On this day in 1520 Martin Luther publicly burned the papal edict. The papacy demanded that he recant or face excommunication. Luther refused and was formally expelled from the church in January 1521. 

In 1817 Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the 20th American state. 

In 1898 a treaty was signed in Paris that officially ended the Spanish-American War. 

And in 1958 the first domestic passenger jet flight took place in the U.S. when 111 passengers flew from New York to Miami on a National Airlines Boeing 707.

  3. I loved the TV series of Star Trek but I never could get into the movies.

    The next two weeks are going to be extremely busy here at work on top of Christmas. I am far from having everything done.

  5. Good day for doing all that is left to do, or at least some of what is left to do.

    We have a large shopping bag from the Coach outlet store. I had stored our door wreath in it. Last night Miss Bosley found it empty on our love seat so she got inside and rolled off the love seat (still inside the bag). The bag ended up upside down over Miss Bosley who began to walk or try to walk around so it looked like we had a bag moving around the room on its own. She tried to escape it, but her feet were tangled in the string handles on the bag. Finally she got loose from the captivity of the Coach shopping bag. My husband said, “The only thing better than a Coach bag is a Coach bag.”(shopping bag) Somethings that are priceless just can’t be bought with a VISA card. I don’ typically shop at Coach, but we found a graduation gift there.

  6. I was reading a long article in Newsmax>/i> about the treatment of veterans. At the end, it listed ten charities that “look out for our Service Personnel”. I have never heard of many, such as Air Warrior Courage Foundation, #1, with a financial health ration of 99.78/100 and a transparency rating of 100/100. I occasionally send money to #10, DAV with a financial health rating of 88.30/100 and a transparency rating of 96/100.
    Conspicuously missing is the Wounded Warrior Foundation which is much advertised on Television. It could be that they spend most of their money on advertising.

  13. Anyone catch the NBC/Tom Brokaw hourlong interview/special with Angelina Jolie on “Unbroken” last night?

    I’m seeing some complaints online from Christians upset at the news that the conversion portion of Louie’s story is not part of the main narrative (it’s an after-element, the film technically ends with his liberation and the ‘rest’ of his story is told in what’s called “tiles” — photos — ending the film).

    I’m withholding judgment, but guess I’ll share (in some degree) a wish that the specifically Christian nature of what happened to Louie would have been more specifically relayed in the film version.

    On the other hand … it’s not ignored (though perhaps more universalized as a “God” experience generally) and, when I interviewed Louie’s son several week ago, he indicated that Louie and the family were happy with the way the faith aspect was handled, that it “worked,” in effect. Louie was adamant that that part of the story be included.

    I appreciate the dilemma for filmmakers (the son had told me early on that Jolie was struggling with how to handle that aspect of Louie’s story as she wanted to make a popular film that would appeal to young people and a broad audience).

    One would hardly expect to include a 40-minute Billy Graham sermon in a commercial film release. And a powerful Christian message can be relayed in much more subtle ways. We’ll see if there’s enough of a seed and foreshadowing left of the the “rest” of the story to get the underlying message across.

    Again, I’m guessing I’ll walk away wishing they’d done more with it, but …

    It may have been one of those cases where the Christians involved (Louie & his family) needed to be “wise as serpents” in order to accomplish the greater good of getting the story made into what’s destined to be a hugely popular film. And it could send more people back to the book, as well, which I thought did a fair and thorough job of outlining Louie’s conversion and how it completely changed the rest of his life.

    We can pray that God will use it to draw people to Himself, whether the folks who helped make the film or those who see it in the theaters and on TV in the coming years and decades.

  15. Chas, Karen Carpenter was the drummer (and lead singer, of course) for the Carpenters. They went to the same state university I did, but they were there several years ahead of me. There’s now a significant building named for them on campus, though.

  19. I think I just talked our receptionist into home schooling her children!
    Her son is very bright and has a teacher who is causing him to hate school. Her daughter? Well if you are homeschooling one you can home school two.
    I even took her hand and twisted her arm behind her back.

  20. Lol, Kim. That was a song we were supposed to have in our wedding ceremony. Ended up only having one song at the beginning of the service. Long story.

    I had that album, but had several missing after sharing an apartment. I also lost a couple of wonderful fifties and sixties album mixes to a babysitter who borrowed them. I doubt she even knows where they are today.

  21. Gate is finished — looks and works great.

    But … It took longer (and thus cost more in labor) than anticipated. 😦 I guess that’s where hiring a professional might have made more sense, I’m guessing the job should have/could have gotten done in a day instead of 3. But it probably would have cost about the same, who knows.

    He’s a nice guy and he appreciated the work & extra cash (I tipped on top of the upped price as aligning the latch especially was more complicated than he anticipated) while learning/honing some of his handy-work skills.

    And now I have a beautiful new redwood gate that’s sturdy and secure (and is several inches taller than the old one was, which is an added plus).

