Our Daily Thread 9-17-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1778 the United States signed its first treaty with a Native American tribe, the Delaware Nation.

In 1787 the Constitution of the United States of America was signed by delegates at the Constitutional Convention.

In 1796 U.S. President George Washington’s Farewell Address was read before the U.S. Congress.

In 1862 the Battle of Antietam took place during the Civil War. More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing.

In 1937, at Mount Rushmore, Abraham Lincoln’s face was dedicated.

And in 1984 Reggie Jackson hit his 500th career home run. It was exactly 17 years from the day he hit his first major league home run.

  1. First?

I went to a prayer group meeting yesterday with other moms who have kids attending the local elementary and junior high. It seemed to be a good group of women. I’m excited about the prospect of making some new friends. We’ve been in this neighborhood for about 3 years now and I’ve had some difficulty finding a group of friends.

  2. I really enjoyed myself. We spent the majority of the time praying, with very little chit-chat, which I appreciated. I have a little bit of social anxiety and do much better when I have something specific to do, verses just hanging out. I found out that the principal at Becca’s elementary has been very supportive of this prayer group and was amenable to discussions surrounding “meet you at the pole.”

  3. Morning ladies.

It’s cool out this morning. It feels like Fall fell, or is in the process of falling.
I like it, I just wish it didn’t get dark so early and light out so late. But the temps are perfect. 🙂

  4. The reason it feels like fall is that it’s 60.5 degrees outside.

The brother of one of Elvera’s ancestors was killed at Antietam.
The park ranger who led our tour told us that the repeater rifel had been invented but Congress wouldn’t let the army use them because they were afraid they would waste ammunition.
Far fetched. But I believe him.

  5. It got into the high 40’s here last night. That’s cold when the inside and outside temperatues are the same. Sunny later today and nice and warm. I am making a mental list of some warmer items to bring back with me next time. Of course this is our late winter. August and September are our cold months. In January we might stay light until 7, but mostly it is always dark by 6;30 here.

  6. Good Morning Everyone. In Washington’s farewell address, he expressed his disdain for Political Parties. He felt they would destroy the Republic with partisanship. Do we a fulfillment of his wisdom?

  8. Good morning! I put prayers in my prayer journal over all the heavy duty requests from yesterday’s prayer thread.

It is cooling down here so I will feel more like cooking. I made Beef Lomein last night. That always makes my husband happy.

I took the car in for maintenance yesterdsy. I told a coworker how Toyota gives hourly updates but Honda did not. She told me that BMW sends pictues to your phone as they work on the car for their update system. One-up-manship at the dealerships. Who would have guessed? And a cup of coffee used to mean waiting in style!

  9. A couple of good stories from last night. Daddy J spent his military career as full time National Guard. One of the Guardsmen brought the bars that Daddy J had given him upon a promotion to put in the casket with him. He told the story of being at camp in 1991 and telling Daddy J that he didn’t feel well. Daddy J told him there was nothing wrong with him, so the man ran two miles. The next day he passed out. When he awoke he was in the hospital and had had his gall bladder removed.
Younger Son In Law told me about the day they took Daddy J to the hospital in the ambulance. Daddy J refused to leave the house. Finally SIL told him he would take care of Mama R that Daddy J should go to the hospital and take care of himself.
The difference between a man who could “inspire” for lack of a better word a sick man to run two miles and a man so tenderhearted that he was worried about taking care of his wife is very sweet to me.
Mama R will be difficult to care for going forward. She cannot be left alone for very much time. Being with her day in and day out, he waited on her hand and foot and took good care of her. He was worried about who would take care of her when he was gone.
I had forgotten to tell you that Daddy J and Mama R lost their son when he was 12 years old. His casket spray had been white carnations. Daddy J’s spray is also white carnations with 1 red rose for the son gone before, and 3 pink roses from his girls. I do love meaningful things like that.

  10. Good morning all! May I join the conversation? It is 54 degrees here with patchy fog. Fall is also on the way here, The broomweed have bloomed, and it is chile roasting season. 🙂

  11. Sweet, Michelle. May all go well.

It is up to 45 outside now and low 60’s in the house. Supposed to be warmer today, than it has been.

