Good Morning!
21 Days Until Christmas!
On this day in 1783 Gen. George Washington said farewell to his officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York.
In 1812 Peter Gaillard patented the power mower.
In 1945 the U.S. Senate approved American participation in the United Nations.
In 1980 the bodies of four American nuns slain in El Salvador two days earlier were unearthed. Five national guardsmen were later convicted of the murders.
And in 1991 Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson was released after nearly seven years in captivity in Lebanon.

Quote of the Day
“During the holidays, everyone needs a break from studying for exams and Christmas shopping. I wanted to put together a diverse tour that rocks in many musical directions but always points to Christ.”

So I guess the first one today is TobyMac.
And never let it be said that I can’t take a hint. 🙂
And it’s Dennis Wilson’s birthday.
And it’s also Gary Rossington’s.

Went to a holiday brass concert last night that was fabulous. It included three pieces by a public high school steel drum band and they played [horrors!] three Christian songs (Away in a Manger, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and I can’t remember the third one). Somebody should do something about THAT!

Here’s a question of the day: how many e-mail addresses do you have, and how do you distinguish them? (Do you use each one for a specific purpose? Do you check them all regularly?)
I have a “main” one that I check several times a day.
I also have two old ones (with different internet providers) that at one point in the past were my main one, and one of those I check occasionally just to make sure I don’t have any mail, and one is one I now use for correspondence with companies (e.g., amazon.com), so I check it periodically.
I have one that I set up specifically for World magazine, so that I could post it online without worrying about spam; I rarely check that one anymore.
I have one that I set up specifically for dealing with editing clients, individuals; I try to check it every other day. (The companies I edit for have my primary account, since what they send me might be important.)
And finally I have one that I set up specifically for “junk” e-mail. If a company asks for my e-mail address and I’m willing to be on their mailing list, that’s the one I give them. So if my husband and I want to go out to eat, I check that e-mail account for coupons. But it isn’t the e-mail address I use for a business whose e-mails I actually want to read, since e-mails in that folder tend to get lost until I specifically go looking for them.
It looks like that is six. And yes, I do sometimes get them confused; I forget who I gave which account. (If I’m online and a website wants to know my e-mail address, I have to stop and think, since depending on the “importance” of the relationship when I set up the account, I could have given them any of several addresses.)

Wow, Cheryl, do they forward to your “main” one?
I have the same one I’ve been sharing with my husband for 17 years, one with just my name for business, an old one with my name I seldom use, a “junk” email address for when I have to provide an address to get something, and a work email address.
Work and the 17 year-old one are used continually, of course.

In other news, I use the public library a great deal. It was my sanity savior through all those years of child rearing. I’m delighted with my new house because I can walk to the library in 12 minutes. I drive home and walk, I’m so giddy with the experience! 🙂
I use the reserve feature a lot–always have tons of books on reserve–and I manipulate it by putting books on hiatus in the hold system while I read what I currently have. I learned this trick 10 years ago when Reading Lolita in Teheran showed up after a seven month wait, the week my son got married at Christmas–and I could only have it for 7 days.
I read like a madwoman until day six when I realized, “hey, it’s only a quarter a day, why don’t I slow down and turn it in a few days late?”
I then discovered the hiatus feature and I can manage the timing a little better.
When I got back from Europe, I thought I’d have more time in my schedule so I released several books out of hiatus. Seven books showed up last weekend, along with a two-volume inter-library loan from UC Davis. Nine books to read in three weeks at Christmas time.
The UC Davis books–Capital Cities during WWI–were 500 pages long each!
I have 100 Christmas cards to write as well . . .
I zipped through the books yesterday, scribbling down page numbers and I’ll just have a young person I know scan them for me and read later. This is craziness–but it also seems to be my life . . . 🙂

Cheryl’s QoD,
I have my regular Verizon one for myself and the church prayer chain which I do. I also have a Hotmail one for this site. And I have a Yahoo one, but that’s only used for fantasy football. My wife has at least 2, a Hotmail and work one.

Cheryl, I have one and we have one. We also have four phone numbers, one for each cell phone and a land line. And a mail box.

Michelle,
The NFL and NBC are showing their hypocrisy here. They’ll run ads for the latest movie releases, a couple which will be violent. But this one that’s not gets banned. Ridiculous.
But think of it this way. By denying them ad time for millions of dollars, they shoot themselves in the foot. (they’d probably ban that term too) Now, instead of the NRA paying them millions to run it, the NFL/NBC unwittingly gave them millions worth of advertising for free. Because they denied it, and the ruckus it raised, the ad is running all over the internet. Just as many will watch it, but it doesn’t cost them a thing. That’s a win for the NRA, and a loss for PC stupidity. Double bonus.

