a few other supplies. We have been twice to the store. I asked the cashier if she sees the same people about ten times in a day. She said especially if they are doing plumbing work.

    So far Miss Bosley has not bothered my brother. She would not do her cute catching paper ball tricks, though. She was fascinated by the smell of his shoes since he has chickens and his neighbor has puppies. I thought maybe Miss Bosley thought my brother was our son who had aged quite a bit in the last six months. 🙂

  10. So, I got the care packages put together and husband took them to town when he went in for coffee with the old guys. He is an old guy, so he can do that. Anyway, the post office was not open that early so he just left them on the post office counter. The boys went in later to work at the gun club. They stopped by to pay the postage when the office was open for a couple of hours. I like living here.

  17. Real estate guy at the dog park has had a difficult client lately, he arrives at the park all in a huff about it some days and is on and off his cell trying to navigate them through it.

    I just delivered some old cans of paint, rat poison & old cleaning solvents to the hazardous waste collection site, been meaning to gather all that up and get it out of here for a while. Feels good to have that chore done.

    Now I’m trying to decide where to start in this house … Front and work back? Back and work forward? Bedroom?? Argh. So many options.

  18. Sunday morning here so going to worship soon.
    Then I need to begin on report cards and see what I still need to assess.
    Went to a pre wedding yesterday. Groom is American and Bride is Dutch, so the wedding will be in Holland, but they wanted to celebrate with all their friends here so they had a lovely ceremony with the bride wearing her dress. it was in a park and no one minded the rain.

  21. Janice @ 12:13. Not likely any kin. Except for a brother of Elvera’s dad, who went out to Arkansas about 70 years ago, all the Collins of that clan are local. They know because the first known male of the clan was Caswell (Cas) Collins who was born to Mary Collins in 1833. Mary never married. No one knows anything else.

    We had an excellent time. 47 people were there. The most at our house was 24. The weather was excellent, sunny and about 70. The kids played outside.

    Since AnnieLee died, no one fixes stuffin’ without onions anymore. but I ate more than enough.

  22. 😦 Linda, Chuck’s wife has thyroid cancer. They will remove the thyroid on 15 December, then “take a look”. We’re praying that that’s all. A person can live without a thyroid these days.

  24. Kim, yeah, the stainless refrigerator in the place where dog park real estate guy was representing client also became an issue, he threw his hands up at that point. 🙂

    Yay, Janice. Get some overalls, a cute logo (maybe featuring Miss Bosley), a van and you’ll be all set.

    Chas, a co-worker went through that a couple years ago, she’s doing well — but I remember at one point during the initial treatments after surgery she had to be isolated as she literally was radioactive. A friend loaned her a mobile home to stay in for a couple days, she couldn’t even be in contact with her dogs let alone people.

    Now she’s on medication to take the place of the thyroid function, seems to be doing OK.

  25. So I worked at both the front and back of the house, got some much needed picking up done. Also washing all the blankets I use on the sofas for warmth these days (except for the 2 wool American-Indian designed ones that have been especially cozy, they’re not washable but don’t need it either right now), swept the floors.

  26. silliness: being mildly upset with my haus meri because she threw away all the slightly used tissues that I had laying around. She doesn’t know that the store has been out of tissues for quite a while. I was hoarding, not just being slovenly. 🙂

  28. Yep, this is an especially fine stainless washer/dryer combo. Front loading and all the bells and whistles.
    Now my buyers have decided that the sellers are “spoiled rich kids” because they want to take a little equity with them when they go.
    I see both sides but everyone needs to give a little.

  29. Home after not being able to comment during my trip–new Apple products . . . .

    Gorgeous weather in LA. Still sick, wonderful time with family after I got sick and couldn’t talk much. Stargazer stayed in LA to work for a relative for a couple weeks and seek a job in Silicon Sand–a techy area near the freeway. His sister is delighted.

    Much to be thankful for and I may remember real life tomorrow, but tonight I’m just glad to be home. I drove the first 90 minutes and my husband handled the rest.

  30. So dog park guy represents the buyer in this case, and I guess escrow was called off by one of the parties. Originally fridge was going to be part of the deal, but then sellers decided to take it. Oy.

    Considering newer appliances don’t that long anyway … But dog park guy says it’s such a bad season/time of year to buy or sell a house that everyone’s scrambling right now.

    He also declared that he has no idea how he ever survived Buffalo NY in his younger years. It was very, very cold at the dog park tonight.

  31. Also learned that some of our sketchier characters at the park (who weren’t there tonight) are busy buying up guns lately. Sheesh. I really think these guys are harmless, mostly big talkers, but we couldn’t help but wonder why they needed more guns that they (presumably) already had ….

  35. Almost stopped on a whim to buy a cute Christmas tree, just the right size, little water bowl already attached … If it’s there tomorrow I may do it.

    Meanwhile, I’m sad because I think my house looks too “needy” to do outdoor decorations this year. 😦

    But I did notice a car with house-like colored light strings strung over the top and hood and back today leaving the dog park. Maybe I’ll just decorate the Jeep.

    We will have a little tree in the classroom and make stars to put on it.
    Don’t want to do it too soon though as the kids are already over excited.

  39. no, it is a very small tree. I found a nice sturdy nativity set to put under the tree. And then we fill it with stars made from foam glitter paper with five holes that you put glittery pipe cleaners through that make a star of David, five sided.
    Our real project is to make a felt nativity scene with a star, Mary Joseph, and Jesus. I have found them in homes years later as they become a treasure.

    I haven’t cried over Mama Ruth. She was ready. Today is the first day of Advent. She LOVED Christmas. The closing hymn was It is Well with My Soul. I did get misty eyed.

  42. God love my sweet husband. I asked him to hang something in the laundry room. It is an old wooden window that has each piece of glass painted with a seafood. He loves it. Any way….he has a stud finder and it doesn’t matter where the picture, painting, whatever would look best, it gets hung on a stud. Oh, and on a heavy duty hook, because we don’t want to take chances.

  48. Not sure if that post made sense. I am still so very tired from all we have been through. I finally made it back to church. I sat on the back pew with a lady friend. I knew that I would not have as many people to shake hands with and pick up germs from during the fellowship time by sitting way back there. It was great to be back. I was able to change the decor on the media center window for Christmas. After church I put out our front door wreath, and decorated a little around the mailbox. I considered doing a Christmas tree, but Miss Bosley would think she hit the jackpot with all the new toys in the form of ornaments dangling on the tree for her practicing pouncing skills.The only good thing about it would be that the TV screen would finally be passe with her.

    We are at the office. Art needed to pay some bills. Tomorrow we go to see another doc about sleep apnea. I will get to see a new building!

  51. Today I was asked to host our community Christmas potluck again: “You just decorate and provide the punch and we’ll do all the rest” Now that’s MY kind of potluck! Now we just need to find a date when we can all be here.

  53. Janice – We have a four foot tall Christmas tree that we put on top of the entertainment center. The cats don’t get up there (due to it being pretty high, & not having a good place to land if they tried), & Forrest can’t reach it, either. 🙂

    Maybe you could get a small, pre-lit & pre-decorated tree to put up someplace Miss Bosley can’t get to, if you’d like to have some sort of tree. I would mostly miss the lights, so if I couldn’t have any tree, I think I would string lights along the tops of the walls, or something like that.
