Good Morning!

On this day in 1820 Captain Nathaniel Palmer became the first American to sight the continent of Antarctica.  

In 1883 the U.S. and Canada adopted a system of standard time zones.  

In 1916 Douglas Haig, commander of the British Expeditionary Force in World War I, called off the Battle of the Somme in France. The offensive began on July 1, 1916. 

And in 1985 Joe Theismann (Washington Redskins) broke his leg after being hit by Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants), and it ended Theismann’s 12 year career.

    And Jo, of course. It may be hot there.

  4. It’s 32 degrees in the Sunny South, but the wind whips right through you, plus it’s damp.
    I am not a big sweet eater, but I do like about half a slice of Key Lime Pie and I used to make something called Banana Split Pie that was pretty good. Mr. P loves sweets, so that works well for me. He orders dessert and I get a bite or two of it and am done.

    So, anyone here keeping up with the Twelve Brides of Christmas series? Which ones have you read? What do you think of them?

  5. The boys will be popping in to the Boise airport this morning after their sunny days in LA. Hope they brought their coats. Then they have the five hour drive home. As long as they are home by half an hour after sunset because the driver is not licensed to drive at night, they should be fine.

  6. Daughter in Boise said they got a lot more snow than us. We got a quarter inch, they got six inches. People in Boise ride bikes a lot, even in the snow.

  7. One of the guys in my husband’s jam group decided he was singing O Holy Night for a show they will be doing. I shuddered. I love the song, but it is a song that not everyone can do well. I guess it sounded ok last night when they were doing it together. Hopefully, it will sound ok on the night of the show. It is not the kind of song they normally do.

  8. Key Lime pie and pumpkin pie are favorites. Does Boston Creme pie count, too? Pecan pie is fine although maybe a bit too rich. I love cobblers, peach, blueberry, and apple served with ice cream. When I was a child, and most of the time I brought my lunch from home, i always wanted some of the cherry pie the cafeteria served. My mom started making some cakes to send a slice or two (to share) with my bag lunch as I got older because I complained that just because my brother had diabetes it should not mean I could not have a dessert with my lunch. When I started sharing slices of her good cakes my number of friends at the cafeteria tables increased.

  9. It’s cold here and we have a couple inches of snow that came down Sunday. Everyone is remarking that it’s more like January than November. Ice on the road and snow blown over the road is my husband’s report from town, and temperatures in the teens with wind chills below zero. Misten keeps wanting to go outside for a few minutes, eat snow, and then come back in for a few minutes. She’s being discouraged from that revolving-door idea.

  10. I have a lot of favorite pies. First my unfavorites: mincemeat, strawberry rhubarb, and sweet potato. Those are varieties I will probably never eat again, unless it’s to be polite. Apple pie almost fits in that category–I eat it only if it’s the only dessert and I want dessert; in my opinion it is quite forgettable. Every pie not named above could qualify as a “favorite.”

    I especially enjoy blueberry, peach, a good chocolate cream, pumpkin with lots of whipped cream, or turtle.

    It’s 58 in my house, so it’s probably around 60+ outside by now (8 a.m.) . But I had to pull on a sweatshirt at some point during the night last night. I did get the flannel sheets on the bed so that helped.

    We’re getting our “cold” Santa Anas — very dry again, and very windy.

    I’ve been assigned to do the “Thanksgiving” story for a number of the papers but was given very little direction. Projects editor just said something like “why we’re grateful in this country,” “family, friends,” “gathering,” I can do a 10-things kind of list if I want — “don’t over-report it.” And it’s due Wednesday. But this week I’m still tied up on the long-term unsolved homicide stories for that same editor that I need to turn in by Friday.

    Meanwhile, one of our very few reporters is stuck on jury duty all week. City editor not happy having to fill papers every day.

