Good Morning!

On this day in 1497 Italian explorer John Cabot, sailing in the service of England, landed in North America on what is now Newfoundland.

In 1675 King Philip’s War began when Indians massacre colonists at Swansee, Plymouth colony.

In 1844 Charles Goodyear was granted U.S. patent #3,633 for vulcanized rubber.

In 1955 Soviet MIG’s down a U.S. Navy patrol plane over the Bering Strait.

And in 1982 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that no president could be sued for damages connected with actions taken while serving as President of the United States.

Today is Mark Lowry’s birthday.

Today is also Jeff Beck’s birthday. In my never-ending quest for out-of-the-ordinary music, this one’s pretty high up the list of favorites. Jeff Beck, with Billy Gibbons of ZZTop, performing Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons.”

Love it. 🙂

And it’s Jeff Cease’s as well. So Crowes it is.

  1. Good morning! Becca’s finally feeling better. In addition to having strep, she ended up with a viral infection that’s caused a deep cough and lots of mucus. The cough is lingering, but she’s feeling much better. She is going to Grandma’s today for a four day day camp held at Grandma’s subdivision. She lives on Lake Conroe, so there are lots of fun water sports.

This is L.’s last week at horse camp. I’ll be glad to have her home this Saturday.

  2. Check in abut eight hours from now Jo. Get some sleep, that’s the best thing for a cold.
It was Merle Travis who wrote Sixteen Tons. He did a better job.
    Tennessee Ernie made it famous.

  3. Starting my day. Helping my friend do the paperwork in a paperless system to sell the house I am living in. Twenty-Three years of friendship trumps where you are “staying”. There is a difference between living somewhere and staying.

  4. You didn’t drive everyone away, Chas. It’s just that a lot of us are west of you in different time zones. So when you post at 7:21, it’s 6:21 for those of us in the Central time zone, and earlier for mumsee, Michelle, Donna and others farther West.

I’ve been up since 5 something, as D3 left the house real early to get on a train to go visit a friend. She had forgotten how to get to the train station, so she texted for directions.

  5. I may be up, but make it a point to do my bible reading and prayer before I go online at all (or other things) That just works best for me. I did try to get through an insurance portal while the coffee brewed this morning. I had tried all day yesterday until about 10:00 pm. I thought maybe early morning would work, but no go. It is not Obama Care, either.

Sorry for all the upset, Kim. That is a big upheaval for you, both physically and emotionally.

  6. I really like “Sixteen Tons”. Having a dad and a husband work in steel making and a mine, I get the subject. My dad lived in a company town for a bit and knew how the company store worked.

I remember watching tv and seeing Tennessee Ernie singing it in the old Soviet Union. My dad really enjoyed that.

Good songs this morning. I don’t open many, however, since my internet is limited.

  7. I was up early, but not on the internet. I am at the office with husband today for a few hours. I still don’t want to leave Bosley alone for too long. She has been earning the name ‘Wild Child’ lately. She really goes through phases of being calm and wild. I am enjoying having time in the car driving while my husband is reading Angela Hunt’s book, Passing Strangers, to me. She is an excellent author.

More beautiful flowers! Thanks, AJ, for the many ways you brighten up our days.

Husband just brought in financial statements for me to collate and staple for distribution at a meeting.

Brother has a really bad cold with bronchitus. Prayers for him and Jo to feel much better soon. Prayers continuing for Michelle’s progress on her book.

Wll check back later today. Y’all have a great morning!

  8. Love these flowers, too. I like those sweet, little blossoms that *pop* with color. 🙂

Ah, 16 Tons, great song. I’m used to the Tennessee Ernie Ford rendition, but this one by the composer is good too. That song is gold.

Sorry to hear you’re still feeling bad, Jo. And the deep cough with mucus Becca had was what mine turned into as well. I sounded horrible. I figured it had transitioned into bronchitis since I also was very fatigued (no fever though).

