  1. Blessed be the day and night and all the hours where you are today. May you find God’s strength lifting you up in times of weakness. May you feel the deep well of God’s joy bringing up buckets of refreshment. May you know the peace of Jesus today and each day after.

  2. Thanks Janice. How refreshing.
Working on an Australian Scholastic book order for the whole school and for some home school families. A very large order and very complex. And then we have notes that some things are Christmas gifts so do not give them to the children. Lots of work for me, but then I get free books and books, books, and more books. However it is difficult to have so many in your luggage as lots of these are for grandchildren.

  3. I have the appointment at 10 am this morning. I read what I could on the internet about the company. While my math skills were never good enough to allow me to become an engineer, I have spent my life around them…I understand the language…or at least I used to. They have a different kind of brain.
I am very nervous. I am so scared to jump. What if it is another failure? What if it isn’t? You have all been with me through this employment adventure/disaster so I think you may understand what I am feeling. I would appreciate prayers. The last time I asked for prayers about this I asked you to pray that I would make the right decision, then I asked you to pray they would make the right decision. We know how that ended up, but there has to be a reason.

(Most recently when I spoke with the CFO of this company he shared with me that part of the reason they let me know was because they are 2 employees away from having to conform to Obamacare and they knew they needed to hire someone in marketing—thanks for nothing Obama)

  4. Ah, Back to the future anniversary. That was supposed to be a big, fun story for us as this ‘secret cinema’ group from the UK was planning to produce one of its crazy-successful, hip, immersive re-creations of the film on a remote wharf in our port. It would have gone on for a couple months and anticipated to draw thousands of people on a regular basis from all over LA.

It was all top-secret (part of the gig involves a “treasure hunt” for ticket holders who only discover the location of the production in the final days) and from the videos I watched online of their other productions (they also do Star Wars and other films), it would have been very cool. We were looking forward to it all summer, planning coverage (even though we couldn’t report anything about it yet due to the secrecy).

But it wasn’t to be. The producers got spooked by all the reports of our coming El Nino and pulled out of the plans about a month ago.

  5. I’m heading off to the local homeless mission this morning for a story I hope to do for the weekend. I’m getting a tour but before that the director invited me to come a little early to sit in on part of their Bible study, so I’m planning to do that.

  6. Donna, you may want to join the procession to Idaho, or maybe North Carolina, the heading of this story (From Drudge) says “99 percent probabiluity.

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — If scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena are correct, a moderately-sized earthquake is expected within the next two-and-a-half years.

JPL experts predict a possible 5.0 magnitude quake in Los Angeles, but say it very well could be stronger. JPL geophysicist Dr. Andrea Donnellan, along with seven other scientists, has been using radar and GPS to measure Southern California’s chances for a sizable earthquake, and has made a sobering hypothesis about another big one.

  7. Well, the “big one” has been predicted for many years, since I was in college at least. 🙂 They said back then (following a large quake) that the BIG ONE was on its way within a few years.

We’ve had some moderate quakes (which is that a 5-pointer would be) — and some more serious ones throughout the state, of course — so we were all kind of laughing yesterday about how this was somehow new “news.” 🙂

Predicting a moderate to stronger quake in L.A. is basically guaranteed to come true in almost any time frame. It’s safe to put money on that one, in other words. 🙂

  8. In His Hands Kim….waiting and trusting…it’s that “be still and know” moment that can be so difficult…continuing to ask Him to give special care over this situation ❤
I am married to an engineer…they do love to talk about stuff…I do get the glazed over look with a nod and a smile….and when someone dares to ask him what he does…I give that pleading look of "don't ask him we'll be here for hours"!!
It's raining here this morning….and snow is falling up at Eisnenhower Tunnel…it's time!!

  9. I am married to a man who often learns by talking through the material. He had to study electrical systems among other things. I still remember him showing me the electrical or some system grid and explaining it all. Mmm-mm. Verrry interesting, but not funny. Some of you may know where I heard that quote. If you are old. 😉

  10. Kathaleena, you brought on a senior moment. I remember the words but don’t remember who said them. Was it Maxwell Smart? The Three Stooges? Or someone entirely different like maybe a routine on SNL?

  11. OK, so one of the deals when you marry an engineer is you often end up with children of an engineer.

Here’s the very interesting column from Breakpoint I sent to her “The Information Enigma” about DNA: http://www.breakpoint.org/bpcommentaries/entry/13/28340

    Here’s her response:

As the biologist, what they say is correct for the most part. The evolution described is microevolution, evolution on the level of DNA. The author missed a point where we see duplications of genetic code in DNA which can cause an increase in information. There are several problems with duplications, but technically it can increase your DNA if done in meiosis; think like egg formation where all the DNA is compacted into one mega egg and three polar bodies. The article really simplifies the argument, but it’s fine.

