Our Daily Thread 4-14-14

Good Morning!

On this day in 1775 the first abolitionist society in U.S. was organized in Philadelphia with Ben Franklin as president.

In 1828 the first edition of Noah Webster’s dictionary was published under the name “American Dictionary of the English Language.”

In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth. He actually died early the next morning.

In 1912 the Atlantic passenger liner Titanic, on its maiden voyage hit an iceberg and began to sink. 1,517 people lost their lives and more than 700 survived.

And in 1939 the John Steinbeck novel “The Grapes of Wrath” was first published.

Quote of the Day

Luke 22:8-20

And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.

And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

  1. I thought I entered a comment. Maybe I forgot to hit “Post”. 😦

Jo has had a day to think about it, we are just getting started.
    Lemme see if this works..

  2. Question of the day? Do you put out any kind of decorations in your yard or home to celebrate the Easter season?

I don’t, but think it would be nice to have an Easter themed banner at some point.

  3. Lovely Monday morning ducks!! Are those PA ducks….I know they aren’t Colorado ducks…our ponds are still frozen…it is 11 degrees here this morning and Paul is snowblowing the 5 fresh inches of snow we received overnight….we got a good 6 inches yesterday during the day…I am so over winter…this is not a nice spring snow….and we get our next round Wed and Thurs…but…Easter…it is predicted to be 70 degrees!
I don’t put out Easter themed decorations in the yard…I do place a few paper mâché eggs in a bowl with an antique bunny close by, and I have a couple framed antique Easter postcards that I put out on side tables. That is the extent of my themed decorations 🙂

  4. Loretta’s song is owned by Sony ATV publishing and they won’t let me hear it.
I heard on WHKP that the #1 song on this date in 1958 was “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”. Times have changed.

No decorations for Easter. It used to be that the girls got a new dress or hat to wear on Easter Sunday.

  5. No decorations. I still need to swap out my winter door wreath for a spring version.

I have neighbors about 2 blocks away (we walk by there on dog walks) who have huge decorations in their yard for every holiday. Big, wooden cutout figures of pilgrims and turkeys for Thanksgiving, Santa and snowmen for Christmas, bunnies and eggs for Easter … I always know what time of year it is by walking by their house. 🙂

It’s always interesting to see FB posts on spiritual topics. I have one acquaintance in particular — an extremely liberal man who hasn’t gotten over the fact that the 1960s are over 🙂 — who keeps posting about how Jesus was a radical, a (lower-case) communist, a liberal. Others are of an eastern religion/New Age orientation; others are Christian but prone to posting quotes by the likes of Joel Osteen who more often than not misses the mark.

Off to work early today, lots to do plus we had a long staff meeting last week in which we were told to take it all up a notch — or two, or three. Pray for my energy and attitude, the current ‘regime’ is not one of my favorites. 😦 😦

  6. Oh, and back to religion on FB, I also have a friend (we go back to elementary school days and Girl Scouts) who is a Christian and also a (sometimes) outspoken supporter of gay marriage (as being the right thing to support for both for society and within the church).

I gently suggested on one of her posts about a month ago that there were other views within the church on that matter and one of her ‘friends’ (whom I don’t know, have no idea if she was even a Christian, but I doubt it) became unhinged & took me apart limb-by-limb in comment after comment. So I generally refrain from commenting on that issue.

But, of course, I suppose that’s the goal, isn’t it? Getting us to simply refrain from commenting.

  7. I wonder what Jesus meant when He said we would be persecuted for our belief. We often say we know nothing about persecution because we are warm and cozy in our homes, but persecution is more than “just” being torn limb from limb. It includes being bullied with words for expressing our belief. Speak up, Donna! He is listening and your reward is to come.

  8. I almost forgot also about the avowed atheist who also is posting his thoughts today about who Jesus was (a ‘good role model’ who was a political and social liberal). Oy.

  9. No decorations.

It’s beautiful outside here, but a little windy. 🙂

Exactly what Mumsee said Donna. They have no rational argument so they attack and allege. Dissent will not be tolerated by the intolerant left.

  10. No decorations for any holiday outside. Not much inside either except a few snowflakes for winter and a turkey for thanksgiving. Too many people have tacky inflatable decorations near us so we keep it low key. And all the Easter decorations forget about what the holiday actually is supposed to be!

  11. No decorations, though I may put up my Easter flag if I ever buy a flag pole holder.

Meanwhile, I’m in Password Hell today, changing everything because of that security flaw. Sigh. 10 changes. 😦

  12. I don’t put any decorations outside. I put a few inside, if I know I will have company. I haven’t even thought of it yet. I think that is because we have been gone from home so much in the last month. It may also be because of the three foot snow drift I look at each morning. I doubt that, though, as we often have snow for Easter.

