Good Morning!

On this day in 1783 Sweden recognized the independence of the United States.

In 1861 Samuel Goodale patented the moving picture peep show machine.

In 1931 Maxine Dunlap became the first woman licensed as a glider pilot.

And in 1999 Mike Tyson was sentenced to a year in jail for assaulting two people after a car accident on August 31, 1998.

  1. Good morning! The birds are lively this morning which makes for a lively Miss Bosley.

My leg is having some arthritis problems since I really pushed it in helping my friend two days ago.

Yesterday was a big day for church activities with the monthly WMU gathering in the morning and the Bible study/prayer meeting in the evening.

  2. I keep getting e-mails wanting me to be on Facebook and LinkedIn, but I don’t do either.
And I don’t twit. Nor text. This is it.
And it’s enough. I can’t understand how people can keep up with those other things.

  3. Good Morning….we are going to have a short respite from winter…the weather guy even said “70’s” for tomorrow…yay!!
I don’t understand twitter…I had to sign up for an account to follow Paul on his 100 mil ultra last year….but I just don’t understand how it works 🙂

  4. BG has a severe sinus infection. She wanted her mommy to take her to the doctor yesterday.
Moving back into commercial, I had to laugh yesterday in the pouring, cold rain as I was standing at the back of a vacant office building in East NoWhere trying to get in to do an inspection. I pretty much looked like a cold, drowned rat. 😉

Lots of chatter about the “new” Harper Lee book coming out. Supposedly it was the original book that To Kill A Mockingbird was based on. This morning I posted on Michelle’s FB post that it would probably be written from a revisionist historical viewpoint where the adult Scout sees all of Atticus’ faults and is now probably living in San Francisco either as a Lesbian or living with the Black Panthers—perhaps both.

The town and people of Monroeville has been quite protective of their Miss Harper. This just smacks of something not being right if you ask me.

  5. Tales from Financial Peace University. Guess who wants to take my Secret Stash and pay off one of his credit cards? He is completely missing the point about the Emergency/Security Fund. It is over a thousand dollars but it is no where near 3-6 months living expenses. Which is what this class says to do first—have a few months living expenses BEFORE you start working on the Debt Snowball.
I am keeping my mouth shut for the most part in class because with the knowledge I have from using FP in 2008-2009 to keep from filing bankruptcy and from taking Crown Ministries—I ought not to need this class, but some of us are just Sllloooowwww learners. Of course I do have to admit that when Mr P and I got married I handed everything to him and turned into one of “those” women who called home to ask him how much money I had in my account and would he please transfer some into it.

  6. It will be interesting, Kim, to see what is in the book.

For some, Twitter is a part of work, especially for those involved with writing. A platform is needed of followers who may potentially become your readers if that like what they see of you on social media. So that is why people make time for it in some cases.

Twitter is easy and posts are very limited in words. I am using it to post a photo each day with a few words of encouragement for Christians and seekers. I also read some of the tweets of others when I check in and then if I think others might enjoy something I will retweet it to my followers. It can take a few minutes daily or weekly to do Twitter or you could spend your whole 24/7 keeping up with the tweets.

  7. I rode a horse, but only through a corner. Until I saw where the guide was taking us and insisted upon being returned. It was odd watching guards with submachine guns on camels all over the place.

  8. Further adventures in finances. My iPhone quit working so I switched back to an Android almost two weeks ago. George made BG save to buy a used iPhone for herself for Christmas. Yesterday as we stopped at the pharmacy to get her meds she dropped her phone and shattered the screen. Once again, afraid to tell her father. Today I took my old phone to the “fixit place” to see if they could take the screen off of my old one and put it on hers. YES! And I am getting money BACK. I have never had that experience before.

  9. You are probably correct, Chas, but I did not see one available and they kept wanting me to ride a camel, which I did not want to do. As it was, I was wearing a dress so one of the guides had to remove his turban to give me leg covering. No telling what message that was sending.

  10. Those shattered screens are frightening to see, but they can be replaced.

I tried calling home once to get more money transferred into my account. It didn’t work for me.

So I’m halfway through my first week back at work and had to write 3.5 stories yesterday and work 3 hours overtime, didn’t leave until 9 p.m.

Saturday will be welcome, although busy, too — Cowboy and Tess need to go in for rabies boosters first thing in the morning and I am planning to get the smog test done on the Jeep so I can pay my registration a little early this year. And then, I embark on a major spring cleaning in the house. There comes a time …

But it feels very good not to be sick anymore. The cough is finally waning (although my voice still sounds pretty wacky). I still feel somewhat tired, but I think I’m getting some energy back.