    I don’t think I’ve ever had turtle pie though either. That sounds kinda gross……. 😯

    Unless she means the kind with nuts, caramel, and choc., I’d try that…….. 🙂

    QoD: Apple pie is the first choice, followed by pumpkin pie, and then lemon – homemade, of course. I do not like store bought pies of any kind. Most of them taste of chemical flavourings, artificial sweeteners, and synthetic shortenings. My family has a tradition of eating apple pie with cheese, probably from the British custom of eating cheese with dessert – in the words of my great uncle, “Apple pie without cheese, is like a kiss without a squeeze.” 😀 I was master of apple pies in my family, including the meat and apple tortiere which we ate for Christmas; while my youngest sibling could make a mean cream pie of any description – chocolate, banana, coconut, etc.

  14. Rhubarb pie was big in Iowa. But I think they “cut” the tartness by mixing it with some apples, so it was really apple-rhubarb.

    Still remember a neighbor of my grandmother’s who made a rhubarb pie — and when she brought it over to serve, it was covered in ants. She hadn’t noticed. It had been cooling on her windowsill. She just brushed them off. Good as new.

    We never ate turtles though.

  15. The Real, had you been my mother’s child, she wouldn’t have let you get away with not trying rhubarb. Her policy of making us take a ‘Thank you’ portion of any new food or food we didn’t like began when my eldest sibling stated she didn’t like rhubarb pie before she had tried it. My mother made her take a sample and eldest sibling ended up liking rhubarb pie – as do all the rest of us 😉

  16. We LOVE Pirates of Penzance–in fact both my husband and I caught each other singing “O Wandering One” yesterday!

    And we tried to take consolation when the last parent died. “Well, at least if we were kidnapped by the Pirates of Penzance, they’d let us go once they found out we were orphans.”

    We took our teenagers to see it one time in Hawai’i at a fantastic community theater and at the last minute invited the athlete boy next door to join us. He had no idea what he was getting into and was completely stunned at intermission. “That’s it? The whole story?”

    “No, this is just a break between acts. They’ll finish up in about ten minutes.”

    “Oh,” he exclaimed, insight dawning. “You mean, it’s like half-time?”

  17. I prefer apple crisp to pie–I really don’t like crust. When I eat quiche, in fact, I don’t bother with the crust. Too many calories anyway. I DO like Key Lime pie and ate Key Lime yogurt for lunch yesterday!

    36 here when I went to the gym at 5:45. It’s warmer now but they’re tentatively hintly at maybe a tiny bit of drizzle tomorrow. Bring it on! Please!

  18. AJ- Try rhubarb pie buried in whipped topping or ice cream. That’s the only way I eat it. As for the tartness, i think my MIL uses a lot of sugar in hers.

    Funny story: When we got married, we were going to have the gift opening with just the families at my in-laws’ farm after the wedding. So I helped get the place ready by mowing the side yard. There was a weed that looked like rhubarb to me (I couldn’t tell the difference) so I mowed around it. It turned out to be burdock and my brother then used it as part of the car decoration.

I’ve heard recently that it’s actually strawberries that provide the weird taste in strawberry-rhubarb pie, and having tried once to make a mixed-berry pie that included strawberries, I realized that must be true. Nevertheless, I have also has sugared rhubarb, and I don’t like it. The sugar doesn’t penetrate, so you have sweet and you have rhubarb, and it just doesn’t work.

    The crust is one of the good things about pie, and is actually the main reason I do eat apple pie, when I do. (Once every few years.)

    Quiche is another pie that could be on my “never again” list. My college served it sometimes, and I don’t like egg but I tried it one time, and after that I went hungry during meals that it was served. (I’d eat the side dishes, if they served any, but not the quiche.)

    And I won’t eat cheesecake, having tried it numerous times and never yet finding one that is worth eating. One of the girls sometimes asks for it for her birthday, so I get the chocolate sampler pack from a bakery. Last time my husband got it, and he was thoughtful enough to get a small turtle for me (yes, that is the one with caramel and pecans and chocolate); I definitely got the best end of that deal!

  20. Some of the stuff you people are talking about, I never considered as “pie”. Quiche is not a pie to me. Neither is pizza pie, nor turtle. I think of pie is something you have after the chicken and broccoli.

  21. Hello everybody! Popping in here briefly — thought I smelled some pie baking. 😉 And I’ll eat about any kind of pie if it has a gluten-free crust. Did you save a piece for me?

