What’s interesting in the news today?

Open thread, you decide.

Here’s a few from me, and we have some doozies. 🙄

We’ll start with this one. The light bulb 💡 finally goes on over at the WaPo. Now they get it….. 🙄

From TheWashingtonPost

” The evidence was incontrovertible, captured on video and posted on YouTube for all the world to see. During a demonstration against the Syrian regime, Wael Ibrahim, a veteran activist, had tossed aside a banner inscribed with the Muslim declaration of faith.

And that, decreed the officers of the newly established Sharia Authority set up to administer rebel-held Aleppo, constitutes a crime under Islamic law, punishable in this instance by 10 strokes of a metal pipe.

The beating administered last month offered a vivid illustration of the extent to which the Syrian revolution has strayed from its roots as a largely spontaneous uprising against four decades of Assad family rule. After mutating last year into a full-scale war, it is moving toward what appears to be an organized effort to institute Islamic law in areas that have fallen under rebel control.”

Strayed? No. This is what it’s always been, you just ignored that aspect until now.

The Budget from Senate Dems has died in the House, as it should have.

From TheHill

“The House on Wednesday rejected the Senate Democratic budget in a 154-261  vote, with 35 Democrats voting against the blueprint from their upper chamber  colleagues.

The Senate Democratic budget was one of three budgets cast aside in a series  of votes Wednesday after a debate in which Republicans excoriated President  Obama for failing to offer his own budget plan in time for the votes.

House Democrats were instructed to vote for the Senate Democratic budget, but  35 of them defected.”

Cuomo’s gun restrictions are off to a great start. First they had to re-write portions because they forgot to exempt police, now it’s got other issues. Not very well thought out, but then again, it was always emotion based with little to do with facts or common sense. But like ObamaCare, I guess they had to pass it to find out what was in it. 🙄

From TheUticaObserverDispatch

“Cuomo and legislative leaders in state budget talks plan to change the law that was passed in January before a provision kicks in banning the sale of 10-bullet magazines. The gun measure outlaws the purchase of any magazines that carry more than seven bullets, the nation’s most stringent limit. That would have put a severe limit on the sale of guns with industry standard 10-bullet magazines when the provision of the law went onto effect on April 15.

“There is no such thing as a seven-bullet magazine. That doesn’t exist, so you really have no practical option,” Cuomo said. He told reporters that any suggestion this will be a rollback of the law is “wholly without basis.”

“Cuomo said the state needs to allow the sale of handguns and rifles with 10-shot magazines, but New Yorkers will still be required to keep no more than seven bullets in them, except at shooting ranges and competitions. Violating the seven-bullet limit is a misdemeanor, but a violation if the magazine was in the owner’s home.”

I need a head shaking, face-palm smiley. Sure 7 rounds. Got it. 🙄

And now it goes down hill. We have no money for tours for school kids, but we’ve got plenty to waste on garbage like this.

CONTENT WARNING!

I’m not sure if it’s for the duck anatomy references, or because it’s so offensive what they waste our money on. Maybe both.

From CNSNews

“The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $384,949 grant to Yale University for a study on “Sexual Conflict, Social Behavior and the Evolution of Waterfowl Genitalia”, according to the recovery.gov website.

The grant description says,“The project examines how reproductive morphology covaries with season, age, and social environment in a diverse sample of duck species that differ in ecology, territoriality and breeding system.”

The grant was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus package.”

🙄 I’m just speechless here, which is probably for the best.

And PETA shows once again why many consider them to be frauds. It’s about the cash and the show, but not the animals.

CONTENT WARNING! because PETA likes to use scantily clad and naked people in their ads.

From TheDailyMail

“Animal rights charity PETA killed almost 90 per cent of dogs and cats placed in the care of the shelter at its Virginia  headquarters last year, it has been revealed today.

The charity, well-known for attention  grabbing publicity campaigns such as the ‘I’d rather go naked’ anti-fur  campaign, euthanized 1,647 cats and dogs last year and only placed 19 in new  homes according to the data submitted to the Virginia  Department for Agriculture and Consumer Services.

