Our Daily Thread 7-9-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1776 the American Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Gen. George Washington’s troops in New York.

In 1808 the leather-splitting machine was patented by Samuel Parker.

In 1868 the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.

In 1922 Johnny Weissmuller became the first person to swim the 100 meters freestyle in less than a minute.

In 1968 the first All-Star baseball game to be played indoors took place at the Astrodome in Houston, TX.

And in 1997 Mike Tyson was banned from the boxing ring and fined $3 million for biting the ear of opponent Evander Holyfield.

Not many birthday choices to choose from today, so it’s Random Selection Day. Seriously, I scrolled my Favorites list real fast and just picked wherever it stopped. You’re lucky though, it could have been a lot worse. 🙂

First up, Mr. Keaggy covers the Beatles.

Next up, The Refreshments/aka Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.

And for the last one…..

  1. Good morning, Jo.

I take Becca to camp at Grandma’s this morning. This is her first year to go; I hope she has a splendid time! Elder daughter is at horse camp–so we will be empty-nesters for four days. I plan on tackling some organizational projects while the house is empty. While it will be nice to have some very rare alone time with my spouse, I’m sure the house will feel quite empty without them.

  2. nau or now, yes it is morning now. My roommate and I agree that the greetings don’t always make sense. For even less sense, why would I greet you that way when it is almost bedtime here???
Looking at the situation in Egypt, I am so glad that my sil made it home last week

  3. Hi JO. I visited here before, but had business to attend to at the Political thread.
Something I read in World last night agitated me and I had to deal with it this morning.
    Thanks for thinking of me.

  4. I am getting plum lazy…I slept until 6:40, although I was awake to know that ANNMS was not sleeping either. I read from 1:30 to 3:00.
I am getting back with the program today. I am attending some real estate classes and will see what happens. I have 30 minutes this afternoon I can speak with the Broker of the company.

I worked for Guy yesterday for about 4 or 5 hours. What is fuzzy is that I worked 3.5 hours yesterday but I also worked fro 5:30 unitl a little after 8pm for him as well. I was setting up his gmail, Google Drive, and a gmail account for myselft so that I could share the documents on my computer with him and upload a bunch of emails to Google Drive that had to do with all the short sales we did. It is just that I was able to do things around the house, watch TV, etc while things were uploading. I just wandered by my computer occassionally.

I am hoping to put the Churchill quote into action today.

  5. Good morning. Hey, Kim! Husband and fourth daughter are out your way, did you see them? She is in Pensacola attending a medical camp and he is visiting his dad after dropping her off there.

  6. I had a surprise visitor this morning. One of my children is assigned a first thing in the morning walk to the mailbox (about half a mile there) but they are not allowed to get up before seven. I heard the pitter patter of his nearly twelve year old feet shortly after six and guessed he had misread the clock. I let him complete the walk but now he needs to hang out at the end of the driveway until the others get up and then do his walk again. It is an enjoyable walk so he won’t mind. It is tough around here.

  7. No blackberries this year. Four-five years ago, I picked enough to freeze several quarts. Last year, enough for one blackberry pie. Today, not one blackberry. Lots of flowers on the vine. But, no bees, no berries. I haven’t seen one bee this year.

  9. Dropping my car off for its overdue service today, let’s hope not a lot more than the oil change will be absolutely needed.

I’m making more calls today on the dog shooting story, which I hope to finish. Among PDs I hope to get call backs from is one in Texas where they had dog shootings that were similar to ours (but in these cases pet dogs were shot by mistake at the wrong houses, very tragic for the families). As a result they instituted specialized training on how to better prevent those kinds of incidents.

Talked to my cousin last night, a relative on her side of the family (in Ariz.) is battling cancer. Lots of cancer in our church right now, too. What a scourge.

And we’re going to get a bit of heat today, up to 90 in the city proper, but on the coast we should still be in the 80s tops, which isn’t too bad. Temperatures are supposed to go back down again tomorrow.

Now I have to go read the political thread to see what Chas is agitated about.

  10. We have lots of blossoms also, but I have not seen any honeybees. But we have lots of fruit on the raspberries so they must be out there. We do have a lot of snakes this year, but not that many mice. Maybe the snakes are eating the honeybees. The one we ate last night was skinny.

  11. Thankful to hear about your sweet pup Roy….what Vet did you end up going to for her treatment?
We have had lots of bees here…the flowers are keeping them quite busy this summer…..and they like the hummingbird feeders too! Have a most blessed day everyone….

  12. We have tons of bees here. I mowed my grass yesterday and they were everywhere because the grass was higher than usual. The clover flowers are everywhere, and what they seem to like best.

  13. Bees are around my place, too — I have a flowering bush next to my front steps and they’re buzzing like crazy when I walk down them I’m the mornings.

So the ‘loaner’ they gave me today was a Prius. Very fancy and upscale!

  14. I’m glad the bees are somewhere. There would be problems if they were to disappear. But the growers seem to have good apple and peach crops.
The no blackberries. I mowed this afternoon. None in the clover either.

  15. I am thinking again of getting honey bees going here. My step brother used to raise bees but he found the yellow jackets kept killing them off. He finally decided, much as he liked the honey, he did not have time to reestablish the hives every spring. He is a farmer and that is getting in the seed time.

  16. Did you eat a snake last night, Mumsee? Or did I read that wrong?

We have lots and lots of bees of all kinds, honey, bumble, leaf cutter, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets….

  17. We did eat snake last night, Kare.

Howard said that was his biggest problem was the yellow jackets. I know that honey bees have a way to defend their hive from them but it appears they could be overpowered if a lot appeared at one time and judging by my hummingbird feeders, that could happen.

Honey bees are not from here, most are Italian so they are imported. They came with the folks on the boats so they do have competition. We planted clover to entice them and have lots of clover but very few bees.

  18. We have bugs of all kinds here in Texas. One especially loathsome creature is the scorpion. There are tons of them in Bandera.

Pastor Roy: I’m glad your dog is doing better.

  19. KimH: I had to leave my house at 8:30 this morning, so I’d set my alarm for 6:30. However, I awoke at 5:00 and couldn’t go back to sleep. I’ve had a touch of insomnia the last five days or so. It’s so frustrating!

  21. We have Yellow Jackets here (Georgia Tech 🙂 . We do seem to have some bees although not so many as in the past. I use to see carpenter bees quite frequently and have not seen those in years. Last year there was a yellow jacket cave by our mail box and I would sometimes be in their flight path as I went to get the mail. I looked for them to be there again this year but have not seen them. I wondered how they just disappeared since they seemed so numerous as I watched them zoom past to their underground cave.

  22. Ephesians 2 :4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

I pray that we remember that we are saved by grace, That we should also show grace to other in their time of need. That we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works according to God’s Word and Standard, not according to Society views of good works and standards. That God is and has prepared the path we are to walk. Even when it seems to have no end, God is with us and is helping us to walk that path.
