Our Daily Thread 3-28-14

Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from me.

On this day in 1797 Nathaniel Briggs patented a washing machine.

In 1834 the U.S. Senate voted to censure President Jackson for the removal of federal deposits from the Bank of the United States.

In 1854 the Crimean War began with Britain and France declaring war on Russia.

In 1885 the Salvation Army was officially organized in the U.S.

In 1933 the Nazis ordered a ban on all Jews in businesses, professions and schools.

And in 1979 a major accident occurred at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. A nuclear power reactor overheated and suffered a partial meltdown.

Today may or may not be this lady’s birthday. Wiki just says 1957, but another says today. So we’ll go with it. 🙂

That was from Bill Gaither’s show. Today is also his birthday.

Both are from GaitherVEVO

And for some reason I have these guys stuck in my head. 🙂

Anyone have a QoD?

  1. Good morning! It was fun to watch the threads go up one by one. I haven’t seen that in a while. The news thread was up when I came here, and refreshing the page brought the prayer thread, then the daily thread. I’ll have to refresh now and see what the header is today.

two comments before 9pm, already a busy day
I’m exhausted after spending all day at a boys basketball tournament at New Tribes/Lapilo in Goroka – time for some sleep
    oh, we won the tournament!!

  3. By the end of the day, I might be on YouTube, if I can get a good recording of Beethoven’s Pathetique in my practice today, and figure out how to upload it. I’ll send you a link, AJ, if that happens. Thanks for your offer to post it here.

Along those lines, here’s a QoD: When was the last time you did something for the first time, and what was it that you did?

  4. Good Morning, Y’all!

Rainy day here in west GA. Last day of school before spring break…the kids are wound up. Pray for safety for all and survival for the faculty!

Nice pic, AJ! I find myself eager to see the “wandering views” each morning!

A cartoon in “Family Circle”. The kid asks his dad, “”Daddy, was there ever a time when people thought you were cool?”
Never for me. My buddies in the AF thought I was square because I didn’t like their music.
Becky, oldest GD, said I am a “dork”. I never knew what that meant.
    Which means that I’m a dork. 😆

  6. Yeah, it’s Friday, all right. And it couldn’t come sooner.

As for the QoD: I went to Niagara Falls and New England for the first time last summer.

Oh, and for all you NCAA basketball fans- How about those Wildcats!! I didn’t get to watch it, but had it on radio. I fell asleep when Arizona was behind but gaining. I wish I could see the last 5 minutes. The report sounds like it was exciting. Now to beat Wisconsin.

  7. Another first for me was talking to prison chaplains (for the article). That was very intrresting. Some prisons don’t allow hardback Bibles for security reasons. I did not get all the details about why.

  8. Friday! 🙂

We had our newsroom open house for the community last night which all of us kind of dreaded, what with having to clean off our desks (which, believe me, was no small task — I threw out several old files & some massive environmental reports for projects I’ve written about in the past) and wear (a-hem) ‘dorky’ name tags.

But it was actually rather enjoyable, nice to talk to people who still love the paper despite all our downsizing through the years. I also met some elected officials from other cities I don’t usually cover and got a few story tips. And I chatted with a mom and her son (about 8-9 years old) who attend a large church in the area. She home schools & is thinking of joining up with some of the home school classes our church offers (apparently we have a good & fairly widespread reputation for our homeschool offerings and networking opportunities, drawing families from other churches around the area).

Another woman was excited to meet me because we’re FB ‘friends’ which was very sweet.

So all in all, a worthwhile outreach for the paper, I would say.

Today, it’s back to work to file some stories.

But you should see how nice my desk looks now. 😉

  9. Can any of the rest of you watch those videos? When I click on it, it says it is VIVO and is restricted. That happened when I put the Gathers “Burdens are Lifted at Calvary”. but many of you said you could watch it.

  10. Actually, at work, we had to clean our desks. We worked with classified material and it had to be secured before we left every evening, or any other time we were absent for any time.

  11. I watched one of the videos, with no problem, Chas.

That does not sound good, Michelle. Glad you could get out, though. Although, it seems like it may be a good place to be stuck. 😉

I tried a few new foods, recently. One was catfish, which I had never eaten before. I was pleasantly surprised. We were at a TN state park buffet, which makes it easy to take a small amount of things you have not tried. I am usually not a buffet fan, since I seldom eat enough to make it cost effective. Also, I find it easy to over-eat. I managed to get my money”s worth without over-eating at this one.

I also was able to see daffodils growing wild in the woods. I had never seen that before. I have many planted, but had never seen them growing wild in the ditches, fields and woods. I also had never heard them referred to as buttercups. We have buttercups, but it is a completely different plant.

My children and grandchildren have made me experience many things I have not done before. I learned more about soccer and wrestling, because of them.

