It’s Saturday!!!!

On this day in 1776 American Colonists repulsed a British sea attack on Charleston, SC. 

In 1869 R. W. Wood was appointed as the first Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy.

In 1902 the U.S. Congress passed the Spooner bill, it authorized a canal to be built across the isthmus of Panama. 

In 1945 U.S. General Douglas MacArthur announced the end of Japanese resistance in the Philippines.

And in 1967 Israel formally declared Jerusalem reunified under its sovereignty following its capture of the Arab sector in the June 1967 war.

  3. Lucy was better then Mary Tyler Moore. But I never watched TV. I was too busy in those days. But on reviewing yesterday’s thread, I learned something.
    Elvera used to go around singing a single line,
    “You’re going to make it after all”
    I thought she was making that up.

  4. Have you ever been faced with making a decision you didn’t want to make?
    Up to now the hardest one I have ever made was whether or not to put my father through chemo. I made the decision not to. It was the right choice.
    BG made the decision to go live with her dad. It broke my heart again.
    I know another one is coming and either decision I make will hurt someone.

  7. Good Morning…I’ve been up since 4AM…why does sleep escape me these days?!
    Kim I have been in that spot…making a hard decision that seemed it would rip my very heart out. So much pleading before The Lord as to what He would have me do…stepping out in faith and trust…and as gut wrenching as it was….He placed markers in the path to confirm to me that yes…He was in control.. Praying for you this day ❤

  12. A week from today I will see some of you. I can use my phone to map my way to you, but just this week I noticed that the charger to my phone is no longer in my truck. The police said this happens every summer. It is more sad to me that this happens here because none of these kids need to steal. The probably have better phones and everything else than what they are stealing.They are just bored and it is a game to them. It’s about $50 to me.

  16. Praying for the best decision, Kim. That is an unpleasant place to be in. In my main stress issue I feel the same way. Whatever I do is wrong or not enough. 😦 Sorry about the charger, too. I always thought one of the best things about having an uncool, old phone is that no one would want to steal it. I never even thought about the cord. Always something.

  19. Well I have scrubbed the house from top to bottom. I have tried once again to get the stains out of the bathtub but can’t. I have even filled it up with bleach and water in the past. Doesn’t work. Neither did the new stuff I bought. I have wiped down all the baseboards, door frame, and doors with Lysol water. I have dusted and swept. I don’t want the woman to walk through tomorrow night and think we are some type of losers who won’t take care of the house. I have even considered that maybe I should write the buyers agent an email telling him all the features of the house that weren’t pointed out in MLS and you wouldn’t know until you started opening cabinets. Most of the wood and cabinets are wide plank heart pine. They have many layers of paint over them.
    I have washed three loads of clothes and am now dressed and ready to go outside and mow the grass but someone won’t show me how to start his lawn mower. I don’t know if it is straight gas or if you have to mix oil and gas. I do know it is self propelled.
    Once BG wakes up we are going to get our toes done.

  20. Michelle, my father was about two months old one hundred years ago. Guess you could say his survival through childbirth and being a newborn had a direct influence upon me being here today. 🙂

  21. Kim, if you are dealing with rust stains, you can put some vinegar on the spots and then rub some salt over it. That is something I learned from one of those household hint books.

  22. Kim, I have never heard of a self propelled mower that was a mix. Look and see if there is a place for oil. If so, it is straight gas. You likely will have to prime the mower.
    OTOH. It isn’t you trying to sell the house. If you have your rent current, you aren’t even obliged to leave the house for them to view.
    But you know more about this than I dol.

  23. Even though I am in a salaried position, I make my living in real estate. I can’t afford to have my name smeared in any way, plus I want to stay here until October and don’t want to make any waves. I want her to think I take care of things. Most renters don’t. On the other hand I am fighting just not caring one way or the other.

My husband posted this on FB this morning: “Two things I realized all over again at work yesterday: heaven will probably smell like a balsam fir forest, and there’s something special about these days in the year when the sunset glow doesn’t really end, it just slides from northwest to northeast and becomes the sunrise glow.” He’s got the best job 🙂

    When I first saw Aj’s statement about the battle for Charleston. I meant to post that Sgt. Jasper retrieved a flag that had been shot down, saying, “Don’t let us fight without a flag.” It was important to him.

    There’s a monument on Sullivan’s Island to him. He’s a local hero.

    Working on the transfers for the English service offering for the month of June. As it is a 5 Sunday month, I probably have a hundred to do. Some brilliant fellow in the finance office created a form that helps so much. you enter in the account number and push tab and the name appears. so helpful. Also helps to know if you have the correct number.