I go back and forth on what to post on fb. It is not a good place for real debate. I have a couple of relatives that attack relentlessly and I don’t have time to keep going on and on about things we already have beaten to death. One is completely irrational, but never quits. Her debating skills are horrible. Most is just name-calling, insinuation about character, changing the subject or accusing of lying. She demands proof, but never gives it, unless it is from a questionable website that she alone thinks in unbiased. It is not just me, however, I know several who no longer comment on her posts. In fact, mainly only one person will still beat her head against that wall. I think it is a lot like real life—others know everyone else does not believe such nonsense.

OTOH, I refuse to be shut-up about what I think is most important. The good thing is that I think more carefully before I post.

I also pray about it more. What is ‘throwing our pearls before swine’? What is ‘speaking the truth in love’? Jesus spoke one way when out among the crowds. He taught the deeper things to his select few. There are various levels of relationships. We may have them all on fb, unless we have divided everyone into groups. This makes questions like this not quite as easy as we may think.

  13. We discussed this in Bible study last week. I would not put anything on Facebook, that is not who I am there. But, in person, what are some gentle comments you might be willing to make. Donna, you didn’t quote what you said, but I like that you brought up that there were other views.

  14. I learned, what? 11 years ago when we started blogging with WorldMagBlog, that you have to be very careful what you write because people don’t always catch your tone. I decided after reading several vigorous go-rounds, that I would turn the other cheek and not cast pearls before swine. I’d also try to stay positive.

That’s served me well here and there, and I transferred the attitude over to FB. I rarely if ever post anything political there–it’s just too complicated. I merely pass along things I think are interesting or that I’ve encountered in research. Well, most of you already know. 🙂

Or, if I do see something I have to share, I try to mitigate things by not necessarily endorsing the post. Seems to work. My relatives are all still speaking to me.

I feel cowardly sometimes, however. 😦

  15. I guess what I am thinking is, if you would say it to your neighbor, go ahead and say it on the computer. But in the same way. Not to cause offense with your words but realizing the Truth behind your words may cause offense. And they are not actually hating us, but He Who sends us.

My area appears to be children. Not everybody has the same area. I feel strongly about how we treat children and will speak up about that. Other areas, I may let go. But ideally, even in my area, my words need to be spoken clearly and in Truth. Not that I should not debate or even argue, but I need to always remember Who I am representing and not let my emotions get in the way of my words. Now, to get to applying that bit of sage advice…

  17. I have recently gotten active on Linkedin. I am enjoying the helpful content posted there. Facebook is more on a personal level that does not appeal so much to me. I do Twitter, too, and like its efficiency.

  18. Linkedin is geared more for fostering and growing job and career connections, I think. I may make more use of that in the future, depending on what happens at the paper.

My problem with speaking out too much on FB is that my account is used also for posting stories and so it’s somewhat work-related. I have a lot of ‘friends’ who are random folks in the community, including some gay connections. So while I do share about my faith, I’m especially careful about politically-charged issues like gay marriage in large part due to the connection I have there with representing my newspaper.

Even if I now created a separate ‘professional’ page, it would still be probably impossible to shift people over and to completely separate the private from the public ‘me.’

Thanks to Janice (on the prayer thread) for the prayer for my work situation. I’m really feeling beaten down (we all pretty much are feeling that way).

  19. I can’t remember where I saw it, but it sounds like fiction writers make more use of Facebook and nonfiction writers do more with Linkedin. I suppose that makes sense because many nonfiction writers are professionals in the business world and would be using Linkedin more for the business arena. I guess that is what draws me to it since I have the business background. I am amazed at how quickly I have been able to grow my connections on Linkedin. I have not found Michelle on Linkedin but her husband is on it. Maybe that is because she is a fiction writer?

  21. Said a prayer for you a little while ago, Donna.

This was the day Emily & R were supposed to go back to court, but her lawyer got a continuance because they are working things out with his guidance.

At their meeting last week, R started off in a belligerent manner, claiming he wanted his home to be Forrest’s primary residence, & to have him more than half the week. The lawyer pointed out that he’d only taken Forrest twice over the past month, & said that if they went to court, a judge would not give him more time with Forrest, & would order him to pay child support.

Emily has given up any thought of getting child support in order to have R’s cooperation in other areas. She’s fine with that.

So, as it stands now, R is supposed to have Forrest two overnights a week, & for much of the day after the overnight (Wed. into Thurs., & Fri. into Sat.). I’m hoping he’ll be more consistent this time. Of course, if/when he gets a job, this may change.

  22. This is a bit selfish on my part, but please pray that when R does get a job, he’ll have Saturdays off. (His previous jobs have often included Saturdays.) That’s Emily’s long day at school, so it’s an extra-long day of babysitting.

  23. Just checking in to say hello to Jo. I was just thinking about all the program planning you just finalized. Is it just for the year ahead or is it what you will be able to use year after year with just some tweaks?

When I was attending those committee meetings at the state level concerning Common Core I was surprised to find out that none of the counties were coordinated in their implementation of it. So it strikes me as a joke that the Feds think they can control what all the schools in our nation does when the state does not control what is done on thd county much less the individual teacher level. The Feds will just end up driving more teachers out of their occupation because of the additional layer of hoops to jump through.