  23. It was popular to hate the Carpenters at some point. But I have to say, she had a beautiful voice & so many of their songs in their early 1970s heyday served as “sound tracks,” in essence, during my freshman/sophomore college years.

  24. I watched the Unbroken special last night. I wish Brokaw had shown more of the interview with Louie and less of Jolie. I know, the special was about the making of the movie, but all that about Jolie and Pitt’s relationship could have been edited or not used.

  25. The film is obviously getting heavily promoted at this point (and NBC has that Universal link). I see it now everywhere on TV and on billboards where I live. There’s a special pre-release screening next week at the theaters here in Louie’s home town (same city in which our newspaper is located); I’m still debating whether to cover it personally, I want to go but am technically on vacation next week …. So if I don’t do it, another reporter will get to go.

    The film producer and Louie’s family will be there for an audience Q&A — and the audience will include many of Louie’s hometown friends and old neighbors, it was sponsored as a fundraiser for the historical society.

  29. They set me free! I spent half a day waiting waiting waiting….three judges decided they didn’t need us….I was not called by the other three…about 100 of us were told we could leave…yes! 🙂
    Donna I am in the hopes that once movie goers see the movie….they will purchase the book…then they will get the “rest of the story”!
    My Mom’s dog Toby died this morning….I was in the jury room and couldn’t call, but I am now home and am praying to find the strength to call….Toby was my Dad’s dog…he was 16 years old…Maltese…Mom is taking it very hard…prayers appreciated…she sees Toby as that “last link” to Dad for some reason.

  37. I hereby nominate my husband for “male shopper of the decade.” He came home from the store with a receipt stating: “Amount saved: $11.35. Percentage saved: 96%”

    Of course, the rest of the story is that I “set him up” yesterday.

    I stopped into CVS yesterday to see if they had his favorite cookies on sale. They did. Five-ounce boxes were $1.00 each (normally something like $2.60, and the ten-ounce boxes are usually more than $5). Further, they had some of my favorite kinds of chocolate on sale and also featuring a $1 off store coupon with purchase. So, I came home with a sheaf of coupons: $1.50 off $5 of cookies, $1.50 off $5 of candy, three $1 store-credit coupons, and more.

    My husband went in and bought five boxes of cookies, $1 each, and used the three $1 credits and the $1.50 coupon, bringing his total down to fifty cents for five boxes. He didn’t buy anything else, so his percentage of discount was excellent.

    We’re a good team, even when we shop separately. 🙂 The price and percentage off are on the fridge, circled.

    It reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”. I know it is some other bird, though.

    And I think Janice’s gremlins are the ones in her phone.

  40. Apparently the cookies were originally $2.37 each. Five for fifty cents means he got them for ten cents a box. Even his mom can rarely do that well. Of course, he couldn’t have done it without me going in there yesterday. . . .

  43. Hi, all. My mom went to the doctor yesterday (my surgeon BIL), thinking she was going to need a suspected spider bite lanced. Tim thought she had a severe infection, one reaching into the bone. A second surgeon concurred and thought she needed emergency surgery. They started her on IV antibiotics, did a local and heavily sedated her. My sister was with her at the hospital. Once they opened up her right index finger, they discovered no infection, just terrible gout (her joint had ruptured). She’d been in a lot of pain since last Wednesday. They cleaned it out and sewed her up and sent her home. She has a follow-up appointment tomorrow because she has extremely thin skin and they’re worried about an infection developing. Of course, the moment she got home from the hospital (my sister drove her home and stayed until she went to bed at eight), she poured a generous glass of bourbon… BIL and other doctor who regularly treats gout, say she has it in both big toes. Her feet are quite numb, so at least she’s not experiencing any pain from it. I emailed some articles re: things to eat/avoid for gout, per my mom’s request (she’s computer illiterate–I email things to my dad, he prints them out and gives them to her). Of course, way up on the no-no list is alcohol… Prayers, please.

  45. I heard about an article I submitted a long time back. They want me to shorten it to a filler of 250 words. That is good news to me. It is a positive direction.
    I also heard from a really good friend who wants to get together for lunch on Friday (my birthday). I am very happy about that! 🙂

    I still don’t know about my 2015 health insurance. 😦

  47. Hey, the stupid bird landed 5 ft away and started yellin’ at me. I told him to shut up and took his picture. 🙂

    It was huge. Like taller than a foot. Crow size, but not a crow. Big blackbird maybe? They were all over, but he was huge.

    And when exactly is Janice’s birthday? The real one, not when Facebook says it is. 🙂

    Janice, hope that health insurance issue gets resolved. I’m wondering what my out-of-pocket bills will look like for my physical yesterday.

    I covered a bridge lighting tonight, very festive, LA mayor was there — but about a dozen black and whites sped by, sirens blaring, early on, it seems there was a shooting several blocks away. Soon the helicopter arrived & police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect. But it didn’t disrupt the festivities. The bridge looks very pretty.

    Just another night in the city …