    Hope all is going well with all of you. We’re doing reasonably well getting Thanksgiving arrangements in order for our extended-family gathering here next week.

    My first piano student started last week, and my second one starts next week. Two eight-year-olds, a boy and a girl who are cousins. They both had birthdays within the last week, and you know how excited kids that age can get about birthdays. 🙂 I am enjoying my return to piano teaching!

    It’s 17 degrees right now where I’m at, and, as far as snow goes, one week ago I woke up to about 3 inches of snow on the ground, our first snowfall of the season. That was Tuesday. On Wednesday it snowed a tiny bit more. Thursday, a tiny bit more. Friday, a tiny bit more. Saturday, a measurable amount more (but less than Tuesday). Sunday, no snow during the day, but possibly a little in the dark hours way at the beginning and/or end of the day. Monday, more snow. And today, a tiny bit more.

    With snow predicted for tomorrow… 😉 Merry Thanksgiving and Happy Christmas!

  24. Chas, I don’t think of quiche or pot pie or pizza as “pie,” either. But then, neither do I think of shortbread as a cookie, but my husband loves it. 🙂 But a turtle is either a pie or a cake, and definitely a dessert.

  25. I like most different kinds of pie. I used to make custard pie, since it is a favorite of my husband. Haven’t even thought about that for a long time. Sweets bother him and he would be the only one to eat it.

    French Silk is a favorite at one of the restaurants we frequent. I love wild blueberry or apple. The best pie I ever made was a four berry one. I prefer my own crust and I like to use any extra bits for cinnamon and sugar treats.

    An apple pie with a streusel topping, drizzled with caramel and with ice cream is hard to beat. Hmmm. For some reason I feel hungry.

  26. A beautiful day in Colorado…snow is slowly melting…the black squirrels are enjoying the frozen pumpkins I threw out back 🙂
    I love love love lemon meringue pie…with a nice hot cup of dark coffee….oh man!! 😛 I like pumpkin, cherry (as long as the cherries are montmorency cherries…I had a montmorency cherry tree in town…oh how I miss the bounty of my efforts keeping those birds off of the tree!!) Blackberry pie is good, warmed up with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream…oh wow…I am getting hungry!!

  27. I like sweets too much, but the thought of streusel topping drizzled with caramel and ice cream makes my teeth hurt.

    Our pastor from HI posted on FB that they were down to 71 this morning . . .

    It was dental cleaning day for me today and I had a new, very intense hygienist who lectured me about not flossing enough. I couldn’t help it, I rolled my eyes at one point and she snaps, “I saw that look!”

  29. That’s the truth Chas. They spread out their array of metal picks and other tools, then turn to you, looking through those little miner’s goggles, and say, “So. How is the flossing coming?”

    I mumble something about “hit and miss.”

    “three times a week?”

    “Um, yeah, maybe about that often.”

    “Well let’s see how you’re doing,” she says. It was a very long 40-60 minutes after that (though it seemed longer).

  30. Good link with the Thanksgiving recipes, Donna. I bookmarked it for future reference. And speaking of pie today, I see there was a recipe for salmon pie (from Alaska) that looked good.

    That video at your 2:45 link made me think of something else funny I saw (in my mind, as my husband described something he had seen at a fast food place).

    A customer had ordered drinks, and maybe other things, and was carrying them out of the restaurant when he dropped the drink tray on the floor. The lids popped off, soda spilled out of the cups, and the guy got so mad he gave a swift kick to those cups, sending them flying to the door, ice cubes scattering everywhere! 😀

    Hubby about died tried to hold in his laughter! I don’t think I would have been able to. 😉

  32. It’s only 11:35 here…I was tired around 10:30, but then Scott and I got to talking…and now I’m wide awake. He’s sleeping. It was nice to spend some time talking after being gone for a couple of nights (he’s not much of a phone talker). I’m so glad I had the time with my sister, but it’s nice to be home, too.

    Becca finished her learning differences testing this morning. I get the results on December 2. I am eager to know what he learned. I trust the psychologist doing the testing. We’ve known him for about six years. He is a committed Christian who earned his doctorate at Wheaton. He does a lot of the testing for a neighboring school district and Becca likes him.
