What’s interesting out there today?

Open Thread, so what have ya’ got?

Here’s a few from me.

This one I find disturbing. There seems to be a complete lack of due process here, not to mention infringements on their rights.

From RedFlagNews

“How would you feel if you received a letter from the U.S. Government informing you that because of a physical or mental condition that the government says you have it is proposing to rule that you are incompetent to handle your own financial affairs? Suppose that letter also stated that the government is going to appoint a stranger to handle your affairs for you at your expense? That would certainly be scary enough but it gets worse.

What if that letter also stated: “A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition. If you knowingly violate any of these prohibitions, you may be fined, imprisoned, or both pursuant to the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, Pub.L.No. 103-159, as implemented at 18, United States Code 924(a)(2).”?”

“The letter provides no specifics on the reasons for the proposed finding of incompetency; just that is based on a determination by someone in the VA. In every state in the United States no one can be declared incompetent to administer their own affairs without due process of law and that usually requires a judicial hearing with evidence being offered to prove to a judge that the person is indeed incompetent. This is a requirement of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that states that no person shall “… be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law…”.”

Illinois has had it’s appeal rejected. They had sought a rehearing of the decision declaring their gun ban unconstitutional.

From TheWashingtonPost

“A federal appeals court on Friday narrowly rejected Illinois’ request to reconsider a ruling that found the state’s concealed carry weapons ban unconstitutional, leaving lawmakers in the only state that still prohibits concealed carry more certain than ever they must come up with a new law.

The 5-4 ruling by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals gave state Attorney General Lisa Madigan the option of appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court — a move that could affect gun laws in other states. It also came on the same day that state lawmakers held a hearing on the issue in Chicago — a city that’s drawn national attention for its gun violence and rising homicide rate, including last month’s death of a 15-year-old honor student a mile from President Barack Obama’s home.”

Bob Woodward has pointed out the obvious, one of the few press members to do so.

Also from TheWashingtonPost

“The White House chief of staff at the time, Jack Lew, who had been budget director during the negotiations that set up the sequester in 2011, backed up the president two days later.

There was an insistence on the part of Republicans in Congress for there to be some automatic trigger,” Lew said while campaigning in Florida. It “was very much rooted in the Republican congressional insistence that there be an automatic measure.”

The president and Lew had this wrong. My extensive reporting for my book “The Price of Politics” shows that the automatic spending cuts were initiated by the White House and were the brainchild of Lew and White House congressional relations chief Rob Nabors — probably the foremost experts on budget issues in the senior ranks of the federal government.

Obama personally approved of the plan for Lew and Nabors to propose the sequester to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). They did so at 2:30 p.m. July 27, 2011, according to interviews with two senior White House aides who were directly involved.”

Uh, Mr. President, your pants are on fire.

  1. Does anyone actually think the President is going to admit he is wrong? No! He’ll blame Lew and Nabors instead of admitting he okayed their plan.

  2. Red Flag News. Well, that is cause for concern. We are rearing our family on military retirement. Hope that sleep apnea thing does not bring a finding that he is incompetent and they will have to manage his money.

  3. Thanks Chas. All papers are struggling no matter what their editorial viewpoints may be, and journalism as a profession is definitely under threat from so many factors (including and perhaps most basically its very financial survival).

  4. While some of the factors have been self-inflicted, in my view, they’re mostly caused by the rapidly changing technology, of course.

The revenue sources that once supported thousands of thriving, family owned newspapers all over this county are gone for the most part — and so far the search for how to make newspapers a successful business model once again is eluding us.

  5. Donna, the local paper is still the best way for businesses to get their advertisements out. Elvera always waits for the grocery ads on Wednesday before going shopping.
And she might take a couple of hours on the Sunday paper.
I always give the “fun paper” to her because there is nothing I need and nothing I want.

  6. I’m really skeptical of the influence of internet advertising. I ignore most things on the screen but what I’m dealing with. And I delete most spam without reading.
