Our Daily Thread 6-12-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1838 the Iowa Territory was organized.

In 1839 Abner Doubleday created the game of baseball, according to the legend.  However, evidence has surfaced that indicates  that the game of baseball was played before 1800. So maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. 🙂

In 1897 Carl Elsener patented his penknife, which would later become known as the Swiss Army Knife.

In 1918 the first airplane bombing raid by an American unit occurred  on the Western Front in France during World War I.

In 1921 U.S. President Warren Harding urged every young man to attend military training camp.

In 1935 U.S. Senator Huey Long of Louisiana made the longest speech on Senate record. It took 15 1/2 hours and was filled by 150,000 words.

In 1939 The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated  in Cooperstown, New York. This was exactly one hundred years to the day on which the game was invented by Abner Doubleday. Or not. See above. 🙂

In 1967 state laws which prohibited interracial marriages were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.

And in 1987 President Reagan publicly challenged Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall.

Since it’s his birthday, and we’re all familiar with him and his work, I think he’s a good choice for our quote today. 🙂

Quote of the Day

“But to understand what it means to be strong and courageous, Christians should look to the person of Christ.”

Marvin Olasky

It was a good speech then, and it still is today. Here’s part of it.

And it’s Vic Damone’s birthday, and this song reminds me of the day I met my lovely wife. 🙂

And it’s the birthday of the lead singer of this band, Brad Delp.

Anyone have a QoD for us?

  1. Re: Harding wanting men to go to training camp.
There was much talk about UMT when I was in high school. All the guys were for it and the girls against it. (Well not “all” but that was the general sentiment.)
    I think it’s a good idea.
    Off to the Y.
    ;-(

  2. Last night the man I work for posted this on my FB page. It was a good way to end the day. I hope you enjoy it. I had never heard it before.

  3. QoD: What’s your best energizer for when you’re running out of steam? Music, exercise, a certain food, invigorating reading, debate…? 🙂

I’ll be back later with my answer.

  4. only 4 more days of school before our 5 week break. I plan on spending 12 days in Cairns, Australia. One of the good things will be free internet so I can listen to all the music that AJ keeps posting.

  5. Jo, do they take Winter breaks there? When I saw “12 days in Australia”, I thought “that’s a mighty long way”, then I remembered it’s just a short hop for you.
It’s probably always spring where you are.

  6. As I was exiting the Y this morning, a couple of ladies were coming in. I stopped and held the door for them. One said “Thank you”. I said, “Don’t I get a tip?” She said, “Buy Google”. 😆

Yesterday evening, we went to a SS dinner at Bay Breeze. So, I went in to shave. I washed my face and put some toothpaste in my hand. I thought, “Charlie, that was a stupid thing to do!” So I rinsed it off and put some hair gunk in my hand. 😥
Three tries just to get some shaving cream!
    Chas is losing it.
I know all of you understand. What burns me is knowing that everyone at NSA is making fun of me right now.

  7. You’re a hoot, Chas. 🙂 Worst I do is mix up the shampoo and conditioner sometimes.

I sure could have slept another hour this morning, but it’s only Wednesday.

How’s nancyjill? Those fires are still burning.

A few of us were speculating yesterday about whether our company will even offer a health insurance package this coming year. We’ll know in November (which, weirdly, isn’t that far away since this year is again speeding by).

Either way, we figure we’re sunk as the premiums have been skyrocketing so seriously in recent years anyway. One colleague is about to go out on maternity leave and she said she and her husband calculate that their portion will be several thousand dollars at least.

Oh well, enough worrying about what hasn’t happened yet — and things we have no control over anyway. It’s a new day, God’s grace is sufficient!

  8. Hey, Jo, my Stargazer son is headed to Sydney on Monday where he’ll attend an astronomy conference (and start the job hunt networking; his dissertation is about a year from finishing, but you got to get started early). I wanted to go with him (flee seems to be my operative word these days), but my husband ordered me to go on vacation with the rest of the family to a nearby lake instead.

Bummer. I have to work during the ten days, so it was never really and option, but I’ve always wanted to visit Australia, ever since reading and seeing Nevil Shute’s wonderful A Town Like Alice 30 years ago!

  9. Over on my blog today is my post about looking through Oswald Chambers’ Bible, including a few photos.

I cannot understand why a vertical photo take with my I-phone (a 3SG I inherited), which appears vertical when downloaded to my computer, which uploads to WordPress vertical, will only appear horizontal in the actual post, no matter how many times I try to fix it.

So, you don’t get to see a picture of the typewriter on which My Utmost for His Highest was written on.

    Weird.

  10. Michelle,

I was just reading that. 🙂

Pretty cool to hold history like that huh? 🙂 God has given you a memory, and opportunity, that you will never forget. He’s cool like that. 🙂

  11. AJ, et. al. The episode about the shave cream is true. But the comment about the NSA was the reason I posted it. I realize that I was exaggerating, but only somewhat.

I can’t imagine that NSA cares about us, but I can assure you of this:
    They know we’re here.

  12. Brad Delp was a troubled soul. He took his own life a few years ago. Accounts were that he was a kind-hearted person. His voice was a perfect match for Tom Scholz’s guitar style. After their first two albums, their music stunk.

  13. I have had those Swiss Army knives. No matter what, those knives never held an edge. The best knife in my book is a Case Knife. I particularly admire the Case Trapper knife.

  14. oh, AJ, that doesn’t help me get through today. These kids have way more energy than I have. Chas, we have so many kids that go home to the north that our school is on an American schedule, so we start the year in July. However we also have a 5 week break for Christmas!
Yes, Australia is just a short hop away, but what a difference. It is always spring here and I am seeing sunshine out my window with fog in the distance. But, you always carry an umbrella, cuz sun in the morning does not mean sun all day. Time to get off to school.

  16. Hey, sort of regarding Olasky’s birthday, have you guys seen the interviews he has performed at Patrick Heny College and posted on YouTube? As I would have expected, he’s an excellent interviewer. Here’s a *must see* interview with Rosaria Butterfield, author of the excellent Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert. It’s a fascinating and encouraging read by a former lesbian who converted to Christ. I can’t recommend the book enough. Great interview here:

  17. Michelle, A Town Like Alice is one of my favorites. Have you seen the PBS series based on the book? Only had one part I didn’t like and then found out that that part was not in the book. A powerful story.
