On this day in 1574 France began the 5th holy war against the Huguenots.

In 1792 The Humane Society of Massachusetts was incorporated. 

In 1836 the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, TX.

In 1861 Texas became the 7th state to secede from the Union. 

And in 1945 the 28th Regiment of the Fifth Marine Division of the U.S. Marines reached the top of Mount Suribachi. A famous photograph of these Marines raising the American flag was taken. It’s this one.

  1. Good morning! I was up early fixing lunch for husband. Bosley had a play session with paper balls. I never tire of seeing her go out for a pass and leap high in the air to try to catch it. Also this morning she leaped to the top of the door in my son’s bedroom…just because, well, just because she could! I am hoping she will be tired from all the activity. Probably not.

  4. Chas, on Saturday I commented to myself that my legs felt as tired from walking through the grocery store as they use to feel from walking several miles. The mind has to generate consolation prizes for those failing physical capabilities. People always need to focus on what they can do instead of what they can’t do. I know you know this. 🙂 I am mostly telling myself.

  6. It is cold, wet, and Monday. Ugh.
    Who knew Mr. P has to watch all the awards shows. While I couldn’t care less…I do have to say that as I was falling asleep last nigh “Lady” Gaga (NOT one of my favorites) did a medley from The Sound of Music. I had to sit back up and watch and listen! Who knew? Even Julie Andrews when she came out to present whatever award it was seemed to be impressed.

  8. Good freezing your nose off Monday morning!! It is 0….windchill -15 ….we got a foot of snow this weekend…it is so beautiful in the forest. The roads are in horrid shape…all the schools are having a snow day…but Paul has to brave the roads to get to work…
    Cheryl there were two tiny birds who scooted up the side of our house last night and snuggled together in the corner part of the eave over the family room window…they looked absolutely frozen…they were still there when we called it a night, but were gone this morning…I’ve never seen birds do something like that before….

  9. Sad story about Ira, Kim. I think I told you that one of Elvera’s brothers was on Iwo Jima. He never talked about it. But he went to a reunion every year. All her brothers are gone now.

  12. We watched only a few minutes of the Oscars and it happened to include Lady Gaga. I was impressed. She did a beautiful job. It is always difficult to do songs so much identified with the original singer. It must have been even more difficult when that singer is waiting in the wings.

    I did think the tattoos did nothing for the beautiful dress, however.

    I used to watch the Oscars when I was in my 20s and 30s, back in the days when I saw nearly all the films that were nominated, but no more. I don’t go to the movies often and the awards shows strike me as an excuse for Hollywood types to get together to say how beautiful and talented they are. In case the rest of us hadn’t noticed. 😉

    I found a 2013 Nicholas Cage movie for free on Amazon and watched that last night, followed by Downton Abbey. But a couple of our newspaper colleagues were at the awards, I saw some early tweets from them, retweeted one.

    We had some much-needed rain yesterday, though not a lot and I’m hoping there will be more to come. There were a couple short downpours, interspersed with light rain, but this morning the sun is out.

    My kitchen floor is filled with muddy paw prints, as usual after it rains.

  15. Didn’t watch. I knew they would snub American Sniper (and they did, I mean best sound editing, really?) so why bother?

    So a 400 million movie isn’t as good as one that made 38 million? Moviegoers told them with their wallets which picture was best.

    Not to say Birdman wasn’t good, it was. Just not Best Picture good.

    At a minimum AS should have taken Best Actor, but didn’t. That went to a movie about Stephen Hawking that far fewer people have seen or even heard of.

    It was just another demonstration of how out of touch Hollywood is with average America. They pick a best actor movie with 34 million total box office to over 400 million and counting for American Sniper.

    You tell me which actor and picture the public liked best.

    The public loved it, liberal Hollywood elitists? Not so much….

  17. Is Lady Gaga a man or a woman?

    I didn’t watch the Academy Awards and I generally avoid movies made after 1960, but I can endorse Boyhood. It is autobiographical by the director and presents a good view of what it is like to grow up in modern urban Texas, in a broken home, with way too much alcohol around and no spiritual guidance. All church youth workers would benefit from seeing this movie.

