On this day in 1862 the U.S. Congress authorized the Medal of Honor.

In 1864 U.S. President Abraham Lincoln witnessed the battle where Union forces repelled Jubal Early’s army on the outskirts of Washington, DC. 

In 1931 a major league baseball record for doubles was set as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs combined for a total of 23.

In 1960 the first Etch-A-Sketch went on sale. 

In 1984 Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale named U.S. Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York to be his running mate. She was the first female VP candidate to run on a major party ticket.

Since it’s Mr. Berle’s birthday, we’ll stick with him and his “Bosom Buddy” to start. The playback isn’t the best, but it’s old, so you have that.

    Back to the routine for me. The Y, Lions, Prayer Watch.
    Kinda busy day for me. Soon as ol’ slowpoke gets ready.
    Since it’s 12 July, it’s also Chuck & Linda’s 33rd anniversary.
    I noticed yesterday that women have a method of put-down that men can’t use.
    They put on that look, and say Really?

    I pray that we remember our peace is not found in what society offers and its values, but our true peace and values are found in the Word of God and Jesus Christ who reconcile us to God. The through Christ we have access to the Father and the Cross is not a symbol of hate but a symbol of forgiveness, grace, mercy and love.

  11. Does anyone else remember when they used to put fans in the back of pews in church? I remember that only women used them. But they did. The fans were usually furnished by some funeral home.

  12. Chas, I don’t remember fans in pews because I didn’t grow up in the church, but the new fans are the AC so women now have to bring sweaters to church in the summertime. But it is still only the women. Seems men can sit in their shirtsleeves in the icebox that is our church and not even notice. 😉

  13. Our church doesn’t crank up the AC too much, but maybe they should. It might keep women from wearing immodest apparel with half of their upper body and a lot of their lower body bare, like some of them do in the summer. Ugh.

  14. Chas- I remember the fans, but not that they were all from a funeral home. Ironic, though, as all too many church goers are dead spiritually. Sad.

    As far as the a/c being on so cold, it helps me stay awake when I am a little tired. If it’s too warm, then the sleepiness takes over. Colder air is more stimulating to keep me awake.

  15. I know about the fans Chas. On one hand I thought it was creepy they were from a funeral home and didn’t want to touch them and on the other it was hot. This was at Brightwater Methodist Episcopal outside of Needham, AL which is outside of Butler, AL

  17. Good Morning everyone….I remember the fans…my favorite was the one with Jesus the Shepherd, surrounded by a flock of sheep…staff in one hand and a lamb in the other….I see them in antique shops from time to time….
    The look….oh yes…I give the look sometimes…not to put down my husband…but to let him know of my displeasure…glasses go down on the nose and I look over the top of the glasses….he knows….and he usually laughs…. 🙂

  19. There is a Butler, Al. It’s at E37 on the map. It isn’t outside anything, it’s alone in the world. But probably a nice southern town.
    There has to be a Baptist church there.
    My map doesn’t have a Needham.

  20. My last church didn’t have ac, only ceiling fans. And even though we were a tiny congregation, no one could ever agree on what speed the fans should be set on. So one of our elders decided to have one side of the room with fast fans, the other with slow (usually ladies with set ‘dos liked the slower speeds).

    So I wound up switching pews to migrate to the “fast” side of the church. 🙂 Our hair blew around a little but we didn’t mind, it felt so much better than that stifling still air. Oddly, we still split up fairly evenly in terms of numbers on each side.

    (I remember one very warm Sunday after arriving at church and sitting beneath the fast ceiling fan — this was before they came up with their half-and-half solution — when the woman in front of me complained to the elder that it was on too high so he immediately turned it down. I think I may have shot him one of *those* looks we women have, but he didn’t see it. 🙂 )

    Anyway, we now have ac and they’re pretty good at keeping the temp just right I think, although the older woman I bring says it’s a bit too cold for her. And sometimes it tips just a *little* bit too warm and people start fanning themselves with their bulletins. 🙂 That’s the cue for whoever is in charge to crank the temp down a degree or two!

  21. I’m doing an unusual obit today — on a sea lion. He was dragged into our marine mammal rehab several years ago after being found on the beach. He was blind and very scarred up, they don’t know if it was from another beast or a propeller or what.

    Normally they might euthanize such a creature even at the rehab. But he turned out to be incredibly gentle and mellow, just a sweet big guy — which is what they dubbed him, Big Guy (they never “name” the animals they treat, but he was an exception).

    He had to be hand fed 3 times a day since he couldn’t compete with the other sea lions when fish was tossed into their pools. He became especially popular with those of us who visited the center from time to time.

    But they didn’t really have room for him — he’d gotten to be close to 800 pounds and stood over 5 feet — so he was transferred to a zoo in utah where he got a nice big pool and swank digs. And he found scores of new fans there.

    Anyway, he stopped eating about a week ago and while they were doing some tests on him he died — necropsy revealed he had a cancer that is common in sea lions. But he was in his early 20s, which is pretty much the full lifespan, so he had a very good run.

    Still, he’s left a lot of folks in both states very sad about his passing. RIP Big Guy.

