Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from Cheryl.

On this day in 1847 Richard M. Hoe patented the rotary-type printing press.

In 1948 Soviet occupation forces in Germany blockaded West Berlin. The U.S.-British airlift began the following day.

In 1969 the Apollo 11 astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean.

And in 1987 Hulda Crooks, at 91 years of age, climbed Mt. Fuji. Hulda became the oldest person to climb Japan’s highest peak.

  1. Good morning everyone but Jo & Tychicus.
    Hi Jo.
    Hi Tychicus.
    🙂

I promised to take Elvera to Hollywild today. But the forecast is for rain.
We may end up in Spartanburg.

  2. Well, we don’t need a new engine (hooray!). They were able to fix my car for only $1200. , which is much better than the $7,000. we were anticipating. And, it will be ready by Saturday, when we have to drive through Beaumont anyway to pick up L. in Lake Charles.

  3. Good morning, AJ, Chas, Ann and Cheryl. Ann, that’s exciting!

AJ, thanks for the “Prayer” video. That was lovely. And then an interesting contrast following it up with the Elvis video. 😉 Part of the fun of music — there is so much variety!

  4. I have a QoD (we’re leaving for a week’s vacation on Saturday): Do you usually over-pack or under-pack? I tend do the former and my hubby the latter. Is it a gender thing?

Speaking of hubby, we celebrate our 35th anniversary next Tuesday; I posted a TBT pic on FB.

  5. Anon. It may be a gender thing.
No matter where we’re going, nor for how long. TSWITW always overpacks.
I count out underwear and socks by days. Same for shirts, etc.

  6. We’ve had Comcast cable and internet in our rental property for almost two years. Every month the bill correctly says there are three receivers and a customer-owned router ($0). All of a sudden we get letter that says an “audit” has discovered an error in our bills and that in the future we will get billed for four receivers’ and a Comcast-owned router (an increase of $18).
What kind of “audit” could possibly discover a phantom receiver or router? Knowing the reputation of this company, I really wonder if they are just trolling for extra income. Did they send letters like this to all their customers, hoping that maybe 10% of them would not question it and go forth paying the extra amount? Or did they think that when attempting to clear it up, we’d get so frustrated by trying to talk to someone who doesn’t speak English that we’d give up?
Now they have the gall to say that we need to go to the house (which is an hour away) and tell them the serial numbers of the three receivers because they don’t know which one to “turn off.” How about they just turn off the new one they just “turned on?” Or better yet, how about they send a technician there to look themselves and while he’s there, he can fix the wire that’s hanging on the ground that we’ve been trying to get them to fix for eight months?

  7. kare2012 @ 10:13 pm yesterday: Peter, are you anywhere near Belle, Missouri? Friends of ours just recently moved there.

By the map that looks to be near Jefferson City, about 120 miles from me.

QoD- I’m like Chas, I count out the number of days and put enough of everything in the suitcase, then add one or two extra shirts and pants in case I get something on the others. (You know, spilled coffee or other drink/food on the clothes.)

QOD: I always over pack and I think I’ve trained my husband to over pack – he used to always not have enough of something 🙂

  9. Glad I am a morning person. The roofers showed up at 6:50AM and started tearing off the old shingles within 20 minutes of their arrival. D3, on the other hand, will probably want to stay at her cousins’ house if she wants to sleep as late as she likes.

  10. I was fooled by the nice header photo and thought it was from either Kare or Mumsee. Fox looks like he could be running from the farmer who owns the hen house. Did he get away with a chicken or just with his life?

I count days and clothing, too, however, I do take into consideration changing weather so that can mean overpacking for two seasons. That happens when we go to the beach in Dec. Temps range from 70’s to 40’s. I always pack more than my husband. I am getting better since I have flown a few places and had to be very careful about weight and number of bags.

  11. I don’t think either of overpacks or underpacks. If anything I overpack, but that is “to be prepared.” I count out days for everything and usually include an extra pair of socks and underwear. But it’s hard to know how many shirts and pants I might need, because I may or may not be able to wear everything twice. So I don’t pack separate outfits for each day, but pack more than enough for two wearings apiece, and usually end up having “more than enough.” But that’s better than not having enough, I think. Meanwhile, my husband will pack just two pairs of pants for a week away, and I just can’t do that. (For seven days I’d probably pack four pants and five shirts, or maybe just four shirts and a sweatshirt or two if it were winter.)

  12. The fox is being a good fox and hunting rodents, not chickens.

My husband and I were on our way home from picking our daughter up, and he saw the fox in the front lawn of a local business. So he quickly swung into their driveway, inched up, and rolled down the window. He drives a Prius, so it was all fairly quiet. The fox seemed to know we were there, but after a moment of hesitation he kept hunting. I watched and took photos for about four minutes. At the end of that time he had moved farther away from us and was sitting down, and so we left.

I’d only seen foxes twice in my life. Once was really a quick glimpse; it went across my headlights at night and my mind said, “Wait! That was the shape of a fox, not a coyote.” The second time was a couple years ago, we were driving somewhere (all four of us), and a fox crossed in front of us. So this is the first time I’ve gotten anything other than a quick glimpse. (My family once got to watch a mother and cubs, but that was before we were married and I wasn’t there.)

  13. Terrific fox photo!

My brother, wife and two Cal athlete children climbed Mt Fuji on Monday. My nephew’s comment on Instagram: “Mom had a moment.”

They all thought it much harder than expected, but my niece wore shorts all the way up! (And a hooded jacket at the top!) they posted glorious photos of the sunrise at 2am.