  11. Ah, Google+. We all had to sign up for that a few years ago but I haven’t been back since, I’m afraid.

As Chas noted, there are only so many sites you can reasonably maintain or keep up with. So I pretty much forgo Instagram/Pinterest/Google+ in lieu of the basics: FB & Twitter. Those two sites seem to be the most prolific in terms of our news contacts.

  12. I would have enjoyed Twitter more in my younger days when I was a bit of a bomb thrower while posting comments. Now, I just think it’s stupid. It assumes, like FB and the rest, that anyone cares what you think. There’s the rub, most don’t. So why bother?

And people are rude, nasty, and cuss way too much. Plus, they refuse to police their stupidest and foulest twits. And they know it, but don’t do much about it. If this guy gets his way, maybe I’ll reconsider later.

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/4/7982099/twitter-ceo-sent-memo-taking-personal-responsibility-for-the

“Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is taking personal responsibility for his platform’s chronic problems with harassment and abuse, telling employees that he is embarrassed for the company’s failures and would soon be taking stronger action to eliminate trolls. He said problems with trolls are driving away the company’s users. “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years,” Costolo wrote in an internal memo obtained by The Verge. “It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.”

“Costolo’s comments came in response to a question on an internal forum about a recent story by Lindy West, a frequent target of harassment on Twitter. Among other things, West’s tormentors created a Twitter account for her then recently-deceased father and made cruel comments about her on the service; West recently shared her story on This American Life and the Guardian.”

  13. Persuation by Jane Austin is free for Kindle @Amazon.

Donna, I need to take Miss Bosley in for her one-year old shots, and I need to get the emissions sticker for the car that is in my husband’s name since he has a March birthday. East coast or West, some things are the same no matter where you live. With emissions, it more a big city vs:small town or country difference that determines if you have to pay the extra money to put things into the air.

  14. As Janice indicated, writers are forced to do it all and somehow find time to write. Since we don’t have cable TV, I follow news on Twitter. I’ve encountered a number of interesting articles, which I then retweet (so I have something), post on FB, or just think about. It’s been good.

It’s also a way for me to connect with people who might be interested in Oswald Chambers–which is part of what I need to sell this book.

I got involved in Pinterest while doing research for the book, and that has driven traffic in my direction, too. It’s very handy to have all the photos I need to think about for the book in one place.

But it’s so very odd. Last night I googled “Zeitoun camp YMCA WWI,” and looked at images. There were some I needed to see, but the rest of the google images were from MY website. Here were my Nicaragua pictures, my grandfather in uniform, even an adorable grandchild. Very odd!

And I was the first five or six links with that google search.

    Very odd.

(I have never lived in or seen snow like that. Yo soy pura Californio! And except for the US Army, I have never lived more than 25 miles from the ocean.)

  16. Oh. I have never lived more than 25 miles from the water either. Even when I was in college.

I can’t explain it but I get claustrophobic if I can’t see the water when I want. If I haven’t crested a hill to see the Bay in a week or two I have to go look. It comforts me just to know it is there.

  17. I am new to Twitter as far as being on it daily. I have not encountered any of what was mentioned in Peter’s post. I follow overtly Christian sites and I post images and comments in general to give God glory. It has been a Christian encouragement site for the most part for me. 🙂 I follow a few who are probably not Christian who are cat loving people. It would be better to have more control over who becomes your follower. I know some have protected sites, but I have not looked into that. It probably is a premium account with a charge for the privacy.

  18. So was that a REAL mouse??

Twitter: Good links to be found there, efficient for news gatherers and spreaders. I rarely post opinion on Twitter (mainly because all our posts automatically scroll on the newspaper’s website; kind of frustrating sometimes because I’d love to post more Christian-related content).

But we’re expected to tweet out stories and info about stories we’re working on.

I just copied one of michelle’s tweets on FB (where I can pinpoint my audiences — I have a special group that gets Christian content as it would definitely not be appreciated by many of my FB friends) .

It can get so confusing. 🙂

I used to feel that way about mountains. But after a few years of living in the “flat” lands, I got over it. Now when we travel to mountainous areas I anticipate the first site of something other than a radio tower that is taller than 200 feet. above my level.

Janice, I am on twitter and do follow you, but I rarely tweet – only retweet.

I was thinking an idea for your humorous article could be Miss Bosley telling us about her day and the silly things her people do.

Haven’t been to sleep yet, though I went down a bit after 9:30. Had a bad bout of vertigo during the day, which we managed to arrest, but it left me exhausted. But I’m supposed to sleep propped up for a night or two, so I’m in the recliner, and I really just can’t sleep that way.

But I’m going to go back to try again. Anyone who sees this, you’re welcome to pray for me.
