  1. Good Morning Everyone!

In his rabbit chasing session last evening, Pastor Steve talked about a brouhaha among the attendees of the Convention of Southern Baptist that is coming up soon..
Seems Dr. Ben Carson had been invited to speak at a pastor’s conference preceding the convention.
There is a group of young guys who call themselves “Baptists 21” who objected. After some discussion, Dr. Carson withdrew.
    The objections were:
    1. He is a Seventh Day Adventist.
    2. They didn’t want to give the impression that the SBC is an arm of the Republican Party. There have been times when, because of the cultural conflict, that Republicans have spoken to the convention. They want to avoid the implications.

Pastor Steve thinks this is unfortunate because it deprives us of the insights of an African American in this era of cultural turmoil. And it gives a precedent for returning to the non-cooperative of SBC with other evangelical agencies.

OTOH, since Dr. Carson declared for the primaries, it is good not to have an active candidate speak.

Pastor Steve then goes into a dissertation on Seventh Day Adventists. If you’re interested, this is a good synopsis.
All of this is on-line at:

    Rabbitchasing.org.
Takes about 20 minutes before the questions, which ends the effective section of the lecture.

  2. 😦 Chas has a dental appointment this morning.
If you’ve never had a dental appointment before, you don’t understand the tension.
I was twenty years old before I had my first dental appointment.

  3. I understand the Convention’s decision but it is unfortunate that you cannot hear what he has to say.
I feel sorry for those of you who have had bad experiences at the dentist. One of my earliest memories is of going to the dentist with my father. First they checked my teeth and then my “treat” was to get to sit on a stool in the exam room while Old Dr Maurice put a cap on my dad’s tooth. I have always loved that fresh, smooth feeling after having mine cleaned. Lest you think all of my dental experiences were sunshine and roses, I have had 4 permanent teeth plus my wisdom teeth removed to make room for the teeth I kept. I have had braces.
When BG was going through the same thing before getting her braces, we had to pull baby teeth as permanent teeth were coming in to make room. She started crying and Dr. Doug came out to tell her dad and me that he wasn’t going to pull her teeth that day. He wasn’t going to be the dentist that made her afraid of dentists. He sent us out to a pediatric dentist. They are much more experience in dealing with frightened children.

  4. You had to remind me we need to make appointments. 😉

Anyone who wants to know what Ben Carson thinks can do so. There are two books written, plus all the media.

  5. Good weather news for us today:

LOS ANGELES — A cold, winter-like storm system out of British Columbia bore down on Southern California today, bringing a threat of showers from this afternoon through Friday evening, along with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

If thunderstorms materialize, they’ll be capable of producing heavy downpours and small hail, according to a National Weather Service statement, which said thunderstorms could affect rush-hour commutes starting this evening.

Conditions will also favor isolated waterspouts in coastal waters, the statement said. ….

In the San Gabriel Mountains, the snow level is expected to fall to 6,000 feet by late this afternoon, later dropping even further, down to 4,500 feet. …

  6. I mailed, sent fedex, all my documents to the PNG embassy in DC on Monday and have been tracking them online. They were received in DC yesterday around noon. Just for fun I checked the return number this morning. They left the embassy yesterday around 6 pm and were already in Sacramento this morning!! Amazing. I am watching out my window and may see them delivered to the church today. This is to receive my official visa in my passport.

Have you noticed that some preachers cant resist using a prayer to preach?

  11. Re: Dr. Carson- I can see why the SBC would not want an active candidate to speak, but just because he differs in theology does not mean he shouldn’t be heard for his non-religious views, or those moral issues with which the SBC agrees, such as homosexual marriage or abortion.

  12. If you hear Pastor Steve’s rabbit. You will understand that Seventh Day Adventist and the SBC are in agreement concerning cultural issues and their solution.
Dr. Carson was not a candidate when the invitation was issued.
Everyone agrees that he should no longer be a speaker.

  13. I think the convention made the right decision. I have encountered Seventh-Day Adventists and their legalism is oppressive, recalling the warning of Paul: “Let no man judge you in food, or drink or in observing a holy day of the new moon or the Sabbath.” I don’t know why they should care so much, since they deny eternal punishment: http://www.challies.com/articles/the-false-teachers-ellen-g-white

Chas, I have a doctor’s appointment on Monday, and I’m already dreading it.

