A Note To All……..

My wife and I have relatives coming to the area to visit/vacation beginning tomorrow. So next week I will be only be posting a Daily Thread and Prayer Requests so I can spend time with them. Everything will be back to normal on Monday July 1st. Until then you will still be able to chat and keep in touch, as well as share prayer needs. And you can always share news stories on the Daily Thread too.

Have fun and enjoy yourselves, I know I will.  🙂

I sure hope the fish co-operate.

Thanks,

Allen

  1. First day of summer, hmmmm…. our days seem to be mostly the same. Dark by 6:30 pm and light by 6:30am. Doesn’t change by much

  2. Jo, you are closer to the equator than any of us. Here, there is about an hour difference between summer and winter. At home, there is a four hour difference.

  3. Summer has summed and our weather reveals itself. 90° for the next 7 days with lows in the 70s and humidity creeping towards uncomfortable. Time to convince Mrs L to turn on the a/c. She and D3 say it’s too cold with the a/c, even though we set it at 78°-80°.

Anyway, here are the first Friday Funnies of the season!

Do you mean the kind swimming in the water that you want to find your hook? Perhaps you are referring to us as fish in an analogy or something. You know us, AJ, we get along fine around here!

Have fun with your family and don’t get a sunburn.

  5. I was thinking how nice it was last night as we drove home from a friend’s place to have lots of light still available. It was almost 10:00 in the evening and dusk, but not dark at all. I love these longs days and will miss them. I hate to think about going the other way, now, to shorter days.

  6. We started a fire in the stove yesterday, it has been and will be in the forties for a few days, according to the predictors. But the gardens are planted for the most part and, unless the seeds rot in the ground, should be good for now.

  7. AJ, we’ll behave. 😉 Have a wonderful trip, sounds like lots of summer fun.

I like Os Guinness, will be sure to read that link.

Met the new la mayor last night, he’s been conducting meetings with angelenos before his July 1 swearing-in ceremony to see what issues concern them most. About 200 showed up for the event in our neck of the la woods, held in a 1930s movie theater.

At one point, one of his aides tapped me on the shoulder and led me over to the aisle where the mayor-elect was sitting for about 5 mins of face time (we wound up sitting together surrounded by what was a sea of men in suits everywhere).

I remember interviewing our current and outgoing mayor when he first took office eight years ago at a local park where he was making the rounds at a union picnic. He threw his arm around me after the intro and then kept it there for much of the time as we walked during the interview, which was a bit unnerving to be honest.

So my vet called again first thing this morning (I posted on the prayer thread last night about his voicemail from yesterday telling me that Tess had tested positive for heartworm of all things). I’ll be taking her back in tomorrow for a re-check, he said they have gotten 2 false-positive tests in the past several weeks so he’s hoping that’s what this is as well.

It just makes no sense to me since she’s been on the preventative pill for years and heartworm, while present in la county (20% of our local coyotes are infected, so it’s definitely “here”), is still rarely found among the area’s pet dogs.

The concern, he said, is that there’s a resistant strain being seen in other parts of the country (midwest & south); in other words a strain that has found its way around our standard prevention drugs which have been used now for some 20 years. But no resistant cases so far have been reported in California.

  8. By the time I get home today, I’m hoping we will have a/c. Our unit broke last year, but we had to wait until we had money to replace it. I prefer not to use it too much but my husband’s allergies and thus his asthma are aggravated by having windows open. Even having the air too moist apparently has been making it hard for him to breathe.
Last night it was so hot I had trouble sleeping. I look forward to getting a better night’s sleep tonight in a somewhat cooler house.

In other news, what are people’s reactions to the news from Exodus International that they are going to shut down?

  9. Thanks, Roscuro. I had tried to use the Search function (at the top right of the page) to find a thread where it was mentioned but all it brought up were threads from weeks ago (and I didn’t look to see what the context was).

  10. Pauline, I have mixed feelings about the exodus of Exodus. It should not be an exodus from God’s word on the subject, but if the approach of the organization was in some way preventing consideration of God’s loving message, then perhaps a new organization can work better. God wants the best for people and the homosexual lifestyle is not the best. God wants to prevent diseases of the body, mind and soul. I don’t know all the details of the change of mind of the top leader. It seems he may be recognizing his condition to be somewhat like that of Paul who had the “thorn in the side,” through which God could use to show Himself strong in the man’s weakness. If the leader is saying he is still tempted, but does not give in to that temptation because God keeps him from doing so, then he is probably right on track. But if he is caving and saying he has lost the war on overcoming through the strength of God then he does not need to be leading another group which would be diametrically opposed to God’s final word on the subject.

I do not know what the former discussion was on this. I hope I have not said the same as others except that it is nice to think others may be of the same opinion.

  11. I hope AJ has a great time with his visitors. It sounds like a lot of fun for y’all and maybe not so much for the fish, unless they get away!

Good thing AJ is not a cat. You know the saying, “When the cat’s away the mice will play?”

“When the AJ’s away, Chas will play?” Maybe Drill will sneak back on here.

Has anyone heard from Tammy? I know I am not on here consistently so maybe she has been here when I have not been here.

