Good Morning!

Today is the last day of Winter. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Today’s photos are from Cheryl.

Tomorrow we have 3 things happening. I’m not sure of the exact times, so I’m posting this today so those interested won’t miss anything. As you know, tomorrow is the Spring Equinox, but there are two other rare celestial events occurring as well, a total solar eclipse, and a new super moon. I plan on having my camera out and will hopefully see something.

Here’s the link for more info, from ACCUWeather.com

On this day in 1628 The Massachusetts colony was founded by Englishmen.

In 1687 French explorer La Salle was murdered by his own men while searching for the mouth of the Mississippi River, in the Gulf of Mexico.

In 1822 the city of Boston, MA, was incorporated.

In 1915 Pluto was photographed for the first time. However, it was not known at the time.

And in 1945 about 800 people were killed as Japanese kamikaze planes attacked the U.S. carrier Franklin off Japan.

  1. Where is everyone?
I took time to read Aj’s link and still got here first.
That is an instructive link. Logic told me that the earth rotated a little over 1000 mph (25,000 mile circumference in 24 hrs.), but I didn’t know it’s speed around the sun was about 67, mph.
And that is an interesting graphic showing the shadow.

    Well worth seeing. Thanx Aj.

  2. Good morning from Georgia where it’s raining again. Husband said the rain is knocking the flowers off the Birthday Tree before it even got all the blooms out. He said this has been the strangest year we’ve seen with it. I agreed.

Bosley knocked over the bathroom trash can and has been hanging out with her new “treasures” this morning. I don’t really want to see what has so engaged her attention, but will have to soon. If Miss Bosley prefers trash to cuddling with me, well, we know what that says about her! She’s a Black and White Trash Lady. Just as I posted that she hopped up into my lap trying to redeem herself. She does not want to be labeled.

  3. I have a lot to do, but the rain makes me less motivated. I saw that there are power outages in the county where our office is located. I hope husband has power since corporate sales tax reports are due tomorrow in addition to all the tax preparation appointments.

  4. I think Chas left a few zeroes off the speed of the Earth around the sun. 67 MPH is about the speed I drive to work. The Earth’s speed is 67,000 MPH. It would take several lifetimes for the Earth to get around the sun at 67 MPH.

  5. Good Morning Everyone. Like AJ, I have several announcements.
    1. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Ladies, please, I beg of you, go to a nice department store at least twice a year an have the Make-up Lady give you a make-over. It is preferable to do this at the “free gift deal” time so that when you pay $20 for the over priced lipstick you will get more for your money. This is an invaluable service so that you will not cause people to stare at you as I did this morning on my commute. I passed a woman at an intersection. She was stopped and had her window down. She was a larger woman with pale skin but all I could see on her face were two HUGE black dots. Not a good look.

  6. Kim, as you know, I never ever go near the make up counter and never ever pay twenty dollars or any other dollars for lipstick. People can stare all they want. They always stare. I give them something different to talk about.

That is a cryptic statement kim. do you mean that all you could see was her eyes, or had she been wounded somehow?

  8. Well, our new septic system is on hold, waiting for the guy to get up here. We snaked it the other day and it appeared somebody had been flushing banana peels. That is better than the glasses little guy tried to flush years ago, but still not a good idea. Hopefully, it will get resolved quickly and without too much trouble. One of the boys is out digging up the septic tank as we speak.

  9. She could not have looked as bad as the middle aged mom I recently saw in her tight leggings, which were white and black striped. She looked like a zebra without a tail from the waist down.

We have falling snow. We did have some rain the other day. We are way short of moisture, so I will not complain. Fire season is coming quickly. So far the bear have stayed out of our yard. The deer can be hard on the bird feeder though.

  10. Oh, mumsee. I remember when one of my SIL was so upset. One or two of the grandchildren filled the whole toilet with toys. They tried to flush it, but it wouldn’t work. Good thing.

  11. Hahaha.

Lipstick, septic systems and bad cats. Just another Thursday morning on the blog.

I have a busy day, already made my first call to a source to set up a time to talk later about 1 of the 2 (at least) stories I’m doing today. He was on his way into LA for a meeting and I’m covering Harbor Commission this morning. But, thanks to technology, I can watch it via live stream on the port’s website, sitting here in my sweats and moccasins with my hair still wet from the shower. 🙂

  12. Kim, sorry to hear about Mama Ruth’s fall. Hopefully a minor setback. Otherwise, it sounds like they have her stabilized?

Annie is resting this morning as she spent part of last night being busy walking all over me in bed. Cats.

