  4. Here I am, Jo. but not for long. It’s Monday and regardless of the holiday, I have to go to the Y. And at noon I’m scheduled to go down town to watch the parking lot for the Lions. We charge $5.00/car. We usually raise about $350 that way.

  13. That Ricky Weaver won because he picked A&M. I also picked Oklahoma State over Fl. State just because I didn’t want Florida State to win. It has been a bad football weekend for me.
    But Carolina has Furman on it’s schedule, so it likely won’t be a washout.

  14. Happy non-labor Labor Day!

    Bosley loves the labor of love that allows her to rest in my arms while I read the blog. My body is a bit contorted and almost in a cramped position while Bosley sweetly purrs quite oblivious to the discomfort her bliss requires.

    Mumsee’s thoughts about animals being outside is creeping into my mind about now.

  17. Chas was right. Since everyone else picked South Carolina, the Aggies made the difference. Do a recount. I didn’t miss a game. No tie breaker was needed. Next week: SMU vs North Texas. Thanks for letting me pick.

  21. AJ, I had an unfair advantage. My son is an Aggie. For 8 months, he had been telling me how good the A&M offense was going to be. I confess I didn’t really believe it until I saw it on Thursday.

  22. I saw Spurrier’s half hour show last night. It was recorded right after the game. He didn’t know if the A&M offense was that good or we were that bad. He says he has lots of work to do. But it ain’t over yet.
    The most disappointing thing to most was that it broke the SC 18 game home winning streak.

  23. Good Morning. Janice reminds me that dogs have masters but cats have staff.

    I posted last night that the house I made the offer on has AC vents in the garage and the strips of tacking that show that it was once carpeted. It adds 200sf more to the house and will solve the problem of the 10ft long sofa with the 6ft chaise at the end. As it was only the sofa and a tv would have fit in the living room and someone who shall remain nameless could not give up his sofa.
    In measuring I think the dining room table and the larger china cabinet will fit in the dining room. The more of our furniture I can get in the house the less that will have to go in storage. There is one set of bedroom furniture that will have to be stored.

    I am planning to have a garage sale before we move. The more I sell, the less I will have to move or store. Although as I was cleaning out the attic yesterday I discovered some arrows. Now mind you that no one in this house has a bow, but someone wants one so we found a “treasure” and can’t get rid of the arrows. Someone, and we all know it isn’t me, is a pack rat.

    Oh well. I discovered another author yesterday. I am sure Michelle must know of her. Mary Conneally. The book I read was set in Colorado in 1866. The main character loves to explore caves and found fish fossils. Her excitement was that it would prove the Bible to be true because without Noah’s Flood how did the fish fossils end up in a cave inside a mountain in Colorado?
    I can’t read the second book in the series yet because it isn’t on Kindle Unlimited and right now I can only read FREE books. Not spending and extra dime until we close on this house.

  24. I just sent an email to Mary Conneally three minutes ago–she’s one of the authors in this 12 Brides of Christmas ebook release series I’m involved in this fall. The world gets smaller every single day.

    So interesting about adding on a man cave without adding on anything. I’m thankful this seems to be working out. I guess you don’t have to worry about cars and weather in the south. Are the washer and dryer in there as well?

    My son did NOT go to Saudi Arabia this week–he’s leaving next Sunday. SFO-Frankfurt-Riyadh. That should take him past some scary parts of the world. I didn’t ask him, however, what airline he was flying . . .

  25. Well how fun is that? Please tell her I really enjoyed the first book in the Kincaid series and can’t wait to find out what really happened to Seth but will have to read about Ethan first because whenever there is a series I HAVE to read them in order!
    It really is something to know someone who knows someone. Sure I can read Pat Conroy, Nora Roberts, Robert Ludlum, Sandra Brown, and a whole slew of other authors but I don’t know anyone who knows them!

    At first I was afraid the book was going to be once of those mystical sort of books that everyone is writing right now because the ready was privvy to the thoughts of the madman and I thought it was going to be an “other-worldly” presence. I almost stopped reading it, but am glad I continued.

    Just counted up, we’re going to have 8 children under 7 with us at Thanksgiving. My husband’s whole family except for a brother-in-law and one niece and her family. I’m thinking I’m going to hire a photographer friend to document the chaos. Doesn’t that sound like fun to you?

  27. Yeah, that does sound like fun!

    We’ll have a child with us at Christmas this year–a grand-niece will be about three months old. It’s not the first in her generation on my husband’s side of the family, but the first among those who are with us for Christmas, so it will be my first Christmas as a married woman with a child present. (I spent most Christmases with my sister’s family in the years I lived in Nashville, but as much as they loved me, as a single I still felt a bit like an “outsider” who was allowed to join them since I had no other good options.) Someday in the future, Lord willing, we’ll have grandchildren with us for Christmas.

  29. Well, it’s September now, and I suppose it’s time to start making notes for my Christmas letter. All year I’ve been afraid I’d forget something important, we had so much stuff happening this year. (Our first vacation with the four of us, a college graduation, first family reunion for my side of the family in 15 years, etc.)

  30. So, Chas, did you notice that the summer month with five full weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) also kicks off a long weekend, with Labor Day falling as early in the year as it’s possible to fall?

  36. We took the dogs to the dog park this morning. Amos loves to go. Who knew? Lulabelle loves to run with the other dogs. I was definitely the odd man out. Amos was not happy that I took his seat in the truck. He deigned to scoot over but really didn’t like me trying to buckle my seat belt. 😉

  41. Those of you who homeschool, that link may be of scientific interest. He goes progressively “closer” to the parts of a flower, starting with the whole plant and entire flower, and getting down to microscopic photos of flower parts. It’s beautiful and also interesting.