PETA told Mail Online that the animals they  take in at the center are ‘unadoptable’, however 89.4 per cent of pets is much  higher than their own approximation that half of animals taken to shelters end  up being euthanized.”

Maybe they should protest their own headquarters.

What’s interesting in the news today?

Here’s a few to start you off, then have at it. 🙂

7 Marines were killed yesterday during a training exercise at the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada.

From FoxNews

“A deadly explosion at a military ammunition storage facility in Nevada during  a training exercise Monday prompted the U.S. Marine Corps to issue a blanket  suspension of 60-millimeter mortars and associated tubes pending a review of the  accident.

Seven U.S. Marines were killed and several others were wounded Monday when a  mortar exploded prematurely inside is firing tube during mountain training  exercises at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. It’s unclear what caused the  malfunction.

The accident prompted the Marine Corps to immediately halt use of some mortar  shells until an investigation can determine its safety.”

That news was bad enough. But Harry Reid decided to politicize it, and add insult to injury. He implied from the floor of the Senate, where cowardly liars like himself are permitted to outright lie, that it was because of the Sequester.

From RealClearPolitics

“On the Senate floor this morning, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) implied the explosion that killed seven Marines at an ammunitions depot in Hawthorne, Nevada was due to the “cutting back in training and maintenance” in the sequester.”

Needless to say, Marine brass wasn’t happy and pointed out their feelings on such classless comments.

Meanwhile, the number of Sheriff’s nationwide coming out against un-constitutional restrictions on 2nd Amendment rights is now up to 340.

From CNSNews

“Including Sheriff John Cooke of Weld County, Colorado, 340 sheriffs have publicly stated they will not enforce gun laws they believe are unconstitutional.

In response to the passage of two new gun control bills in Colorado last week, Sheriff John Cooke told the Greeley Tribune that he “won’t bother enforcing the laws.”

One bill requires gun buyers to pay for their own background checks, a service that was previously free and now estimated to cost the buyer $10-$12 per purchase.  The second bill puts a 15-round limit on magazines.

Cooke says of the new laws: “They’re feel-good, knee-jerk reactions that are unenforceable.”

And gun magazine maker Magpul has told Colorado officials they will leave the state if the Gov. signs into law new restrictions on magazine capacity.

Via Twitchy

“The full statement as posted to Facebook received more than 10,000 likes within the first two hours.”

“Apparently Gov Hickenlooper has announced that he will sign HB 1224 on Wednesday. We were asked for our reaction, and here is what we said:

We have said all along that based on the legal problems and uncertainties in the bill, as well as general principle, we will have no choice but to leave if the Governor signs this into law. We will start our transition out of the state almost immediately, and we will prioritize moving magazine manufacturing operations first. We expect the first PMAGs to be made outside CO within 30 days of the signing, with the rest to follow in phases. We will likely become a multi-state operation as a result of this move, and not all locations have been selected. We have made some initial contacts and evaluated a list of new potential locations for additional manufacturing and the new company headquarters, and we will begin talks with various state representatives in earnest if the Governor indeed signs this legislation. Although we are agile for a company of our size, it is still a significant footprint, and we will perform this move in a manner that is best for the company and our employees.

It is disappointing to us that money and a social agenda from outside the state have apparently penetrated the American West to control our legislature and Governor, but we feel confident that Colorado residents can still take the state back through recalls, ballot initiatives, and the 2014 election to undo these wrongs against responsible Citizens.”

Knee-jerk stupidity costing jobs.

Philadelphia Magazine  is taking heat for a provocative piece on race relations in Philly.

“Later, driving up Broad Street as I head home to Mount Airy, I stop at a light just north of Lycoming and look over at some rowhouses. One has a padlocked front door. A torn sheet covering the window in that door looks like it might be stained with sewage. I imagine not a crackhouse, but a child, maybe several children, living on the other side of that stained sheet. Plenty of children in Philadelphia live in places like that. Plenty live on Diamond, where my son rents, where there always seem to be a lot of men milling around doing absolutely nothing, where it’s clearly not a safe place to be.