  32. It’s that time, EST, when church going families are struggling to get their children out of bed and resdy for church. May God give the parents stamina, endurance and persistence in the struggle. This is a battle that is worth it. Lesser battles deserve a white flag. Not this one.

  34. Good morning! I think I’m coming down with the summer cold that started with Becca eight days ago…then L. succumbed last Thursday…My throat is scratchy and I slept fitfully, but I don’t feel that bad, yet. Maybe it’s just allergies… One can hope!

  35. Hope you’re not getting sick Annms. I had a scratchy throat for several days before I got really sick, went to work feeling tired but “ok” generally, no other apparent symptoms, until it really hit me.

    I’m making coffee this morning. 🙂 I don’t usually, but have been drinking a cup the past several days and it really does make me feel a little peppier.

    Anyone here watch the show Criminal Minds? I was watching a couple of the reruns yesterday and noticed they kept using a term I wasn’t familiar with, sounded like ‘unsub.’ I did a quick google search and it stands for “unknown suspect.” You can find most anything on the Internet. 🙂

    Yesterday you said you’d see us in a week. Which implies 7 days, or next Saturday. But I thought it needed to be changed to Sunday, hence my confusion. Either works, but which is it, I forget?

  37. Missing church this morning. Woke up with a mild migraine, caught in time for medication, but not well enough to drive myself in – I would go if husband hadn’t been so late last night and could drive this morning. I really don’t like skipping church, it feels like something is missing for the rest of the day/week.

    Hope you manage to fight off the sickness, Ann, and that Jo continues to recover.

    Oh, and belated happy birthday to Cheryl. It’s been a busy, tiring, but good week.

  38. I hope those who have been feeling under the summer weather will feel better soon.

    We had a really good sermon this morning about “Amazing Jesus.”
    It was based on the story in Luke about the centurian with the ill servant. Jesus was amazed by the faith of the centurian. At another point in scripture Jesus is amazed by a lack of faith. Seems we can go either direction.

    We also had a sixtyish man do the believer’s baptism. Our church has started doing video testamonies to play on the big screen before the baptism.

  39. I think my spelling part of my brain has taken Sunday off. The church A/C was not working for a good portion of the a.m. so I probably am also suffering from sweaty brain cells.

    I just baked some bar cookies with P B, oatmeal and chocolate chips. I can do a tiny batch in my very small toaster oven. Gradually learning about downsizing. Husband will enjoy his oats this way. Almost feels like having one of those Easy Bake ovens I wanted and never got as a child. 🙂

  41. Our pastor spoke 1 John 2:12-17 (“A Message for Everyone”), taking a bit of a break from Romans (and after next sunday he’ll be gone until late September on sabbatical; we’ll really miss him, but have an excellent associate pastor and another elder/staffer who are both wonderful).

    From this morning’s sermon (which included a passage on loving the world): “We cannot serve two masters. Our love of God must make our love of man appear to be hate by comparison. Of course it is only when this takes place that our love of man can be good and undefiled. God loves us because He looks at Jesus. We are to love men because we look to God.”

  44. Donna, in Sunday School we had the lesson about King Saul losing God’s favor and how one of his sins iwas people pleasing instead of God pleasing. Also, our pastor will soon be on sabbatical, too.

Yesterday – or maybe the day before (I’ve been behind again on reading the comments) – Roscuro mentioned having once started to watch an episode of Mary Tyler Moore, & turning it off in disgust over the sexual innuendo. I’m sure many of you familiar with the show had the same reaction as I did – Huh?

    But then I remembered Betty White’s Sue Ann Nivens character, & that, although she wasn’t on a lot, she had a sexual overtone to her, & was always “interested” in a male character (Lou Grant, I think), & I think she was having an (off-screen) affair with Phyllis’s husband, Lars.

    Other than her character, I really can’t remember any other kind of sexual innuendo in the show, at least not as a usual part of the show.

    Did any of you watch Ed Asner’s spin-off, Lou Grant, which was a drama?

  47. Karen, well, there was Rhoda …. 🙂 Ok, true, so it wasn’t squeaky-G, I suppose. But for the most part I don’t (and didn’t) consider the humor over the line in that regard. There’s a certain “earthiness” about the human condition, frankly, and I just don’t recoil easily at some off-color humor.

    I didn’t see much of the Lou Grant spinoff drama which was very different, of course. But it was very popular with many of my journalism friends at the time. Can’t remember how/why I didn’t see the show, maybe it was on when I was regularly out or something.

