Good Morning!

This morning’s photos are of our dear friend Kathy’s Wizard of Oz collection. 🙂

She collected all the little pieces and turned them into this. She’s pretty creative. Plus you can close it up when kids are around. 🙂

On a side note, our friend Kathy actually knows Phil and his sister.

And the video has a Wizard of Oz reference! 🙂

  1. Good morning everyone.
The one feature I really like about my smart phone.
I can check at tell that all my people are where they are supposed to be.
    At least, their phones are.

😦 And it tells me that the temperature at MB will be the same as in H’ville. Sixty four degrees. But They will likely go to the gardens anyhow. Argeree and Polly really love the gardens.

  2. A couple of you asked yesterday about my comment that Mr P says I need to make X amount of money per year. The answer is that I took a 10K pay cut when I went back to work with Guy. Mr P thinks I should make twice what I am currently making based on my knowledge, experience, etc. He says I have a poverty mentality and am willing to settle for any ol’ job anyone will give me. The truth is that the thought of not having ANY money (of my own) terrifies me. I have zero self confidence–I realize that might be hard for a few of you to imagine, but I don’t. The last 10 years have worn me out. It seems that not only am I the only person that will work with Guy and put up with him and his demands- HE is the only person that will employee me and put up with whatever it is that is wrong with me as an employee. I don’t feel like I have a lot of choices and at this point I am afraid to go look for something else, because how will I crawl back to him and ask for a job a third time. Being fired twice in two years does something to your self confidence.
So Mr P’s statement about how much I should make is his measure of what he thinks I am worth is more than the current market will bear.

  3. You know, it is kind of ironic that someone has a display based on a children’s book that can be closed up when children are around! (I assume toddlers are in view here, and generally today’s toddlers haven’t been taught to obey. But it’s still humorous.)

  4. I had to drive husband to work real early so it was dark when we left so I have not seen the yards in the light of day. I am hanging out in a Dwarf House, Chick-fil-A, waiting for traffic to die down. It’s a bear going the opposite direction and rather than sit in traffic, I sit here.

Soon I can go get gas and head north.

I have some political action things on my agenda today and may write my article about that.

  5. Just got home. Twice as long drive back as it took to get down there and that was after waiting for traffic to die down.

The yard is really a mess, and all the digging was on a hill area that slopes down to our driveway. It is an area where I had tried to grow the ground cover ajuga or bugle weed. That is difficult to find except by mail order. Not sure I want to in vest in that again. We have lots of liriope (sp?) in the back yard that I could transplant and there is always English ivy and vinca I could transplant for free.

  6. The picture of the display reminds me of a few things. My mother made five complete dollhouses and eleven rooms. Some were of actual places. I introduced her to miniatures when I gave her a book on them to read when she was visiting us. Her miniatures are definitely not for children.

Grand Rapids, Minnesota has a museum for Dorothy in an old childhood home. The quilt shop in an old school always has Wizard of Oz material.

The Wizard of Oz book was in the library at our children’s Christian school. One of the teachers protested having it. I suppose it was the witches. I do know the author was into Theosophy and thus, the good witch, bad witch concept. The underlying themes of the book is quite interesting.

I remember going to a neighbor’s home to see the first showing of the movie on a color television. The early colored tvs had terrible color, but it was still a thrill.

  7. Kim, it is not surprising that your self-confidence has suffered after losing two jobs and the other issues in your life. I can understand why it irks your husband to see you used and under appreciated. Maybe God is moving you to new understanding of where your true worth lies and your security, too. Perhaps He will move you in a whole new direction. Praying you will move through this difficult time and come out far better for it.

  8. Ah, we’re off to see the wizard. The wonderful wizard of Oz.

Still love the movie — but as a Christian seeing it for the first time, it struck me that there seemed to be a message saying that God (a ‘wizard’ behind a curtain) wasn’t real after all — but that your true hope & strength was within yourself. Maybe it was just me, but I suspect that also is in line with Theosophy (or the metaphysical movement gaining popularity back then). ? Maybe I think too much.

But it’s still a very fun movie. 🙂 Our pastor’s oldest daughter (a teen) had the lead in a community theater performance of the Wizard of Oz recently, she’s done some professional work and is quite serious about acting. And their youngest son can be seen often in a Birdseye eat-your-veggies TV commercial, so funny. They have beautiful kids.