I’ve shared my view of North Broad Street with people—white friends and colleagues—who see something else there: New buildings. Progress. Gentrification. They’re sunny about the area around Temple. I think they’re blind, that they’ve stopped looking. Indeed, I’ve begun to think that most white people stopped looking around at large segments of our city, at our poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods, a long time ago. One of the reasons, plainly put, is queasiness over race. Many of those neighborhoods are predominantly African-American. And if you’re white, you don’t merely avoid them—you do your best to erase them from your thoughts.

At the same time, white Philadelphians think a great deal about race. Begin to talk to people, and it’s clear it’s a dominant motif in and around our city. Everyone seems to have a story, often an uncomfortable story, about how white and black people relate.”

So of course the Mayor is throwing a fit, and is threatening to turn the faux-govt Philadelphia Human Relations Commission on them. He thinks pointing out the obvious is the equivalent of yelling “fire” and will incite panic.

From FoxNews

“The Philadelphia Human Relations Commission has launched an investigation at the request of the mayor after a well-known magazine published an essay that explored perspectives of white citizens on the issue of race relations.”

“Mayor Michael Nutter called on the commission to consider rebuking both Philadelphia Magazine and writer Bob Huber noting that “the First Amendment, like other constitutional rights, is not an unfettered right.”

“Rue Landau, the Human Relations Committee’s executive director, agreed with the mayor’s concerns regarding what she called, “the racial insensitivity and perpetuation of harmful stereotypes portrayed in the Philadelphia Magazine piece.”

The VolokhConspiracy explains why the Mayor is earning his name. This is why I’m not a big fan of the PC Police, aka Human Relations Commissions either.

“The implication — which I think is very strong — that the “speech” is indeed unprotected by the First Amendment under the “incitement” exception is absolutely wrong: Under Brandenburg v. Ohio and Hess v. Indiana, the speech in the article is clearly protected. (It’s true that a narrow range of speech that is intended and likely to produce imminent illegal conduct, with imminent meaning within hours or at most a few days, rather than at some unspecified future time, is unprotected, but the magazine article definitely does not fit within that.) And it’s quite troubling, I think, when a mayor (who has power over, among others, the Police Department) suggests that the expression of opinions that he disapproves of about race is constitutionally unprotected.

The specific call in the mayor’s letter, which is for the Commission to “conduct an inquiry into the state of racial issues, biases, and attitudes within and among the many communities and neighborhoods in the City of Philadelphia,” and to “consider specifically whether Philadelphia Magazine and the writer, Bob Huber are appropriate for rebuke by the Commission,” is not as troubling — both the mayor and the Commission have the right to express their own views, and indeed it is commonly argued that the proper alternative to suppression of speech is counterspeech. But the Mayor’s rationale wasn’t just, “this speech is constitutionally protected but so is our response.” Rather, the Mayor expressly suggested that the speech in the article was unprotected, and therefore punishable outright and not just worthy of public disapproval.”

Prayer Requests 3-20-13

Who can we pray for today?

And it’s Wednesday, so don’t forget Gambia and the workers ministering there. 🙂

Psalm 86:1-12

1 Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

6 Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.

10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

How has a prayer request or praise for us today?

Psalm 84

1 How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!

2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.

3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.

4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.

5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.

6 Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.

7 They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.

8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah.

9 Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.

10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

12 O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

The 30 count criminal trial against abortionist Kermit Gosnell is under way in Philadelphia. The prosecution has begun presenting their case to the jury.

From LifeNews

“The lead prosecutor in the Kermit Gosnell murder trial made it clear today what the trial is and is not about. He said the case has less to do with abortion than it does the fact that Kermit Gosnell is a killer who took the lives of newly-born babies.

Gosnell is charged with more than 30 criminal counts including the killing of seven newborn infants and a female patient in a botched abortion.

Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore appeared before a jury of 12 people — a mix of men and women and people who are black and white — sitting in the Common Pleas Court jury. She called Gosnell a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” who “used and abused desperate women.”

The Defense has a different version. They claim the prosecution is racist, and that standards and conditions in the clinic were good enough for the area. The implication is poor people should expect poor standards and treatment.

More here from NBCNews

“A lawyer defending a Philadelphia abortion provider on murder charges accused officials of “an elitist, racist prosecution” as the death-penalty trial opened Monday.

Lawyer Jack McMahon also accused city officials of “a prosecutorial lynching” of his client, Dr. Kermit Gosnell, who is black.”

“But McMahon said city officials are applying “Mayo Clinic” standards to Gosnell’s inner-city office in West Philadelphia.”

“”This is a targeted, elitist and racist prosecution of a doctor who’s done nothing but give (back) to the poor and the people of West Philadelphia,” the fiery McMahon insisted to the predominantly black jury, as Gosnell sat serenely taking notes. “It’s a prosecutorial lynching of Dr. Kermit Gosnell.””

Safe, legal, and rare? This clinic fails on all 3.

New data that Chinese officials have released show the forced/abortion numbers in that country. The numbers are staggering even when compared to the 50+ million since 1973 in this country.

From LifeSiteNews

“New data from China’s health ministry has revealed that approximately 330 million abortions have been performed in the country since 1971, according to AFP.

According to Chinese government researchers, currently about 13 million abortions occur annually, or about 1,500 every hour on average.

As well, over the past 40 years Chinese officials have sterilized nearly 200 million men and women, and inserted 400 million intra-uterine devices.”

In Colorado a Planned Parenthood clinic is accused of performing a forced abortion that severely injured a woman.

From LifeNews

“Forty-year-old Ayanna Byer entered a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs with the intent of having an abortion, but changed her mind when she learned the staff couldn’t provide her with the intravenous anesthesia they had promised her for the pain. Despite her protests, the abortionist went ahead with killing the child inside her, while she lay there, wide awake, hearing everything, and in considerable pain. He then sent Byer home. Two days later, she was in an emergency room, where doctors tried to repair the damage of the botched procedure.

In the ER, Byer “was septic with a high fever and elevated white count,” reports the on-call doctor who assisted her. “She required an immediate high-risk surgery to remove the remaining tissue that had been left during the previous procedure done at Planned Parenthood. Because of the continued pain and heavy bleeding, I was concerned that the patient might have had an ectopic pregnancy. I called Planned Parenthood the following day to inquire about pathology results, only to learn that no pathology is done on abortion patients. The doctor performing the abortion ‘looks’ at the tissue and makes a diagnosis.”

“It is medically inappropriate for a physician to remove products of conception and not confirm the diagnosis with pathology,” the doctor says in his official statement. “I know of no physician or hospital that would allow the removal of a specimen of this nature and assume what the diagnosis was by just ‘looking’ at it. It is not acceptable to refer your patients to the Emergency Department and assume the on-call doctor will take care of any complications and assume all the risk associated with the complications.”

Alliance Defending Freedom Allied Attorney Doug Romero of Denver has filed suit against Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains on behalf of Byer. “A woman’s life is more important than Planned Parenthood’s bottom line,” he says. “What Planned Parenthood did to Ayanna is beyond the pale. They clearly put her through extraordinary cruelty and jeopardized her life. Their actions were intolerable.””

And the Senate of North Dakota has passed a state law to ban abortions based on Down Syndrome, as well as banning all abortion when a fetal heartbeat has been detected, which is around 6 weeks. It awaits the Gov.’s signature. And let’s face it, numerous legal challenges.

From WashingtonCBSLocal

“The North Dakota Senate on Friday approved banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, sending what would be the most stringent abortion restrictions in the U.S. to the state’s Republican governor for his signature.

The measure would ban most abortions if a fetal heartbeat can be detected, something that can happen as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. The House already approved the measure. Gov. Jack Dalrymple generally opposes abortion but has not said whether he will sign the bill into law.