I have been learning to quilt with my sewing machine. I got a new machine a few years ago. Since it is computerized, I had to learn many new things to do the simplest

  12. AJ- I think Wiki has it wrong. It says Evie’s first English language album was in 1972 at age 16, which would put her birth year at 1956. But the article that quote is linked to is from March 2005 and says she was 47 at that time, which would mean she was born in 1958, or later than March of 1957. That is one problem with Wikipedia- it is impossible to prove what is correct there. Of course, we can’t ask her her age since we are not allowed to ask a woman that question.

At any rate, she was/is a wonderful singer, probably my all time favorite female vocalist.

  14. Remember I mentioned that the McKs said they’ll be out by the end of the month, & that we scheduled a carpet cleaning appointment for April 2? I went upstairs today to take a little lookie, & guess what?

Not as bad as it was a couple weeks ago, but still a lot of stuff everywhere, scattered over the floors. It looks like someone ransacked the place, throwing things willy-nilly.

Emily says that if there is still stuff there on Tuesday morning, she’s going to move it all down to the front porch. We need to give those carpets a good vacuuming before Matt comes on Wednesday to clean them.

In other news, R actually picked up Forrest today as he was supposed to. He was 2 1/2 hours early, but at least he told Emily he was coming early. (But he forgot his car seat for Forrest, & had to borrow Emily’s.)

Praying a hedge of protection around my little guy, in every way – physically, mentally/emotionally, & spiritually.

Emily & Chrissy are getting ready for the wedding tonight. They both are going to look so pretty & fancy! Chrissy said with all this prep, she feels like she’s getting married. 🙂

  15. We got a ding in the windshield of our rental car and so Hertz had us fill out a police report. (Have now spent over an hour on the phone with insurance companies, etc, sigh). My daughter lost her driver’s license on the beach and the only way to get on the plane was with a police report documenting it.

No big deals, but it made for a good story! 🙂

Meanwhile, out in our soggy backyard, Daniel, my handy guy who practically rebuilt the last house, is putting in a gray water system so we can use water from the washing machine to water the flower bed on the other side of the wall.

I’ve just got him today because finally, after all these years, our 26 year old great guy landed his dream job. He starts on Monday at Industrial Light and Magic (Lucas’ former company that brings you such elegant–or not–movies)! We’re all excited out here. 🙂

  16. I like the looks of a neat desktop. Too bad I hardly ever have one — it’s one of those flat surfaces in the house that seems to call out, “Put that thing down here.” 😉

Rehearsal went pretty well this morning. After a little spot work on part of the slow movement, I played straight through the two movements I’m performing, without the camcorder running. Then 3rd Arrow taped me on the second run-through, which went better, as I wasn’t quite as nervous. We played back the tape, and after listening to it, there was still about 15-20 minutes before the next performers were to arrive for practice, so I told daughter, “Let’s record one more version.” (It takes me just a little over 10 minutes to play through both movements.)

The third run-through (second taping) was going quite well (I was the most at ease that time around and was playing more expressively) when a couple minutes from the end of the piece, I heard the next performers coming up the stairway to the performance hall. It is on the third floor in a historic building, with old, creaky stairs and all that good stuff, and the two ladies who were arriving were chatting away on their way upstairs. So I’m playing, 3rd Arrow is still taping, and I’m thinking, “Great — this is the best run-through and we’re going to hear voices and footsteps on the tape!”

Well, we played back that last taping at home, and guess what? Nothing was audible but the piano. Yay!

    That’s the good news.

As far as uploading to YouTube, well, we found out that first we need a cable to upload the video from the camcorder to the computer. Ours is an older model camcorder, and we either never got a cable to go with it, or have misplaced it. I sent 1st Arrow to the electronics stores in our area, and they don’t have a compatible cable. However, we found one online and ordered it, so hopefully it’s the right one and we’ll be able to finish this uploading process 3-10 days from now. 😉

So…eventually AJ will be getting a link to my video, Lord willing. Thank you for all the encouragement from those of you who have indicated an interest in seeing it!

  18. Whew. End of a busy week at last. And my desk is still relatively clear, though I had 3 stories to write today. Newsrooms are notoriously jumbled stacks of notebooks, papers, government reports, daily newspapers going back weeks or even months, pens, pencils, pens, pencils, pens … highlighters, pens … each buried in layers.

My journalism teacher tells the story of a new publisher at their old paper (this would have been in the 1960s I guess) who walked into the newsroom, stretched out his arm and swiped everything on the star reporter’s desk into the trash. I forget what ensued, but it was quite an uproar from what I remember of the story.

Looking forward to the piano video!

  19. Thanks, Donna. 🙂

Fun story about the publisher swiping everything off the desk and into the trash. He’d find plenty of flat surfaces around my house to do that to.

And maybe he might have something to say about that previous sentence ending with a preposition? 😉