If you want to talk about problems, look for the transitioning species that have these partial advances. Hint: we haven’t found any that survived to pass along their genetics. The only way we have created DNA in the lab is with highly sophisticated technology. While we do see DNA mutations and duplications, I haven’t heard of examples where they added anything meaningful besides a redundancy system. Plus there are a million other factors like epigenetics and DNA remodeling/inactivation that thwart any proof of this hypothesis.

But who am I? I only have a degree in cellular and DEVELOPMENTAL biology

  12. So, I was chatting with one of my progressive relatives yesterday and she mentioned a distinguished PhD in Christianity whom she’d been reading, who wrote that book The Zealot. Apparently, he returned to his Muslim roots when someone suggested he should be true to where he was born.

    ??

Anyway, she told me that to be authentic, believers need to follow the teachings of James, not Paul.

I let that pass, but it’s been bothering me–even though I love the book of James. Today, I was reading in 2 Peter 3:14 and beyond:

“Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless, and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation–as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”

Just before this, I had been reading PAUL in Romans 1 and thinking how troubling that passage is for folks–and wondering if it is also applicable to those who encourage such behavior–like . . . well, guess who?

I love it when God answers a question we’ve only half formed in our minds . . . 🙂

  13. We are looking into James in Sunday School. We have known people who insist that Paul should be thrown out for his chauvinistic ideas. We don’t agree with that. There are probably people who think James should be thrown out. I suspect that is why we have so many denominations, people prioritizing Scripture to what is important to them. We should all read Ephesians and be happy.

  14. I am back, did you miss me? I got called to the school because my fourteen year old daughter was drawing inappropriate pictures and giving them to six year olds. Inappropriate as in pics of children with chains around their necks, dying. Not something I would care about, but schools have zero tolerance.

  15. I told you about crunching my back “bumper” in Williamsburg. It left a big dent and scratch in the driver’s side of the rear end. It doesn’t affect anything but the appearance.
I took it to the repair shop for an estimate yesterday. $816.00
I decided not to repair it. I would have paid $316, but not $816. It will just have to look bad.
I was talking to a guy about something else today and pointed that out to him.
He crawled under the car and pushed the dent out with his hand.
The scratch is still there, but most of the dent was gone.

Now why didn’t I think of that?
    I should have, I just didn’t.

  16. I just did a blog post about the black smoke we saw at the airport when driving in to work .I am now including a theme of the day with each numbered post. My theme today is Jumping to Conclusions. I still have not figured out how to post a photo for each day so it shows all the blank spots where pictures are suppose to be. By the time I get my post finished, I am usually out of time on this computer to be able to find out what I need to do with getting a picture on.

  17. No engineers in our household. The husband of my closest friend is one, though, and has many patents to his name. Don’t ask me for what, though — you know, the polite nod routine. 😉

  18. I think the big conflict between those who prefer James’ epistle and those who favor Paul is a misinterpretation of the works issue. Paul’s view is works do not save us. James says works show we are saved. Really there is no contradiction at all. Paul wrote to the readers that they could nothing to gain salvation. James wrote that their faith in Jesus is conformed by the works they do after they are saved. Paul refers to faith in the finished work of Christ. James refers to the proof of that faith.

  19. The Mormon young lady to whom I was witnessing two or three years ago was big on the book of James and works, works, works. (The misinterpretation, thereof, as Peter L explained above.)

Which “fits” very well with their verse in the Book of Mormon that is patterned after Ephesians 2:8, with a serious and tragic addition, worded something very close to this: “For it is by grace you have been saved, after all you can do…” 😦

  20. Hi mumsee! I always miss you.

All of Scripture fits together beautifully, but not always at first (superficial) glance. 🙂

Enjoyed my morning at the mission — exec director is a super nice guy, used to patrol Skid Row downtown for LAPD from the ’70s through the mid 1980s, and has such a tender heart.

We’ve been waiting so long for this, with a couple disappointments thrown in, that this feels kind of unreal.

  22. 49 is yours because most of us are sleeping…like normal people Jo! Good evening to you….any sign of rain there? Usually with winds moving in, that is a sign of a front coming in around here….you should see all of the pine needles on the forest floor! It smells so good! Continuing to ask the Lord to bring rain upon the land….