  12. We went to the Billy Graham Library yesterday.
It’s easy to find and easy to get to. There is a guarded entrance gate, but no entrance fee.
I don’t know why he is there, he just raises the gate. There is ample parking and a tram for handicapped. You’re not surprised that you hear the gospel preached several times and a decision card offered. There is no pressure because they know that most visitors are Christians. There is a prayer room available.
Almost everything is inside the barn which is well set up and comfortable. Lots of places to sit and rest. (You enter a barn, but it’s extended, much larger than an ordinary barn.) The grounds are nice with paved walks. Ruth Graham is buried there. You know by now that her epitaph says, Construction completed. Thank you for your patience. George Beverly Shea and Billie Barrows (Cliff’s wife) are buried nearby, but not in the same plot. There is a replica of the Graham home. The ladies were interested in that.

I went to the Dairy Bar inside the barn for a sandwich & Coke. The young lady offered me a choice of slaw or potato salad. I asked if the potato salad had onions in it.
    She said no.
    😦
She lied. Right there in the Billy Graham Library, the little lady lied to me.
I have concluded, after all these years, that all commercially made potato salad has onions. I’ll never even ask that question again.

  13. The Westboro Baptist Quacks are headed to Pensacola tomorrow to protest a military funeral. Even over here in Alabama people are getting ready to go over and stand guard to keep them from the funeral. I read on FB what some other areas have done to keep them away. Pretty clever.

  14. I’m with Chas–onions ruin potato salad. But there are lots of ways to ruin potato salad! To me, it simply must be made with eggs, for example, and it should be fairly mild in flavor. I rarely like another woman’s potato salad, though I take small portions of each at any potluck, in case.

  15. I make really good potato salad but there are several of you here who would not eat it. I really don’t think I have ever made it the same way twice. I just do whatever moves me and is in the refridgerater. I also make a really good one wth red potatos, sour cream, mayo, and dill weed

  16. Hi everyone! I haven’t posted in awhile and haven’t even had time to keep up with the daily threads. The kids are out of school and my eight year old is a full time job! I love her–but she’s spunky! God must have a lot more faith in my parenting abilities than I do…Luckily, she’s good for everyone else (I know, I know, it’s me!). Her bus driver came by yesterday to give her a gift card to McDonald’s as well as a thank you note for an end-of-year-present Becca had given her on the last day. While she was in my home, she praised Becca enthusiastically for her behavior on the bus as well as her demeanor and character. It brought tears to my eyes because at home she is quite difficult and I sometimes forget how delightful she can be with other people. I suppose this should be on the prayer thread…but prayers for wisdom in relating to her this summer would be appreciated. We are leaving for the Cayman Islands tomorrow. We’ll be there for a week. I’m super excited!

AJ: Hope you have a great time with your visitors! I’ll miss your daily political thread–you do such a good job! I always read it first thing in the morning with my coffee. Thank you so much for providing this site.

Roscuro: Can’t wait to read the article. But, right now I have to finish packing!

All: My cat passed away about a week ago. He was my constant companion. It’s been hard.

  17. According to the thermostat, the temperature in the house is down to 79 degrees. It feels wonderful!
Apparently when we got up this morning, it was 86 degrees. No wonder we couldn’t sleep.

  18. Annms, so sorry about losing your pet.

My hometown is under water. Never thought that devastation could happen in Calgary. I’m glad my folks and my sister live up on the hills. They have a contingency plan to move the big cats at the zoo to the jail if the water continues to rise. 🙂

We’ve had 7 1/2 inches of rain in the last week up here, rivers are high but our house is staying mostly dry. It’s just amazing to watch the news footage of the flood in Calgary, Canmore and High River.

kare2012: So sorry to hear about your hometown. My family went through a huge flood in Bandera, TX in 1978. It was awful. My dad and three brothers had to be rescued out of trees by helicopter after the worst of the storm was over.

  20. Kathaleena, I agree about the days getting shorter. I am excited to be heading to Cairns, Australia in a week, but this is a couple of hours south and the days will get shorter. However the internet is free where I will be staying. Any suggestions??

  21. Ann – Something to keep in mind about Becca – If her behavior is good for others, it means you’ve taught her well. She throws all her “bad behavior” your way because she trusts you to love her anyway. 🙂

Not saying you can let her get away with it all, but merely encouraging you that you are not a bad mom. May God give you insight, wisdom, & strength to lead & discipline her appropriately.

  22. Kim, Calgary is where I grew up and where my family still lives. But we’re a province to the east.
I just saw on the local news that a few minutes after I crossed a river, the road washed out. Glad I left work early 🙂

  23. Good for Becca — and I’m sorry about Baily. 😦 It is sad to lose a pet.

    AJ, you’re scarin’ us.

Pauline, 79, congratulations. I don’t have a/c in my house — we’re near the coast and typically never need it. But there are times when we get a spike in the heat and I always wait until the thermostat gets down below 80 (at night) before going to bed. It’s miserable trying to sleep in 80+ weather. And I’m familiar with Iowa summers, not pretty with at ll the humidity & mosquitoes to boot.
