Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 6

Here it is, sports fans. And this week has some really big games involving many top 25 teams facing each other. Maybe someone will get a better score than last week’s 6 correct. So, without further ado (other than reminding you to check the rules found here: https://wanderersviews.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/peters-pack-of-pickled-pigskin-picks-week-5-2/

One change: the deadline this week is Thursday, Oct.2 @ 10:30PM EDT/7:30 PDT, when the tie breaker game is played in Oregon.

So, here are your choices:

1. #6 Texas A&M @ #12 Mississippi State – ESPN says this game and the next have Mississippians hoping they will “showcase a positive image of the state.” Unless the two Mississippi teams lose by huge margins.

2. #3 Alabama @ #11 Ole Miss

3. #14 Stanford @ #9 Notre Dame – I think this is the only top 25 game between teams not in the same conference. Look for a good game.

4. #4 Oklahoma @ #25 TCU – This one may be more exciting than the annual Red River game between Oklahoma and that other team from Texas.

5. Navy @ Air Force – The first battle of the big three military schools. Who will win?

6. Boise State @ Nevada – I have to include this one now that a certain Idahoan has joined the fun.

7. #19 Nebraska @ #10 Michigan State – This one is the big game in the B1G 10 this week.

8. Purdue @ Illinois – This one is the Pillow Fight of the B1G 10. Chas’ alma mater has a good chance of winning this one.

9. Pillow Fight: UMass (0-5) @ Miami, Ohio (0-5) – The real question is, which of these teams can overcome mediocrity?

10. Tie Breaker Arizona @ #2 Oregon – I get to pick the tie breaker this week. I know, my team doesn’t stand a chance.

  1. Okay, I know next-to-nothing about football, & I usually ignore this post, but I decided to throw in some guesses, just to see how well – or poorly – I do.

Texas – because Lee was stationed there for a while when he was in the Air Force, & because Ricky Weaver would want me to. 🙂

Alabama – in honor of our Kim.

Notre Dame – because Lee’s uncle went there.

Oklahoma – because I like the musical.

Air Force – see Texas above.

Go Boise! – in honor of Mumsee.

Michigan – because it is near Wisconsin, where I lived for a while, & graduated from high school.

Purdue – because Chas has mentioned going there. I think. Or am I mistaken on that?

Ohio – because I lived there for several years, during much of my growing up. (Although, I could have gone for UMass, as Lee’s family is from the Boston area.)

Tie breaker: Arizona – in honor of Peter. Score? 27 – 20.

  2. Thanks for the honor, Karen. Arizona pulling off such an upset would make my weekend.

    My picks:
Miss St – I rarely go for a Texas team
Ala – Too easy, i know, but Ole Miss could surprise us.
Stanford – ND is another one of those teams.
    Oklahoma – See above
    GO Navy!
    Boise St.
Michigan St – I have never liked Nebraska. Back in the day they ruled the Big 8 and 12 and seemed to be favored by the refs, especially when Mizzou was about to beat them.
    Purdue
    Miami OH
Oregon 45-14 – Yes, I am being realistic in saying my favorite team cannot possibly beat the #2 team in nation on that team’s home turf.

  7. My first choice was 35-17, but since that was taken and my brain was tired of numbers, I settled on the puny zero. It isn’t a reflection on yout team, but instead speaks of my brain being too tired to think of possible football scores. Zero is a no-brainer. 😉

  8. It’s possible to get any final score but 1 in football. Teams can get 1 point for an point after touchdown, but not just 1 point without anything else.

  9. Mumsee and Karen in the lead! If I have to miss on a pick, that would be the one I would want to miss. I can’t stand the perennially overrated ducklings…

  10. In the interest of not seeming like a hypocrite…I am firmly convinced that my Seminoles are also way overrated this year. I do think that if they run the table they should have the chance to defend their title. but they aren’t playing like a number 1 team…

  11. Well, Mumsee, so far you are in the lead as your tie breaker score was 6, while Karen was 8. Let’s see how you two do the rest of the way. However, if someone else has more correct, that person wins, regardless of the tie breaker.

  12. I know it makes me a sexist pig to say this.
But it seems strange to hear a woman calling a football game.
But the Boilers lead the Illiani 38/27. That’s worth it.

  13. Wow. What a weekend for upsets. Arizona knocks off #2 Oregon on Thursday. Today, #3 Alabama and #4 Oklahoma fell. Because of those upsets, no one will have a score higher than 7 this week. No, anonymous (I think you are kbells), you don’t have zero correct. The lowest score so far is 1. As of now, three people have 5 correct: Chas, Tychicus and Karen, with two games to go. I think we can now say that Karen is the winner, since she is the only one of those three to get the tie breaker, and all three chose the same teams in the remaining games (Boise St vs Nevada and Nebraska vs Michigan St.).

So, Chas, not only did a woman beat us, but she admitted that she usually ignores this post. Beginners luck? We’ll see if she tries again next week.

  14. kbells- Maybe I’ll try that method, too. I think we who follow college football forget that any team can win on any given day, even a 24 point underdog (like Arizona was this week).

  15. 😦 Football is a stupid game!
When you score 38 points, You’re supposed to win!
I think KBells is correct. It’s Obama’s fault.
Is Kbells1 the same Kbells we all know and love (except during football season)?

  16. Final results:
    MSU 48 TAMU 31
    OleMiss 23 Bama 17
    ND 17 Stan 14
    TCU 37 OU 33
    AirForce 30 Navy 21
Boise 51 Nevada 46 (Were they playing basketball?)
    MichSU 27 Neb 22
    Purdue 38 Ill 27
    Miami 42 Umass 41
    Ariz 31 Ore 24

Our results: (All those upsets upset some of our applecarts.)
7 correct: karen, Chas & Tychicus. Karen wins since she is the only one of these to get the tie breaker game winner.
5 correct: Mumsee, IBNO, Janice and Peter L
    4 correct: AJ
    3 correct: kbells
    2 correct: both Weavers

So Karen gets to pick the tie breaker game for this weekend. You can find the schedule here: http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule/_/week/7
