  1. 😦 I ordered a book called Agent Storm for my Kindle from Amazon.
It never was delivered. I ordered it yesterday afternoon, and the website said “Pending” most of the evening until I left it and went to bed.
This morning, they have a bill for $13.98 in my e-mail, presumably that it had been delivered.
    But I don’t have it.
$14.00 is hardly worth the hassle. But something’s wrong and I need to get it fixed.

Agent Storm is supposed to be about an Englishman who converted to Islam and joined al-Qaida. He worked himself into the upper echelons of the organization, but became disillusioned and became an agent for the Brits and CIA.
I want the book. But we don’t have a bookstore in Hendersonville anymore.

  2. I always read the headings of mail in my spam filter before deleting them. Sometimes I get a laugh. This morning, this showed up”

Cwshull, look sexy in your new bikini

Often it is from some woman who is completely awed by me and desperately wants to meet me. Or a warning that I’m missing the delivery of a valuable prize.

  3. Chas, Amazon is amazingly easy and good about refunds and/or fixing something that went wrong with an order. Go to “My Account” and then to “Orders.” It will show up there and to the right there should be several boxes you can click, including tracking an order.

  4. I was going to suggest that, too — make sure the wifi is turned on, it *should* show up — I also usually have to pay up front for kindle (and other) orders, wondering why you’d get a “bill” after the fact?

  5. Thanks everyone. I called the 888 number Donna suggested. I talked to a lady who doesn’t speak English well. We talked about half an hour but couldn’t get it to work. I don’t know what is wrong. I know my WI Fi works because I can use my laptop.
We canceled my order and I’m going to order the book.
I wish we had a bookstore here.
The problem is, it happened once before. It seems that my Kindle doesn’t work anymore.
    But I can’t imagine why.
There is a lady at the H’ville library who works with borrowing books by Kindle. I may take it to her. She speaks good English.

  6. Is the book published by Hachette? This is the danger of Amazon as a monopoly . . .

Did I mention our Stargazer has applied for a job with the dark lord? He’s turned into a “big data guy,” which means he can take complex computer data, run the model and announce something like, “the best color is green.” (Ignorant mother interpretation.)

Anyway, I looked through the packet and the only thing I really liked was they provide elder care benefits. 🙂

Is it fair to suggest manipulating data to put certain books on top?

    Of course not!

  7. Chas, yeah, maybe the issue is with the kindle reception. I mostly use an older iPad as my preferred ‘reader’ (I like the back-lit screen and my old kindle had the earlier dark screen) — so far all the kindle orders out of amazon still seem to get delivered promptly. They automatically go onto my phone as well, under the kindle app.

Hope Stargazer gets the job … But it’s kind of like when I heard that my friend’s 20-something year old daughter just got a job answering customer service phones for the hated LA Department of Water & Power (the most dreaded, inefficient, despised agency operating in all of the city of LA when it comes to its poor customers — all of us — and that’s saying a lot).

And then hearing that her starting pay is more than I currently make after decades in journalism. Yikes.

I really should have gone to work for the government … 😉

  8. Hillary is safe in Italy and doing well. For those who didn’t see her little blog post, let me tell you how the flight went and how God is so very encouraging.

She had two heavy suitcases (70 and 55 pounds), one heavy carry-on and her guitar. If there was a problem, particularly having to go through customs in Amsterdam, she was going to leave the guitar behind.

They get to the entrance of the local little airport and as she lugs these mammoth suitcases in, two men stepped up to help. “Wow, these are heavy! Where are you going?”

“I’m moving to Sicily for a very long time,” she explained.

“Sicilia!” They broke into singing–in Italian.

They wanted to know all about what she was going to do. She explained, while the airline person behind the counter listened. When Hillary got to the front, he waived a number of fees, only charging her $200 in overweight costs, and checked the baggage all the way through to Catania.

Which meant she could take the guitar.

Her whole family was in tears, the Italians still singing, and her heart joyous as she went through security in our tiny airport and caught her plane.

The big KLM flight arrived on time in Amsterdam–very unusual–and with her luggage going straight through, she made her flight to Catania easily. 🙂

(One piece was delayed a day or two).

God is good, her heart is full and now the real work of facing the Satanic forces begins.

Thanks for your prayers. Keep them up!

  9. OK, back to rants & raves ….

    🙂 It’s Saturday

🙂 We got our “profit” sharing checks (first and last ever, no doubt) this week. We were supposed to get a week’s pay extra but that got whittled down to 2 days and, in the end, whittled down further to 1.9 days. But still. It’s the first “raise” we’ve had in years. I’ll take it.

😦 More uncertainty ahead at work with all our newspapers theoretically up for sale (almost 200 of us across the country). I ask you, who — in their right mind — would buy a newspaper these days?

😦 One of our rival papers in the county to the south of us got hit with massive cutbacks and layoffs this past week, more good people out of work.

🙂 God is sovereign over all and He loves his children. What a blessing this is when things seem to be spiraling downward. As we heard in our sermon last week from Rom. 8:32, ” … how will He not … freely give us all things?”

  10. 🙂 Onions chopped for church casserole. I meant to make the casserole last night but didn’t get to it so it’ll be left for tonight, as usual. But if I can get everything chopped beforehand, it goes a lot faster. And I bought enough ingredients to make a “junior” version for me.

  11. 🙂 Good start with my music for the piano show, five relatively short works from five different time periods, by five composers whose last names start with B — Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, and (Melody) Bober (because not all composers are dead men). 😉

😦 Why did I pick anything by Brahms?! (Quite challenging.) Temporary insanity maybe. 😉

🙂 The piano show is two months away — plenty of time to get it sounding musical.