Meanwhile, I’m in LA relaxing by the pool, seeing other relatives, actually sleeping for a change and praying. WWI went to the requesting editors yesterday, and while I’m still cleaning up the copy, the die is cast.

Off to a museum exhibit on Pompeii this morning. My daughter is great and I’m so thankful to God for all, including some of you those years ago, who prayed for our relationship during the miserable junior high years.

She’s a joy, pure joy, and I am blessed–even if she did give me all this gray hair! 🙂

  14. Well, it appears to be a gender thing. 🙂 Women are ‘gatherers’ and nesters, we like to always be prepared for whatever might happen. What if it rains? What if it gets hot? What if I need something dressy? I have a heavy jacket … but maybe I’ll need a lighter-weight jacket, too.

Of course, then your luggage gets lost and you have nothing but what you’re wearing … 😉

We’re ramping up into a heat wave out here and today I’m visiting a friend (an hour away) who lives in one of the hottest parts of LA, a good 10 degrees hotter than it is where I live. So it’ll easily be over 100 degrees there today (it’s supposed to be 92 where I am).

And I woke up today with what looks like the beginnings of a stye in my right eye.

Nice fox. I’ve never seen one but we do have them here in our coastal nature preserve.

My wife is a light packer, clothes wise anyway.

    Linda,

Is it Monday or Tuesday? I noted Monday, but you’d know better than I. 🙂 And congrats, that’s quite an accomplishment. 🙂

  16. My husband and I saw a fox while hiking in snow when we were at Yellowstone in 1985, the year we married. I believe that is the only wild one I have seen. I think I recall that Cheryl posted something about how some people have foxes for pets these days. Quite expensive, but for those who want something on the biting edge…get a fox!

  17. That’s a good picture of the fox, Cheryl.

It’s nice having all these different pictures as headers and elsewhere on the blog. I had missed a bunch of them when I was offline, so I browsed through all the pics in the sidebar just now (in their enlarged versions). There certainly is much beauty in God’s creation, and all of you who have sent in pictures have captured well the intricacies of God’s design.

Packing — I’m of the mindset that less is not more. 😉 Of course, I haven’t flown, so I might try to minimize if it cost me more to have extra baggage, which it sounds like it does.

Hubby has always packed less than I do the times we’ve traveled in the past. He can withstand a wide variety of temperatures wearing, say, jeans and a T-shirt. Me, it can be a warm day in the 80’s, and if I’m in the sun, I get too hot very soon and have to get to shade. Then, if a breeze comes up while I’m in the shade, you will see that I have goosebumps all over my arms and legs. 😉

Hubby teased me one time that I will probably be the only documented case of frostbite in August. 😀

I need something with me for every season, no matter what season it is. 😛

  18. I haven’t flown in a while, either, so with the added charges now in play it would probably (might-maybe) make a difference on how I pack.

But last time I flew to the east coast (during winter), I remember they slapped a bright yellow OVERWEIGHT tag on my bag. Embarrassing. At least it had wheels.

Which is why my stepmother always puts extra undies and a change of clothes in a carry-on bag.

Re: Fox sightings- we have grey foxes around here and I have seen several over the years. I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen a red one though.

  21. It isn’ta wise to choose the Ranger for a trip in the mountains. It did ok. But it’s awkward trying to enter the interstate at 45 mph. The Merc is always up to speed and finds its place to merge. The Ranger had to find a large opening. Fortunately a nice person moved to the left lane for me. And it was all it could do to maintain speed going up the Saluda grade.
But we had a nice trip. At least Elvera did.

  22. QoD: My family and friends tell me I am a light packer. The question when someone picks me up at an airport or train station or bus terminal is usually, “Is this all?” However, I always think that I end up bringing too much and could have reduced it further.

I found a four-leaf clover today. I was visiting with my youngest sibling and baby niece. I sat on the grass with baby niece and I picked a piece of clover to show her and found it had four leaves instead of the typical three.

  23. Good news from Sudan!
I use to find a lot of four leaf clovers. It has been a long time now since I have seen one. I did see a gulf fritillary butterfly which must have been new to flight. I was able to momentarily get it to move into my hand.

  24. Everyone’s probably asleep now…but, I just caught up on the blog. Becca is spending the night at a friend’s house a few doors down and L. is still in Florida, so Hubby and I had a rare evening alone. We watched part of a terrible movie and laughed at how bad it was. And, we talked a lot. It was a fun night!

Today’s QoD: I overpack! When we went to the Caymans, my bag weighed 49 pounds!!! I’m awful about packing–always waiting ’til the last minute and then just throwing stuff in–thinking–“well, I might need this…” I never bring jewelry on trips, except what I wear on travel day (unless it’s something really special, like a wedding). The only time I packed carefully was for my honeymoon. But, I always have what I need and I carry (roll) my own luggage, so Hubby doesn’t seem to care. Besides, I might know what the weather will be, but I never know what kind of clothing mood I will be in once there!

I admire people who pack efficiently, though.

  25. 50! Although no one’s here to appreciate my accomplishment.

Today I went “from the South Bay to the Valley,” as the song (“I Love LA”) puts it, where it was 104 degrees by 1 p.m.

I got home late tonight, about an hour ago, and it was still 77 degrees outside here (but was 88 when I left the Valley at around 10 p.m.).

Trying to cool the house down, every window is open, every fan turned on high. Last I looked, it was still 83 degrees inside my house. The cat’s splayed out on the floor, I don’t know where the dogs are … Probably lying in front of an open window & a fan somewhere since the doggie door’s closed for the night.

    We’re having a heat wave.
