  1. I read in today’s Times-News that there is a scam going around in which people receive calls that they have won $2.5 million from Publisher’s Clearing House. It is a scam and people in Henderson County have lost money. One person lost $7,000. I recently got a call telling me that I had won $2.5 million from Readers Digest. I didn’t talk to him.
Be aware. Nobody is going to call you on the phone offering you money. It doesn’t work that way.
I get calls often offering me such opportunities.
We need to be aware of these scams. That’s what they are.
    SCAMS

My dad would have been taken in by one of those. But he called me and I said, “Dad, nobody is going to call you on the phone and send you money.”
    It doesn’t work that way.

From a letter to the editor in today’s Times-News
“The next time you hear that annoying crying child in your checkout line, chances are it’s just hungry. Thank a Republican for that.”
    He’s talking about food stamps.

  3. 🙂 Going to see grandchildren today. The youngest, a girl, has her first birthday Tuesday, so today we’ll have cake and ice cream in her honor. Of course, at that age she’ll not know what it is all about. D2, her mother, doesn’t give the children any kind of desert until the first birthday, so it has been fun watching them experience the treat.

😦 Common Core. We had all-day meetings yesterday on it. Few of the teachers like it and see it for what it is- just another government program to make educrats feel good that they are attempting to fix the problem., not seeing that they are making it worse. Why don’t they go back to what worked in the past instead of trying new things? I wish Reagan had been successful at getting rid of th Department of Education.

  4. Do you think anyone involved in Common Core has an actual, living child attending public school? Or even know a child, based on what I’ve been reading about the “literature” section? 😦

  5. 😦 Just found out my dad has been in the hospital for a week.

🙂 Just found out my daughter’s husband surprised her with a trip to the Virgin Islands for their belated anniversary. Belated as he has been off working, so they have not been together since their anniversary.

🙂 My youngest daughter was driving with two of her children to the zoo. Her four year old piped up, “Mom, I don’t want to die.” She was quite surprised and asked him to repeat what he said. He said it again and then, “I don’t want to go there?” Again puzzled, she asked him where he meant. He was talking about heaven.

She explained that there are only two places you go and how you go to heaven. He immediately wanted to pray to go to heaven and was so excited. Of course, he was probably happy to hear he did not have to go right away!

  6. Re Common Core: I doubt any of them have children in Public School.. When I was in graduate school, the woman who wrote the reading program and sold it to the county had been a first grade teacher for one year when she first graduated from colllege back in the 1960’s
    She also never had children.

  7. kBells, I don’t know. But they do. 🙂

Chas, I have an older friend, former journalist who’s on veterans benefits and has little else in the way of money, who got sucked into a computer scam that promised him hundreds of thousands of dollars — just for signing up and doing nothing.

I kept telling him it sounded bogus but he was convinced it was somehow legitimate. I don’t know if he lost any money — he surely had next to nothing to lose, after all — but after months of waiting expectantly for that big check in the mail, I think he finally gave up, he hasn’t mentioned it to me now in several weeks. It’s that old adage — if it sounds too good to be true …

    🙂 Saturday. Another busy week.

😦 Final story was a sad one about a local man who when his small plane crashed in western Colorado (he was on his way to a 2nd or 3rd home he and his wife had just purchased in aspen). I know his niece quite well. Took a couple days calling the sheriff & coroner in colorado; still don’t know the cause, but weather could have played a role.

😦 Found out I’d “capped out” on my vacation time (we no longer can see our accumulation of hours due to some computer system glitch they’ve been trying to fix for a year and HR doesn’t give us any ‘heads up’ if we’re getting close). When you cap out, you cease earning any new time. I lost 6+ days of vacation as it turns out. Won’t let it happen again, from now on I’m taking regular vacation weeks, regardless of how short-staffed we are. Two other people are in the same boat.

😦 Friend’s daughter who married a Muslim had to get rid of her two cats to appease his family. Seems household pets are forbidden, considered unclean. Broke her heart, she had to take them to a city shelter. Meanwhile, I watched “Not Without My Daughter” again last night. Chilling.

🙂 Rain. Not heavy, but rain nevertheless.

🙂 My Jeep is a bit cleaner. 🙂 But it does have dried-mud cat paw prints all over it. Annie likes to walk over it when it’s in the driveway.

  8. Wait ’till your friend’s daughter wants to get a dog.
You know, her husband can dump her by sayimg “I divorce you”” three times.

Marrying a Muslim is a very stupid thing for a woman to do.

  9. She loved her 2 kitties. 😦 I felt so bad hearing that, but she went into this with her eyes open (raised Catholic, but I suspect she’s converted to Islam by now though she may not have shared that with her parents).

  10. 😦 With “the holidays” coming upon us, I am feeling very sad about the estrangement from my brother’s family. It was last year at this time, when they managed to blow us off for both Thanksgiving (which had been at our house for several years) & our traditional Christmas Eve family get-together (at their house), that the realization hit me that my brother really doesn’t want anything to do with me & mine.

(Being a small family, & both brother & I married “only” children, we were all we had for family.)

🙂 The family I have in my own home. So very grateful for my husband Lee, daughters Emily & Christina, & “my little guy” Forrest. We have our tensions, but we generally get along very well, & enjoy each other.

  11. 🙂 Saw the first house with Christmas lights in our neighborhood tonight.

😦 Can’t get into the spirit yet. 😦

🙂 After taking Cowboy to the dog park, I went shopping & filled up the grocery bag with Thanksgiving stuff for the mission — now I just need to remember to grab it when I go to church tomorrow. I’ve set it right next to the front door, but that’s no guarantee for someone who would forget her head if it weren’t attached. I should have put it in the Jeep.

🙂 House looks better, I spent the morning getting rid of old bills & junk mail & magazines & catalogs that had accumulated. I also hung up a few seaters & jackets that I’d tossed here and there on the sofa and over chairs.

  12. Just got my standby tickets for Christmas with my son’s help today. So I will be in California for Christmas. 🙂
Of course, that means there has to be room on the flights for me! The first connection will be the hardest as I fly from here to Port Moresby to catch an early afternoon flight. These tickets are flexible, so If I miss a flight I can go the next day. or try to. Not sure that I am up for this much adventure. But it is worth it to see the family and even meet my newest granddaughter.

  13. We did have a lovely time yesterday, though. Nice to have my brothers and their families, my dad and stepmom, one of the grown children and his family (that would be the three grandchildren) and the neighbors. Lots of good food, good fellowship, and good fun. It is good to see what God has done and is doing and to express gratitude together. Even though my brothers and dad are not believers. They wish they were.

  14. Close your eyes, people. Two sixteens and a fourteen year old just returned with the deer the sixteen year old shot. Through the heart at three hundred yards. Instant death. Done well and done right. Good job.

Michelle, I live in Northern California. I will be in Grass Valley for Christmas. Not too far away. Not sure where I will be staying though or what may be available to drive. An adventure for sure.

  16. If you all are coming as far north as Mumsee, you might as well venture across the border, visit me and then swing down to 6arrows part of the world before heading home 🙂