    I’ve had my cold for the winter. I’m staying out of the dog park.

  20. I liked the Stephen Hawking film and avoided American Sniper because I just can’t tolerate violence and most R rated movies anymore.

    In other news, I hope Karen’s got the snow off her roof. A friend in Boston is reporting $150K+ damage to the roof because of ice dams! Yikes, and no roofers will even come out to the house for a better estimate because the weather continues so bad. 😦

    NM is beautiful, but so very dry, flat and brown . . .

    I have weeded out over twenty items from my closet. Halfway there…next to do the drawers! Onward…

    I am very behind on reading and reviewing. Got to get in high gear on that. Also need to get back in the church library and do more weeding there. And over to friend’s apartment for more weeding. I could just get some bottles of Roundup!

    Friends with two kittens will probably take the third, a girl sibling, that finally got captured. These three were in a feral delivery situation. Guess what color the hard to catch girl kitten is? Black and white (wonderof wonders,of course, like Miss Bosley). Black and white=high energy and evasive when they choose to be.

  24. AJ – I understand what you mean about the elites vs. the viewing public, but I don’t agree that the public always knows best. There are movies we consider wonderful classics today (like It’s a Wonderful Life) that tanked at the box office.

    I’ve looked at the winners from the People’s Choice Awards a time or two, & saw that they were mostly whoever or whatever was popular, but not necessarily what I would consider high quality.

    However, I do agree with you that the Hollywood elites often choose the movies that hammer home politically correct themes over better movies.

    Today I saw a letter in the mailbag section from “Janice G on wng.org” — in the November 29 issue. 🙂 I had seen another one, too, last week maybe, from Michelle, with her city and state listed.

    Fun to see familiar names in there. 🙂

  30. The Boys in the Boat is the story of the 1936 men’s crew competition in Berlin. Fantastic story telling told mostly through the life of a very poor young man. Riveting–a story about boat racing? I just loved it and came away glad.

    It’s so rare for me to find a well-written, compelling story, that I want to share the pure joy of it! 🙂

    THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT

    The year is 2024 and the United States has just elected the first woman as President of the United States, and she is from Alabama!

    A few days after the election, the president-elect calls her father in Alabama and asks, “So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?”

    “I don’t think so. It’s a long drive; your mom isn’t as young as she used to be, we’ll have the dog with us, and my arthritis is acting up in my knee.”

    “Don’t worry about it, Dad, I’ll send Air Force One to pick you up and take you home, and a limousine will pick you up at your door,” she said.

    “I don’t know. Everybody will be so fancy. What would your mother wear?”

    “Oh,Dad,” she replied, “I’ll make sure she has a wonderful gown custom-made by one of the best designers in N.Y.”

    “Honey, Dad complained, “You know we can’t eat those rich foods you and your friends like to eat.”

    The President-elect responded, “Don’t worry, Dad. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in D.C. And I’ll ensure your meals are salt-free.”

    So her parents reluctantly agreed, and on Jan. 20, 2024 arrived to see their daughter sworn in as President of the United States. The parents of the new President are seated in the front row.

    The President’s dad sees that a Senator is sitting next to him and leans over and whispers, “You see that woman up there with her hand on the Bible, becoming President of the United States?

    “The Senator whispered in reply, “Yes, sir, I sure do.”

    Dad says proudly, “Her brother played football for The University of Alabama.”

  33. We had an ice day in Old Fort Worth today. After 18 holes of Sleet Golf (you play with just a 2-iron and an orange or yellow ball), my son and I turned into furniture movers for my wife. As such we got to listen to her music, and it wasn’t bad:

  37. Peter, The Dad just thought playing football for Alabama was more important than being the first female president of the US. The leader of the free world is already a woman: Angela Merkel.

  38. What a gorgeous day out here today — blue skies, big, fat, billowy white clouds, a crisp breeze, very cool temperatures …

    I was sent out today to cover the news conference celebrating the port labor agreement, lots of politicians — but being on the waterfront with that view of the sky & ships in the harbor was worth it.