    Interesting about the link, Janice — I was just talking to the 80-something woman I drive to and from church as we were coming home today that barring a spiritual revival, America’s days are probably numbered. She agreed.

    I’ve always had the hope that the next election will turn things around. But now I don’t even think that will make a difference. I think the economic system is, for the most part, broken and we seem to be stuck in a continual cycle of recession (I always shake my head when pundits suggest we’re in a recovery); we also have become morally bankrupt in many ways.

    And the discouraging part about that is that it’s from the bottom up — we’re the problem. Our government is horrible right now, true. But what makes me shudder is the idea that it only is a reflection of … us.

  48. I agree, Donna. That’s why I think that prayer is our only hope. If there is no revival, we have nowhere to go, but down. I agree with Chas when he says that he is praying for his children and grandchildren.

  50. Our youth were back from camp today. They are a great bunch and seemed to have a good time. The teachers are always tired, so we have “Action Sunday” (skit day) on the first Sunday after camp. The lesson was a challenge to cover in four skits, but the kids did great, and our Youth Minister did a great job of filling in the blanks.
    Our old seniors are all set for college, so it is time to focus on our upcoming seniors who have a great deal of promise and our new junior class which is loaded with superior girl athletes. Lots of volleyball and basketball to watch.

  54. I knew a college professor (and Christian) who was older — she said much of the thinking that has landed us where we are today began in the 1950s.

    It’s been a process of decline — but one that has accelerated at a remarkable pace in the past 10 years.

  55. We just had some lovely cantaloupe.

    Husband is watching a movie, I think the sequel to National Treasure. Bosley just did her blur run like crazy through the room.

    Donna, you asked about Criminal Minds last night. Husband was watching while I was sitting near him, but I was not very involved with the program. It sounded pretty gruesome about a judge taking justice in his own hands because he no longer trusted the system to punish the ones who got off lightly for their crimes. I think the judge was the Planner and he got a killer to mutilate the victims. That is not my kind of program, but just like right now, I am nearby my husband but I am more engaged online than with the movie. Bosley likes it when we are all together. 🙂 ❤

  56. Yeah, some of the crime can get gruesome. Same with NCIS sometimes. But being a journalist I guess I’ve always liked those shows. I also like the ensemble acting that works so well in some of the shows — NCIS and Criminal Minds being 2 of those, in my opinion.

  57. I fed my animals a little while ago, but Tess is always “herding” Annie around the kitchen. I call Tess off and tell Annie to please, try to be a little smarter next time. She likes to pass right by (and rub on) Tess. And that, of course, always brings the same border collie response. GET OUTTA HERE, CAT. 😮

  58. Donna J, I am sure the professor was right, but the bad thinking really began to affect the popular culture in the 1960s. Ben-Hur swept the Avademy Awards in 1959. By 1969, Midnight Cowboy won Best Picture. That is a long fall in a decade, just as it was a long fall from Buddy Holly to the groups at Woodstock.

  60. Sleep eludes me. L. is spending the night at her old best friend’s house tonight. They had a huge falling out about a year ago. The girl texted L. earlier today and took responsibility for her part of their problems and offered a heartfelt apology. She asked if L. would come over and spend the night so they could talk about things. They live right down the street, so we let her go. It’d be nice if the could work things out…

    Hubby’s family is coming to town for the Fourth. We’ll spend Thursday and Friday with them on Lake Conroe and Saturday, everyone is coming to our house to swim and cook out. His siblings leave on Sunday. It will be nice for the cousins to get to spend some time together and Hubby really enjoys being with everyone. BIL finally proposed to his girlfriend of five years. She already seems like part of the family and everyone’s thrilled they’re going to make it official. BIL will turn fifty this year and this will be his first marriage.

    My sister will be home in less than a month! I’m so excited about seeing her!

  61. Very exciting day today! We found a car for Connie and bought it! I am giving it to her tomorrow. It’s in great shape — a Toyota Corolla with only 34,000 miles on it. I’ve been looking for almost a month and this seemed like a really good deal. The woman we bought it from was absolutely delightful. She invited Becca and I into her home while Scott checked out the car, offered us drinks, etc. Turns out, she also has her MSSW, so we had quite a lot in common and were fast friends in the forty-five minutes we were there. The car had been her daughter’s, but she’s now working in South Africa…

    I feel like it’s Christmas Eve and I can’t wait to give a loved one a special gift.
