Our Daily Thread 3-13-15

Good Morning!

It’s Friday!!!

And it’s the 13th! 🙄

For some reason that’s supposed to scare people or something. I say if they really wanted to make it scary, they would have made it Monday the 13th. 😯

I’m sorry, but Monday’s are just way scarier….

On this day in 0607 the 12th recorded passage of Halley’s Comet occurred.

In 1777 the U.S. Congress ordered its European envoys to appeal to high-ranking foreign officers to send troops to reinforce the American army.

In 1852 The New York “Lantern” newspaper published the first “Uncle Sam cartoon.”

In 1877 Chester Greenwood patented the earmuff.

And in 1974 an embargo imposed by Arab oil-producing countries was lifted.

  1. The flowers are nice since is is dark and dreary here. Rain, rain, go away, come again another day —as long as it isn’t a Saturday or Sunday because that is when Kim will have time to play.

  2. Good morning! It is rainy here, also. Considering the pollen that is escalating, rain is preferable. But it means more waiting for the Birthday Tree to bloom.

Yes, Jo, and, also, Michelle, get around quite a bit earning frequent flyer miles.

Part of what I do for Christian Library International is to send out weekly prayer letters provided to me by the ministry. I try to pray for the five I am responsible for as I address envelopes.

I got new LED light bulbs for some fixtures. Last night I was putting one into the hallway fixture when the whole fixture (with bulb securely in place) dropped dangling from the wiring. Then I hurt my leg when getting off the stool. Thank goodness Miss Boz is being a leg warmer this morning. I am also thankful for thick sweatpants that protect from kneading paws.

I have to work on my writing assignment today. The hardest part is always narrowing down my ideas to the essence of what I will write about.

  3. Good Morning….oh those flowers are a welcomed sight to behold….
Our snow is melting fast around here…the grandkid’s snowman lost his head yesterday and he is slimming down quite nicely 🙂

  4. I have no one to blame but myself. I knew what I was getting into when I went back to work for Guy. He is jerking me around on paying me. My stomach is in knots. He wants to pay me hourly type wages under 40hours, but he doesn’t want to pay overtime for over 40 hours. He needs me to plan to work 44 hours a week including Saturday but wants to stay under a certain amount.
I could cry if I would allow myself.
I feel like I don’t have a choice…I’ve been fired twice in the last two years.

  5. Kim, that pretty much stinks. 😦

Well, it’s Friday, another week sped by somehow … And we’re getting high temperatures this weekend that will be 20 degrees above normal for this time of year, so it’ll be a hot couple of days ahead. And just in time for all those poor runners in the L.A. Marathon (Sunday morning).

    Wish it would rain.

I liked the quote of the day — I was just thinking if we think we’re having fun now, just wait until the next generation in our now completely confused and rudderless culture is born and raised & takes over. 🙄

But then I immediately think to myself, ah, “But God …”

  6. …..and just last night I opened my mouth to tell something to BG and my father spoke, “I won’t live to see it but ….”

If I only had a penny for each time he said those words to me. 😉

  7. Really fast, why don’t people know this verse: “A workman is worthy of his hire.”

He knows he’s got you, so negotiate.

I understand you only have a set amount, but I need more to live on or I will have to find another job. So, if you can only give me this much, how much can you give me as perk? Pay my gas bill? All my real estate fees? My phone bill? How about some health care? Can you give me gift cards every month for my favorite restaurant? Work with me, what have you got?

I can’t live on what you’re offering. You’ve had trouble keeping help. You’re going to lose me, to, if I can’t afford to work here.

Some suggestions. The rest of you can brainstorm. I have to go.

  8. I did it again; I tried to help my mother with the cleaning and ended up being awake half the night with asthma problems due to dust. Now my lungs feel sore and inflamed. Also, it looks as if my small job is coming to an end, I still haven’t heard back from the school where I applied, and I’m having trouble contacting the regulating body about my nursing license. There, all my rants are over early.
On the good side, my mother, although still in a lot of pain, is benefiting from being able to take walks again; my parents are seeing some ease in financial worries (thanks in large part to help from their other children); and I know I can trust God for the future.