    On today’s topics:

I wear very little mascara, generally no eyeliner (sometimes I’ll dab a light tight-lining pencil in there). Just some soft brown shadow and the eyes are good to go. 🙂

No toys or banana peels in my toilet. The plumbing in the house seems to all be working, although there’s a drip-drip-drip in the bathtub/shower (which also drains a little slowly again).

And there are no bears in my front yard, last I checked.

    Or snow.

But we may get a chance of some little sprinkles today.

  13. Good Morning….have been difficulty with the internet….could it be the six inches of fresh heavy wet snow on the receiver? It is so amazingly beautiful here in the forest this morning…it is just like an Ansel Adams photo….black and white everywhere and the snow continues to fall 🙂

  14. Makeup for me is foundation and usually Burt’s Bees lip balm or a touch of lipstick for something special.

Talking things in toilets…son once dropped a large conch shell in ours. The plumber had to pound it with a super size auger to break it up and try to get it out. We may still have bits of it in there. It did a number on the toilet bowl though with permanent scratch marks to always remind us to not drop large conch shells in there.

  15. Foundation (it’s a whole lot better & more natural — with sunscreen & moisturizers added — than it used to be in my mom’s era, thankfully) & concealer! Yay. Best friends, the older we get, I’m afraid …

Port meeting over with, now it’s on to writing like a speed demon.

  16. Lol, Janice. The funniest story I ever heard was my dad telling us how he lost his eyeglasses in the toilet. This was on the way back from getting new ones! He forgot they were in his front pocket and was on an automatic flush toilet. Not good.

That story is almost as good as the one where he had his dentures in the front pocket and lost them when jumping over a ditch of water. He drove over 60 miles before realizing they were gone. He drove all the way back and found them in the ditch in spite of high grass.

My dad was always good for a laugh. He knew how to tell a good story.

  17. I had to dig up a septic tank once. In winter. With a deadline. Of course my husband was out to sea.

    And it started to snow.

And I didn’t know what a septic tank looked like.

    I did have a map.

The boys 2,4, got out their Tonka trucks to help. We had uncovered the top of the entire tank by the time the pump guys arrived.

They were impressed. “Takes a Navy wife.”

I was proud but even happier when the facilities worked again.

And have never had to dig up another one, thank you very much.

  18. Today we went to a papyrus museum in Siracuse and my husband continues to amaze me by his driving skill.

We got a parking ticket, however, and have no idea how to handle that with an Italian rental car . . .

  19. When I received my inheritance from my father it included 4 or 5 plumber’s snakes in various sizes, some HUGE plumber’s wrenches and a few other things.
He had owned rental property and I grew up on a septic system. Our second house had sewer but continually backed up. I once laughed that if I ever wrote my memoirs the title would be:
At All My Major Milestones the Sewer Backed Up. I can identify raw sewage from at least a mile away. If I ever take a sniff and tell you that you have plumbing issues TRUST me. 😉

  20. Poor Mouse,

She is not happy about this whole dog thing. She’s been hiding upstairs since Belle showed, except for a couple recon missions. Every time she hears the dog’s tags, she runs for Liz’s room. 😦

At least she has food and water and a litter box upstairs too. Oh well, only 3 more days kitty. And the other cat could care less, but is taking advantage of the newly granted upstairs free range thing. We have a half door that keeps her down because my wife doesn’t like the cats in the bedrooms, (but it doesn’t deter Mouse). They’ve both been up there all day sleeping on Liz’s bed. 🙂

  21. Mascara and cover stick so that I don’t frighten the children. 🙂

When my son was about 18 months old, he got up to go potty about midnight. When he came back to the bedroom, his socks were wet. I didn’t think much of it, learning to aim and all, and was just happy he had taken himself to the bathroom, took off his socks, and put him back into bed About 1:30, my husband wakes me and asks where the snake is. Those are not words you want to hear in the middle of the night. I got up to assist him. The toilet was plugged. The snake would not go down. It could not be plunged. I baled out the water, and we unbolted the toilet. It became obvious that the problem was in the neck of the bowl. You could not see the plug from the top or the bottom. We tried several different items to try to reach the problem. No success. It occurred to me that my plastic egg spatula had the same curve in it’s handle that the toilet had. My hand was smaller, so I stuck it in from the bottom and pushed. It started to move. A huge, hard packed wad of toilet paper appeared in the bowl. My husband grabbed this and pulled. It was almost 8 solid inches of TP. Right then, the spatula part broke off of the handle, leaving the handle in the neck of the toilet, unreachable from either end. I just started laughing. My hubby had been doing all of this with his bathrobe and cowboy boots on. (he thought there might be a water on the floor issue). He failed to see the humor in the situation. We changed out the wax ring, and as we turned the bowl back over, out slid the spatula handle. All was well.