  22. I remember the fans. Square cardboard with rounded corners and wooden handles, right?
    Our church is also very cold in the summer. We have a prayer shawl ministry and I made myself a shawl to use in church in the summer. I keep it in the trunk of my car so I always have it available. It doesn’t seem to hinder the few ladies who like to wear halter tops. Personally, I don’t even like to see sleeveless dresses in church. I’m guessing Cheryl is going to agree with me on that one.

  23. This being California and since our church is in the beach area, we have folks who will wear shorts and flip flops (esp guys) during the summer months. I think some of them must hit the surf right after service. 🙂

  24. But we also have older people who still wear suits (sans jackets in the summer, but with the ties still) and nice dresses with nylons. The rest of us dress somewhere in between.

  26. Linda, I am a very modest person by nature–I was surfing in board shorts before they became popular–but what is wrong with sleeveless? It is a sincere, if naive, question?

  30. I don’t mind sleeveless as long as they are modest (for example, not gaping armholes), but I am very happy that the teenagers in my current church are more modest than the ones in my previous church. Some of the outfits I saw there were way over the line.

    I’d rather wear nylons than not–I don’t like sweaty feet.

  31. It is said that one of the things people fear most is speaking in public. Overcoming that fear is a good thing. Getting the point that you are so relaxed that you don’t care is not.
    Everyone should be at least nervous enough to think about what he’s going to say before speaking to 47 people.

    I attended Southwestern Seminary for 4.5 years. That was for a three year program. In those days, most of the preacher boys wore coat and tie to class. I didn’t, because I went to work after class. They kept the temperature at a level that was comfortable for coat and tie. I was always cold at Southwestern.

  33. Good afternoon! I’m picking up Becca at 4:00 today. I’m excited about seeing her and hearing all about her experiences at camp. We get Lindsey back tomorrow at 10:00. It’ll be nice for the house to once again be filled with sounds of laughter. This house is too big and too quiet with only two people in it!

    I don’t mind sleeveless dresses at church, but strapless seems to be taking it a bit too far. I know they are in style, but I feel one’s shoulders should be covered.

    People at our church dress very casually. I usually wear a dress or a long skirt, but lots of people wear shorts and flip-flops. I don’t mind, I just don’t feel comfortable dressing like that to worship God.

  35. We just got air conditioning in our church. I was a little worried I might roast in the service last Sunday, but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite cool. Later, I noticed the ceiling fans and floor fans were not moving, though I could feel a breeze. Finally noticed the air conditioner units newly installed. I appreciate it.

  38. The Real, thank you for that Bill Cosby clip (I’m in the city with high speed – Jo understands 😉 ). My father also used to own that record, but he didn’t have it when we grew up – he just reminisced about “The Chicken Heart the Ate New York City”. So it was nice to finally hear the clip.

  39. Can’t relate to these temperature discussions. No ac or heat here. We can open or close louvered windows and that’s all. The door is always open in church too. I went out to the islands a few years ago and saw churches that had just a half wall and then open to the roof. They had a good long overhang though because the rain just pours down out there. Cold and cloudy here today.

  41. I remember when they had tube radios. They took 2-3 seconds to warm up.
    Then, the Japanese came out with those little transistor radios. Everyone made fun of them.

  42. Chas…..Daddy was a radio/tv repairman as a hobby/job….when he wasn’t working his “real job” at Fisher Body as an electrician…..he would let me test the tubes on his tube tester….I loved the smell of the warming tubes….I know…weird….

  43. Oh, yes, tube technology/ I remember turning on the TV and having to wait a minute for the tubes to warm up. And then when we turned it off there was that white spot in the middle of the screen. I guess that was all the electrons gathering into their non-charged place at the back of the picture tube.

  44. Oh, yeah! I’d forgotten about that white spot.

    My Emily is quite the nature-loving, all-natural kind of girl. Have I mentioned that she’s growing dreadlocks in her hair? Yes, she washes her hair, & no, they don’t stink. (2 common misconceptions about people with dreadlocks. Although there may be some who don’t wash their hair, but that’s not the norm.)

    She also makes all her own cleaning & hygiene products, including toothpaste & deodorant (which doesn’t work too well on sweaty days, so on those days, she uses Tom’s natural deodorant).

    Well, now she’s planning on making a straw mattress for the new bed she’s going to be getting, because the flame retardants in mattresses are dangerous to breathe in. And she’ll have to make a new one every 6 months.

    Doesn’t sound too comfy to me.

  45. that little white dot on the tv screen. We weren’t supposed to watch tv after school, but would watch movies with Captain Sacto. Meawhile we were watching the end of our driveway for our parents to come home and quickly turn off the tv. Missed the end of a lot of shows. Then we would disappear and anxiously hope that the white dot would disappear and not give us away.

  46. Jo, that reminds me of when my folks undid the cable connection in the furnace room so my sister and I couldn’t watch TV after school unsupervised. We quickly found where the connection was and had to run many a time to disconnect it when we heard the garage door open 🙂 I wonder if I need to confess that to my dad…

  53. Perfect time for me to pray. Father touch this little one with your hand of healing and give 6 arrows the strenght and comfort to make it through the night. Ear aches can be so painful Father, please relieve the pressure and the pain. Bless this household this night. Amen