Well, I’m already tired today. I woke up at 2:30 and felt wide awake for some reason, could not go back to sleep. It was good time spent, though, I read Scripture and another Christian book I’m doing, wrote a little bit & prayed. I think I must have gotten back to sleep around 4:30 or 5, though, so now I’m feeling pretty rough facing a full work day. 😦 And I had a dream I was talking to Hillary Clinton, somehow I knew her. Very strange.

We have our June Gloom this morning, overcast and cool outside. It’ll warm up, though, to probably the mid-70s at least.

  9. I was out working for a full hour without stopping. That means I have to rest for two.

    😦

I remember the “gloom” Donna. I was out there for two weeks (seminar at UCLA) in the late sixties. Every morning, it seemed cloudy and gloomy. But the sun dried all of that up.
LA is on about the same latitude as Columbia, SC.

  10. Some good long-view perspective from Russell D. Moore on the benefits — and the necessity — of making Christianity “strange” again in America, as it is surely now becoming:

    http://www.patheos.com/blogs/geneveith/2014/06/making-christianity-strange-again/#more-19207

” … In the ‘religion’ aisle at any given bookstore, one can see volumes promising ‘every day a Friday’ and so on. Jesus is the totem to acquire what American culture has told us we deserve. This is closer to Canaanite fertility religion than to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We have become the people Jesus warned us about.

“When we encounter those persecuted around the world, we see a glimpse of what Jesus has called all of us to. We see the sort of faith that isn’t a means to an end. We see the sort of faith that joins the global Body of Christ, across time and space, in the confession of a different sort of reign. We see a gospel that isn’t the American Dream with heaven at the end. …”

  11. Good for Dennis Prager. He took on the mayor’s use of of the F-bomb last week (mostly to cheers and accolades from the public).

    http://www.dennisprager.com/la-mayor-exemplifies-americas-decline/

“So, who are those who think this reflects serious social decay?

“They probably fall into two categories: those over, let’s say, 55 years of age and religious individuals of all ages.

“Older Americans grew up in a religious America, and religions draw a strong distinction between the holy and the profane. That explains why even some non-religious older Americans will find this objectionable.

“But the secular and left-wing tsunami of the last half century has all but extinguished the concept of the holy, and thereby extinguished the concept of the profane. If nothing is holy, nothing is profane. …

“One is tempted to dismiss Eric Garcetti as either a fool or a bad guy. Based on what he did, and his continuing defense of it, he may well be the former. But he is not the latter. Above all, he is a man of the left, a Democrat, and a product of a secularized culture.”

  12. Donna,

I like Prager, but I disagree with that last part. He is all those things, but his classlessness in front of the public isn’t excused or justified by those things. His lack of tact and decency shows he’s both a fool, and a bad guy. Good guys show a little more respect for their audience.

As Rudy from Fat Albert once said, he’s like school in the summertime. No class.

  14. Turns out that my renters have still not left and I have not received any rent this month.
Kim, what is a section 8 applicant?? They say it is a brother and sister and his son and she is on disability.

  15. The people qualify for Section 8 housing based on income and disability. The government will pay the difference between what they can pay and what your rent is. It used to mean you were a slum lord and the tenents were losers. Now the property has to meet certain standards and the people who qualify generally take good care of the property because their Section 8 status can be revoked.
I am not sure what California real estate laws are or where your property is located. Donna has a Facebook and I have connected with her. If it is close enough, perhaps she can offer you some guidance.

  16. Quite stormy here at home for the moment. Glad I got home earlier and not out on the roads now.

Earlier I shopped at Brandsmart and bought a Breville panini press for our son. That is like a sandwich maker that leaves grill marks and can be used as a grill or small griddle. I had considered getting him a Paperwhite Kindle, but he did not want that. He said a toaster or panini press would be nice. I can’t believe he will soon be a quarter of a century old. Make the most of it if you have young ones because the upper teens and early twenties fly by.

  17. I also got him two requested books of a theological nature. He is at the age where birthday gifts are better received if they aren’t surprises that mom picked out. With all the reading he does I thought he would like a Paperwhite Kindle which is easy on the eyes. Good thing I asked.

Thanks for the info Kim. It seems that there are also other applicants. It would be nice if this months rent came.