  22. Well, the swan-with-reflection photo is one I’ve wanted all my life. I’ve hardly ever seen a swan except from a distance on someone’s pond. These two were at the state park. I was getting photos of a pair of Canada geese (which are truly everywhere, and no big deal, but it was a pretty pose) and my husband alerted me to the presence of sandhill cranes (which we’d only seen once before). I shot the cranes and then they moved on and my husband moved ahead while I went back and shot the geese. Then I started to move back down the path, but suddenly there was a pair of mute swans (which I’ve never seen in the wild). They were too far off the path for me to get them (a lot of brush between me and them), but as we left later, the swans were right off the path, and the cranes were practically right behind them, so I got photos of both species.

Besides, we’d gotten to hear the loud calls of the cranes earlier, which was an amazing thing to hear. (They were in very tall grass and only my husband could see them then; he’s nine inches taller than I.) He also saw wild turkeys, which I’ve seen plenty of times anyway but never in that park, but I was off trying to see the cranes and I missed the turkeys.

  23. Cheryl once again you captured such beauty in the swans….the curvature of their long necks making almost a separated heart is stunning.
rk65 I am still chuckling over your telling of the middle of the night potty caper!
    Makeup…gotta have it…I’m one of those girls…. 🙂
The snow has melted quickly on our roads and huge clumps of snow have fallen from the tree tops causing Fly to jump a foot off the floor when she hears it bang onto the deck or roof top….it has begun to snow lightly once again and it is getting very foggy out there…tomorrow Spring is supposed to come in like a lamb 🙂

  24. Oh Chas, I actually did think of more than one meaning to shooting the geese. I wish people would shoot them. I’m sure they are good eating, and they are just everywhere. It’s hard to get photos of zoo animals at our zoo, for example, without getting geese in the photo. Nothing ruins the “look of Africa” when one gets a photo of zebras and wildebeest like having half a dozen Canada geese in the picture too. Indiana has a lot of water, and geese just love us.

  25. Mama Ruth went back to the nursing home this afternoon. Her youngest daughter and I had a very frank conversation in which she told me that her mother was ready to die. I was relieved because I have had the same thoughts about her that I had before my grandfather and my father died….they started about 6 months before they died.
Two weeks ago she told her older daughter that she was ready to go. S told her it was OK if that is what she wanted.
I asked R if I could put together a party of all the Rainbow Girls across the state that loved her. We discussed her birthday/Mother’s day, but I told R I really didn’t think we had that much time so we are planning something for April. When I contacted a few of the “girls” ( we are all far from girls now) it all came together. We will do a Reunion/Tea Honoring Mama Ruth on either April 11th or 18th. R and I both agreed that we would rather have everyone come see her while she can enjoy it than attend her funeral…as macabre as that sounds.
The nursing home has two rooms we can use and they offered to prepare the food. We would rather take it in. The offered to make the punch. We may let them. One of the “girls” plays the piano and flute beautifully. She will play. Another has gobs of china and silver we will use. It is all coming togehter.
Now my prayer is that she be in good enough health to enjoy her party and see all of her “girls”.
I lost my birth mother in 2009. You hardly hear me speak of her. Theis is the mother that I will lose that will devastate me.
Please join me in praying for her from now until Mother’s Day. She is the mother of my heart. Right now she is enjoying telling everyone about me. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and the most embarrassing things about all the terrible things my mother did, but it’s all OK. I know I have to let her go, but I want everyone she influenced to be able to show her how much they loved her before she does.
I have no doubt that heaven will welcome her with rejoicing when she decides to go.

  26. Happily, the septic system is all taken care of and showers were had by all. Well, not the little folk, they still take baths.

We left husband at home and went to a baseball game. First time we have left him unattended in weeks but he was able to get up on his crutches without help for the first time today. He was napping. I don’t think he missed us. It was nice to watch son play baseball but a bit frustrating that eight year old snagged some lady’s granola bar and he and the seven year old were eating garbage under the stands. I made them come back up and sit with me. Seems like they could just play nicely for a few minutes….

  27. KIm, Elvera felt that way about Geraldine (Gerry). Elvera’s mother died when she was nine and Gerry is the one who raised her. Her dad married again, but it wasn’t the same.
It sounds like it is working out well.
When Elvera moved to Columbia, she stayed at Gerry’s until she settled into an apartment with two other girls.