I was having fun with Annie this morning, before I got up, flashing the reflection of my watch from the morning sun onto the walls and ceiling in the bedroom. We are easily amused around here.

And you don’t hear about too many folks being tarred and feathered anymore (mentioned in AJ’s intro). Nicer than beheading them, wouldn’t you say? Although I suspect there were some painful and very unpleasant aspects to that whole process. How do you wash all that off?

Chas, you’d make a good spy.

They now have stickers you can put on your animals’ collars that will tell you, via your smartphone, where they all are at any given moment — and if they’ve left your yard. I may check those out at the pet expo which is coming up for us on April 10.

  11. It took us a few tries, but Annie is now very accepting of a collar. I get those stretchy break-away collars for cats that are safe.

I do have to get it fixed/tightened just right when I put it on, though, otherwise she loses them. The one she’s wearing now has lasted a long time, it’s getting pretty frayed. It once had a cute red-and-black celtic design on it. Now it’s a bunch of tangled red and black threads!

She looks like the poor low-income kitty of the neighborhood.

  13. Catching up (since I seem out of the loop):
-Where are mumsee and Mike going and what surgery is he having?

-I hear the OK came from Andrew Johnson, who didn’t know how to spell and thought “all correct” was “ol korrect”. I doubt that a newspaper in Boston got it started, since that city was probably the best educated in the country in those days. But since there is no knowing how it got started, let each have his/her own idea.

  14. Peter, Mumsee and Mike, along with five out of the Nest, have gone to Boise so that Mike could have his first knee replacement done (neither knee has any cartilage left). The surgery was yesterday, and because the follow-up appointment is in a week, they are staying in Boise for the week. They have left two of the teenagers to take care of the animals, and another with a neighbour. Mumsee indicated she wouldn’t be able to come on here until they returned, so it could be they have no access to a computer right now.

  15. Cute miniatures – I sympathize with Kathy, as I have my dollhouse which I buy miniatures for every once in a while. I’ve always loved the intricacies of life-size items replicated in a much smaller form. I think many women do – my mother had a miniature rocking chair and wooden chest that sat on the three-legged what-not in the corner of the living room. I always liked dusting that what-not. The elderly friend I had as a child had a shelf of fascinating curiosities at which I would just stand and look. The elderly client I helped for a few months had a similar shelf – she said the tiny things had been her mother’s, brought from England. I let my little niece look at my house under supervision, as I remember how much I loved to be able to look and gently touch such precious items. As another elderly friend used to tell my mother when she worried that we would break some of the friend’s collection, “It’s not worth a child’s tears.”

  16. Peter, can you explain to me the tax 1099 thing-y I’m being asked to fill our to sell on Amazon? I’m sure it’s routine, but I didn’t quite understand it clearly so I’m stuck at that step. Thanks

I’m thinking mumsee & company must have some kind of a cell phone, I wish I’d thought ahead and asked if we could at least get a designated communicator among us …

She has my land line, so just in case I’ll check my messages when I get home (I use it so rarely that it fills up with marketing calls and I’m remiss in checking the messages there very often).

  17. Speaking of taxes, I finally made my tax appointment for this Saturday. Now to find all the “stuff.” Ugh.

And I have to remember to ask for direct deposit to be set up this time, last year I forgot and was waiting for weeks for a check to be mailed out. My guy is kind of old school and didn’t even do filing online until the last few years.

  18. 🙂 I Just e-filed my federal tax.
😦 I will mail my state tax in. They want to charge me $20.00 to e-file. It’s for their advantage and they want me to pay. It isn’t the 20 bucks its the principle of the thing. Just bugs me.
NC will send me a card asking why I didn’t e-file. But they want me to pay postage on the card. I won’t send it back.
😦 I had to cut grass today. I hate the idea of cutting grass in March.

  20. Donna- I didn’t have to fill out a 1099 form for selling on amazon. Must be something new. (I haven’t sold anything on there in several years.)

  21. Peter, I’ll try asking about it on one of their seller forums or see if there’s another way to ask the question — seems to me like it would only apply to stores or in-home businesses expecting to sell a LOT of stuff.

  22. Kim – What I am about to write & share comes from what I am personally learning these days. God has been growing me into a new phase of faith, & it has been painful.

