Our Daily Thread 7-5-13

Good Morning!

It’s Friday! 🙂

On this day in 1865 William Booth founded the Salvation Army in London.

In 1892 Andrew Beard was issued a patent for the rotary engine.

In 1935 President Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act into law.

In 1946 the bikini bathing suit, created by Louis Reard, made its debut during a fashion show at the Molitor Pool in Paris.

In 1950 U.S. forces engaged the North Koreans for the first time at Osan, South Korea.

In 1975 Arthur Ashe became the first black man to win a Wimbledon singles title when he defeated Jimmy Connors.

And in 1989 former U.S. National Security Council aide Oliver North received a $150,000 fine and a suspended prison term for his part in the Iran-Contra affair.  The convictions were later overturned.

First up with a birthday today, Robbie Robertston, of The Band.

Next up today with a birthday, Huey Lewis, with an appropriate Friday song. 🙂

And then this guy made his first commercial recording in Memphis, Tenn. on today’s date in 1954. He recorded these 2 songs. Took awhile, but I found ’em together. 😉

  1. Ephesians 1 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

  2. May God bless the reading of His Word and may it give us the strength to stand and live for Him, in a society that has reject His way.

  3. I love the freedom that I have teaching in a Christian mission school. Sometimes my class will be working and I wander around checking their work while singing a praise chorus.

  4. I was rudely awakened at 5 a.m. by the sounds of the cat throwing up. Ugh. Not a particularly spiritual way to greet the day.

And now the cat won’t leave me alone, she’s purring and is all over me. I just want to go back to sleep.

But it’s back to work for us today.

  5. Yesterday my family had the pleasure of walking through the River Sculpture Garden in Chattanooga. It was so beautiful. Has anyone else been to a similar garden?

Nearby we saw a groundhog. My husband said it is unusual to see them out like that since they are very shy. He told me his grandfather use to hunt them and that their family would eat them. In NC they were called “Whistle pigs” because of the noise they made. I was glad our son was with us to hear a bit about his great grandfather. I asked my husband what groundhog tastes like and he said it is smilar to a cross between beef and pork.

  6. Quiet day in here, I see. We had a good time yesterday but are pretty much taking it easy today. Two children, who chose not to do schoolwork as well as they could over the school year, are finishing things up. Two are resting, though they were riding a horse earlier. Two are riding their bikes to town to take advantage of the swimming pool. Ten miles of bike ride to hang out in the pool. Okay, but not for me.

  7. Where is everyone /
I step out for a while and everything goes quiet.
    We are, indeed in Columbia.
QoD What can you do in Columbia when it’s raining all the time?
It hasn’t been a fun trip so far.
Not only that, WiFi is acting up.

  8. Donna is a wise guy, I see. Thanx for the comics.
    😉
One thing you can do when it’s raining in Columbia is sit in a hotel lobby and surf the internet.
    It’s raining in Hendersonville too.
Seems the only place it isn’t raining is Arizona.
I hate typing on a laptop.

  9. Mike sabotaged us. He said something about not having any mice in the house since they put the goo around the pipes again. I found one in a trap this evening and daughter saw one racing across the floor. She went on the hunt and caught that one and took it out to the cat. Then she said, one down one to go, so she must have seen another. Stupid cats have to have their meals hand delivered now? What is this world coming to. Such a sense of entitlement!

  10. Cheryl’s “thirteen!” (being such a paltry number) seemed so sad to me. 😦

I’ve been at work all day.

Chas has been out of town and stuck in the rain with a laptop.

But what excuse to the rest of you have?

  11. Donna, I may be home, but I too have been at work all day, trying to finish a project so I can start on a clean, fresh one Monday. My boss agreed to let me have yesterday off, but I had to work today.

  12. Yeah, yeah, Cheryl. Likely story.

    I knew it, there’s a party somewhere.

With mice. With Cheryl, with Chas. With everyone. Without me.

    I miss out on everything.