😦 I slept really poorly the night before last, not falling asleep until after 3:00 a.m., waking up a few times, then getting up for the day at 6-something. I slept better last night, but today I am dragging. I wish a good night’s sleep could nullify a bad night just before it, but it seems the tiredness always catches up with a person.

🙂 We did get out of the house and down the road a bit today, and that was refreshing, in a way — taking 5th and 6th Arrows to the library, then to the grocery store.

😦 Prices of food. We bought three items, 2.31 lbs. of ground beef, a bag of gluten-free oats, and a dozen eggs. I handed the cashier a $20 bill and got back 3 cents in change. 😦

🙂 Thankful for food in the house. We never go hungry. God always provides.

  12. 6 Arrows – I find that when I have a bad night’s sleep, the next day is not too-too bad, but the day after that, even with a good night’s sleep, is when it really hits me.

  13. 🙂 Another nice day hanging out with Chrissy (but each of us doing our own thing for much of the time), since R had Forrest. Then Chrissy made pancakes & sausage for dinner when everyone was back home.

  14. Mmmm, pancakes for dinner. I must be hungry.

😦 Wound up ‘working’ a bit today, had to file a short story (but it still required several phone calls) about a hazmat situation that evacuated our soccer fields & shut down one of the town’s main streets.

  15. Karen @ 7:52 — that’s almost always the timing for me, too. First Arrow says the same. He has had frequent shift changes in the past — it wasn’t uncommon for him to work a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd all in the same week, or just 2nds and 3rds while he has day classes — but when he gets a little time off, his tiredness hits him on about the second day after the craziness ends.

  16. 6 Arrows – That kind of scheduling is irresponsible of his employers. Jerking a person’s sleep schedule around like that can be bad for his health, & even dangerous in his driving.

🙂 Our guide was Mantracker’s sidekick on 2 episodes – he had funny stories to tell about Mantracker

😦 My butt is so sore tonight

🙂 Rode a quarter horse mare named Sweet Pea – she was a good horse

😦 Now I have to catch up on the laundry and other Saturday chores that would have normally gotten done today

😦 This working full time sure has thrown a loop into my housework schedule

🙂 But I really love my job

  18. Happy Anniversary, Kare2012 and Mr. 2012! 😉 Or, I guess you said his name is Tim — I’m getting old and couldn’t think of it right off the bat. And I’m glad you’re enjoying your new job, Kare.

Karen O @ 9:29: I should clarify my statement “it wasn’t uncommon for him to work a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd all in the same week…” by saying that it didn’t happen often, either. Something less than semi-regularly but more than rarely. Not sure if that helps. 😉

He’s been working for this chain of convenience stores in our area that is well-known as a good place to work for a lot of reasons. In the five years he’s been there, he’s had two different store managers, first a man, then a woman. The male manager was more likely to move my son around to different shifts, likely due to the fact that son was more flexible in when he could be scheduled. He was finished with school, and did not have a family (meaning spouse and children) like many of his coworkers, so he pretty much took what they gave him as far as shifts because he knew it would be easier for him than it would be for his coworkers who had many more commitments.

The shift-switching, of course, wasn’t always easy, but I think his willingness to be available when they were short-handed at certain times probably contributed to his getting promoted to shift leader status at his store.

And now that he’s going to school again, in the daytime, he mainly gets scheduled for 2nd shift. At first when he started school, they’d have him work 2nds during the week, and 3rds on the weekend, but they have stopped giving him 3rds now, which is good, because it was hard to get used to being awake during the day on weekdays, and during the night on weekends.

But that was a temporary situation, and his work and school schedule is much better in sync now.

  19. 😦 Overheard a snippet of a conversation late today at the dog park in which one of our more liberal friends there was telling someone else that Chick Filet has good food but they don’t believe in allowing women have birth control. The guy he was talking to was shocked, shocked.

    Huh??

Amazing how people exaggerate and completely twist things around.

  20. Okay, not sure if you will understand all this, but I will try.
After the dedication yesterday, they took those of us who were visiting from Ukarumpa to a pastors bush house for a special meal.
We were taken in the back of pickups and parked at the end of his road. There we were greeted by a troop of dancers. They sang and danced and then led the way down the road to his home near the beach. Very large, dense trees there.
We found nice chairs for us in a very large circle surrounded by trees and several bush homes. The ladies kept dancing. At one point they took branches and went around swatting us on the legs as they danced. I guess this is traditional there.
Down on the coast they chew something called buai. It is fine to chew, but if you chew it with lime it becomes a drug and is addictive. It also identifies the chewers by turning their teeth red.
After all the dancers were finished, they kept coming back and handing us the green buai. It is about the size of a small plum or perhaps a walnut. Whenever they gave it to me, I quietly passed it to the person next to me, as I did not want to take any home.
Later on, after the meal, a lady danced over to me and left a whole branch full as a gift in front of me. I was honored, but oh, no! I decided to just leave it there.
When we were getting ready to leave as the pilots had given us a time, an older lady came over to me and said, ‘I like you.’ She then put a handwoven bilum around my neck. This is handmade out of colorful, plastic string. I was honored and reached out to take her hand and thank her. Only a few of us were given bilums.
Then, on the plane coming home, I put my water bottle in the bilum. As I did, I found that the bag had about a dozen buai in it. Oh, no, foiled again.