The first thing I’m going to say is that maybe God is letting you feel this lack of self-confidence to lead you into more confidence & trust in Him. (Something I am learning, too, in my own circumstances.)

As I’ve previously mentioned, there is, in the back of my mind, a little fear that we may lose our home if Lee doesn’t get an at least somewhat well-paying job after selling his route. I shared that recently (along with my fears about losing my husband to cancer) with my friend Marilyn, who has been a wise & insightful spiritual mentor to me as well as being a dear friend.

Quite frankly, her reply (this exchange was via email, as we don’t live near each other anymore) thoroughly discouraged & depressed me until Lee & I talked about it, & prayed together. The Holy Spirit has given me a sense of peace since then.

    Here is what she wrote…

“I hurt for you. You are in a very hard place, and it sure feels like the big squeeze is on. BUT God still is in control. YOU have to open your hands and let go of your control. God can either rip things out of your hands or you can freely relinquish them to Him. This includes your basic necessities, your family and your husband.

“God wants NOTHING between you and Him, and this is the only way we ever seem to grasp this lesson. I can positively assure you that God has a better plan than you can ever imagine, but He needs your full attention.

“I KNOW what you are facing, but I KNOW you can trust God to take care of you and Leon and everything.

“So what if you lose everything? Jesus said that our chief concern should be the right living that God requires…Matthew 6:33…and everything else will fall into place.

“God may be getting ready to do a new thing in your life, and He has to remove all the old securities. Leon will live as long as God chooses for him to live. You must come to terms with that, so you can be at peace. …

“My prayer is for you, yes, and Leon. God wants to move you into a new phase of life, and you must start waiting on Him for that. It is a season to lean hard into Jesus.”

After reading that, I interpreted it into “You are going to lose everything so you will trust God more.”

After calming down my spirit, I surrendered anew my home & my husband & everything else to Jesus. It wasn’t easy, it was done with a lot of tears, but it was what I needed to do. It was after that that the peace came.

Of course, I’m not floating on air above it all, I do sometimes let worry creep in on me, but I keep giving it all back to Him. God is our provider & our security.

The funny thing is, I used to believe all this quite strongly, but feel I am being led into a deeper level of trusting. We’re never finished, we’re always being changed & pruned & perfected. And the process often hurts.

Take from this what you think applies.

Much love to you, dear little sister. ❤ You are in my prayers,

  23. A different angle, Kim, from what Karen said: last year my income was the lowest it has been since I graduated from college, and just about 25% of what it had been 12 years before (just before I went freelance). I willingly gave up a job that was (from my perspective) a good-paying job in order to go freelance, but I have earned less in freelance than I expected. Last year was a surprisingly low year, not much better than half the year before (and the year before was hardly spectacular). But I’m not worrying about it, both (1) because I don’t think worry adds anything to the Christian life and (2) because five years ago I wasn’t married, but now I am. I’m content with part-time, minimal-income, work now simply because it isn’t all on me. Because of my husband’s financial situation, it is necessary for me to bring in some income, but I’m not the sole or even primary provider, nor should I be. And yes, our income is well below the national average. I’m OK with that, and plenty rich in other ways. The love of a good man is worth far more than a few thousand a year.

  25. Cheryl, it’s true that worry doesn’t add anything to the Christian life but all tend to do it sometimes anyway. ,

Unless I’m the only one??? Eeek. 😉

  26. Nah—we all do worry sometimes. Just as we are all afraid sometimes. That is why we are told so many times not to do so. It drives me to prayer over and over. Still, we are to encourage each other to think biblically and that includes to learn not to worry and fear. Often our worries are just thinking too far ahead. That is why we are encouraged to take one day at a time.

Chas, you can come live up here and I can pretty much guarantee no lawn mowing in March. You will probably need to shovel snow, though. 😉

  27. I just asked husband and he said not a 1099, but maybe a W-9 which is to give your SSN and tax ID # because Amazon has to report sales info to IRS. I did not think a 1099 sounded right , but wanted to verify with the expert.

  28. See, Janice, I really didn’t understand what it all was — so thought it best not to “virtually” sign.

I’ll try to take some more time with it tonight, see if there’s a live chat function where I can ask questions of someone at Amazon. The prompt did ask for my SS number & tax ID, which I was in the process of filling in when I thought maybe I needed to understand some of that better before I signed off on it.

I just want to unload a few books & maybe some other things.