    I saw Cantinflas today. It was good. I have seen several Mexican movies over the last several years. Their culture is much better than Hollywood’s or New York’s. It looks like I may be able to spend my last years in a Mexican culture and never leave Texas. Governor Perry, Close some other border.

  44. Interesting thing just happened. I have been feeling a bit down in trying to decide what to do about a few things. Part of the trouble relates to trust issues with people. Anyway, I was sitting on the edge of my bed looking down at the carpet. A big pour down had just begun, and it was looking dark out the front windows. I was talking to God mostly about confusion when a small spot of light appeared on the carpet where I was looking down. The spot got a tad bit bigger and much brighter. The light was coming through the edge of the side window blind and put the spot there just when I needed to feel God’s presence. I still don’t know what to do, but He let me know He will light the way.

    One time husband and I went to a Wendy’s, and it was raining outside one window, but not the other. This was sort of like that. 🙂 God is good.

    I did do the 911 prayer for Israel today that was suggested by Anne Graham Lotz. It was about one hour long. Draw close to God and He will draw close to you.

  45. One of the things I am mulling over is that I have been asked to be the Church Treasurer. I totally did not see that one coming. I have not even been on the Finance commitee. Then there is the situation that my husband is Assistant Treasurer at his church. I have asked for a job description and said I would pray about it. In one sense I feel honored, but I don’t feel certainty about it. At one point many years ago I was asked to be Treasurer at what is now my husband’s church but I declined.

  48. The John Piper quote that Donna shared earlier – “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast.” Proverbs 12:10. It’s who he is, down to his toes. – was timely.

    Lee & I knew we were going to have a discussion about our Heidi later in the afternoon, & I read that to him. There are a couple issues with Heidi that we are discussing & working on. One big issue is her allergies, which cause her to itch terribly. The vet has told us, & we noticed this ourselves, that the allergies get worse each year. (The body develops a sensitivity that recognized the allergens sooner in the season, & reacts more strongly against them.)

    Heidi is currently on a new medication called Apoquel, which supposedly cuts off the itch signal in the brain. What we have found is that, for her, it only takes a thin edge off the itching. IOW, she is still very itchy, but that is a bit better than being extremely itchy.

    That might be “good enough”, except for the fact that, with tax, it is over $90 a month. We cannot afford that.

    So it looks like we will be putting Heidi on prednisone indefinitely. For the past few years, the vet & we have put off going that route, as prednisone can cause some serious health problems. But we have tried most of the allergy meds (the one we didn’t try yet was very expensive & hard to find), & none of them have worked for her. 😦

    Fortunately, prednisone is much cheaper than the Apoquel she is on now.

  49. I always get stuck being the secretary of whatever group I am in. Now my boss wants me to write up the minutes to each sales meeting and email them to the agents. Well in my opinion if they didn’t care enough to show up for the meeting they certainly aren’t going to open an email and read my recap.
    I wrote them up the first month and he sent them to the marketing director and had her make a “template” and pretty them up. Now I have to type it in that format every month.
    The career coach I mentioned last fall keeps telling me what a great writer I am and that I should do more with it. Nope, it has been beat out of me. I haven’t written anything yet that hasn’t been changed 12 ways from Sunday. Anything I send out has to go to the boss and marketing to make sure we are “speaking with the same voice”.

  50. One issue with a dog being on prednisone is that it makes them very thirsty, which leads to lots of accidents in the house. The current med she’s on has a similar, though not quite as bad, effect. As it is, though, she is peeing in one room almost every night, even though Lee puts her out before he leaves (around 12:45a.m.).

    During the day, I make sure she goes out enough times, but at night…

    I’ve thought of putting “puppy pads” in that area of that room.

  51. My Baby Girl wants me to go homecoming dress shopping with her!!!!! Last year she went with a friend and her mother and I didn’t even know until she was back with a dress. Hurt my feelings. This year she is wanting me to go with her. I may just be the $$$$ signs to buy the dress but she asked!!!!!

  55. Karen, just a thought and it may not apply. We have never had skin allergies in any of our dogs. Ever. But the first time we got a dog, we were told by her owner, a German woman whe was a dog breeder over there, to never wash a dog as it will cause their skin to get very itchy as it loses the natural oils and protections. We never bathe a dog. They get brushed though. And the only issue we have ever had with a dog needing any medication was thyroid for one quite large dog.

  56. Kim, pretty much wherever a female dog urinates it kills the grass. Not sure why it doesn’t work that way with male dogs . . . and it may be it isn’t that way with all females or is also that way with some males. But in my experience, when a female dog is around the lawn has round patches of dead grass in it.

  57. We use to have a dog who had skin problems and lost a lot of her hair. It was because of a food allergy. I assume you have tried to rule that out as a cause? When we started feeding our dog a different food, her skin problems went away.

  60. Karen, do you know what she’s allergic to? I had a dog where they did tests and he was allergic to multiple pollens, trees, grasses, you name it. He was on shots & special food for a while but eventually the allergies let up. Or maybe they just became less noticeable because he began getting other problems, like diabetes. 😦 So then he got different shots and a different kind of special foods.

    I keep prednisone on hand for Cowboy, but I literally give him only about 2-3 tablets a year, only when he really flares up (usually around fall). Not sure what the allergy is with him, but he’s always had dry flaky skin and is prone to hair loss on his back near his tail. A lot of that has cleared up by using coconut oil & other supplements in his food, though.

    My dogs don’t get bathed often, maybe 2-3 times a year is all. They’re coats shed dirt well. But it is so-so nice to have them all clean and fluffy and trimmed up when they do go in for a bath & groom. 🙂
