Our Daily Thread 7-3-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1608 the city of Quebec was founded.

In 1775 U.S. Gen. George Washington took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, MA.

In 1863 the U.S. Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, PA, ended after three days.

In 1890 Idaho became the 43rd state to join the United States of America.

In 1930 the U.S. Congress created the U.S. Veterans Administration.

In 1940 Bud Abbott and Lou Costello debuted on NBC radio.

And in 1962 Jackie Robinson became the first African American to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Today is the birthday of one of my favorites writers.

So he get’s the Quote of the Day. Three in fact… 🙂

“We journalists make it a point to know very little about an extremely wide variety of topics; this is how we stay objective.”

“Fishing is boring, unless you catch an actual fish, and then it is disgusting.”

“To an adolescent, there is nothing in the world more embarrassing than a parent.”

Dave Barry 🙂

First up today, a special request.

And then some more comedy, since they debuted on this day.

And since we need some more music, how about a medley?

  1. I am still processing yesterday. II have some interviews set up for next week. Mr P keeps telling me that eventually this will be a good thing. I’m waiting.

  2. Dave Barry hit the nail on the head with his quote about journalists. Sometimes they ask the stupidest questions. And I really feel sorry for those who are overcoming the loss of family and friends in a disaster when some idiot puts a camera and a microphone in their face and asks “How do you fell?”

  3. Good morning! I always liked Bill Cosby, too. And, I love Dave Barry. He’s hilarious! I’ll be busy today getting Lindsey ready for horse camp next week. We’re committed Thursday through Saturday with Scott’s family, so today’s the only day we have to get her everything she needs. Luckily, it only means trips to two stores–Charlotte’s Saddlery and Academy–so it shouldn’t take too terribly long. Becca has a playdate at our house at 2:30 with a really sweet girl from her class last year. The girl is delightful to host as she has impeccable manners and is very easy to redirect, and even that is rarely necessary. Y’all enjoy today!

  4. Not first!

It’s obit week for me, had to do one on a jazz pianist yesterday (who played with the likes of the Andrew Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Steve Allen — the list goes on, a virtual who’s who of famous performers). And he sounded like a very nice guy to boot — he and his wife were together for more than half a century (she was a singer) and they still performed at charity functions, fundraisers etc., and (he) weekly at one of our local high-end coastal resorts.

Today’s obit is on the former high school coach (everyone called him “Coach” which is what he also called himself) who played football for USC and who remained active in the local Episcopal Church congregation despite struggling (he privately told me once) with the denomination’s direction in recent years. Said he was too old to change churches and besides, until recently, he was a dedicated veteran participant in the denomination’s various relief efforts.

Both in their 90s, both lived good & interesting lives.

  5. Kim, Mr. P is right, although it won’t be seen except in hindsight. But you know all that. Meanwhile, walking through it all is no picnic.

I’m glad you already have some interviews set up; you’re a survivor. It’s good, too, that you’ll be able to get away on a trip for a few days to decompress from all of this. What a stinky week, I’m so sorry! 😦 😦

  6. Peter,

I know what you mean. Years ago our apt.building caught fire. We were in bed and had to flee quickly. As I stood across the street, in my boxer briefs, watching everything we had being destroyed, a lady from the local paper tried to take my picture. I told her if she took it, I would take her camera and bust it in a million pieces right before her eyes. Then a cop next to me grabbed her by the arm and took her away from me while asking her what the @#$% was wrong with her. I could hear her telling him it was news and the public had a right to see it. She’s lucky the cop got her first, because if she had said that to me, her camera would have paid the price for her stupidity. Me in my underwear is not news, nor should it ever be. Common sense is obviously lacking as well. 😉

  7. I didn’t post my favorite Dave Barry quote this morning. Here it is, tongue in cheek of course. 🙂

“Guys are simple… women are not simple and they always assume that men must be just as complicated as they are, only way more mysterious. The whole point is guys are not thinking much. They are just what they appear to be. Tragically.”

  8. Aj: Love the above Dave Barry quote. My husband has said essentially the same thing to me numerous times!

Today is my dad’s 80th birthday! We are celebrating this wonderful occasion on August 3rd with a big party. My mom chose that date because my sister and her family won’t be back in the states until late July, and she didn’t want them to miss it. Just got off the phone with him and he was in a festive mood–the girls sang Happy Birthday to him and you could almost hear him grinning. So thankful to still have him around. He is in remarkably good health for his age.

  9. DonnaJ, Obits make some of the best reading. Everyone has a story and a good obit writer finds the one thread in all the subtexts that unifies the significance of that life.

  10. Adios, agreed. We had a very talented obit story writer at one of our sister papers some years ago, her work was epic. Everyone wanted her to write their obits. 🙂

It’s something of a burden but also a privilege, too. Because I’ve covered the same area for so long, I have personally known a good many of the folks I’ve written up, which makes it all a bit bittersweet.

  11. In our defense, not all journalists are like that 😉 Not matter how surprising or stunning the Real AJ may be in his underwear, Donna J and I would know better than to make that the story. At least in print. Around the water cooler . . .

  12. I know ladies. 🙂

I looked fine, and was much younger, but it’s the principle. You just don’t do that.

But I was still happy when a neighbor brought a pair of her husbands shorts. 🙂

May not have another chance to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July! May you all be blessed in a red, white and blue way. Maybe that could be some strawberries and blueberries on whipped cream 🙂

  14. Well, tomorrow is the big shindig here on the farmlette. As usual, no real idea who is coming though for the first time I can remember, several people have let us know in advance. Kind of nice. Are any of you planning to be here? Anyway, back to mowing.

  15. Mumsee, that sounds like our reunion in November. We know who the regulars are, but we never know exactly who is coming. We’re glad to see them all.

  16. Hi, all. Catching up on yesterday’s threads…

Kim, so sorry about your job loss, and the circumstances surrounding it. You are in my prayers.

Chas, I was touched by your ;-( that I wasn’t going to be around yesterday. I sometimes question whether my presence on here really makes any difference or edifies in any way. Not that anyone here makes me feel that way. That’s just me and my insecurities.

Janice and anyone else who prayed for my friend Karen, whose dad died this week, thank you. His funeral was today, and it was a great blessing to hear the gospel proclaimed and such comfort given to the family, whose loved one died in the Lord. Karen and her mom and the rest of the family are doing well.

Wishing you all a blessed day today! 🙂

  17. I’m here….busy busy day…I am having 25 loved ones over to the house tomorrow…and Paul is climbing mountain peaks until Friday…I’m doing this all by myself! Ordered fried chicken, slow cooking pulled pork…making tons of sides…picked up a carrot cake at Marigolds (oh you just haven’t lived until you have had a piece of carrot cake from Marigolds French Bakery….)….cleaned cleaned and cleaned some more….couldn’t mow the scraggily grass in front because the mower is out of gas…and we emptied the gas can when we evacuated..so it goes…
Hope you all have a blessed fourth…

  18. AJ, today is the 4th here, but it doesn’t seem like it. May I request some John Philip Sousa music for tomorrow??! My favorite and it won’t seem like the 4th of July without those marches.
