  7. Good morning!

    Gotta get the car to the shop for, hopefully, routine maintenance.

    I made a mistake with Miss Bosley. She is not a Fancy Feast girl, but a Plain Jane Cat Grub kind of gal. I have given her small portions from one can of Fancy Feast, and it seems to make her wired and aggressive. It does a bad thing like give her deviated pupils (think as in the new Zoo program).

    Time to clean out the car to go for my time waiting at the dealership. Catch y’all later!

    Hooray for Fridays.

    Good debate last night, more entertaining than most, good questions, and it was a chance to see some of these people together & in action. It’s very early, the anticipated “top tier” can still change (a lot). But overall, it was helpful, I think.

  10. Lifesaver, Cheryl!

    We’re off to our annual “rub elbows with the rich and famous over-the-top party” which is actually a lot of fun. I’ll be wearing a sari (see today’s post for how I got it), and at least one adorable granddaughter will be wearing a costume from Aladdin.

    When the men asked what to wear, I suggested a Nehru jacket but only my husband got it. They’re all going as Indian call workers in black slacks and white shirts.

    Food should be stunning, other guests interesting and I’m just hoping the kids hold out. Dinner isn’t served–under a canopy near the beach–until about 8! (I hope I hold out).

    The next day, I journey to a book launch across the bay where my young colleague will teach us to swing dance. This is honor of the release of Sarah Sundin’s latest WWII story. The hero is a Navy lieutenant, so I’ve been trying to coax my son into wearing his father’s choker-whites, if only for the surprise factor.

    To my surprise, my husband didn’t care (he didn’t want to wear them even if he could fit in them), but Stargazer said, “I don’t want to wear a uniform I didn’t earn.”

    I’m just trying to decide if the sari will work to swing dance . . . 🙂 Not.

  13. LA archivists just came across some old negatives of photos taken by the LA Fire Dept during the 1965 Watts riots. Interesting video below …

    We didn’t live far from there and I still remember the National Guardsmen who were stationed on top of the Sears store — and the night, with the riots in full swing, when our cat Nancy was throwing herself against the back door to get in and my mom was sure the rioters had made their way into our yard! (My dad was on night shift back then so it was after midnight, she was waiting up for him and was pretty shaken — until she finally got nerve enough to go look and saw it was our overweight cat demanding attention.) 🙂

    The White House says it’s confident it has the votes to override Republicans who reject the historic accord to limit Iran’s nuclear program agreed to by world powers and Tehran. But some of America’s closest allies are less certain, and are clearing their schedules to meet with wavering Democratic lawmakers in a push to keep the deal intact.

    Some of Washington’s less reliable partners are worried too: Top diplomats from Russia and China joined a rare meeting of world powers’ envoys on Capitol Hill this week with roughly 30 Senate Democrats to tamp down concerns over the nuclear agreement.

    Seems that everyone wants Congress to pass the Iran deal, except those interested in the security of the US.

  15. Just got back from lunch with the cousin I had never met until this trip. She is a believer and we had three hours of great fellowship. Actually, she did most of the talking, but it was good to learn more about that part of the family.

  18. I got my first bi-focals today. I am so unhappy. I have blurry vision.

    (They say “You’ll get used to them” and I am glad to be able to read again–recently I was reading underneath my glasses and not through them–but so far I am in the discomfort phase.)

  19. Miracles from Heaven movie is filming about two miles from our home today. I just found out from my friend Karen. I don’t keep up with celebrities, but Queen Latifa and another woman star are in it. It is a Christian film so I may have to go see it. I have been to a music program in the church they are filming in today.

  21. I have progressive lenses (the no-line lenses that also provide a bit of a mid-range in there) and have never had much trouble adjusting. But I know some people who absolutely cannot adjust and had to go to juggling 2 pairs of single-lens glasses.

    I do use reading-only prescription glasses for the hours I spend in front of a computer at work.

    My eye doctor has said taking glasses off for closeup reading is OK to do — and sometimes that’s most comfortable when it’s bedtime and I’m just doing some reading before turning out the lights.

  22. Cheryl – My first bifocals were the progressive kind, which I adjusted to fairly well. After a few years of those kinds of lenses, for some reason (I don’t know why) I got regular bifocals, with the line. I thought I would never get used to them! It took quite a while, but I eventually found myself used to them.

  23. Yep, I got progressive lenses with a wider “reading” portion than is standard–some pretty expensive glasses, in my opinion, though nowhere near some costs I’ve heard. Problem is, looking straight ahead looks a little bit fuzzy–especially if I’m moving (walking fast, but particularly when my husband drove us home).

  27. I don’t have bifocals, but probably need them now, but I first need to see about cateracts. I have not been to the eye doc in awhile since I was not ready to act on cateracts and the last doc did not want to give me new glasses without taking care of that first. It has been a Catch-22 situation. With husband’s seven days a week work schedule, it has been difficult to take care of anything that would involve his help unless it is a big emergency.

  28. The new visiting cat was outside when I took garbage out so I gave it the rest of the Fancy Feast from the can in the fridge. It will be an aggresive hunter tonight. It has a nice white bib like Miss Bosley, but is otherwise a gray tabby. It seems sweet and has a collar with a bell. I will not grab it up by mistake like I have done with the other cat.

  29. cheryl, try the glasses for a while, if they’re still wacky, go back. … but it may just take a period of adjustment.

    They didn’t have bifocal contacta that would work with my prescription (I have lots of astigmatism), but I had the single-vision contacts for a while (reading in one eye, distance in the other).

    I have a friend who’s used the bifocal contacts and they work great for her.
