Our Daily Thread 8-19-14

Good Morning!

On this day in 1812 “Old Ironsides” (the USS Constitution) earned it’s nickname when it won a battle against the British frigate Guerriere east of Nova Scotia.

In 1848 the discovery of gold in California was reported by the New York Herald.

In 1917 team managers John McGraw and Christy Matthewson were arrested for breaking New York City’s blue laws. The crime was their teams were playing baseball on Sunday.

In 1934 Adolf Hitler was approved for sole executive power in Germany as Fuehrer.

And in 1942 about 6,000 Canadian and British soldiers launched a raid against the Germans at Dieppe, France.

  1. Good evening Jo. You have my prayers
    Good afternoon Tychicus.
    Hi Aj.
    Everyone else..
    UP AN’ AT EM!!!

    It just occurred to me–
I’ve never been around such talented people before.
I knew a couple of guys at the Naval War College who had the Congressional Medal of Honor.
(Recipients in the Viet Nam war.)
They said they were only doing what they had to do under the circumstances.
And a lot of people who disserved it didn’t get it.
    Most of them are dead.

  2. Good morning!

Jo: So sorry to hear you’re in such pain. I’ll pray that it relents soon.

    L. got back from her mandatory freshman retreat yesterday; she had a really good time and made lots of new friends. Thanks to all who’ve been praying for her! High school seems to be off to a good start!

  3. Hi all, Just dropping by to check up on all of you.

Jo, so sorry about your back! I’ve experienced that in a place with no chiropractors! NOT FUN!

I am in western NY now and will be starting to speak in churches in September. IT”S TOO COLD HERE! There, got that out of my system. I expected it to be cold in the fall, but it’s August!! My schedule is filling is and I’m scheduled almost every Sunday between now and Thanksgiving.

We have like buttons now?? LIKE!

  4. Hi Joanne, haven’t seen you for a while.
It’s global warming. They’re changing that to “climate change” but still mean to control our lives. I see on Drudge that an August snow is forecast for Scotland. I was there in December 1951.

  5. Hello, all.

    Sweet Mouse picture, again, ♡.

Sorry to hear about your back, Jo. I need to get back to the prayer thread. I continue to have phone power challenges. I often try to do webinars, bookfun chats, virtual prayer calls, and other things that take my power down so I can’t get back here when I want to. 😦

  6. Hi Joe & Joanne, haven’t seen you guys in a while. 🙂

And Jo (is there a name theme going on here), hope your back is better soon. You probably just strained something without realizing it.

Busy week for me, tomorrow I think I may have to start work at 6:30 a.m. which is akin to the middle of the night for me. 😉

  7. Jo, sciatic nerve? They have exercises for that. I struggled with that until fourth pregnancy when a German physical therapist told me not to stand so straight. She explained our backs are s shaped so standing like a Marine can cause challenges. I changed the way I stood and the problems ceased. I hope it is that simple for you.

  8. Good afternoon. Daughters are back at home after house-sitting, with a friend from Canada visiting DD#2. With even the dog being a girl, my husband is quite surrounded by estrogen. He does great with it, though. Having been a single dad through the adolescence of two girls, he’d better do well with it!

  9. Probably making an offer on a house this afternoon. It is a temporary fix, but the payment would be under $900 and anything I would live in that is for rent is $1300 and up. We, then, could turn it into rental property. A comparable home in the same neighborhood just rented at $1200.

I just want to feel peace about this decision. I am going back down from 2000SF to 1350SF and while I know “I” can do it, that was before I had to consider anyone else’s “heirlooms”

  10. Kim, that’s exciting. Praying … (Rents out here are generally higher than my mortgage payment as well, it’s crazy.)

My house is about 1,200 square feet (just under). And the house I grew up in was 800 square feet. But we’re all used to bigger houses now.

  11. so thankful for all the prayers. I’m sure that is what got me through the night. I was awakened by the hardest rain I recall hearing. Some folks had empty water tanks and I am sure that thy are full now. Doubt that the collections of bamboo that were passing for temporary bridges survived. They now have the frame of a new bridge extended over the river. They will use that for a temporary bridge while they pour fittings and other things to secure it.

