It’s Friday!!!

On this day in 1485 the War of the Roses ended with the death of England’s King Richard III. He was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field. His successor was Henry V II. 

In 1775 the American colonies were proclaimed to be in a state of open rebellion by England’s King George III. 

In 1851 the schooner America outraced the Aurora off the English coast to win a trophy that became known as the America’s Cup. 

In 1906 the Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, NJ began to manufacture the Victrola. The hand-cranked unit, with horn cabinet, sold for $200. 

And in 1911 it was announced that Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” had been stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting reappeared two years later in Italy.

  10. I wonder what portion of donations goes to actual research for ALS? I usually do not give unless I know this about any charity or I trust those who are in the know about it. Has anyone here researched it?

  11. Kathaleena they say that they have raised over 45 million. I doubt this is a charity with a lot of overhead since the guy in the video I posted said only 30 thousand people had it and the Big Pharmaceutical companies weren’t doing a whole lot of research because there wasn’t a whole lot of money to be made

  14. Is that a goat in the header photo? I am reading a book for review which has a goat in it…so now I have a good picture in my mind of “Rocky”. I usually think of goats as being white, but this one looks more like a “Rocky”.

    I just finished my submission for the Divine Moments at Christmas book. Hopefully my story will be included in the compilation.

    Now I have to start work on my next assignment. It is good to have a mentor to keep me moving.

    Thanks, 6 Arrows, for that organ music from Spivey Hall that you linked on here. I enjoyed that. We were on a main highway when I asked my husband about where Clayton State is located because I knew it was in the area. The main entrance is right beside a state archives building that had always gotten my attention rather than the college entrance. So we had been driving by it many times without me even noticing it. Since I had never seen the campus, I asked if we might drive through it. Now I want to go inside Spivey Hall. It is rather amazing that when people live in a large city that there are so many little communities within the big metro area that you never get to see it all.

  16. Goats have amazing eyes.

    It’s Friday. Seems I’m still on the giant inflatable duck beat. The port MOVED giant smiling duck yesterday — to the shock of the public who now are having a hard time finding and seeing the giant duck.

    So much drama.

    Meanwhile, does it strike anyone else that the world seems to be imploding before our very eyes this summer? Sheesh.

  17. Goats have become very popular around here, saving the city and county thousands of dollars in tree and landscape trimmers.

    Of course, there are coyotes to contend with. At one local development site where they were keeping working goats, they had to acquire a llama to protect the herd from local coyotes who were picking off a few of the animals at night.

  18. The goat is part of the new mowing team at the park. As you can see from the branches and ground, they’re very good at what they do. They fenced off a couple of sections with electric fence around 3 sides and the river to the rear. If you look closely, that’s the river behind him.

    I got another goat’s pic too. 🙂

    Downside, now I can’t get to two good fishing spots. Stupid goats. 😦

  19. Goats are not stupid. Well, Turnip is but he is special. Japheth on the other hand has found every possible escape route. Crawling under the feed shed to get out, going through the creek and under the fence, climbing the nonclimable wire and onto the hay stack, jumping over his house and then back, etc. He is now confined with Turnip in the hog panel pen while Spud does all of the work J was supposed to be doing with the does.

  21. Instead of stupid, maybe they are just thick skulled. The skull squashes their brains so they are prone to rushing into things head first without a thought to the consequences. o_O

  27. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I am really not sure where I stand on embryonic stem cell research. I doubt very seriously that a woman chooses abortion so that stem cell research can be done. Not donating to a charity because they do it seems ….I don’t know. The babies are already aborted.

    I also know that adult stem cell research is a viable option.

    As I said. I just don’t know.

  30. Cheryl, I read that article. It is informative and also shows how expressions change from one generation to another. What is acceptable in one culture and time is not acceptable in another culture and time. Words fall in and out of fashion. Coverings for words do, too. I remember when we were not to speak the word “pregnant” in public. That seems so strange to consider that one of God’s great works of creation could not be acknowledged with a full and accurate word. We could say PG or other code words. Very strange to consider how society seems to bounce from one extreme to the other on words.

  33. ALS took the life of my maternal Grandfather…my son in law’s Mother died from ALS…and this past spring, a dear friend, who was only in his early 40’s lost his battle with the disease. I have cared for ALS patients in Hospice. It is a horrific disease. I myself, could not give to an organization using stem cells from aborted babies for their research. It just seems as though it is the continuation of disrespect and devaluation of that precious life who was given no voice. There is another organization one can give to if so inclined….

  38. Update on my face: perfect for Halloween–I look pretty scary! 🙂

    I probably would do the bucket thing because I think it’s funny, but I’d donate the money to a different ALS research project, as outlined above. Women who are deciding to abort sometimes will make that choice telling themselves, “at least it’s going to a good cause.” It’s just another tipping point that in my opinion shouldn’t be encouraged when we have so much demonstrated evidence for the efficacy of adult stem cells. All the embryonic cell research has been totally ineffective.

    Ask me, I’m a California taxpayer whose government has wasted a ton of money on it. 😦

  42. Mumsee, I agree, Japheth is not a very smart goat 🙂 Tim and I both had a good laugh.

    At one point I did think, what if a bear comes along, but then I realized the Jeep is never locked so I could always climb in there 🙂 And I didn’t lock myself out on purpose, I just didn’t grab my keys after taking my purse and my bag. I could have crawled back in through the wood chute, but then I would have had to clean myself up again and change out of the then dirty clothes.

    Chas- When you take over the country, outlaw college and pro football games on weeknights. High school games on Friday nights, college on Saturday, professional on Sunday. No Monday or Thursday games. Ever.

  46. I could use a wood chute but apparently, one would never know when a Canadienne might slip through it. Ah, well, I suppose we would have to go out on the deck and chat about how nice it must be to have a nice body of water only a mile away. We don’t see many canoes on our river, is is mostly inner tubes and rafts.

  53. No, it just means that we spend most of the days and evenings outside in the summer. Now if she creeps in through the wood chute, which does not currently exist, in the winter, we will either sit out on the deck roasting marshmallows in the chiminea while we are wrapped in blankets, or sit inside drinking hot chocolate by the wood stove for our chat.