  14. Asking colleagues about Mother’s Day story ideas this morning, our youngest/new reporter suggested eagerly that it would be great if I could find a “two moms” family to feature …

I’m probably not the reporter to do that story …. 🙂

Think I’ll focus on formerly homeless female vets with children who just this week moved into new VOA homes in our area and will be celebrating their first Mother’s Day in a new home.

  15. Due to a couple scheduling conflicts, we’re celebrating Mother’s Day today, a few days early. (For one thing, Emily will be working Sunday afternoon into the early evening.) Chrissy is making a special dinner for us, & Emily is buying a cheesecake for dessert.

When my girls were younger, & mothering was a lot of work, I wasn’t fond of Mother’s Day. When I grew up, we lived away from relatives, so Mother’s Day meant pampering Mom. She didn’t have to cook or anything. That’s what I thought I could expect.

But when I was a mom, we lived near my parents, & about two & a half hours away from Lee’s mom Mary, so Mother’s Day weekend was spent going up to Quincy (Mass.) to see Mary for a day, & then doing something special for my mom the next day. As the mom of young children, who actually would have enjoyed a break, I did not find those yearly weekends restful at all.

I one time brought it up to my mom, in a kind of humorous way, & her reply was that, as the older mother, she deserved to be treated special. (As I write this, I think I’ve written about this before on the blog.)

Now I share Mother’s Day with my daughter. (Mom died shortly before Forrest was born.) Remembering how I felt, I try to make sure that she is not left catering to me, that she can enjoy the day herself. I think we do pretty well on that account.

  16. My brother’s birthday is today so we may have a meal out Sunday as a joint Mother’s Day and Birthday event.

I like your story idea for Mother’s Day, Donna.
    Excellent!

I spent a lot of time in prayer this morning for the National Day of prayer. My one hour of allotted time turned into almost two hours.

  18. 6arrows would be proud of me as I just sorted through my clothes and put my winter things away to be taken to my friends house for storage. I also sorted things and found a few more things to take to the thrift store. I don’t want to be storing junk that I will never use. I cannot sort through the things stored in my house. Lots of boxes of books there. I am going through the filing cabinets inn the basement here. Lots of good teaching materials, but I can’t take them back and don’t know anyone here who would want them.

  19. Re the SBC event: if the conference were cultural, then the speaker would be a good one. But a pastor’s conference really seems like it should have a speaker who is in theological agreement with the pastors. To me that’s more important than whether he is a political candidate (though I wouldn’t want them inviting him because he’s a candidate).

  20. Can you scan in the teaching material, Jo, and then have it available on your computer?

When my children were young, Mother’s Day meant my husband took the boys out for the afternoon so I could rest, read the NY Times and then work the crossword and savoring some alone time.

It always confused my father-in-law but it was a gift to me.

I have no idea what will happen this Sunday. I’ve actually already celebrated Mother’s Day twice–we were in England on Mothering Sunday and Slovenia for Parents Day.

  21. Argh … Just had to call he bank after getting an alert, guess my debit card info was “compromised” somewhere so now I need to get a new card … figured something was wrong when the card was declined at the grocery store tonight on the way home from work.

I have about 70 cents in loose change to my name right now, so I opted to pick up a temporary debit card at the bank tomorrow rather than wait the 5-7 days for a new one to be mailed.

I’m so glad this week is almost over.

  22. I’m not quite sure how to feel about Mother’s Day. When I was younger I hated it–I badly wanted children, and it was just a reminder I was “different” from other women. I once left a church service in tears (for just a few minutes) when the pastor said something about family relationships, and listed husband, wife, mother, father, son, and daughter, and I had “none of the above.” I had (have) siblings, quite a few of them actually, and nieces and nephews, but my family has so emphasized nuclear family over extended family, and I lived a decent way from any of them, that enumerating all the relationships I didn’t have as though it were a complete list just emphasized all the family I didn’t have.

The girls sometimes get something for my husband for Father’s Day and sometimes don’t. Each of them has said “Happy Mother’s Day” one time, and it was sweet both times. But the bigger emphasis is on me doing something for my mother-in-law. (But this year I’m cheating on the homemade card thing, and using a card I made several years ago, but didn’t use, because I’m working on making a card for my in-laws’ sixtieth anniversary, and I want that one to be frameably special, so this one is less important.)
