On this day in 1788 Georgia became the 4th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
In 1842, in Fairmount, PA, the first wire suspension bridge was opened to traffic.
In 1872 Brigham Young, the 71-year-old leader of the Mormon Church, was arrested on a charge of bigamy. He had 25 wives.
In 1921 the first religious broadcast on radio was heard on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh, PA, as Dr. E.J. Van Etten of Calvary Episcopal Church preached.
In 1929 the United States and Canada reached an agreement on joint action to preserve Niagara Falls.
And in 1935 Bruno Richard Hauptmann went on trial for the kidnap-murder of Charles Lindbergh’s baby. Hauptmann was found guilty and executed.

Re: Brigham Young, if the history of the Mormons interests you, I highly recommend the book, “The Mormon War” by Brandon Kinney. It’s hard to believe anyone could be a Mormon if they read that book.

My Mormon grandmother was born 109 years ago.
The Christmas tree went out yesterday, I’m back to the gym, my daughter returns to college, I get the broadband back (!) and I hope to spend the day thinking, praying and getting organized for the year. I go back to work tomorrow.
It’s 34 degrees at the moment, clear and expected to get to 70. The days have been beautiful, but we’re all wishing for a change.
Bone dry out here. in 2013 we had 8 inches of rain total. 32 is the norm. They’re talking water rationing beginning soon. We’re not doing anything to our new yard this year unless I see rain. It will give me more time to think and consider just what I want to do–a blank slate except with grass.
Not sure what 2014 will hold; 2013 was pretty much a whirlwind.

Michelle, the official total for Hendersonville was 74 inches. We wish we could have given some of the spring rains to you. It kept the farmers out of the fields and cost millions in crop damage.

When I was growing up, we were usually the last to put up the decorations, and the last to take them down. I guess being the only Puerto Ricans in a mostly Anglo neighborhood had something to do with it. Dad would go on December 23 or 24 and get one of the remaining trees on the lot. And we would wait until January 6 to take it down. Most of you think of that day as Epiphany, but in the Spanish speaking world, it is called the Feast of the Three Kings. My dad told of his father as a boy putting a shoe on the doorstep along with water and hay for the camels. In the morning there would be gifts in the shoe. Obviously small gifts, mind you. Now-a-days, most Hispanics in the US follow the Santa Claus/Christmas Day tradition.

It was -28 here this morning and the thermometer is just a few feet from the house. I am so glad my husband does not have to work outside in this weather. Believe it or not, there are many who do and not just public safety officials. The cold makes everything more difficult.
Today I will put the Christmas things away. Always a little sad, but as one of my daughters pointed out: The room will look much more spacious.
That would be the biggest blessing for me, too, Chas!

I like the color. They’re making cars that color now, which I love — sort of a muted/mulled gray/green/blue. I like it.
We’re having a heat wave with temperatures in the high 70s and almost 80 some days. No rain in sight, as michelle said.
Back to work for me, but then what’s different since I worked almost all day yesterday.

This has been our most rainy vacation ever. It is pretty chilly and will go down in the 40’s by tommow
My husband said the breakfast we had this morning may have been his best ever. Our whole family got involved in cooking hash browns, eggs, and bacon. Simple fare but cooked to perfection by my husbands standards. I showed my husband the secret of browning the potatoes and onions on one side, then flipping them and adding some water and covering them to steam them for a bit, and then letting the water cook out so the second browning can occur. You know what they say about not teaching old dogs new tricks? I am thinking my husband will be motivated by the new tracks his taste buds made to his brain to learn more cooking tricks.

Speaking of puzzles, which we were, I learned something absolutely astounding a couple of years ago. We had a Canadienne visiting us, and I learned that those people actually look at the box when doing a puzzle! Is that crazy or what?
I usually have one going down in the atrium and another up in the schoolroom for those down moments. It takes me a long time to get one done so apparently there are not that many down moments. Anyway, I just started one I received as a gift a few years ago and put together then. It is the fifty states names with the state flowers and birds. So it is sort of like looking at the box, because I do know the state names and the alphabet. Call me a cheater.

Aj- Keep the color for now. It’s not blue like most websites have as a default, and the red and green get old after a while. Muted colors are fine after all the brightness.
As for the b-ball coach, it may be that he thinks Alabama is going to lose and wants to spare all the players form the dismay until after the practice. Or use the time as motivation. I can see this happening: the coach tells them, “The sooner I think you’re ready for the next game the sooner you can watch the Tide. I’ve got it recording on TiVo in the office and we’ll watch it after practice.”

Speaking of curious: Seven year old boy, as you know, cannot count to five. But he can add and subtract up to ten and probably further. He can write the numerals to one hundred and on. Well, he cannot put sounds to letters, cannot identify a, e, i, o, u, though he can recognize a few consonants. Like his name and his little sister’s name though he does not name the letters. Today, he was regifted a light coloring gizmo and promptly wrote out my name and his name and his sister’s name in cursive. Nice cursive. Nobody has taught him cursive or how to spell mom or his sister’s name. What goes on in that brain? We hope to continue to find the keys that will help him communicate.

Mumsee, that is fascinating to see what are the specially designed keys to open his brain for what we consider to be normal usage. I know Montessori used sand paper letters for feeling their shapes. When I worked some with preschoolers I would use cooking a lot such as w for waffles. Pour syrup in the shape of W and maybe point out the W on the waffle box. J for jello, etc. Think of it as teaching through the stomach.Sorta like I am trying to teach my husband. 🙂

I took Cindi to work this morning. The Temperature was 17, A cold front came through last night complete with high winds. The cat was telling me all about it this morning. His box is in the garage and there is a pet door which allows him access. Apparently he was too cold to open the pet door so I had to open the garage door for him. I guess he wanted to share the cold air with me. 🙄

Henderson calls itself “the city of four seasons” and has a blvd named “Four Seasons Boulevard” and the mall, such as it is, is “Four Seasons Mall”.
There are surely four distinct seasons here. Two months and spring comes.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, claims five seasons and has a convention center with that name. I think the seasons are spring, summer, fall, winter and more winter.

Sorry, for the poor writing. I’m in the car on the Smsrtphone which makes me even less smart than a born blonde and southern gal. 😉 Wi-fi has issues at our unit, maybe from all the rain. Better connectivity in the car but I am not use to texting and driving and this format highlights that fact.

No, Alabama is not playing the best. It has been funny to watch some of the “fans” say that maybe Saban SHOULD have gone to Texas. Come on. He was bound to run into a few snags, but Alabama fans have gotten so used to winning that they can’t be gracious about a loss or a bad game.

We’re supposed to get down to -7°. On Monday the high is supposed to be only -2°. The weatherman said it hasn’t been that cold for 17 years here. Maybe I won’t be going back to school Monday. If the windchill gets too low (-20° or so), they have to call it off.