It’s one of several anti-abortion measures the state Legislature has weighed this session. The vote came with almost no debate in the Senate and after the same chamber approved another measure that would make North Dakota the first to ban abortions based on genetic defects such as Down syndrome.”

Officials in Florida are still piecing together a plot to attack an Orlando college campus.

From NBCNews

“A former student found dead in a University of Central Florida dorm room along with makeshift explosives and weapons was planning an attack on the school’s Orlando campus, the university police chief said on Monday.

The man’s body was found at about 1 a.m. at the Tower 1 residence hall, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

A fire alarm had gone off less than an hour earlier, and as campus police responded, a 911 call came in reporting a man with a gun, police said. When police went to investigate, they discovered the man’s body as well as a .45 caliber handgun, a .22 caliber tactical weapon and four homemade explosive devices. Hundreds of rounds of ammunition were also found, police said.”

Other info on the planned attack was found in the dorm room.

I have a feeling this is making several people in the Obama admin nervous, including Hillary.

From TheSmokingGun

“Armed with confidential memos to Hillary Clinton that were stolen from the e-mail account of a former White House aide, a hacker has distributed some of the documents to a wide array of congressional aides, political figures, and journalists worldwide.

In a series of weekend e-mail blasts, the hacker known as “Guccifer” disseminated four recent memos to Clinton from Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime confidant of the former Secretary of State.”

“Most of the e-mail recipients were sent four separate memos that were e-mailed to Clinton by Blumenthal during the past five months. Each memo dealt with assorted developments in Libya, including the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. One memo marked “Confidential” was sent to Clinton on September 12.”

____________________________________________________

Well, what are they waiting for? Let’s get to it.

From TheHill

“Republican lawmakers are threatening to subpoena U.S. survivors of the  terrorist attack in Benghazi.

Exasperated GOP members say unless they get more answers from the White  House, they will call on the survivors to testify before Congress, and might  hold up President Obama’s nomination to replace the U.S. ambassador who was  killed on Sept. 11, 2012 in Libya.

The recent revelation that U.S. survivors are recuperating at Walter Reed  Hospital has sparked GOP demands that the White House provide Congress with  access to them. It has also breathed new life into the controversy that was  highlighted repeatedly during the 2012 presidential campaign.”

“The miniseries’ popularity is somewhat of a mystery. For one, the drama wasn’t a hit with television critics, receiving a mediocre score of 44 on the Metacritic site.”

A mystery? Really?  🙄

And here’s an interesting read, although not really news to conservatives. It’s probably shocking to liberals though, since it refutes their pathetic “Uncle Tom” meme.

From Reason.com

“In Django Unchained, director Quentin Tarantino’s bloody ode to the spaghetti western set in the pre−Civil War American South, Samuel L. Jackson portrays the despicable character of Stephen, the head house slave on a hellish Mississippi plantation. Reviewing the film for The Boston Globe, critic Wesley Morris struggled to convey the villainy of Stephen’s character, turning to a present-day comparison for help. “The movie is too modern for what Jackson is doing to be limited to 1858,” Morris wrote. “He’s conjuring the house Negro, yes, but playing him as though he were Clarence Thomas.”

It was not the first time a liberal writer had taken a cheap shot at the conservative Supreme Court justice. New York Times reporter Linda Greenhouse once described Justice Antonin Scalia as Thomas’ “apparent mentor,” yet we now know that Thomas has been the one quietly influencing Scalia’s jurisprudence. But the comparison to the slave power system was particularly contemptible, especially because no Supreme Court justice since Thurgood Marshall has written more frequently or powerfully about American racism than Thomas.”

“Many of his critics may be too ignorant to know it, but Thomas’writings are steeped in African-American history and grapple repeatedly with the long shadow cast by slavery and Jim Crow. He may not be a modern liberal, but there is no question that Clarence Thomas is part of a civil rights tradition that started with Frederick Douglass.”