  9. For one of the employees at work who needs it, we pay for her inclusion on our Sam’s card. She might have to pick up something there for the office and she can use it for personal purchases. That is a perk. Also pay for classes for employees to attend. Maybe buy accessories for your car if it is used for transporting potential buyers around. Michelle has the right approach on this.

  10. Chas, I remember in 1976 learning to sing all the patriotic songs for a school program to celebrate the Bicentennial. I wore a calico dress and a sun bonnet and rode into chapel on my broomstick and sock horse. I think America was still great when Reagan was President, but looking back I am not so sure. I regret that I won’t be turning over a great country to my child(ren) and grandchildren.

  11. K, I keep thinking I should try and see if a mask helps; but I always forget when I’m in town to buy some. I used a mask when I was painting my room (and kept the window open and used more environmentally friendly paint) and I have much trouble. The trouble is, I wasn’t really planning to get in the dust – I was just going through old papers, magazines, and books – but dust lurks everywhere.

  12. It’s hard to get a long view of present day-recent history from our limited vantage point, but the trends we’re seeing now had their beginnings many decades ago.

It will be easier for historians to someday plot the cultural changes and their impacts on the nation as a whole.

And when I say I need to remember “But God … ” — that also includes the possibility that many cultural trends in the west & U.S. in particular will continue to go downhill.

We need always to remember that God is sovereign & is up to something with all of this — in the end, it all will glorify him and will work together to bring (spiritual) good to His people. In our time & space we see much of this only through a glass darkly.

  13. I’m doing a stranded sea lion story today, which is kind of an annual occurrence out here anymore — but this year it’s worse.

  14. Donna,

I was just reading about that. 😦

    http://beforeitsnews.com/environment/2015/03/hundreds-of-sick-dying-sea-lion-pups-are-washing-up-on-californias-shores-2523078.html

“Dr. Andrew Trites has been studying marine mammals in the North Pacific for 30 years, and he’s never seen anything like what’s happening in California.

“This will probably be the highest number of stranded sea lion pups on record,” he told ThinkProgress on Friday. “The last three years have been particularly high, and it looks as though that this year, 2015, will the highest ever recorded.”

More than 1,450 baby sea lions have washed up on California beaches this year, a huge number that’s been putting animal rescue centers in a frenzy. The phenomenon has been reported widely, but was particularly magnified in a Thursday New York Times story that delved into specifics about the animals’ plight.

“Many are sick with pneumonia, their throaty barks muted to rasping coughs,” the story, written by Times correspondent Jack Healy, reads. “Parasites have swarmed their digestive systems. Some are so tired that they cannot scamper away when rescuers approach them with nets and towels and heft them into large pet carriers.””

  15. I got a new Kindle in the mail yesterday. My old one, which I had ordered used, is finally showing it’s age. It’s a 2nd generation model that had been dropped at one time, and now there are lines showing on the screen blocking part of it. It lasted me two years, so I can’t complain. The new one (7th generation) was on sale at Amazon for $20 off ($59). But the sale ended the day after I ordered mine.

  16. I think the problem in our country started with FDR. His programs gave people the idea that they were due benefits from the government.
I don’ know who said it, but one of our founders is said to have commented.: Our country will stand until people discover that they can write checks to themselves from the treasury”. Or some such.

  17. Peter, I got a new camera in the mail earlier this week. I had to send the “old” one in for repair, covered under warranty. Rather than repairing it, they sent me a refurbished one. Now I’m almost afraid to touch it: Will this one break/wear out too?

  18. I’ve bought a refurbished canon point-and-shoot maybe 10 years ago, it worked well (but then it was much more of a basic style). But the refurbished items should be just as good as new, and they have the same warranties. Seems like they should have given you a new one, though.
