Our Daily Thread 6-23-14

Good Morning!

On this day in 1683 William Penn signed a friendship treaty with Lenni Lenape Indians in Pennsylvania.

In 1860 the U.S. Secret Service was created to arrest counterfeiters.

In 1865 Confederate General Stand Watie, who was also a Cherokee chief, surrendered the last sizable Confederate army at Fort Towson, in the Oklahoma Territory.

In 1868 Christopher Latham Sholes received a patent for an invention that he called a “Type-Writer.”

And in 1947 the U.S. Senate joined the House in overriding President Truman’s veto of the Taft-Hartley Act.

  1. Hello Janice. I was here and spoke to Jo on yesterday’s thread.
    But I left.
I know how it feels to be left all alone.
It happened to me yesterday afternoon.
Then, after I left, Yapamom and others came and claimed a hundred.
I wonder what all of that means?

😥 I can’t open the Johnny and June video.
But I think I have it on CD somewhere.

  3. Hello Chas and Janice. I was reading and making cottage cheese. Just checking in before some sleep. I will put a request on the prayer thread for PNG.

  4. I watched “Going to Jackson” for you Chas. They can really sing it.

This morning husband spotted me while I stood on a stool and got down those upper branches on the shubbery. Now it is time to move on to some more. Eventually I will get to the honeysuckle vines covering up the azeleas. Right now I have itches on ankles. Guess I need some bug spray.

  5. I’ve been through Jackson, Mississippi, before. Never stopped for long. One time we were on our way to a Bible conference driving through at 4:00AM. Not knowing which were the bad parts of town we stopped for gas and a rest stop. Judging from the two or three buildings we saw I guessed it was a part of town to avoid. But at 4:00AM even the worst of the bad guys are asleep.

  6. Quite a jolt of an earthquake just now at almost midnight. I seem to be getting a cold, so was up finding some medicine. If the jolting had continued, I would have gone outside to be safe. Someone will post where the epicenter was. There was another earlier this evening. Wondering if there will be another tonight….. So… what do you all want to talk about as I wait up for earthquakes????

  7. Hi Jo. Earthquakes can be alarming. Disturbing even. But God knows about them and assures us they will happen.

Husband is headed back to Canada. Two sixteen year olds took him this time, one is the new graduate from the youth academy. He did well, we are proud of him. We are happy that he finished. We look to see if any maturing set in.

  8. I would have to say that Christianity is. Lots of different denominations, but all Christians. Of course that is all since missionaries came. Before that, it was a belief in the spirit world.

  9. The thought for this originated on the Politics thread. I posted that lately every law and directive carries the name opposite of the intent of the action. “Affordable Care Act” is the immediate example. “Women’s Health Protection” is another. But the point, I think belongs here, not on politics is this:
If Dr. Jones doesn’t show up Sunday, I will be teaching Ezekiel 28. Part of it is prophesy against the prince of Tyre. Another, v 11f, is lamentation upon the king of Tyre. I believe the portion of 11f is about Satan. If I teach it, I will emphasize two distinct features of the work of Satan.
    1. His stock in trade is violence. Everything he’s involved in ends up that way.
    2. His method is deception. Everything he says and does is false.
Though he appears an angel of light. He is lying all the time and the end of it all is disaster in some form.

    Depend on it.

  10. Is it Monday?

June Carter was a cutie, they both could sure sing it.

Janice’s mention of bug bites on her ankles — I have some kind of super-itchy bite on the back of my right heel, just about drove me nuts every time I woke up last night just to turn over. I’m using some aveno cortisone creme and Benadryl gel on it (and on another leg bite) which works well but wears off in about 3-4 hours.

Has anyone used those candles outdoors that are supposed to deter mosquitoes?

  11. 5.4 is a decent quake. We don’t take much note of 4s anymore. A 6 is into very scary territory, depending on whether it’s centered where there a lot of people and buildings.

  12. Donna, I only have a cotton ball and witch hazel to put on my bites. It lasts for about the same time.

Jo, the quakes do sound rather scary. God is our only firm foundation. Lots to pray over lately.

Son would have made a B on his Latin midterm, but he was able to complete extra credit work and earned an A. Thanks for praying.

Chas, you are right about Satan doing everything through deceitfulness. God is all truth and Satan is all deceit. When I think about it, God probably would not play poker or other games like that.

I have talked to a lender. We could buy but I can’t make anyone else in my house see the value of the location, He is in Pensacola today but I did send him text.

  14. Donna, we use the OFF candles quite a bit, and they work quite well when not too windy. They are much more expensive than the coils which we use more often. The candles are prettier than the coils, but both stink and you wonder just what exactly you’re inhaling.

  16. we get enough earthquakes here that we just enjoy the rocking and rolling. Last night was a stronger quake than we have had in quite a while.
My ankles are usually covered in bites. I thought everyone looked like that, but turns out it is mostly just me.

  17. Donna, I would love to get one of the puppies, but Keva is such a good dog and stays at home without the need of a fence, we would hate to jeopardize that. Most people say that 2 dogs will tend to run together (and go visiting and chasing wildlife)

  18. yeah, I agree. When I was a kid we had four dogs and a nice pen (but gee, we hated cleaning that pen). If we let one out, they stayed around, but if all four got out they were gone for the day. We had 40 acres, so there was room, but, in a group, they left.

  19. Donna, thinking of you with this cold. I am taking echnicea and zicam and a nap. Hoping it goes away soon. Can’t help with the quints when I’m sick

  20. Hope you feel better Jo, the cold virus I had was pretty debilitating. Lasted a good week. Lots of sleep helps.

Yes, Tess & Cowboy have gone visiting through the neighborhood on rare occasions when they’ve managed to get out from under the back fence. Harassing cats, seeing the world without a leash. What fun.

  21. Jo, I hope you feel better really quickly. I know you want to be helping with the quints. You may have picked up the virus from them. Younger children seem to be good at gifting the adults taking care of them with various ailments.