I was in a Mom’s in Touch group when my children were in school. It emphasizes very little chit chat. Time is precious and people are more willing to give it, when they know the meeting will not drag on and on. I have left bible studies, because they will drag on and on with endless chit chat and you are made to feel guilty if you leave early. One of them would go all day. I love to visit with people, but things were very out of balance. The bible got short shrift. I appreciated the prayer group and ladies. We also delivered some treats to the teachers and relayed to them we were praying. One of the women had a husband who was a teacher for years, so she was a good go between.

  12. This must be the weather blog. 56° this morning when I left the house. It’s nice not needing the a/c or heat. I would have the windows open at night, but Mrs L doesn’t like it that cool inside.

  13. RKessler,

How do you roast chiles? I have some really spicy ones from my neighbors garden and I want to roast and grind them. But the chiles are small and I worry I’ll just burn them. I suppose that would be fair, since they burn me when I eat them. Or should I just dry them and grind them?

  14. 59F outside right now, but headed for a beautiful 77F today. Great day to work on the house. Moving on to new eaves troughs and downspouts. I’ll finish up the siding while hubby starts the other.

I went to a ladies Bible study yesterday and was disappointed that we didn’t get the chance to chat and know each other a bit better. I’m still relatively new in a larger church and was hoping to be able to get to know some ladies a bit better. I agree that it’s important that the study be the focus, but I’m hoping we can spend a bit of time getting to know each other. Sometimes it’s hard to share personal prayer requests or issues if you don’t know the people with whom you are sharing.

  15. Weather blog! I don’t know what it is outside yet, but it *looks* like it’s in the 60s, overcast, very gray, very fall-like.

And, yes, it is getting awfully dark very soon now on my way home from work.

There are 3 different ways that I have used to roast chile.
    1. Roast them in the propane grill. Just put them on the rack and have the fire high. Turn them as they begin to blister. Be sure to wear safety glasses as they will explode at times when they become hot. Put them into a pot to steam. The peels should slip off easily in a few hours. I usually use a water bath canner or a turkey roasting pan.
    2. Roast them over a wood fire. This is my favorite method as I think it gives them a distinctive flavor.
Follow the same instructions as above.
    3. You can also blister them in hot oil. Turkey fryers work well. Lots more popping though.

After they have steamed I peel, seed, and chop them adding salt, garlic and pepper. I save some of the really nice big ones whole for rellenos. I put them in bags and into the freezer.

Red chile I boil, grind in a blender and then run through a sieve. I do that with both dried red chile and wet red. I then use that product with garlic, oregano, etc to make enchiladas, carne adovada, chile colorado etc.

Hope that gives you some ideas for utilizing yours. Now I am getting hungry….:-)

  17. Kim, so glad that they were able to have a military funeral.
You know, regarding carrying guns, I was in Israel years ago and there everywhere you go,you see young men with rifles slung over their shoulders. I understood that it is mandatory that the young go in the military and then they are given the rifles to carry with them when out of the service to help keep the country safe.

  18. Thanks, AJ, but I have only got the basic home page up so far. I am not doing the blog yet. I have a lot of things I am working on at the moment so that will be happening maybe in a month or two.

I am wondering if Paula might want a link to her blog on here. I would like to see it here if possible.

  19. kare2012, I agree that there is a happy medium with how much time to spend building relationships at a bible study. That is important. I was not suggesting we should not do that.

  22. The dog is her’s. But since she lives with me (more or less full time), I get to enjoy the dog’s company while explaining the importance of commitment and responsibility to a 15 year old girl while she practices poop and scoop. I have a dog and she learns to take responsibility — win-win (I hope)

  23. It can take a couple weeks for a new dog to show her personality. The first couple weeks are spent trying to get the lay of the land. Once they’re comfortable and have learned the routine, they generally become much more expressive (which also is when the problems can set in 🙂 )

    All worth it, though.