I have too many email addresses. With a gmail account or if you filter through Outlook you can have emails go into specific folders so that you are not over run by coupons and junk email.

I have one business e-mail and one personal e-mail. I use the “filter” feature on both to screen stuff I don’t want and put others into specific folders so that I don’t need multiple e-mail accounts.
For years I only had my work e-mail but recently got the personal one to wean friends and relatives from the work one in anticipation of retiring some day (I turn 65 later this month but have no plans to retire as of now). The funny thing is that the personal one had obviously just been abandoned by someone named Larry with my same last name and I get a lot of interesting stuff that was intended for Larry.

Another Question: What do you think of the latest reports of Pope Francis sneaking out of the Vatican at night dressed as a regular priest and ministering to the homeless?

On yesterday’s “News & Politics” there was an item about the ACLU suing over the lack of notification for abortions. It included this statement, “The lawsuit was filed in the case of a pregnant woman whose life was at risk from premature labor.” Does anyone know how a woman’s life can be at risk from premature labor?

I have a few email addresses, 2 “general” personal ones that I check several times during the day (including my original, very first aol address).
I recently switched internet providers so set it up to where all the emails going to my old cable address (my primary one for many years) forwarded to a new gmail account. So far the old cable account is still up (I figure eventually they’ll take it down?). But I like the gmail filter feature, too.
I’m bad about killing out old emails, though, so my inbox gets way to big.
I also check my work email frequently, of course, constantly on weekdays; but on weekends I try to ignore it. That’s not too hard to do most times. 😉
Kim, I heard that tale about the pope wasn’t true, they said just to leave the Vatican complex takes literally an international clearance. Nice thought, though.
I like this pope, but I do wish he (or the reporting on him) could be a bit more clear when it comes to expressing the fullness of the Christian faith. Time will tell whether he’s actually departing from orthodoxy in some areas — or whether some of his remarks are just being expressed in ways that they get mis-reported. All my liberal non-believing friends love him for now, anyway.
While personally appealing, he has said some things that I think need more explanation. So the jury still seems to be out among conservative Catholics and Protestants.

I have one e-mail address, and TSWITW doesn’t do computers. (I called her in just a few minutes ago to read an e-mail.)
I took a computer course. Last class yesterday. I asked about updates. Specifically, reminders through e-mail. An example:
PDF Support….space. (Blog doesn’t allow spaces)…Your PDF activation is expiring (Final attempt)
She said that we should update when the system shows up on your screen. But we should never respond to e-mails for updates. These are from people who want into your system for some reason. It may only be that they want to confirm that a live person as at this address. But they could also put virus on the computer.
So, according to her. If you get something through e-mail that says you should do something to your computer. Delete it..
There is also a scam going around where someone calls on the phone. Say’s he’s from Microsoft and you have a problem. You go to your computer and follow instructions.
Just hang up. Don’t discuss it. Hang up.

emails: I now have two as the old one has a problem and is probably too buggy. I got a second one a few years ago when I was trying to follow ajisuun on her blog but she came back for a season and I forgot my email info on that account. I imagine my children set one up when they decided I needed facebook (which I have since locked myself out of by mistake but it is fine) but I never saw it.

The temperature is beginning to drop here in the city. Tomorrow night, they are expecting 4-6 inches of snow. I have to travel this weekend to Michigan to train some people on programming a DC Drive next week. Should be fun. The company got me a 4 wheel drive rental to make the trip. Tonight Cindi and I are going to Chickasha to look at the Parade of lights. http://www.chickashafestivaloflight.com/

My first email address was with hotmail which I set up at the library before we had internet at home. It has always been my main account. When we had AOL service at home I got a second email account through AOL. I have not checked it since I got the smart phone. I don’t know if they cancel it if it never has activity.

Husband had a tax software update conference in Charlotte so today we visited the Billy Graham Library. It was a wonderful time to see it since it was all decorated for Christmas. They even had the living nativity animals on site so we got to see a camel and lots of other cute animals. I think they will have to replant some grass considering how some were grazing. We saw the beautiful prayer garden with the grave of Ruth Bell Graham. It was a really worthwhile activity for today.

I have several email addresses. Mrs L and I have the family one, as well as another for taking surveys. Plus our provider allows extra addresses so use one for blog stuff like sending AJ the weekly football picks. I also have 2 work accounts, one for the high school and one for the community college. Since that one used to be terrible and would not allow Spaanish special characters, I got a gmail and have it check the college email. I may start using it for the google plus feature.
