    Happy Birthday, Kim!!! (Mine is in exactly one month…I’ll be 44!)…Kim: I hope your trip is going well so far. Enjoy that tiny bundle from heaven!

    Becca-boo and Connie left early today to go to breakfast and pick up Connie’s great niece and nephew for school (they all go to the same school as Becca) b/c it was their mom who was in the terrible car accident the day after Christmas. It’s a miracle they are even alive as the 15 year old was pronounced dead at the scene…LifeFlight came and transported them to our premier trauma hospital….They somehow revived fifteen year old and she’s fine! No brain damage or anything…A true Christmas miracle!

  9. Good Morning Everyone. I have been awake for a while getting my birthday snuggles from Miss Em. She is back down for a nap. She really is a good baby. I told her she might just be my second best birthday present. (I found out on January 8th that I would have BG–18 years ago!)
    I will take this week in Austin with a baby as a birthday present any time.
    I have already talked to my stepmother this morning. We will have lunch one day next week.

  12. What is so funny about that sign is that it is posted next to the main entrance to the Welcome Center/ Restroom building! The second part is that I am terrified of snakes. Just imagine really having to use the facilities and a snake sunning itself in your way!
    I also found it humorous that west Louisiana has discovered gambling. Every gas station/convenience store off the interstate had “the BEST Poker Room in Louisiana!” The other signs advertised “Adult Superstore”. Talk about your truck stop being full service! Gas, Subway/McDonalds, gambling, and “adult” entertainment. If it weren’t so sad it would be funny.
    Part of that sentence reminds me, what happened to the restaurants that were attached to truck stops when I was a child? You could always get a good breakfast there any time of day.
    Sorry Ann, but the drive from Orange to Houston wasn’t that entertaining. The drive from Houston to Austin was beautiful. As many times as I have been to Texas I had never seen any hills. The route we took had rolling hills, small towns, and small ranches. I almost made myself dizzy trying to see both sides of the highway!
    We are in downtown Austin, so yesterday we walked around Guadalupe Street and through the UT campus. There are two museums a block or two over. I would love to make it to them while I am here. Perhaps Miss Em will be cooperative or I can leave her with the grandpa. (It’s funny, she won’t take a bottle from me, but she will from her grampy pa. Of course that makes him feel superior-lol! I am careful to let him continue to think that…I’m sly like that. 😉

    OK, I am off to read my Bible plan and perhaps go downstairs to the gym. Miss Em has a lunch date with her Mommy at noon and we decided to go to her today rather than have her come back to the room. The conference center has been quite accommodating and have set aside a small classroom for Connie to pump or nurse. My how times have changed!

  13. Happy birthday, Kim!

    It was dusk as I got the deer in the header photo, and they were in “the back 40,” so getting bright color was impossible. Still, I rarely see a buck and a doe together, and have never before been able to photograph both.

    I think we had nine does and youngsters (nine total deer, I’m not sure how many of them half-grown fawns), but when the buck came out, the does ran back into the trees. The one nearest him is the only one that was still in the clearing more than a minute or two.

    This is my fourth winter here, though, and the first one that I have seen bucks in that back field, though does and fawns are still far more frequent.

  14. Kim: I spent five years of my life in Austin–first in undergrad from 90-93, then returned for grad school from ’95-’97. It’s a great town with lots of good restaurants…I hope you enjoy your time there.

    And the deer are beautiful, such a peaceful scene. …

    My dad named the back section of our rather long backyard when I was growing up “the North 40.” He grew up on an Iowa farm and it was always kind of a joke with my parents. But it stuck. We always called that section “the North 40” until my mom died and I eventually sold the house.

    I’m hitting the freeway early this morning to get Tess to the vet, she’s still hopping around not using her front right paw, so it’s time to get it checked out. Probably just a sprain, but maybe there are some anti-inflammatories or something he can provide that will help it heal.

    We don’t have an appointment so they usually say to get there when they open at 8 and then they can usually shift you in quickly for an impromptu check.

    I may have to leave her there if they want to run a test or X-ray that’ll take a while, I need to get to work — work is in between my house and the vet’s, so lots of driving going on today.

    And I got (slightly) rear-ended yesterday at a stop light but no damage. I took the guy’s license plate # anyway, but I definitely just cannot see anything, no dent, scratch, nothing, the tail gate opens and closes fine. Although I noticed last night that my left tail light is out again, the mechanic fixed that last time … have no idea if it’s related to the “tap/bump” I got or not, but unlikely I think. …

  22. A tail light going out is usually about a bad bulb. fixing that is trivial. However, if it is the same light that went out recently, something else is might be going on. In which case, a mechanic may be required. I would just change the bulb and watch it.

