Our Daily Thread 10-1-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1880 Thomas Edison began the commercial production of electric lamps at Edison Lamp Works in Menlo Park.

In 1903 the first modern World Series took place between the Boston Pilgrims and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In 1908 the Model T automobile was introduced by Henry Ford. The purchase price of the car was $850.

In 1940 the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened as the first toll superhighway in the United States.

In 1961 Roger Maris (New York Yankees) hit his 61st home run of the season to beat Babe Ruth’s major league record of 60.

And in 1971 Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, FL. 🙂

On this day in 1880, John Phillip Sousa became the director of The United States Marine Band.

And it’s Andre’ Rieu’s birthday. I don’t understand him, but I like the music. 🙂

First, bagpipes and “Amazing Grace”.

And “Nearer, My God to Thee”.

  1. Oh, John Phillip Sousa, I am going to have to break the budget and listen to this one. However I may wait until morning as i don’t want to wake the neighbors!
Love your comments on the news AJ.
    did you sleep in??? 🙂
I kept watching for you. How does it feel to have someone halfway around the world waiting for you?

Yesterday, Elsa, the 99+ year old lady, asked if it’s fall yet.
    Is the government still running?
Does it matter? Rush says it doesn’t.
I had Mexican food at the Lions’ zone meeting last night and I think it reminded me early this morning. I’m not sure why, but I was awake from about three to five this morning.

  3. Good morning, Chas & Aj. Good evening, Jo.

Aj: I loved the bagpipes this morning! As a young child, I attended a school that had a bagpipe and drum band. I always get chills when I hear Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes. Thanks!

Chas: Sorry you were awake from 3-5. I’ve been wrestling with insomnia myself for the last few days….And, yes, I’ve tried melatonin and benadryl, to no avail…

  4. I just posted prayer requests for Becca on the prayer thread. If any of you are so inclined, could you please pray for her today? Thanks!

  5. Good morning. I put rain in my prayer journal yesterday for Jo.

I awoke early this morning, too, so my eyes are heavy about now. I need more coffee to bring some life into my foggy eyes. I got to the office early so I could leave early.

    I hope y’all have a good day!

  6. You can blame the government shut down on the Republicans or the Democrats if you like. Government shut down is a foreseeable event in a two party system. I also see it as an opportunity for the Democrats to finally learn to negotiate, and the Republicans to learn that the world won’t end if they stand up to the Democrats. So far the Democrats idea of negotiation seems to be to tell the other party to go to blazes.

As far as negotiation, I think it’s way past time for the Democrats to learn to negotiate, since they’ve passed a wildly unpopular bill that’s so bad even former staunch supporters are backing away and seeking waivers…

  7. Well, with IOS 7, I can’t really comment or link on this blog anymore, so you won’t hear from me until I can get to a keyboard . . .

I wrote (an hour ago), that I agreed with AJ about the cynical humor on Twitter. Really funny, but I had to leave lest my soul become too contaminated and I retweet too much!

God to love bagpipes–and they’re dangerous. See my post from a couple years ago: http://bit.ly/18oR1MK

And pray I resist temptation, soon!

  8. National Parks in Canada are still open! Come for a visit – you won’t be disappointed. The bear I saw this morning on my walk was definitely not on vacation! He was large!. Thankfully, he stopped, sized us up, and decided to disappear into the bush. Freaked me out!

  9. Good mo-rrrning Wanderers. The government may be closed, but the circus is still coming to town and will open on schedule. Today I’m going out to cover the tent raising of Cirque (coming to the port for the first time, it should be pretty visual with the venue going up next to to open sea in the outer harbor). And we’ll get to wear hard hats, which is always fun.

Last night I worked late doing a telephone interview with our local congressperson in Washington, D.C. It was still 2 hours before the ‘shutdown’ but the writing was pretty much on the wall by then.

This week’s turning into a juggle, somehow in the next day or so I still need to get to my vet’s to pick up some dog meds, but not sure if that’ll get done now. I may call them to see if they can mail it to me … Or just wait until Saturday and give it to them a week late.

My last weekend was so full and over-scheduled that I feel like I didn’t get to do some of those things I can usually take care of on days off.

  10. MiM,

The Obama admin actually changed their terminology for fed workers too. They didn’t want to hurt anyones feelings, so the terms “essential” and “non essential” are now considered Politically Incorrect. 🙄

And if 80% are still working, is it really shut down?

    http://www.businessinsider.com/government-shutdown-80-of-federal-employees-keep-working-2013-10

“They call it a “government shutdown.” But of about 4.1 million people who work for the federal government, about 80% will still be expected to show up for work.

We still don’t have an exact number of federal employees who won’t be working in a shutdown, but most press reports have been pegging the number around 800,000, the number who stayed home the last time the government shut down in 1996.

The roughly 3.3 million federal employees who will have to work fall into three main categories:”

  15. So the government shut down and I haven’t noticed anything different. I do agree with those who say elected officials should not get paid, or at least those directly involved in the budget process. If Harry Reid had to work without pay until he finally passed a budget, you can bet there would be one soon.

  17. I paid $3.80. But Jo clearly wins. Or loses in this case. 😉

I had a phone message tonight from my mom’s 2nd cousin’s 2nd cousin. Does that make sense? Anyway, they’re in Northern California and were calling me with questions about family history stuff (which I’m afraid I can’t help them with all that much).

But it sounds like my mom’s 2nd cousin is in a care facility so I really do need to get the information about that. She turned 90 in June and I’m feeling very guilty as I haven’t called her like I should have been doing. 😦 She tends to talk a super long time (our last conversation was 3 hours), so I admit I procrastinate about calling her for that reason.

But I feel like an awful person for not calling more than I have. 😦 😦

  18. Sixth Arrow has been reading and reading and reading to me. Yesterday I introduced her to the Christian Liberty Nature Readers, and since she loves nature so much and wants to be out in it a lot, she has firsthand experience with a lot of the things mentioned in the readers, so she’s eating those books right up. She started Book One yesterday and she’s already on page 108! Only 40 pages of text to go, and an approximately 15-page glossary after that, which I’m thinking she may want to read as well, even though we’ve been discussing the terms, which appear in bold print, as we come to them. So if you’re all wondering where I’ve been lately, it’s been a lot with 6th Arrow, in addition to everything else with the others. And a lot of time outside in this nice fall weather.

I’m also determined to finish sightreading all the Beethoven Piano Sonatas, a project I started several years ago as a when-I-have-time venture. Well, I’ve not made time for it much in a very long while, and I’m only four sonatas (twelve movements) from the end. So I decided this will be the month I will finish my project!

So…there is much to do, but I’m still reading here, praying for the prayer requests, listening to the music, but not commenting much. I’m usually too tired by the end of the day lately to talk much, but it’s a good tired, and I enjoy sitting in on the conversation here and just “listening”. Carry on. 🙂

of course I had to start at the back of the book!
okay, don’t tell, but I just purchased a cd with 40 books on it from Dave and Neta Jackson, daveneta dot com, this has all 40 of their Trailblazer stories on it, some of which are out of print. They included all formats on it for download. This one is a gift for family birthdays. I may have to purchase a kindle for them later.
okay, now I have to go search for the books 6 arrows mentions above.