  12. I finally got to meet our new office mate, Max the Minature Pinscher. He is great! He is between one and two years old, and has been to several different homes before landing in his new forever home (we hope, at least). He can’t be here during the main tax season, but during the off time he seems to fit right in. He thinks I am lovable if wagging tail and happy face are indicators. He shows his teeth when he smiles 😀

I got the grass mowed at home before I drove to the office. I was trying to cool down after getting all sweaty and of course Bosley thought it was time to get in my lap. She is loyal like a dog. It does not matter what room I am in, she finds a spot to plop down near me. This morning as husband was leaving, and we were hugging goodbye, Bosley got between our feet so she could be in on the group hug.

Having an only cat is similar to having an only child. It use to be that everytime I would offer to fix a little something special (food wise) for my husband that our son would chime in that he wanted me to fix him some, too.

  13. Janice, I’ve never been owned by a cat, so I’m definitely not an expert with them. But I know with Misten the key question she seems to ask herself is “Do they ever give me some of that food?” She pays no attention at all if I’m cutting up raw chicken, for example, since I’d never give a dog raw chicken. (Mom was very careful with that, since a dog can become a chicken killer if it decides it likes raw chicken. Now that I live in the country with chickens a couple houses down, I’m glad that I was diligent on that one even when I saw no evidence it was relevant for us!)

I don’t usually give Misten the scrapings from eggs because I put spices in them. But for a while I was cooking my husband’s eggs with only salt, and then she got the scrapings. Suddenly she started paying attention when I was serving eggs! (She isn’t allowed to beg or be underfoot. But if she shows up in the kitchen and doesn’t make a pest of herself, I’ll give her scraps.)

What’s interesting is that she knows that if one of us is eating Cheez-Its, she is allowed to have one. Just one. She will stare at the person who is eating them until we drop one for her, but after she has had her Cheez-It, she will then go back to her own life, rather than sitting asking for more than one. (Occasionally a second one falls, but she seems to recognize that is just occasional good luck.)

  14. I didn’t write the offer tonight. I let him take the blank contracts home to read. He popped up and said there is someone else involved in making the decision and he wants to run it by them.

  15. Cheryl, Misten is a very good girl! Our Keva will just sit and stare and it started bothering me, so we’ve been making him go to his ‘place’ until we release him. Yesterday, he noticed we were eating good stuff and he immediately went to his ‘place’. We were impressed because we haven’t been doing this more than a few days. 🙂

  16. Cheryl, Bosley is so use to eating her dried little pellets of cat food that she does not seem too interested in other food unless, in the case of meat, I break it in tiny pieces and feed it to her from my hand (hamburger, chicken, salmon, etc.) I have found that she loves corn kernals, and this week she ate 2 garbanzo beans. I am thinking they resemble her usual pellet size food enough to look appetizing to her. I know she could catch something in the wild, but as far as knowing how to eat her catch, she would be clueless. That is worrisome in case she ever escaped and could not be found. But she is so cute, she would probably charm her way into some chump’s good graces and get a daily meal ticket that way. 😉 I am glad you did not get Misten interested in raw chicken meat. My father lost his chickens to a dog who got in the chicken house when I was young. Now my brother has lost his chickens to coons. 😦

  17. Janice @ 6:30- Thanks for the info. I have never heard of the book or the author. So I looked it up and voila!- I got both Greenmantle and its the book that precedes it in the series, The 39 Steps, since it, too, was free for Kindle today.

  18. Thanks, Peter, now I have both of those. I also got “Sleeping Coconuts” by John and Bonnie Nystrom, who I met on my first day in Ukarumpa. Can’t wait to read it. Oh, it did cost 3 dollars, but is a lot more on sale in our store.

  19. Good evening jo.
    I’m just waiting around.
I woke up about 1:45 this morning and thought “Oh no, One of those nights. I’m going to lie here for hours.” Suddenly it’s 5:58 and about time to roll out.