  23. A sign on a nearby see in my neighborhood reads something like, “Drive as if Your Childen Live Here.” Hmmm…if someone is having a bad day with theIr children? I also thought that another sign might read, “Watch Your Children and Keep Them Off the Street.” When son was young, a neighborhood friend with a son the same age as mine told me she and a neighbor were swapping sitting with theI r children. While the other neighbor was “watching” the children, someone else called and told her the children were sitting on the curb by the road unattended. The parents were inside and unattentive. Also a neighbor dad was doing yard work when I was driving by and his very young son was by the street sort of behind a telephone pole and it scared me to think what could have happened. Putting a sign up against drivers does not relieve parents from being diligent in watching after their children.

    I think there are fewer truck stops with restaurants because of all the fast food places. There is one near us that is real popular because it has great food. People from the city about 5 miles away drive their for breakfast a lot.

  30. I don’t know if the rest of you saw it but there was very recently a coup attempt in the Gambia. I only know it because the attemptee was a resident of Austin and it was on the local news last night and included an interview with the current leader of the country who staged a coup in 1994.
    I wonder what Joanne’s and Roscuro’s thoughts are on this?

  31. Bulbs previously replaced, mechanic said new unit needed that holds the bulbs and wires, got that done a couple months ago — apparently this is a problem characteristic of Jeeps

  33. Kim, there have been other coup attempts in former years. The rule of thumb is don’t get involved in politics, keep your head down, and nothing should happen to you. It is best not to even discuss politics.

    The differences between Matthew and Luke come form the differences in men and their sources of information. Matthew was a Jew and was one of the twelve, called, not among the first, but early in the ministry of Christ. He was an eye witness, and was interested in the legal heratige of The Christ, who was a son of David and legal heir to the throne. Most of what he tells is what he saw.
    Luke is a different case. He was a physician, and a gentile. Someone once asked how Luke knew such details about the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. I said, “Mary told him.” Luke 1:1-4. Also, consider this. Paul picked Luke up at Troas (Acts 16:10) on the second journer. They went to Philippi. Paul evidently left Luke at Philippi. (16:40). Paul picked Luke up again in Philippi (Acts 20:6-7) on the third journey. Paul took Luke and others to Jerusalem where Paul got into trouble. Paul was in prison in Caeserea for at least two years, (24:27) Probably longer. Luke was in Jerusalem all this time. No indication that he stayed in Caeserea. Then, Luke went to Rome with Paul (Acts 27:1).
    I infer all of this from Luke’s use of the personal pronoun. It makes lots of sense to me. I would have done exactly what Luke appears to have done. Luke likely didn’t write all he learned from Mary, Mary Magdalene and many of the others. Mary wouold likely have been in her mid fifties at the time. You know she wanted to talk about her child.

    Beautiful Christmas miracle, Ann. We are also grateful for the miracle of my husband’s cousin’s recovery after her cardiac arrest several weeks ago.

    Thanks for the Kol Nidrei, AJ. I played that in college, as a transcription for viola. I hope I have some time to sit down and play it later tonight. I dug out my viola yesterday after probably several months of not playing it, and would like to play it more regularly again. This music today gives me motivation to do just that.

    Now if it would just give me the time to do that!

  41. OK Miss Emmy is officially the best baby on earth. Her Mommy fed her about 12:30 and she has been asleep since then—through being put in the stroller, the car seat, the stroller through the waterfront park, back in the car seat, to the stroller, through Grandpa and Mimi eating a late lunch/early dinner back to the car seat and back to the hotel. We are meeting the Mommy at 5 for Emmy’s dinner and so Mommy can go out to dinner with people she needs to network with. Right now she is still asleep! Have I mentioned this is a breast baby??????
    BG would have had us all hopping.

  44. Unfortunately Mom has to stay awake for classes during the day. This morning I had Grandpa and Em on the same nap schedule, so I’m thinking he will be able to stay awake tonight.
    We’ve tried everything to keep her awake, but just as you can’t get a fussy baby to sleep you can’t keep a baby who wants to sleep, awake.

    I have made an amazing discovery and am on a mission to let everyone know. Babies get hiccups which leads to spit up. They now make this wonderful concoction called Gripe Drops. A couple of drops and the hiccups are gone. I am thinks we might need to bottle this stuff for adults.

    We didn’t make the museums today, but we are going to try tomorrow.

  48. Actually, we are up to nearly the fifties during the day. Just a bit more and if the rain stopped falling and the clouds left and it was day time and the wind stopped, we would have a beautiful California day.

  51. I think it hit 80 today. Had to run the A/C in the Jeep.

    Tess’ foot seems to have healed itself, of course. As of this morning she was still limping & hopping around — until I leashed her up to get into the car for the trip to the vet. She suddenly sprang back, dashed down the front steps with little problem — and I almost took her back into the house … But figured since we’d gone to the trouble of getting up early, and she has been limping for going on 3 days now, I might as well get it checked out.

    Vet says probably a sprain or strain, we have some meds, he said it can take up to 3 weeks to fully heal.

    Dogs.
