Prayer Requests 3-23-15

Anyone have something to share?

Psalm 93

¹The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is established, that it cannot be moved.

Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.

  1. We could use prayers here as we work with 5th Arrow (11-year-old developmentally delayed son). We have not taken an aggressive approach to academics up to this point, choosing to put our main focus on teaching him basic life skills. He’s had some academics, of course — he knows how to read, and has rudimentary handwriting skills — but that’s been a small part of his overall education.

We are praising God that his ability to carry on a conversation, cope in a rational manner with unexpected changes in his environment, and other things that were severely deficient in the past are areas in which he is now showing much improvement.

So we feel it is time to up the challenge, now that he is well on his way to overcoming a lot of the major hurdles he once faced.

Unfortunately, he has demonstrated lately, and especially this morning, when I was working with him on math, a lack of a teachable spirit.

This, of course, makes me feel like I waited too long to introduce more formal academics, and now he’s at that age that his older siblings were when they exhibited the most attitude problems. In that respect, he doesn’t seem to be developmentally delayed at all. I did not think he’d be so resistant to instruction at this age — we tried to read the cues about when to introduce what with him, but it looks as if we misjudged.

Prayers for wisdom, please, as we make decisions on how to approach his overall education and training at this point. Thank you so much.

  2. Karen, yes, we have tried that — 3rd Arrow (17-year-old daughter) has worked with him some, and there has been some resistance on his part, but not as much as what I had with him today. Generally speaking, she does seem to have more success with him than I do, as far as his attitude goes. I want to make sure, though, that she does not become the only one who ever works with him. I don’t want it to be her full responsibility, and I’m concerned about the possibility we could end up in a situation where he only cooperates with one person of his choosing (if even one).

In the big picture, we as his parents need to have his heart. If he obeys a sibling, but not his parents, then letting his sister take over (as effective as she may be in that capacity) might temporarily fix the educational issue, while potentially creating a further hindrance to healing the parent-child relationship, which is at the core of the issue.

If we do get to a point where he is pretty consistently doing as we say when my husband or I work with him, then I think delegating some teaching duties to a sibling is a great thing for all. But I think now I delegated too early, and today especially I saw the fruit of that, which wasn’t what I had hoped.

  3. That’s right, Karen, and especially when the problem is a parent-child issue. People before things, IMO — relationships take precedence over academics.

Hubby called home tonight from work, as he always does, and asked how the day went. I mentioned to him some of what went on with our son, and he had some suggestions of things we could try as we proceed from here. I feel hopeful that everything will work out. It’s good to have my husband’s support in this venture. Good for me and good for son.

Thanks again for all the prayers.

  4. It’s Tuesday where I am. Please remember Jill in your prayers–full transfusion today in hopes of being awake for C-section day after Easter, and of course the big one, other than delivery safety– that Jace will not have hemophilia.

Bad weather for us tomorrow in Venice, really, rain the rest of the trip driving into Slovenia and then over the Alps. Prayers for safety for us and a couple of windows of non-rain to move luggage around in Venice. Trivial. Pray for Jill and, of course, Mike, first.
